Foram várias as vezes que passei pela Basílica (ficava perto da Universidade onde estudei) e foi preciso sair do país para visitá-la. Desconhecia o seu interior e a sua história mas numa dessas idas a Lisboa com mais tempo para passear não hesitámos em visitá-la e depois dar um passeio no Jardim da Estrela.
Construída e inaugurada a finais do século XVIII, foi um pedido especial da Rainha D. Maria I e é nela que repousa agora. 

A Rainha pretendia construir a Basílica e o Convento como promessa quando tivesse um filho varão, o seu desejo foi satisfeito mas apenas o seu quarto filho homem chegaria a Rei (os restantes três faleceram). O seu túmulo não é difícil de identificar e está a meio da igreja que está dedicada ao Sagrado Coração de Jesús. Com uma forma de cruz latina e um estilo entre o barroco e o neoclássico, o que mais destaca para mim é a sua cúpula e o altar-mor onde estão as pinturas de Pompeo Batoni. Dizem que foi a primeira igreja no mundo dedicada a este ritual do Sagrado Coração e a Batoni tentou retratar a sua Consagração na pintura central do altar.
Sombria porque o dia não lhe permitia ter mais luz, tem um lugar na história da cidade e é um marco do reinado de D. Maria, vale a pena visitar.
 
The Queen wanted to build the Basilica and the Convent as a promise when she had her first son, her desire was satisfied but only his fourth son come to be King (the remaining three died). Her tomb is not difficult to identify and is in the middle of the church dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. With a shape of a Latin cross and a style between Baroque and Neoclassical, what most stands out to me is its dome and the altar where you can see the paintings of Pompeo Batoni. They say it was the first church in the world dedicated to this ritual of the Sacred Heart and the Batoni tried to portray the consecration in central altar painting.
Darker because the day did not allow it to have more light, has a place in the history of the town and is a landmark of the reign of Queen Mary, is worth visiting.

Ponto de encontro. É a primeira coisa que me vem á cabeça quando penso na Praça Luís de Camões. Foi, é e seguirá sendo um dos principais pontos da vida social de Lisboa, reinventar-se mesmo quando por exemplo o Bairro Alto está em baixa, aqui é o sitio onde muitos se juntam para começar o dia mas principalmente para começar noite.
É por isso normal ver muita animação de gente por aqui, muitos sentados aos pés de Camões a conviver ou a contemplar esta parte da cidade.

Meeting point. It’s the first thing that comes to mind when I think of the Luís de Camões Square. Was, is and will remain a major point of social life in Lisbon reinventing itself even when for example the Bairro Alto is not in it’s highest, here is the place where many gather to start the day but mainly to start the night.
It is normal to see a great buzz of people here, many sitting at the feet of Camões hanging out or contemplating this part of town.

Sea Me Peixaria Moderna – Lisboa, Portugal

O Sea Me era um dos restaurantes que tinha muita curiosidade em conhecer este Verão e depois de ouvir tantos elogios sobre ele lá conseguimos experimentar. Esta peixaria serve peixe e marisco fresco com uma ementa moderna onde receitas mais tradicionais da nossa culinária se misturam como outras como por exemplo o sushi e para mim foi a combinação ideal porque é um lugar onde o posso comer enquanto alguém que não gosta pode provar outros pratos.
The Sea Me was one of the restaurants was very curious to meet this summer and after hearing so many raves about we were able to try it. This fish shop serves fresh seafood with a more modern menu where traditional recipes of our cuisine mingle as others such as sushi and for me it was the ideal combination because it is a place where I can eat it while someone who does not like it can prove taste other dishes.

Manteigaria – Lisboa, Portugal

Para os que fazem romarias até Belém para comer os pastéis têm uma excelente alternativa no Chiado: a Manteigaria – Fábrica de Pastéis de Nata. Uma ideia do chef Miguel Rocha Vieira que juntamente com Rogério Loupas recuperou da melhor forma este emblemático edificio para fabricar de forma tradicional o maior ícone da pastelaria portuguesa.

For those who make pilgrimages to Belém to eat the “pastéis” have an excellent alternative in Chiado: a Manteigaria – Pastel de Nata Factory. An idea of chef Miguel Rocha Vieira who along with Roger Loupas recovered in the best way this iconic building to produce through traditional metods the biggest icon of the Portuguese pastry.

Aproveitando as nossas férias de Verão em Lisboa fomos almoçar ao Time Out Mercado da Ribeira e que já se tornou um espaço de referência gastronómica com a ajuda da revista que lhe dá o nome que todas as semanas publica um artigo sobre as novidades que por lá podemos encontrar e provar. O verdadeiro Mercado da Ribeira continua a funcionar com as bancas da fruta e verdura e gostaria de acreditar que ter um vizinho tão famoso reanime o gosto por comprar nos mercados.
Taking advantage of our summer holidays in Lisbon we went to lunch at Time Out Mercado da Ribeira and has already become a gastronomic reference with the help of the magazine that gives it’s name that every week publishes an article on the new things one can find and taste here. The real Ribeira Market continues to work with the stalls of fruit and vegetables and I would like to believe that having such a famous neighbor will revive the taste for shopping in these more traditional markets.

As praias onde passava todo o meu Verão eram a da Poça ou a da Azarujinha, de vez em quando fazíamos essa caminhada extra para chegar ao Tamariz porque o seu areal era muito mais extenso. Hoje continua a ser uma das mais bonitas da linha com o Chalet Barros de um lado e o bonito edificio das piscinas privadas (o amarelo) do lado oposto.
The beaches where spent all my summer were the Poça or Azarujinha, occasionally we did that extra walk to get to Tamariz beach because it was much more extensive. Today it remains one of the most beautiful beaches in the Cascais area with Chalet Barros on one side and the beautiful building (yellow one) of private pools on the opposite side.

Cada dia vejo posts noutros blogs sobre novos restaurantes, cafés ou pastelarias que abrem aqui e a ali prometendo ser o novo sitio da moda e quando entrei na pastelaria Garrett no Estoril comecei a pensar um pouco sobre o meu próprio blog e se deveria escrever mais sobre os sitios da moda ou sobre os que sobrevivem ás modas e se tornam lugares obrigatórios. Abriu as suas portas em 1934 e com Estoril no seu apogeu tornou-se na pastelaria de referência para os lanches das senhoras finas da linha.
Every day I see posts in other blogs about new restaurants, cafes or bakeries that open here and there promises to be the new site of fashion and when I entered the pastry Garrett at Estoril I started thinking a bit about my own blog and if I ought to write more about fashionable new places or those that survive through time and become mandatory places. Opened its doors in 1934 and Estoril at its peak in the pastry has become a reference for the tea time of fine ladies from the area.

Uma das melhores maneiras de conhecer as praias da linha Estoril-Cascais é dar um passeio pelo seu paredão á beira-mar. São aproximadamente três quilómetros e o percurso começa (ou acaba) em São João do Estoril a partir da Praia do Conde da Azarujinha, passando por várias outras como a da Poça, Tamariz, Moitas, da Conceição e termina na Praia da Rainha.
One of the best ways to visit the beaches of Estoril-Cascais is take a walk through it walk in the seaside. There are approximately three kilometers and the journey begins (or ends) in São João do Estoril from the Conde Azarujinha beach through several others like the Poça, Tamariz, Moitas, of Conceição and ends at Rainha’s beach.

SOMOS UM REGALO – CASCAIS, PORTUGAL

Todos acham que quando venho a Portugal a primeira comida da qual quero matar saudades é o bacalhau (cozinhado das mil maneiras que somos capazes de o fazer) a verdade é que o que realmente quero comer assim que chego é um frango assado na brasa e os meus favoritos são os da Guia mais pequenos mas muito saborosos. Somos um Regalo é um restaurante que já conhecia em Sintra mas o de Cascais foi uma descoberta porque fica mais perto da nossa “casa”.
Everyone thinks that when I come to Portugal the first food of which I miss is killing cod (cooked the thousand ways we are able to do so) the truth is that what we really want to eat it so I get a roast chicken on the barbecue and my favorites are the Guia smaller but very tasty. We are a real treat is a restaurant that knew in Sintra but Cascais was a breakthrough because it is closer to our “home“.

Rua Direita – Cascais, Portugal

Agora é a Rua Frederico Arouca mas para os que aqui vivem nunca deixará de ser a Rua Direita. É fácil identificá-la, é a rua pedonal de Cascais mais movimentada. Antes de haver shoppings quando queríamos ir ás compras esta rua era o “centro comercial” que visitávamos. E no Verão, íamos em familia ao Tchipepa comer um gelado ou ao famoso Santini (que ficava numa paralela a esta rua).
Now is the Rua Frederico Arouca but for those who live here never cease to be the Rua Direita (Right Street). It is easy to identify it, is the busiest pedestrian street in Cascais. Before there were malls when we wanted to go shopping this street was the “centerpiece” we visited. And in the summer, we would go to Tchipepa to get ice cream or to the famous Santini (which was in a parallel to this street).
