A Rua Cândido dos Reis juntamente com a Galerias de Paris são duas das minhas ruas preferidas no Porto. É verdade que sempre as visitei de noite e isso faz toda a diferença, são das mais animadas da cidade, das mais boémias, sempre com gente na rua e nos bares.
De dia a história é um pouco diferente mas assim consegues realmente prestar atenção aos detalhes dos edifícios e ao ambiente que faz lembrar Paris.
The Rua Cândido dos Reis along with Galerias de Paris are two of my favorite streets in Porto. It is true that I always visited at night and that makes all the difference, they are the liveliest of the city, the most bohemian, always with people on the street and in bars.
By day the story is a little different but this way you can really pay attention to the details of the buildings and the environment that is reminiscent of Paris.

Rua da Cedofeita – Porto, Portugal

É uma conhecida rua de comércio no centro do Porto, não tão conhecida como a Santa Catarina e as suas lojas não são das mais modernas como as que podemos ver no Centro Comercial Bombarda.
Para mim o grande interesse desta rua são os seus edificios antigos (os mais antigos do século XVIII) com a sua arquitectura típica, estreitos com a fachada decorada de azulejos.
It is a known shopping Street in central Porto, not as well known as Santa Catarina and its stores are not the most modern as we can see in the Centro Comercial Bombarda.
For me the great interest of this street are its old buildings (the oldest of the eighteenth century) with its typical architecture, narrow façade decorated with tiles.

Depois de disfrutar da fantástica vista sobre o Porto que a Torre dos Clérigos proporciona encontramos a montra de uma loja de visita obrigatória: A Vida Portuguesa. Pode parecer cliché mas é realmente uma viagem ao passado e basta olhar para a montra para regressar á minha infancia.
Não é apenas uma loja é uma homenagem aos productos nacionais e uma agradável surpresa ver que muitos ainda hoje sobrevivem para contar a sua história.
 
After enjoying the fantastic views of Porto provided by the Clérigos Tower we found the window of a shop which visit is mandatory: “A Vida Portuguesa”. It may sound like a cliché but it really is a trip to past and just looking at the store window made me return to my childhood.
This is not just one store it’s a tribute to national products and a pleasant surprise to see that many still survive to tell their story.

Chamaram-me logo a atenção os sabonetes Musgo Real, não que fosse marca que entrasse lá em casa, lá era mais sabão azul mas ainda resiste desde 1920 e que continua com aquela imagem impecável. Os chocolates Regina (que agora me dizem que se vendem nos supermercados outra vez), as conservas Tricana, as pastilhas Gorila, aquelas louças em forma de couve que a minha mãe tinha umas quantas e que decidiram deitar fora. E não me posso esquecer da Pasta de dentes Couto que quando era miúda e ajudava na loja da minha irmã ficava surpreendida de ainda se vender…e bem!
 
The  Musgo Real soaps called my attention right away, it was not a brand that we had at home, there was more blue soap (old cheap blue soap) but  it resists since 1920 and it continues with that flawless image. The chocolates Regina (now some say me that they are sold in supermarkets again), canned Tricana, Gorilla gums, those dishes in the form of cabbage that my mother had a few and decided to throw out. And I can not forget Couto Toothpaste that when I was a kid and helped my sister in the store I was surprised tthat they were still being sold … and well!
É de visita obrigatória principalmente para voltarmos a ter orgulho nas nossas marcas, para valorizar as que ainda hoje lutam num mercado que está cada vez mais (e pelas circunstancias económicas) orientado para o preço baixo a qualquer custo.
 
Visiting it is mandatory specially to regain pride in our brands, value those that today are still fighting in a market (that due to the economical circumstances) is more Price driven at any cost.

Salamanca é talvez um dos melhores bairros de Madrid para viver, comer, beber e ir “de compras”. São várias as ruas que podemos percorrer com lojas de todos os tipos, desde pequenas marcas a internacionais, desde a Zara á Chanel. A rua José Ortega y Gasset poderia ser apenas mais uma rua do bairro não fosse o facto de nela estarem algumas das marcas mais luxuosas do mercado como Valentino, Roberto Cavalli, Chanel, Cartier, Armani, Dior e Louis Vuitton.
 
Salamanca is problably one of the best neighborhoods of Madrid to live, eat, drink and go shopping. There are several streets that you can walk with many kinds o stores, from smaller brands to international, from Zara to Chanel. The street José Ortega y Gasset could be just one more Salamanca street if it wasn’t for the fact that in it there are some of the most luxurious brands in the market like Valentino, Roberto Cavalli, Chanel, Cartier, Armani, Dior e Louis Vuitton.

Foi também nesta rua que a Abercrombie & Fitch decidiu abrir a sua primeira loja em Espanha (Já tinha entrada com as Hollister). Devo admitir que a minha carteira não me permite entrar sequer em alguma destas lojas…bom talvez a Abercrombie, que até gosto mas não lhe reconheço uma boa relação preço/qualidade que me compense comprar ali.
Ainda assim para quem pode, esta rua juntamente com a Serrano e a Velazquez fazem parte do circuito habitual. Já a Lagasca por exemplo foi onde vi florescer pequenas lojas interessantes onde podes fugir das marcas mais comerciais e comprar algo diferente.
Também nesta rua encontramos a Lavinia, um bar e loja de vinhos com uma grande selecção desde vinhos da zona da Rioja e Ribeira do Douro a vinhos franceses, italianos e claro, portugueses.
 
It was also in this street that Abercrombie & Fitch decided to open it’s first store in Spain (they had only the Hollister’s). I must admit that my wallet doesn’t even allow me to get into to one of these stores…well maybe Abercrombie, which I like but I still don’t think it’s relation price/quality makes me buy there.
Still for those who can, this street combined with Serrano and Velazquez are part of the usual circuit. Lagasca for example is where I saw new and interesting stores bloom where you can escape from the usual comercial brands and buy something different.
Also in this street we found Lavinia, a bar and wine shop with a great selection from wines from the Rioja and Ribera del Doura areas to french, italian and of course, portuguese wines.

Para quem vive em Madrid será uma da praças mais emblemáticas e talvez polémicas. No ano de 1808 e no dia 2 de Maio os madrilenhos iniciam a sua revolta contra a ocupação francesa dando origem á guerra peninsular.
Está no boémio bairro de Malasaña que tem também um história curiosa ligada á ocupação francesa já que o bairro recebeu esse nome pela morte de uma famosa costureira que se chamava Maria Malasaña, assassinada pelos franceses nesse mesmo dia com a desculpa de estaria armada e por isso pertencia á revolta.
 
For anyone living in Madrid is one of the most emblematic squares and perhaps controversial. In the year 1808, and on May 2 the Madrileños began their uprising against the French occupation starting the peninsular war.
Is in the bohemian neighborhood of Malasaña who also has a curious history attached to the French occupation since the district received that name for the death of a famous seamstress who was called Maria Malasaña, murdered by the French on the same day with the excuse that she was armed and therefore belonged was with the uprising.

Desde então o bairro e esta praça em particular têm muitas histórias para contar e na década de 1980, muitas delas não eram das melhores. Ali nasce a “movida” e também uma zona de drogas e decadência que lhe conferiu durante muito tempo uma personalidade mais dura. Hoje o bairro renasceu das cinzas, é um dos mais requisitados de Madrid e com ele a Plaza dos de Mayo, com as suas agradáveis esplanadas, parques infantis (são pequenos mas têm um em cada canto da praça) e este mercado o Dosde Market que se realiza aos Sábados.

Since then the neighborhood and this square in particular have many stories to tell, and in the 1980s, many of them were not the best. Here the “movida“ is born and also a zone of drugs and decadence that gave it for long time a tougher personality. Today the neighborhood is reborn from the ashes, is one of the busiest of Madrid and with it the Plaza de Mayo, with its pleasant terraces, playgrounds (they are small but they have one in each corner of the square) and this Dosde market that takes place on Saturdays.

 

Este mercado de Diseño que se realiza todos os Sábados (desde que o tempo ajude) tem como objectivo divulgar artistas independentes que têm aqui a oportunidade de vender as suas peças e alguns fazem workshops de DIY (Do It Yourself). Honestamente estava á espera de ver mais bancadas mas ainda assim é um excelente esforço e parece-me bem localizado. Ainda comprei um fio numa bancada que por sinal era de uma portuguesa.
Ao centro da praça está um monumento com a estátua de Daoíz e Velarde, oficiais de artilharia no Quartel de Monteleón que estaria por esta zona e cuja porta está representada por trás.
Á volta bares e restaurantes com esplanadas ajudam a animar a praça que de noite ganha outra vida e talvez não seja “movida” de antigamente mas é certamente um dos sitios preferidos de quem vive na zona para sair.
 
Diseño this market which takes place every Saturday (since time helps) aims to disseminate independent artists here have the opportunity to sell their parts and do some workshops for DIY (Do It Yourself). I was honestly waiting to see more stalls but it’s still a great effort and it seems well placed. Even bought a necklace in a stand which by the way was from a Portuguese.

At the center of the square is a monument with the statue of Daoiz and Velarde, artillery officers in the Monteléon barracks that was around this area and whose gate is represented behind.
Around bars and restaurants with terraces help to liven up the square that by night gains another life may not be has “movida“ as from the past but it is certainly one of the favorite places of those who live in the area to go out.

Eu diria que é a meca das lojas de moda de Roma, foi a rua onde encontrámos a maior concentração de marcas de luxo como Louis Vuitton, Prada, Giorgio Armani, Gucci, Mont Blanc, etc. instaladas em “palazzos” do século XVII e XVIII.
Faz todo o sentido que estas lojas se tenham estabelecido junto á Piazza de Spagna já que era aqui que se faziam muitos desfiles de moda de alta costura em que as  manequins desciam os degraus da famosa praça enquanto “vendiam” os prestigiados modelos de cada criador.
I’d say it’s the mecca of fashion shops of Rome, was the street where we found the highest concentration of luxury brands like Louis Vuitton, Prada, Giorgio Armani, Gucci, Mont Blanc, etc. installed in “palazzos” the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
It makes sense that these stores have been established near the Piazza de Spagna since it was here that many fashion shows of haute couture took place where the models would come down the steps from the famous square while “selling” the prestigious outfits of each creator.

Gran Via – Bilbao, Espanha

O nome completo é Gran Via Don Diego López de Haro e é provavelmente a rua mais importante da cidade, também a mais movimentada. Recebe o nome do fundador da cidade que era no século XIV era uma simples aldeia piscatória, passou depois a vila e o seu porto mercantil dependia directamente do senhorio de Biscaya.
E nestes últimos anos a cidade volta a transformar-se de um passado cinzento ligado a produção industrial e ao porto, para se tornar num centro cosmopolita que podemos testemunhar ao longo da Gran Via. É um verdadeiro centro comercial ao ar livre com algumas das melhores lojas com morada ali, lojas como a Louis Vuitton, a Hugo Boss ou a Suarez.
 
It’s complete name is Gran Via Don Diego López de Haro and is problably the most important street in the city, also one busiest. Named after the founder of the city that was in the fourteenth century just a simple fishing village, it became a town and its commercial port depended directly from the landlord of Biscay.
And in recent years the city transformed itself from a grey past of industrial production and the port to become a cosmopolitan center that we can witness along the Gran Via. It is a true open-air shopping center with some of the best shops there, stores like Louis Vuitton, Hugo Boss or Suarez.

Não podíamos deixar Bruges sem levar connosco alguns dos famosos chocolates artesanais belgas. Os nossos comprámos nesta loja: Stephan Dumon que fica na Simon Stevinplein (Praça de Simon Stevin).
We couldn’t leave Brugge without taking with us some of the famous artisanal belgian chocolat. We bought ours in this store: Stephan Dumon that is in the Simon Stevinplein (Simon Stevin square).


A verdade é que apesar de ser uma loja pequena acabamos por nos perder no seu interior. A variedade é tanta que a escolha se torna dificil e há de tudo um pouco: bombons, tabletes simples, tabletes com pedaços, figuras de chocolate, etc..
Que vontade de comprar a loja toda…

Truth is that despite being a small store we wend up losing ourselves inside of it. So much variety that is difficult to choose there is a bit of everything: bombons, chocolate tablets, tablets with pieces, chocolate figures, etc..
I wanted to buy the whole store…

Esta elegante rua que junta a Piazza del Popolo e a de Spagna é uma das mecas de compras da cidade de Roma principalmente para quem procura grandes marcas como Valentino, Armani e até Chanel. Não é a única mas é sem dúvida uma das mais interessantes e tudo começa pelo nome.
 
This elegant street that connects the Popolo and the Spagna square is one of the shopping mecas of Rome specially for those looking for great brands like Valentino, Armani or even Chanel. It’s not the only street but it is without a doubt one of the most interesting and starting with it’s name.

É uma rua que vai desde a Place Louis Pradel até a Place de Bellecour, famosa por ser um dos “centros” comerciais da cidade Lyon. Para percorrê-la na totalidade seria um longo mas interessante trajecto nós fizémos a parte final que vai desde a Place de la Repúblique até a Bellecour.
Ainda que pequeno, foi sem dúvida interessante por alguns edificios que vimos. Um deles foi o de estilo Art Déco que alberga os dos cinemas Pathé. Estávamos acostumados a ver o símbolo do galo dourado no inicio dos filmes que não associávamos que tivessem salas de cinema próprias, aqui está a prova, para além de produtores são também distribuidores.

It is a street that goes from the Place Louis Pradel to Place Bellecour, famous for being one of the shopping “centre” of the city Lyon. To go through it in its entirety would be a long but interesting journey we made the final part that goes from the Place de la République to Bellecour.
Though small, it was certainly interesting for a few buildings we saw. One was the Art Deco style which houses the Pathé cinemas. We used to see the symbol of the golden rooster in the beginning of movies but we had not associated it with the cinemas themselves, here’s the proof, in addition to producers they are also distributors.

 
Outro dos edificios que nos despertou a atenção foi o da Fnac, apesar da sua fachada estar em obras pudémos ver as duas estátuas que enquadravam a entrada para a loja. Antes de ser uma loja da marca francesa foi a sede do jornal Le Progrès.
Entre lojas de várias marcas internacionais como a Zara, a Etam, podemos encontrar algumas marcas mais luxuosas como por exemplo a Heyroud (sapataria e marroquinaria).
 
Another of the buildings that caught our eye was the Fnac one, despite its facade was still in the works we were able to see the two statues that framed the entrance to the store. Before being a store of French Brand it was the headquarters of the newspaper Le Progres.
Between stores of various international brands like Zara, Etam, we can find some more luxurious brands such as Heyroud (shoe and leather goods).
