O hotel Le Meridien não seria a minha primeira escolha em Viena por apenas uma questão: o preço. A sua localização, o bom gosto e conforto dos quartos, o serviço valem mesmo a pena mas o melhor preço que vi rondava os 150€ por noite. Fui a trabalho e aproveitámos muito este hotel com o pequeno-almoço, refeições etc.. mas o melhor mesmo era sair á rua e estar mesmo ao lado do centro, a poucos minutos da Ópera e da Praça de Maria Teresa.


The hotel Le Meridien would not be my first choice in Vienna for just one reason: the price. Its location, the good taste and comfort of the rooms, the service are really worth it but the best price we‘ve seen was around € 150 per night. I went to work and took advantage of this hotel with breakfast, meals etc .. but the best thing was to get out to the street and be right next to the center, just minutes away from the Opera House and the Maria Theresa Square.

O meu quarto era pequeno mas confortável, suficiente para as duas noites que fiquei. Com uma decoração equilibrada e moderna, era também bastante funcional com uma zona de escritório que foi bastante útil. O que me surpreendeu foi mesmo a banheira cor-de-rosa na casa de banho, uma pena não ter tido tempo para aproveitá-la porque os poucos momentos livres utilizei para conhecer Viena. Têm quartos maiores mas serão obviamente mais caros. Conta ainda com um ginásio e um SPA fabuloso que só pude espreitar. As refeições foram sempre em buffet com pratos típicos de Viena e uma especial nota para o pequeno-almoço que tinha bastante variedade onde gostei muito do pão principalmente os pretzel.
My room was small but comfortable enough for the two nights I stayed. With a balanced, modern decor it was also quite functional with an office area that was quite helpful. What surprised me was the pink bath in the bathroom, a pity I did not have time to enjoy it because the few free moments I had I used to discover Vienna. They have larger rooms but are obviously more expensive. There is also a gym and a fabulous SPA which I could only peek. The meals were always buffet with typical dishes of Vienna and a special note for the breakfast that had enough variety where I liked the bread especially the pretzel.

Foi o primeiro mercado de Natal que visitei em Viena, pareceu-me mais pequeno que o da Rathausplatz mas tinha o mesmo tipo de casetas de madeira que vendem decorações de todo o tipo, grande parte artesanato além dos tradicionais bares com o Glühwein, sandes com enchidos da região, kartoffel (batatas), entre outras propostas gastronómicas. Mas então qual é a diferença? Porque é que quem vê um vê que é igual ao outro?

It was the first Christmas market that I visited in Vienna, it seemed smaller than the Rathausplatz but had the same type of wooden houses selling decorations of all kinds, much of crafts in addition to the traditional bars with Glühwein, sandwiches with stuffed region, Kartoffel (potatoes), among other gastronomic proposals. But then what is the difference? Why one sees a market sees another?

A resposta está no seu entorno a Praça dedicada a Maria Teresa dá-lhe outro encanto, rodeada de elegantes edificios que são hoje museus e o monumento dedicado a esta imperatriz do século XVIII fazem com que seja algo realmente especial.
Neste mercado comprei algumas decorações para a árvore de Natal, é impossível resistir principalmente ás bolas pintadas á mão ou outros feitos de materiais reciclados. É igualmente impossível resistir ao cheiro do mercado, sempre algo te cheira bem ou são umas velas, ou decorações com frutos secos perfumados ou mesmo o cheiro da comida que convida ao petisco.
É imprescindivel visitar durante a noite porque a iluminação vale a pena.

The answer lies in your surroundings Square dedicated to Maria Teresa gives you another charm, surrounded by elegant buildings which are now museums and monuments dedicated to this empress of the eighteenth century make it something really special.
This market bought some decorations for the Christmas tree, it is impossible to resist mainly ace balls painted by hand or other made from recycled materials. It is also impossible to resist the smell of the market, always something smells good or are you some candles or decorations with fragrant dried fruit or even the smell of food that invites to snack.
It is indispensable visit at night because the lighting is worth it.

CAFÉ HOFBURG – VIENA, ÁUSTRIA

Depois de visitar as várias salas de Imperadores e Imperatrizes do Hofburg era tempo para uma pausa e entre salas deixam-te entrar no seu café mas preferimos chegar até ao final da exposição, voltar á praça e entrar pela porta principal do Café Hofburg. Pareceu-nos ser dos mesmos do Café Residenz e do Museum pela carta que tinham, o seu interior era diferente mas seguia a mesma linha de conforto do último que mencionei. Conseguimos um sofá acolhedor junto a uma janela e o primeiro que pedimos foi um chá.
After visiting the various rooms of emperors and empresses of the Hofburg it was time for a break and between those rooms they let you come to their coffee but we chose to reach the end of the museum, exit to the square and enter by the front door of the Café Hofburg. It seemed to us to be the same Cafe Residenz and Museum because of its menu, its interior was different but followed the same line of comfort of the last one mentioned. We got a cozy sofa near a window and the first thing we ordered was a tea.

Por momentos arrependemo-nos da nossa decisão na terra do café com dois andares de natas não terá sido a melhor ideia, mas queríamos algo mais leve porque depois íamos pedir almoço. Optámos por um clássico de Viena o famoso Schnitzel, o bife panado que pedimos para dividir e foi suficiente para duas pessoas (não tínhamos muita fome). Estava com um panado bastante crocante e o que mais gostei foi do seu acompanhamento, a famosa salada de batata fria que realmente dá mais equilibrio ao prato.
Os doces são de Landtmann o que significa que são todos bons mas como tínhamos ficado bem optámos por não pedir. Aqui servem o doce favorito do Imperador Franz Joseph, o Kaiserschmarrn é um prato de panquecas cortadas em troços com passas que se pode regar com chocolate ou geleia.
O outro ponto forte do Café Hofburg é a sua esplanada que alguns corajosos decidiram aproveitar embrulhados em mantas.

For a momento we had some regret about our decision in the land of coffee with two floors of cream it was not the best idea, but we wanted something lighter because after we would order lunch. We opted for the classic and famous Vienna‘s schnitzel, breaded steak that we asked to split and was enough for two people (we were not very hungry). It was a very crispy breaded and what I liked most was its side, the famous cold potato salad that gives more balance to the dish.
The sweets are from Landtmann which means they are all good but as we were full we opted not to order. Here they serve the favorite candy of Emperor Franz Joseph, the Kaiserschmarrn is a plate of pancakes cut into sections with raisins that you can sprinkle with chocolate or jelly.

The other strong point of the Café Hofburg is its terrace that some brave ones decided to take advantage wrapped in blankets.

Pastelaria Manolo – Madrid, Espanha

A descoberta desta pastelaria não é de todo minha mas dos nossos sobrinhos que na sua busca das melhores coisas que tens que comer em Madrid levaram-nos a conhecer os Manolitos, a especialidade da casa. Que o nome espanhol não engane ninguém, são na realidade pequenos croissants como os que comemos em Portugal e que tanto êxito fazem pela sua massa mais tenra.

The discovery of this pastry is not at all mine but of our nephews who in their quest for the best things you have to eat in Madrid led us to know the Manolitos, the house specialty. Don’t let the Spanish name fool you, they are actually small croissants as we eat in Portugal and that are very successful thanks to their tender dough.

Á terceira foi de vez. Levei a máquina fotográfica para fazer reportagem sobre La Casa del Abuelo, um clássico a funcionar em Madrid desde 1906. Um dos lugares mais tradicionais no que diz respeito a bares de tapas com algumas histórias curiosas alguma sobre um dos seus pratos mais famosos: gambas al ajillo, que foram o fruto de um racionamento depois da Guerra Civil Espanhola que com a escassez de alguns alimentos introduziu outros como as gambas.
The third time was for good. I took the camera to report on La Casa del Abuelo, a classic working in Madrid since 1906. One of the most traditional places when it comes to tapas bars with some curious stories about some of its most famous dishes: gambas al ajillo, which were the result of a rationing after the Spanish Civil War that shortages of some foods introduced others like the prawns.

Tinha muita curiosidade para experimentar os hamburguers do Goiko Grill escolhidos por muitos como os melhores da cidade de Madrid. Fomos á uma da tarde do Feriado de Almudena ao que está na rua Maria de Molina e para nossa surpresa vimos que todas as mesas estavam reservadas ainda assim conseguiram uma para duas pessoas e conseguimos comprovar que os seus hamburguers são realmente bons.

I was very curious to try the burgers of the Goiko Grill chosen by many as the best of Madrid. We went there at one o’clock the Almudena holiday to the one standing on the street Maria de Molina and to our surprise we saw that all the tables were reserved but we still managed one for two people and we could check that their burgers are really good.

Eu decidi pedir uma combinação arriscada, a Elvis. Dizem que foi inspirada na sandes favorita da estrela de rock, digamos que não era a opção mais saudável já que Elvis adorava comer banana, bacon estaladiço e manteiga de amendoim. Uma estranha mistura que de alguma forma funciona e foi uma excelente experiência culinária. Tens que escolher a carne e o tamanho por gramagem, é ainda possível fazer que leve dois hambuguers tipo Big Mac, uma autêntica torre e sem dúvida um desafio para comer. A outra foi a Pigma uma versão mais clássica com queijo, ovo estrelado e bacon. Aprovada por quem a experimentou e voltámos ao velho debate sobre qual tem o melhor hambuguer da cidade, será este ou o Alfredo’s Barbacoa. O Goiko Grill talvez perde no preço, o meu custou 12,5€ e o outro 10,50, um valor pesado se pensamos o que são, mas estavam óptimos, têm um bom tamanho e deixaram-nos sem fome para sobremesa. O serviço foi bom sem grandes comentários e vai entrar sem dúvida na nossa lista de favoritos.

I decided to ask a risky combination, Elvis. They say it was inspired by the favorite sandwiches of the rock star, I would say that was not the healthiest option since Elvis loved eating bananas, crispy bacon and peanut butter together. A strange mix that somehow works and was an excellentfood experience. You have to choose the meat and the size by weight, it is still possible to have two hambuguers type Big Mac, a real tower and certainly a challenge to eat. The other was the Pigma a more classic version with cheese, fried egg and bacon. Approved by who experienced it and we went back to the old debate about which is the best hambuguer of the city, will be this or Alfredo’s Barbacoa. The Goiko Grill may lose in the price, mine was € 12.5 and the other 10.50, a heavy value if we think what it is, but they were great, they have a good size and have left us quite full for dessert. The service was good without great reviews and will certainly go on our list of favorites.

IGREJA DE SAN MANUEL E SAN BENITO – MADRID, ESPANHA

Quando penso na Igreja de San Manuel e San Benito penso na expressão “hidden gem” (tesouro escondido) tão utilizada em viagens, eu demorei cinco anos para conhecer e ser surpreendida por esta pequena paróquia no bairro de Salamanca muito perto do retiro. É a única com estilo neobizantino em toda a Espanha, foi construída no principio do século XX e se o seu exterior já se destaca o seu interior é extraordinário.
When I think of the Church of San Manuel and San Benito I think of the expression “hidden gem” (hidden treasure) as so many times used in travel, it took me five years to know and be surprised by this small parish in the Salamanca neighborhood very close to the Retiro. It is the only one with neo-Byzantine style throughout Spain, it was built at the beginning of the twentieth century and its exterior already stands out but its interior is extraordinary.e ser

Não é muito grande e a estrela principal é a sua cúpula com uma estrutura de pendículo que se destaca em outras igrejas do bizantino como a Hagia Sophia em Istambul. No altar estão três esculturas em mármore, Jesus Cristo ao centro e nas laterais São Manuel e São Benito. Igualmente interessante é a história da Igreja, construída para ser panteão da familia de Manuel Caviggioli e de Benita Maurici o que ajuda a entender porquê está dedicada aos santos Manuel e Benito. No seu interior reina a paz e o silêncio, podes contemplar o fantástico trabalho de azulejo bizantino tranquilamente.
It’s not very big and the main star is its dome with a Pendentive structure that stands out in other churches of the Byzantine such as the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. On the altar there are three sculptures in marble, Jesus Christ in the center and San Manuel and San Benito by his side. Equally interesting is the history of the Church, built to be the pantheon of the family of Manuel Caviggioli and Benita Maurici which helps to understand why is dedicated to the saints Manuel and Benito. I it’s interior peace and silence reign, you can admire the fantastic work of Byzantine tile quietly.

FACE THE FORCE EXPO – MADRID, ESPANHA

Está a decorrer até ao dia 30 de Novembro uma exposição ao ar livre do Star Wars: Face the Force. O filme estreia na cidade no dia 18 de Dezembro e até lá são várias as ações de divulgação, esta é uma delas mas há outras, como por exemplo, Storm Troopers a tirar fotografias á porta das lojas Disney. A exposição está formada por oito capacetes alusivos á série cujas localizações se podem ver neste mapa: http://www.starwars.es/face-the-force.
Is taking place until 30th November an outdoor exhibition of Star Wars: Face the Force. The film opens in the city on December 18 and there are a number of marketing activities, this is one of them but there are others, such as Storm Troopers taking pictures outside Disney stores. The exhibition is made by eight depicting helmets from the series whose locations can be seen on this map: http://www.starwars.es/face-the-force.

Durante o passeio pela cidade consegui ver quatro deles, o Captain Phasma que está no Jardín de los Descubrimientos perto da Plaza del Colón, o outro era um Storm Trooper da First Order que está á entrada do Parque del Retiro com a Puerta del Alcalá como pano de fundo. Junto á Gran Via, na Plaza de España está um piloto da Resistência e consegui ver o tão esperado Darth Vader que está na Glorieta de Bilbao que na minha opinião não é a melhor localização para ele porque se junta muita gente num espaço tão pequeno (eu diria que é o que está na zona mais pequena). Espero encontrar os quatro que faltam que estão junto ao Reina Sofia, ao Parque Madrid Rio, á Glorieta de Santa María de la Cabeza e o Estádio Santiago Bernabéu.

During the city tour I got to see four of them, Captain Phasma which is the Jardín de los Descubrimientos near the Plaza del Colon, the other was a Storm Trooper of the First Order which is at the entrance of the Parque del Retiro with the Puerta del Alcala in the background. Near the Gran Via, in Plaza de España there is a pilot of the Resistance and I got to see the highly anticipated Darth Vader that is in Glorieta de Bilbao which in my opinion is not the best location for it because it concentrates too many people in such a small space (I would say it’s what’s in the smallest area). I hope to find the four missing which is by the Reina Sofia, the Park Madrid Rio, Glorieta de Santa María de la Cabeza and the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

Nesta praça estão três edificios considerados Património Mundial por parte da UNESCO: a Catedral, o Alcázar e o Arquivo General de Indias que convivem numa estranha harmonia arquitetónica já que não têm muito em comum, a Catedral foi construída entre os séculos XV e XVI com um estilo gótico, a Casa de la Lonja onde está o Arquivo foi construída no final do século XVI e o Alcázar teve várias fases de construção que lhe deu características do gótico e do estilo mudéjar.

In this square are three buildings considered World Heritage by UNESCO: the Cathedral, the Alcazar and the Indias General Archive who live in a strange architectural harmony as they do not have much in common, the Cathedral was built between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries with a gothic style, Casa de la Lonja where the Archive is was built in the late sixteenth century and the Alcázar had several phases of construction that gave it characteristics of gothic and Mudejar style.

Esta praça é a porta de entrada ao Bairro da Santa Cruz e tem uma das melhores vistas para a Giralda que é sem dúvida o edificio mais marcante mas não é o único. Aqui encontramos o Palácio Arzobispal e no lado oposto o Convento de la Encarnación. Históricamente era conhecido como o Corral de los Olmos pelos encontros políticos que aqui se davam para discutir vários temas da cidade. Hoje é um ponto de encontro para os que querem começar a sua visita pela cidade.

This square is the gateway to the Santa Cruz district and has one of the best views of the Giralda which is arguably the most striking building but not the only one. Here we find the Archbishop’s Palace and on the side opposite the Convent of la Encarnación. Historically was known as the Corral de los Olmos because of the political meetings held here they got on to discuss various topics of the city. Today is a meeting point for those who want to start their tour of the city. 

Além disso é possível aproveitar a praça sentados na esplanada do número 2, o restaurante  Giraldillo. Ao centro está a Fonte criada em 1925 para Exposição Mundial, um monumental candeeiro desenhado por José Diaz. O Palácio Arzobispal é utilizado desde do século XIII mas no século XVI é remodelado ganhando o estilo barroco que podemos contemplar hoje. O Convento foi fundado em 1591 pela ordem Agustina e foi construído no lugar onde antes estava o Hospital de Santa Marta. Muita história e arquitetura numa pequena praça á qual vale a pena dedicar tempo.

Also you can enjoy the square sitting on the terrace of No. 2, the Giraldillo restaurant. At the center is the Fountain created in 1925 for the World Expo, a monumental lamp designed by Jose Diaz. The Archbishop’s Palace has been used since the thirteenth century but in the sixteenth century is remodeled winning the Baroque style that we can contemplate today. The convent was founded in 1591 by the Augustinian order and was built on the site where once stood the Hospital of Santa Marta. Lots of history and architecture in a small square will which is worth devoting time.
