Foi uma das cidades que fazia parte da nossa road trip pelo Norte de Espanha e por França (link Road Trip Espanha & França) e parámos para dormir antes de seguir caminho até Santander. É a capital do País Basco Francês e fica entre dois rios, o Nive e o Andour. Percorremos as ruas do centro tranquilamente fotografando as suas coloridas portadas, vimos a sua Catedral e passeámos nas margens do rio. Pode-se ver num dia e valeu a pena a paragem.

It was one of the cities that was part of our road trip through Northern Spain and France (link Road Trip Spain & France) and we stopped to sleep before heading to Santander. It is the capital of the French Basque Country and lies between two rivers, the Nive and the Andour. We walked the streets of the center quietly photographing its colorful shutters, saw its Cathedral and strolled along the banks of the river. You can see it in one day and it was worth the stop.

Place du Capitole – Toulouse, França

A Praça do Capitólio foi o centro das nossas visitas em Toulouse, como escolhemos um hotel fora este era o nosso ponto de encontro com a cidade. Tal como o é para muitos dos que aqui vivem, é quase impossível tirar uma foto durante o dia sem ter gente a passar, há sempre um mercado ou feira montada em algum dia. O edificio mais relevante é o que lhe dá o nome, o do Capitólio a sua câmara municipal e é ele que marca a arquitetura da praça mas há muito mais para ver.

Capitol square was the center of our visits in Toulouse, as we chose a hotel outside this was our meeting point with the city. As it is for many of those who live here, it is almost impossible to take a picture during the day without people passing by, there is always a market or fair set up sometime. The most relevant building is what gives it its name, the Capitol building is its town hall and it is what marks the architecture of the square but there is so much to see.

Palácio de Fontainebleau – França

A caminho de Paris para levar as crianças á Disneyland decidimos parar noutro tipo de terra de sonhos, Fontainebleau. É o primeiro da sua dimensão que visitei em França, estive nos jardins de Versailles mas as suas grandes filas fizeram-nos desistir de ver o seu interior, tivémos em Chambord e Chenonceau que não se comparam, vários séculos de história de reis e imperadores que fomos conhecendo andando pelos seus jardins e corredores.

On our way to Paris to take the children to Disneyland we decided to stop at another type of dreamland, Fontainebleau. It is the first of its size that I visited in France, I was in the gardens of Versailles but its large queues made us give up seeing its interior, we had in Chambord and Chenonceau that do not compare, several centuries of history of kings and emperors that we got to know walking through its gardens and corridors.

Na nossa primeira road trip a França, Avignon era uma das cidades que sabia que tínhamos que visitar, estava muito interessada em conhecer esse grandioso edificio, o Palácio Papal. Não ficámos na cidade muito tempo, o suficiente para ver os seus principais monumentos e para isso contámos com a ajuda do seu comboio turístico que parte da Place du Palais, depois visitámos o Palácio e terminámos passeando pelas suas ruas até voltar para o nosso carro.

On our first road trip to France, Avignon was one of the towns we knew we had to visit, I was very much interested in seeing that grand building, the Papal Palace. We did not stay in the city long but enough to see its main monuments and we counted on the help of its tourist train from the Place du Palais, then visited the Palace and ended up strolling its streets until we got back to our car.

Rue Saint Pierre – Caen, França

O apartamento que alugámos em Caen ficava a poucos passos da Rue de Saint Pierre, a única que percorremos por completo na cidade, onde tomámos o pequeno-almoço e provámos algumas das delicias que nos chamavam a atenção desde as montras das várias “boulangeries” que encontrámos nesta rua, uma delas tem o prémio da melhor baguete. Pode dizer-se que fica no coração da cidade e começa (ou termina) na praça o mesmo nome.

The apartment we rented in Caen was just a few steps away from the Rue de Saint Pierre, the only one we went through completely in the city, where we had breakfast and tasted some of the delicacies that attracted our attention from the windows of the various boulangeries We found on this street, one of them has the best baguette prize. It can be said that it is in the heart of the city and begins (or ends) in the square the same name.

Durante a nossa estadia na zona da Normandia e Bretanha, demos um saltinho a Saint-Malo que nos tinha sido recomendada. A cidade fortificada ficou famosa pelos seus corsários que atacavam navios inimigos e ficavam com as suas riquezas, alguma faltaram fizeram durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial para protegê-la da invasão alemã e da consequente destruição a que foi submetida por parte dos Aliados para conseguir libertá-la. Quando viajas a Cabourg também viajas no tempo até á Belle Epoque e onde os mais privilegiados passavam o seu Verão entre o luxo dos hotéis, as noites de Casino e claro está passeando o seu glamour pela costa das flores onde se encontra esta pequena cidade balnear. Nós fomos só um dia, suficiente para conhecer a sua essência e não estava um tempo muito favorável para banhos (pelo menos para nós). A melhor memória ficou registada na foto de uma das suas imagens de marca, os toldos de praia.

When you travel to Cabourg you also travel in time to the Belle Epoque and where the most privileged spent their summer between luxury hotels, nights in the casino and strolling their glamor along the coast of flowers where this small seaside town is located. We were only here for one day, enough to see its essence and was not a very favorable time for bathing (at least for us). Alugar uma casa no Airbnb tem várias vantagens mas há uma que talvez tenha que ver com a sorte, no nosso caso quando fomos a Caen ficámos num bonito apartamento no centro da cidade e com uma carta dos proprietários (escrita em francês é certo) que recomendava alguns sitios para comer além de dar algumas indicações úteis como localização de farmácias, supermercados, etc.. Mas a melhor de todas foi mesmo a da Boulangerie du Théâtre onde recomendavam comprar os bolos para o pequeno-almoço e foi uma autêntica descoberta.

Renting a house in Airbnb has several advantages but there is one that may have to do with luck, in our case when we went to Caen we were in a beautiful apartment in the city center and a nice letter from the owner (written in French its true) which recommended some places to eat besides giving some useful information such as location of pharmacies, supermarkets, etc .. But the best of all was the Boulangerie du Théâtre in which they recommended buying cakes for breakfast and it was a real Discovery.

Igreja Saint-Pierre – Caen, França

A melhor vista para a Igreja de Saint-Pierre é desde o Castelo de Caen, só do alto das suas muralhas conseguimos ter uma foto completa já que a sua torre tem cerca de setenta e cinco metros de altura. De estilo gótico, a primeira construção data do século XIII mas foi sofrendo alterações até ao século XVI. Também ela sobreviveu á II Guerra Mundial, o que teve que ser reconstruído foi exatamente essa torre que estava de pé desde o século XIV.

The best views of the Church of Saint-Pierre is from the Castle of Caen, only from the top of its walls we can have a complete picture as its tower has about seventy-five meters high. Has a Gothic style, the first construction is from the thirteenth century but has undergone changes until the sixteenth century.It also survived World War II and what had to be rebuilt was exactly the tower that stood there since the fourteenth century.

Castelo Ducal – Caen, França

Entrei no Castelo de Caen á espera de ver o normal: muralhas, uma torre de menagem, ruínas, algum canhão e com sorte um pequeno museu ou salas preservadas, não defraudou mas aqui encontras muito mais que isso, no seu interior estão dois museus importantes o de Belas Artes e o da Normandia. Um sobrevivente da Guerra dos Cem Anos e da Segunda Guerra Mundial mas não sem mazelas que foram sendo recuperadas ao longo de estes anos.

I entered the Château de Caen waiting to see the usual: walls, a tower, ruins, some cannons and hopefully a small museum or preserved rooms, not defrauded but you will find that here there is huch more than that, inside are two important museums the Fine Arts and the Normandy. A survivor of the War of the Hundred Years and the Second World War but not without blemishes that have been recovered over the years.
