Também conhecida como a Praça Elíptica, foi construída para distribuir o tráfego entre as principais artérias da cidade como a Gran Via ou a Ercilla. Sem dúvida é uma das mais importantes praças da cidade. Ao centro tem um jardim com uma fonte que foram adicionados em 1940, a primeira praça foi construída em 1874. Á sua volta podemos ver vários edificios de relevância como o Palácio Chávarri, que é utilizado desde a década de 40 como sede do Governo Civil. Foi construído para a familia Chávarri e projectado por um arquitecto belga daí o seu estilo neo-flamenco.

O nome completo é Gran Via Don Diego López de Haro e é provavelmente a rua mais importante da cidade, também a mais movimentada. Recebe o nome do fundador da cidade que era no século XIV era uma simples aldeia piscatória, passou depois a vila e o seu porto mercantil dependia directamente do senhorio de Biscaya.
E nestes últimos anos a cidade volta a transformar-se de um passado cinzento ligado a produção industrial e ao porto, para se tornar num centro cosmopolita que podemos testemunhar ao longo da Gran Via. É um verdadeiro centro comercial ao ar livre com algumas das melhores lojas com morada ali, lojas como a Louis Vuitton, a Hugo Boss ou a Suarez.

Named after the founder of the city that was in the fourteenth century just a simple fishing village, it became a town and its commercial port depended directly from the landlord of Biscay.
And in recent years the city transformed itself from a grey past of industrial production and the port to become a cosmopolitan center that we can witness along the Gran Via. It is a true open-air shopping center with some of the best shops there, stores like Louis Vuitton, Hugo Boss or Suarez.

Caminhando pelo bairro antigo (a que chamam “casco viejo medieval”) chegamos á Praça de Santiago onde está a Catedral com o mesmo nome.
Esta colorida e pequena praça, está rodeada de edificios que ainda hoje guardam o seu estilo original apesar de terem sido restauradas. Ainda hoje podemos vê-la cheia de vida um claro sinal que no seu tempo de maior relevância era o ponto mais central da cidade.
A decorá-la está uma fonte junto á Catedral desenhada por Luís Paret.

do: PARQUE DE DOÑA CASILDA – BILBAO, ESPANHA
Este agradável parque começa na Gran Via e vai até Abandoibarra, o arquitecto Ricardo Bastida (o mesmo que criou o Alhóndiga em 1909) criou um jardim ao estilo romântico inglês e um refúgio perfeito para disfrutar de alguma paz e tranquilidade no centro da cidade.
Tem alguns divertimentos lúdicos muito vocacionados para crianças como um carrossel de estilo clássico ou o tradicional parque de baloiços.
Para os mais velhos há dois campos de basket e conta com um bom espaço de relvado onde todos podem aproveitar o bom tempo deitando-se ao sol ou simplesmente ler um livro.

La Pérgola é um local que ainda hoje a cidade aproveita para fazer pequenos espectáculos culturais. Ao centro uma fonte anima o espaço.

Na zona do parque mais para o lado de Abandoibarra está uma outra fonte, mais pequena que presta homenagem á benfeitora do jardim, Doña Casilda Iturrizar. A mulher de um dos fundadores do Banco de Bilbao, um homem de sucesso e riqueza e a quem o parque lhe dedica o nome graças ao facto de ela ter doado os terrenos para a sua construção.
In the park area to the side of Abandoibarra there is another fountain, smaller and pays homage to the patron of the garden, Doña Casilda Iturrizar. The wife of one of the founders of the Bank of Bilbao, a man of wealth and success and to whom it was dedicated the park’s name and from the fact that she had donated the land for its construction.

Quase parece uma injustiça resumir Bilbao ao Guggenheim, a sua “atracção” número um, lembro-me que falava com os meus colegas espanhóis e sempre diziam que a cidade não era bonita á excepção do museu desenhado pelo famoso Frank Gehry. A Plaza Nueva no Casco Viejo é como as típicas Plazas Mayor que se vê por Espanha, ao centro tem a sede da Euskaltzaindia (Real Academia do Idioma Basco) e as arcadas abrigam lojas, bares e restaurantes.
É sem dúvida um dos grandes centros sociais de Bilbao, construída em 1849 quando a cidade estava no seu pico. De estilo neo-clássico conta com sessenta e quatro arcos.

Calle Diputación – Bilbao, Espanha
A Calle Diputación é uma perpendicular á Gran Via (que aliás a corta a o meio), uma zona onde estão alguns dos mais recomendados e tradicionais bares de pinchos da cidade. De um dos lados da rua está uma estátua em homenagem a John Adams, o segundo presidente dos Estados Unidos da América. Nela pode ver-se escrito: Bizkaia – Carta IV. Defesa da Constituição do Governo dos EUA (1787) em que se refere a “…esta gente extraordinária conseguiu preservar o seu idioma, o seu génio, leis, governo e costumes, sem mudanças, muito mais do que qualquer outra nação da Europa”.
The Calle Diputación is perpendicular to Gran Via (it actually cuts it in half), an area where you can find some of the most recommended and traditional pinchos bars of the city. On one side of the street there’s a statue in honor of John Adams, the second president of the United States. It can be seen written, Bizkaia – Letter IV. Defense of the Constitution of the U.S. Government (1787) which refers to “… this extraordinary people managed to preserve their language, their genius, laws, customs and government, without changes, more than any other nation in Europe.”
Azkuna Zentroa (Alhondiga) – Bilbao, Espanha
No nosso passeio por Bilbao visitámos o Alhondiga, o centro cultural da cidade. Instalado num antigo armazém de vinho construído em 1909, deixou de funcionar nos anos 70 e ficou entregue ao abandono. Felizmente a cidade de Bilbao conseguiu recuperá-lo para utilização pública e para a promoção de eventos culturais.
On our stroll in Bilbao we visited the Alhondiga, the city’s cultural center. Housed in a former wine warehouse built in 1909, it stopped working in the 70s and was left abandoned. Fortunately the city of Bilbao managed to retrieve it for public use and for the promotion of cultural events.

Tinha encontrado na revista Woman (Madame Figaro) um artigo sobre o bairro de Indautxu onde recomendavam “perder-nos” na pastelaria artesanal de Martina de Zuricalday sem medo de cometer nenhum pecado…mas a gula…ai a gula!
I had found in Woman magazine (Madame Figaro) an article about the Indautxu neighborhood where they would recommend “getting lost” in the artisanal pastry of Martina de Zuricalday without being afraid of committing any sin…but the gluttony…oh the gluttony!
