Calle Ancha ou a Rua Larga é uma zona pedonal que liga a Praça de Santa Domingo com a de La Regla onde se encontra a Catedral, durante a nossa estadia em León passámos várias vezes por ela. Cruzamos a rua para ir de bairro em bairro na parte antiga da cidade, enquanto isso vamos encontrando lojas tradicionais sem ver grandes cadeias e franquicias excepto algum restaurante. A outra parte interessante da rua é a arquitectura.
Calle Ancha or Broad Street is a pedestrian zone linking the Plaza de Santa Domingo to La Regla where the Cathedral is located, during our stay in Leon we passed several times through it. We crossed the street to go from neighborhood to neighborhood in the old part of the city, meanwhile we are finding traditional stores without seeing large chains and franchises except some restaurants. The other interesting part of the street is the architecture.

MERCADO ROMANO – LEÓN, ESPANHA

Fomos surpreendidos pela Legião de soldados Romanos que invadiu as ruas de León, não sabíamos que tínhamos ido no fim de semana do Mercado que celebra o Natalicio da Águila (o nascimento da Águia o símbolo das legiões de Roma Antiga) cujo programa inclui o desfile das tropas, teatros, música pelas ruas, bancas que vendem productos artesanais e até uma zona de restaurante tudo com detalhes da época.
We were surprised by the Legion of Roman soldiers who invaded the streets of León, we knew that we had gone on the market of the weekend celebrating the Natalicio the Águila (the birth of the eagle symbol of the legions of ancient Rome) whose program includes the parade of troops, theaters, music in the streets, stalls selling handmade products and even a restaurant area with all details of the time.

Ponte Alexander III – Paris, França

São várias as pontes que ligam as duas margens de Paris separadas pelo rio Sena mas há uma que brilha mais que as outras, a Ponte de Alexandre III. Construída no século XIX e inaugurada no ano da Exposição Universal de 1900, serve de ligação entre os Campos Elisios e Les Invalides, tal como tantos outros monumentos em Paris não lhe falta esplendor e detalhes interessantes. Diria que uma das melhores horas para atravessá-la é durante o pôr do sol em que as suas esculturas douradas ganham uma cor ainda mais quente.
There are several bridges connecting the two banks of Paris separated by the river Seine but there is one that shines more than the others, the Bridge of Alexander III. Built in the 19th century and inaugurated in the year of the Universal Exposition of 1900, it serves as a link between the Champs Elysees and Les Invalides, just as many other monuments in Paris it has plenty of splendor and interesting details. I would say that one of the best times to cross it is during the sunset when its golden sculptures gain an even warmer color.

La Trastienda del 13 foi o restaurante que nos surpreendeu em León, é do tipo desta nova onda que podes encontrar em Madrid ou Lisboa com uma carta onde as receitas de toda a vida recebem um toque moderno e a decoração vintage torna-o muito acolhedor chegando em alguns detalhes a ser original. Além disso houve outro ponto positivo, fomos com crianças e tudo correu ás mil maravilhas.
 
La Trastienda del 13 was the restaurant that surprised us in León, its the type of this new wave that you can find in Madrid or Lisbon with a menú where tradicional recipes are given a modern twist and vintage decor makes it very cozy coming in some details to be original. There was another positive, we went with kids and everything went smoothly.

Tem uma esplanada com uma excelente vista para a Catedral de Santa Maria além do bar que ao sair vimos cheio até á porta confirmando o gosto pelo “tapeo” por parte dos locais. Quanto a comida a carta era variada o que nos provocou alguma indecisão, optámos por duas entradas para partilhar: um tartar de atum com guacamole e pão de pita e provavelmente os melhores e mais criativos “huevos rotos” que provei (até hoje) com batata palha e um pisto de lulas. Vieram os segundos, um arroz de camarão al ajillo e lulas que estava saboroso mas um pouco puxado a sal, um risotto trufado de cogumelos, um delicioso rigatone com carne guisada e um papilote de corvina cuja apresentação tentava ser algo de bonito mas não resultou. Com porções correctas não sobrou grande espaço para sobremesa optámos por chás e cafés principalmente quando descobrimos que era Delta. Os preços rondam os 25€-30€ por pessoa (não contámos com as crianças mas eles comeram dos nossos pratos).
 
It has a terrace with a great view of the Cathedral of Santa Maria besides the bar that we saw coming out that was filled to the door confirming the taste for “tapeo” by the locals. As for the food the menu was varied which caused some indecision, we opted for two starters to share: a tuna tartar with guacamole and pita bread and probably the best and most creative “huevos rotos” that I tasted (till today) with potato straw and squid “pisto” (a bed of vegetables with tomato sauce). Then came the second dishes, an al ajillo shrimp and squid rice which was tasty but a little to salty for me, a truffled mushroom risotto, a delicious rigatone with beef stew and papilote of corvina whose presentation was trying to be something beautiful but failed. With correct portions it did not leave much room for dessert we opted for coffees and teas especially when we found out it was Delta. Prices are around 25 € -30 € per person (not counting children but they ate of our dishes).

Ao lado da Catedral e com uma fachada mais discreta está o Claustro para o qual tivémos que pagar uma entrada á parte. Fiz questão de visitá-lo, creio que aos poucos se tornam a parte que mais gosto das Catedrais e normalmente gosto dos que têm um pequeno jardim que faltou a este mas é extraordinário o trabalho decorativo nos corredores á sua volta para além das estátuas que em teoria decoravam a fachada e que agora fazem parte do Museu.
 
Next to the cathedral and with a more discreet façade is the Cloister for which we had to pay an entrance fee to get in. I made sure to visit it, I believe that gradually it is becoming the part I like most while visiting Cathedrals and usually like those that have a small garden that this one lacked but it has an extraordinary decorative work in the corridors around it besides the statues that in theory decorated the facade and which are now part of the Museum.

Foi construido mais tarde entre os séculos XIII e XIV, segue a mesma linha gótica e podemos contemplar as pinturas de Nicolas Francés do século XV, não estão no seu melhor estado mas ainda se consegue ver algumas. Por aqui podemos ver também o Museu da Catedral com várias obras numa estranha dinâmica em que te abrem a porta, fecham-te e voltam a abrir quando terminas. Esta parte devo admitir que vimos a correr porque íamos com crianças e pouco aguentaram mas são pequenas salas com peças muito interessantes ligadas á Catedral de Santa Maria.  
 
Later was built between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, follows the same line of the Gothic and we can contemplate the Nicolas Francés paintings of the fifteenth century, it is not at its best shape but still we can see some. Here we can also see the Cathedral’s Museum with several works in a strange dynamic in which they open the door for, shut it and open it back when you finish. This part I must admit that we saw running because we were with kids and they endured so little but it has small rooms with very interesting pieces connected to the Catedral de Santa Maria.

Aproveitámos um intervalo no calor que fazia em Espanha para marcar um fim de semana em León, capital da provincia e da comunidade autónoma de Castela e Leão é uma das cidades que tinha curiosidade por conhecer por dois monumentos que se destacam: a Catedral e a casa de los Botines criada por Gaudí.  Visitámos a primeira e confirmámos que é uma das mais bonitas que já vimos em Espanha.
We took a break from the hot weather in Spain to book a weekend in Leon, capital of the province and the autonomous community of Castile and Leon, is one of the cities that was curious to know  because of two monuments that stand out: the Cathedral and the House de los Botines created by Gaudí. We visited the first and confirmed that it is one of the nicest we’ve ever seen in Spain.

Instalados nas Termas de Monfortinho decidimos aproveitar o fresquinho da manhã para dar um passeio com os miúdos em Penha Garcia, uma pequena aldeia que tínhamos visto quando fomos jantar a Monsanto. Que saudades tinha de este tipo de passeios que fazíamos quando vivíamos em Portugal, passar por estas aldeias onde o tempo não as faz mudar, com essas casinhas de pedra e portas de madeira coloridas entregues ao abandono. Faz ter pena mas tem o seu encanto.
 
Installed in Monfortinho we decided to enjoy the fresh air of the morning to take a walk with the kids in Penha Garcia, a small village we had seen when we were dining Monsanto. I missed this kind of tours we did when we lived in Portugal, go through these villages where time does not make them change with these stone houses and colorful wooden abandoned doors . Makes you feel sorry but has its charm.

Dizem que o Castelo pode ser da época de D. Sancho I e pela sua proximidade com a fronteira espanhola podemos entender a sua importância. Dele temos uma fantástica vista sobre a região, creio que conseguimos ver Monsanto e a barragem, tudo isto numa zona rochosa que faz parte da rota dos fósseis que pertence ao Geoparque da Naturtejo. Para chegar ao topo de Penha Garcia deixamo-nos perder pelas suas ruas com encanto que me lembram os Verões de visita a aldeia do meu pai, passamos pela igreja matriz, pelo forno comunitário e pela lojinha de artesanato onde compramos algo para ajudar a micro-economia da aldeia.
 
They say that the castle may be from the time of D. Sancho I and from its proximity to the Spanish border we can understand its importance. Has a fantastic view of the region, I believe we can see Monsanto and the dam, all in a rocky area which is part of the route of fossils belonging to the Geopark Geopark. To reach the top of Penha Garcia we let ourselves get lost in the streets with charm that remind me of the summers visiting my father’s village, passed the parish church, the community oven and the handicraft shop where we bought something to help micro- the village economy.

Precisava de um fim de semana de descanso e quando uma (GRANDE) amiga sugeriu este hotel não hesitámos em reservar para o último fim de semana de Maio. Prometia muito verde, tranquilidade, banhos de sol, boa comida e claro está, termas…dever cumprido. O hotel foi construído na década de 40 e renovado em 2005, tem quartos amplos, uma boa piscina e um bom jardim que se agradece para quem tem crianças. Foi o fim de semana perfeito.
 
I needed a week to rest and when a (BIG) friend suggested this hotel we did not hesitate in booking for the last weekend of May. Promised greenery, tranquility, sun, good food and of course, spa … mission accomplished. The hotel was built in the 40s and renovated in 2005, it has large rooms, a good pool and a nice garden that welcomes for those with children. It was the perfect weekend.

O nosso quarto era familia, tinha um quarto de casal grande, duas salas e numa delas estava instalada uma cama. Tínhamos também varanda que dava para o estacionamento (infelizmente não conseguimos vista para a piscina) ainda assim era bastante tranquilo. Fomos com meia-pensão, o pequeno-almoço era regular e durante as refeições (jantar ou almoço) comemos sempre muito bem, funcionava como buffet e tinha boa variedade incluindo vários pratos quase sempre havia um de bacalhau. Mas a grande descoberta gastronómica surgiu deitada numa cadeira com vista para a piscina: uma tosta mista acompanhada com caipirinha. A tosta mista feita como Deus manda com pão alentejano e um queijo saboroso, serviram de lanche para a toda a familia.
Fica perto das termas e tem um acesso que podemos ir pé, a massagem recomendada é a Vichy de quinze minutos de onde saímos renovadas. Gostei muito da decoração do hotel, do serviço e da localização, melhor fim de semana não podíamos ter.
 
We had a family room, I had a large double room, two rooms and one of them was installed a bed. We also had a balcony that overlooked the parking lot (unfortunately we could not overlook the pool) but it was still fairly quiet. We went with one meal included, breakfast was regular and during meals (lunch or dinner) always eat very well, I served as buffet and had good variety including several dishes almost always had a cod. But the vast gastronomic discovery came while lying in a chair with a pool view: one toasted sandwich accompanied with caipirinha. The toasted sandwich made as God commands with bread “alentejano” and a tasty cheese, served as a snack for the whole family.
Is near the thermal baths and has an access that we can go walking, the recommended massage is the Vichy fifteen minutes from where we left renewed. I enjoyed the hotel’s decor, service and location, best weekend we could not have.

PORTA DE L’AVANCÉE – MONT ST-MICHEL, FRANÇA

No século XV começou a construção da muralha que vemos hoje á volta do Monte e pela qual podemos dar um agradável passeio para conhecer melhor a ilha. A única entrada é a da Porta de L’Avancée que dá para uma outra porta conhecida como a do Rei que oferece uma segunda proteção.
No pátio antes de entrar podemos encontrar o posto de Turismo onde nos deram o mapa e foi só entrar no lugar onde o tempo parece ter parado.
 
In the fifteenth century began the construction of the wall we see today built around the Mount and by which we can take a nice walk to get to know the island. The only entrance is the de L’avancée door that leads to another door known as the King offering a second layer of protection.
In the courtyard before entering we find the Tourism office where they gave us the map and then it was just getting in the place where time seems to stand still.

IGREJA S. PIERRE E CEMITÉRIO – MONT ST-MICHEL, FRANÇA

A Igreja de S. Pierre está a meio caminho da Abadia e é fácil de encontrar graças á sua torre-relógio, confesso que o nome baralhou as minhas ideias porque á porta está uma estátua da Joana D’Arc e lá dentro destaca a estátua em prata do Arcanjo Miguel a quem está dedicada a Abadia, bom e a bem da verdade, todo o Monte. Havia poucos sinais de S. Pedro mas a verdade é que mesmo pequena a Igreja estava recheada de elementos interessantes.
 
The Church of St. Pierre is halfway to the Abbey and is easy to find thanks to its clock tower, I confess that the name shuffled my ideas because in the door is a statue of Joan of Arc and there stands the statue in silver Archangel Michael to whom the abbey is dedicated, and oh well to tell the truth, the whole Mount. There were few signs of St. Peter but the truth is that even small the church was full of interesting elements.

 
 
Originalmente construída no século XI, foi renovada nos séculos XV e XVI e da mesma altura são algunas esculturas como a da Virgem que está se destaca num pequeno altar. É outra das paragens obrigatórias dos peregrinos que prestam homenagem e descansam para ganhar fôlego para o que ainda falta para chegar até á Abadia. Ao lado está o cemitério, a última casa dos que ali vivem e onde podemos encontrar a campa da famosa Mère (Annette) Poulard (famosa pelas suas omoletes).
 
Originally built in the eleventh century, it was renovated in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and from the same time are the sculptures like the one from the Virgin that stands out in it’s a small altar. It’s another mandatory stop for the pilgrims on thei way to pay homage and rest for breath for what remains to get to the Abbey. Next door is the cemetery, the last home of those who live there and where we can find the grave of the famous Mère (Annette) Poulard (famous for its omoletes).
