Esta elegante passagem liga duas ruas do centro de Viena: a Freyung e a Herrengasse, dizem que entrou em decadência e que os lojistas fugiram de aqui mas depois de ter sido reabilitado é agora um lugar com um toque mágico. Entrámos pelo o lado do Palácio de Ferstel o mesmo nome do arquiteto que o criou no século XIX e que foi o autor da Votivkirche, uma igreja criada depois do atentado ao Imperador Francisco José I.

This elegant passage connects two Vienna downtown streets: the Freyung and Herrengasse, they say it fell into decay and shopkeepers fled from here but after being rehabilitated is now a place with a magical touch. We entered by the side of the Ferstel Palace the name of the architect who created it in the nineteenth century and was the author of the Votivkirche, a church established after the attempt to Emperor Franz Joseph I.

Tanto no exterior como o interior fazem lembrar um palácio italiano, no pátio encontramos uma fonte coroada com uma estátua de Donaunixen-brunnen ou uma ninfa do rio Danúbio, aqui podemos ver á direita uma entrada para o Palácio e do lado esquerdo está a famosa passagem onde podemos tomar um café numa esplanada sem temer o frio ou mau tempo. Outro café que podemos visitar é o Café Central que fica fora da passagem mas é um dos mais famosos da cidade com mais de cento e trinta anos e que no século XIX foi um dos cafés escolhidos (para além do Griendsteidl) para a Jung Wien, um grupo de jovens escritores que se reunia aqui. O seu interior é extraordinário e vale a pena visitar porque segue a mesma linha decorativa que Ferstel aplicou em todo o edificio. Mesmo á saída uma loja captou a nossa atenção, a Xocolat e dá para perceber porquê – é o paraíso do chocolate feito em Viena.

Both outside and inside remind an Italian palace, in the courtyard we find a fountain crowned with a Donaunixen–Brunnen statue or a nymph of the river Danube, here we can see on the right the entrance to the Palace and the left side is the famous passage where we can have a coffee on a terrace without fearing the cold or bad weather. Another coffee that we can visit is the Central Café which is just outside of the passage but is one of the most famous of the city over hundred and thirty years and that in the nineteenth century was one of the chosen coffees (besides the Griendsteidl) for the Jung Wien , a group of young writers who met here. Its interior is remarkable and worth visiting because it follows the same decorative line Ferstel applied throughout the building. While going out a store captured our attention, Xocolat and you can see why – it’s the chocolate paradise made in Vienna.

Partilha ementa com o Café Museum e o Hofburg por isso não aporta grandes novidades no capítulo culinário o que realmente dá mais valor ao Residenz é o facto de estar em pleno Palácio de Schönbrunn com um interior que achei um pouco antiquado (achei os outros dois mais interessantes) mas com detalhes que lhe dão algum charme como por exemplo o pianista ao fundo da sala ou o móvel de balcão com a vitrina de doces como se vivessemos no principio do século XX.

It shares the menu with the Cafe Museum and the Hofburg so it did not brings major innovations in the culinary chapter but what really adds more value to the Residenz is the fact that it is in the Schönbrunn Palace with an interior that I thought was a bit dated (I found the other two more interesting) but with details that give it some charm such as a pianist at the back of the room or the bar furniture with the candy shop window as if we lived in the beginning of the twentieth century.

Aqui decidi provar o Goulash, tinha dado um passeio pelo Palácio e os seus jardins achei que merecia uma recompensa. É um prato pesado, intenso a nível de sabor que aqui encontrei equilibrado, pedimos uma variedade de pães que ajudou a saborear o molho mas que fez com que não houvesse mais espaço para sobremesas. Para a mesa veio ainda um prato de salada César de proporção generosa e um prato de salchichas típicas da região que mesmo ao partilhar não foram capaz de terminar. Os preços estão ao nível dos outros restaurantes e podemos comer por 15€-20€ por pessoa.
Here I decide to taste the goulash, I had walked through the Palace and its gardens so I thought I deserved a reward. It is a heavy dish, the intense level of flavor that balanced found here, I ordered a variety of breads that helped to taste the sauce but that meant that there was no more room for desserts. For the others in our table also came a Caesar salad dish of generous proportion and a typical sausages dish that even sharing they were not able to finish. Prices are at the level of other restaurants and we eat for 15 € -20 € per person.

Mercado de Natal Schönbrunn – Viena, Áustria

Viena tem vários mercados de Natal, dois deles já colocámos aqui no blog e um dos mais famosos é o do Rathausplatz mas visitar um que está aos pé de um Palácio é sem dúvida muito interessante e surpreendente. Ao centro da praça uma grande árvore de Natal que durante a noite se ilumina e as várias bancas vendem produtos artesanais alguns podemos ver noutros mercados mas ainda assim é sempre interessante ver as velas feitas á mão, os enfeites em porcelana e pintados á mão ou os esculpidos em madeira, entre outros produtos.
 
Vienna has several Christmas markets, two of them I already published on the blog and one of the most famous is the Rathausplatz but to visit one that at the feet of a Palace is certainly very interesting and surprising. At the center of the square a large Christmas tree that during the night light’s up and various stalls sell handicrafts some we can see in other markets yet it is always interesting to see the handmade candles, the ornaments in porcelainand hand painted or carved in wood, among other products.

Chegámos á Karlsplatz depois de visitar o Palácio de Verão da familia real, já estava um pouco cansada mas a animação do mercado de Natal com a Karlskirche como pano de fundo fez ganhar um novo fôlego. É uma das maiores da cidade e á sua volta para além da igreja podemos encontrar uma universidade, o Musikverein (uma sala de concertos) e pelo Künstlerhaus, assim como dos pavilhões desenhados por Otto Wagner.

We reached the Karlsplatzafter visiting the Summer Palace of the Royalfamily, I was already a littletiredbut the animationof the Christmasmarket with the Karlskirche as a backdrop made me regain my strenght. It isone of thecity’s largest squaresandaround it,in addition to thechurchwe can finda university,theMusikverein(concert hall) and the Künstlerhaus, we can also see the pavilions designed by OttoWagner.

Graben – Viena, Áustria

Visitar Viena no Natal tem o inconveniente do frio mas a grande vantagem da iluminação e animação que vemos pelas suas ruas, uma das que mais me chamou a atenção foi a Graben mesmo sem antes saber que é muito conhecida e é onde algumas das lojas mais caras abrem as suas portas. Dizem que tem a sua origem no século XIII e já com caracteristicas comerciais porque há registos da venda de frutas e verduras num mercado que aqui decorria.

Visit Vienna at Christmas season has the disadvantage of the cold but the great advantage of lighting and animation we see through its streets, one that most caught my attention was the Graben even without knowing that it was well known and is where some of the most expensive stores open their doors. They say it has its origin in the thirteenth century and already with commercial characteristics as there are records of the sale of fruits and vegetables in a market that stemmed here.

De passagem para o centro da cidade encontrámos o Burggarten, o jardim que está junto ao Palácio de Hofburg construído no século XIX pelos Habsburgo era nessa altura conhecido como o Jardim do Imperador (Kaisergarten), o seu uso era privado e exclusivo para a familia real até que em 1919 foi aberto ao público.

Passing through to the city center we found the Burggarten, the garden that is by the Hofburg Palace built in the nineteenth century by the Habsburg family was then known as the Emperor’s Garden (Kaisergarten), its use was private and exclusive to the royal family until in 1919 it was open to the public.

Duas estátuas fazem com que a visita a este parque seja obrigatória, a primeira dedicada a Mozart que se vê rodeado de canteiros de flores em forma de notas musicais e a segunda do Imperador Francisco José I que utilizava este jardim. O que mais aproveitámos deste parque foi a estufa das palmeiras – a Palmenhaus – uma construção de estilo Art Noveau e onde aproveitámos para tomar uma cerveja antes de ir jantar. É um café restaurante agradável com bastante luz.
Two statues make the visit to this park mandatory, the first dedicated to Mozart that is seen surrounded by flower beds in the shape of musical notes and the second of Emperor Franz Joseph who used this garden. But what we enjoyed the most was the palm trees greenhouse – the Palmenhaus – a stylish Art Nouveau building and where we took the opportunity to have a beer before going to dinner. It’s a nice cafe restaurant with plenty of light.

Ainda em período de adaptação entre o Le Meridién que foi o nosso hotel original no centro da cidade para o NH Danube City junto á ONU, procurámos um sitio para jantar numa zona praticamente deserta durante a noite. Decidimos perguntar na recepção e confirmaram-nos que o Zur Alte Kaisermühle. Era uma boa opção e estava a pouco mais de cinco minutos a pé. Depois de andar por umas ruas de casas onde não se via viva alma chegámos a este animado restaurante que seria ainda mais extraordinário se tivéssemos ido durante o dia porque tem vista para um lago.

Still in adjustment period between the Le Meridien which was our original hotel in the city center and the NH Danube City near the UN, we were looking for a place to have dinner in a nearly deserted area at night. We decided to ask the front desk and they confirmed to us that the Alte Zur Kaisermühle. It was a good choice and was just over five minutes walk. After walking for some streets with just houses where you could not see a soul we arrived at this lively restaurant that would be even more extraordinary if we had gone during the day because it overlooks a lake.
Entrámos e por dentro a decoração era rústica, estava bastante cheio mas ainda assim conseguimos mesa. A carta anunciava que a especialidade da casa era o entrecosto, não identificávamos Viena como uma cidade de comida na brasa mas o mito caiu quando provámos esse prato. Faltou-nos perguntar pelo o tamanho das doses porque pedimos uma para cada uma (éramos quatro) e creio que o ideal teria sido uma para duas porque sobrou comida. O entrecosto (15,50€) era saboroso e estava bastante bom, vinha com alguns molhos que não faziam falta, as batatas fritas também estavam óptimas e essas tiveram direito a mergulhar num molho de alho.
Depois de tudo isto já não havia espaço para sobremesa aliás o caminho para regressar ao hotel parecia já demasiado curto porque sentíamos que necessitávamos de uma volta maior. Sentimos que foi uma grande descoberta.

We went inside and the decor was rustic, it was quite full but still managed to table. The menu announced that the specialty of the house was ribs, we didn’t saw Vienna as a city of barbecue food but the myth dropped when we tasted this dish. We should have asked about portion sizes before because we ordered one for each (we were four) and I think the ideal solution would have been for two because there was some letf food. The ribs (€ 15.50) were delicious and quite good, came with some sauces that were extra, the fries were also great and these were to dip in the garlic sauce.After all this we had no room for dessert and our way to return to the hotel seemed far too short because we felt that we needed a bigger track. We felt it was a great Discovery.

Quando pensas numa casa de Verão não consegues imaginar que seria o Schönbrunn mas pensando nessa funcionalidade que a Imperatriz Maria Teresa o mandou construir, ela que teve dezasseis filhos e mais que nenhum outro monarca precisava de algo tão grandioso. Tudo começou com um pequeno pavilhão de caça e sobre ele outro palácio que Leopoldo I tinha projetado para o seu filho mas foi o pai de Maria Teresa que lhe ofereceu e ela aproveitou para o transformar no que agora chamam”Versalhes de Viena”. E é inevitável deixar de fazer comparações.

When you think of as ummer house you can not imagine that would be the Schönbrunn but thinking of that functionality made Empress Maria Theresa built it, she had sixteen children and more than any other monarch needed something this grand. It all started with a small hunting lodge and on to another palace which Leopold I had designedf or his son but the father of Maria Theresa decided to give it to her and she took advantage to turn it in what is now called “Versailles of Vienna”. And it isinevitable not to make comparisons.

PRAÇA MARIA TERESA – VIENA, ÁUSTRIA

Ao passear pela cidade fui descobrindo também a história do grande Império Austro-Húngaro e sobre a extraordinária Casa dos Habsburgo, a mesma que governou Espanha com o Imperador Carlos V. Mas esta praça está dedicada a uma mulher, a única Habsburgo a ser coroada Rainha e a governar várias regiões que se estendiam até Itália, Maria Teresa e os seus muitos nomes próprios como Amália e Cristina. Ao centro está um monumento dedicado a uma soberana que conta a história foi muito feliz ao lado do seu marido, teve vários filhos (era a mãe de Maria Antonieta) e governou durante quarenta anos um dos impérios mais invejados do mundo.
As you stroll through the city I was also discovering the history of the great Austro-Hungarian Empire and the extraordinary House of Habsburg, the same that ruled Spain with the Emperor Charles V. But this square is dedicated to a woman, the only Habsurg to be crowned Queen and to govern various regions extending to Italy, Maria Teresa and her many names like Amalia and Cristina. At the center there is a monument dedicated to a sovereign that the story tells that was very happy with her husband, she had several children (she was the mother of Marie Antoinette) and ruled for forty years one of the most envied empires of the world.

 

A praça que liga a Ringstrasse ao Museumquartier tem dois museus importantes nas suas laterais, um de Arte e o outro de História Natural, construídos na mesma época e inaugurados no final do século XIX pelo imperador Franz Joseph. Dizem que os Habsburgo tinham uma coleção impressionante de obras de arte e este museu mostra algumas delas como por exemplo o retrato da Infanta Margarita Teresa por Velázquez, a Torre de Babel de Bruegel ou o Verão de Arcimboldo. Já o museu de História Natural tem a famosa Venus de Willendorf e uma réplica do Diplodocus.
Quando visitei a praça estava a funcionar o Mercado de Natal que é muito mais interessante durante a noite com toda a iluminação.
The square connecting the Ringstrasse to the Museumsquartier has two important museums on its side,the Art and the other of Natural History, built around the same time and inaugurated in the late nineteenth century by Emperor Franz Joseph. They say that the Habsburgs had an impressive collection of works of art and this museum shows some of them, like the portrait of the Infanta Margarita Teresa by Velázquez, the Tower of Babel by Bruegel or Arcimboldo’s Summer. The Natural history museum has the famous Venus of Willendorf and a replica of the Diplodocus.When I visited the square the Christmas Market was going on and it is much more interesting at night with all the lighting.

LE MERIDIEN – VIENA, ÁUSTRIA

O hotel Le Meridien não seria a minha primeira escolha em Viena por apenas uma questão: o preço. A sua localização, o bom gosto e conforto dos quartos, o serviço valem mesmo a pena mas o melhor preço que vi rondava os 150€ por noite. Fui a trabalho e aproveitámos muito este hotel com o pequeno-almoço, refeições etc.. mas o melhor mesmo era sair á rua e estar mesmo ao lado do centro, a poucos minutos da Ópera e da Praça de Maria Teresa.


The hotel Le Meridien would not be my first choice in Vienna for just one reason: the price. Its location, the good taste and comfort of the rooms, the service are really worth it but the best price we‘ve seen was around € 150 per night. I went to work and took advantage of this hotel with breakfast, meals etc .. but the best thing was to get out to the street and be right next to the center, just minutes away from the Opera House and the Maria Theresa Square.

O meu quarto era pequeno mas confortável, suficiente para as duas noites que fiquei. Com uma decoração equilibrada e moderna, era também bastante funcional com uma zona de escritório que foi bastante útil. O que me surpreendeu foi mesmo a banheira cor-de-rosa na casa de banho, uma pena não ter tido tempo para aproveitá-la porque os poucos momentos livres utilizei para conhecer Viena. Têm quartos maiores mas serão obviamente mais caros. Conta ainda com um ginásio e um SPA fabuloso que só pude espreitar. As refeições foram sempre em buffet com pratos típicos de Viena e uma especial nota para o pequeno-almoço que tinha bastante variedade onde gostei muito do pão principalmente os pretzel.
My room was small but comfortable enough for the two nights I stayed. With a balanced, modern decor it was also quite functional with an office area that was quite helpful. What surprised me was the pink bath in the bathroom, a pity I did not have time to enjoy it because the few free moments I had I used to discover Vienna. They have larger rooms but are obviously more expensive. There is also a gym and a fabulous SPA which I could only peek. The meals were always buffet with typical dishes of Vienna and a special note for the breakfast that had enough variety where I liked the bread especially the pretzel.
