Antes do nosso passeio pelo Museumplein tomámos o pequeno-almoço aqui no Vrolyk. Era domingo de manhã, as ruas estavam vazias e este espaço também, longe da confusão da zona mais antiga de Amsterdão, aqui encontrámos tranquilidade e a confirmação de que voltei a apaixonar-me pelo leite com chocolate como ele deveria ser feito, um copo de leite quente e umas pepitas de chocolate.
 
Before our stroll in the Museumplein we thad breakfast here at the Vrolyk. It was Sunday morning, the streets were empty and this space as well, away from the oldest part of Amsterdam, here we found tranquility and confirmation that I came to  love chocolate milk milk and the way it should be done, a glass of hot milk and some chocolate chips.

Como eram as nossas últimas horas na cidade pedimos um pequeno-almoço reforçado, uma cookie de chocolate para cada um, um croissant com doce e um brioche de limão. Estava tudo tão bom que apetecia ficar para o lanche e voltar a pedir o mesmo.
O espaço apesar de demasiado cor-de-rosa para mim, era bastante agradável e acolhedor. Pagámos 15€ por duas pessoas o preço que nos pediam no hotel por um pequeno-almoço mas só para uma pessoa mas para sempre fica a memória daquele delicioso brioche de limão acompanhado por um chocolate quente como deve de ser.
 
Because these were our last few hours in town we ordered a big breakfast with a chocolate chip cookie for each, a croissant and brioche with fresh lemon. It was so good that I felt like staying for the afternoon snack and ask the same thing.
The space though too pink for me, was very nice and cozy. We paid € 15 for two people the price we were asked in the hotel for a breakfast but only for one person and in my the memory will stay forever that delicious lemon brioche accompanied by hot chocolate as it should be.

Para os que procuram a tradicional foto no I amsterdam e não a tiraram por exemplo no aeroporto, a Museumplein (ou Praça dos Museus) oferece um excelente cenário com vista para o famoso Rijksmuseum. Mas mais que praça eu diría que é um parque porque tem um excelente relvado com algum arvoredo e foi um dos sitios mais agradáveis para dar um passeio.
For those looking for the traditional photo in the I amsterdam and didn’t took it for eg at the airport, the Museumplein (Museum Square or) offers a great setting overlooking the famous Rijksmuseum. But more than that I would say the square is a park because it has a great lawn  and was one of the nicest places to take a walk.

Henri Willig – Amsterdão, Holanda

A história do caril repete-se com o queijo, lembro-me ser miúda e odiar até o cheiro principalmente se era o flamengo hoje, adoro! São o meu calcanhar de Aquiles e um dos responsáveis pelo facto de não gostar de olhar para a balança. A Holanda é muito famosa pelas suas túlipas e pelos seus queijos por isso há varias lojas espalhadas por Amsterdão, nós entrámos esta a Henri Willig, não sabemos se é a melhor mas gostei de todos os queijos que provei.
The story repeats itself curry with cheese, I remember being little and hate even the smell especially if it was the Flamengo today, I love it! It’s my Achilles heel and the one responsible for disliking to look at the scale. The Netherlands is very famous for its tulips and their cheeses so there are several stores in Amsterdam, we entered this on of Henri Willig, I do not know if it’s the best but I liked all the cheeses we tasted.

Balti House – Amsterdão, Holanda

Se há quinze anos atrás alguém me pergunta se gostava de comida indiana a resposta seria não. Aos poucos fui aprendendo a gostar escolhendo pratos com menos picante e principalmente pedindo cestos de pão naan. Quando pesquisei restaurantes na cidade de Amsterdão e específicamente no bairro do De Pijp saltou á vista o Balti House, um indiano muito elogiado pela qualidade da sua comida principalmente o Caril.
If fifteen years ago someone asked me if I liked Indian food the answer would be no. Gradually I learned to like it choosing dishes less spicy and mostly asking baskets of naan bread. When I was searching restaurants in the city of Amsterdam and specifically in the neighborhood of De Pijp and the Balti House jumped to my sight, an Indian highly praised for the quality of its food especially it’s curry.

Antes de publicar este post pensei muito no título De Wallen ou o Red-Light District? Acabei por optar pelo primeiro, porque apesar da prostituição dar a fama ao bairro a verdade é que se conseguimos retirar essa parte da equação é uma zona onde podes tirar fotos dignas de postal, com os seus edificios antigos inclinados sobre os canais.
Before publishing this post I put much thought in the title De Wallen or Red-Light District? I ended up opting for the first, because despite the fact that the prostitution gives the name to the neighborhood the truth is that if we can remove this part of the equation it’s an area where you can take photos worthy of postcards, with its old buildings leaning over the channels.

Praça Dam – Amsterdão, Holanda

Na mais agitada praça de Amsterdão (senão a mais) podemos encontrar dois dos edificios mais importantes do centro, um é o Koninklijk Paleis a residencia oficial da Rainha Beatriz e agora do seu filho, Rei Guilherme Alexandre. O outro é a Nieuwe Kerk, a igreja que está ao lado do Palácio e que apesar do nome, nova na realidade não é uma vez que foi construída no século XV.
In the busiest square in Amsterdam (if not more) we can find two of the most important buildings in the center, one is the Koninklijk Paleis the official residence of Queen Beatrix and now his son, King William Alexander. The other is the Nieuwe Kerk, a church that is next to the Palace and that despite the name, is not really new since it was built in the fifteenth century.

As duas Heineken que bebemos no Experience pediam acompanhamento, tínhamos passado por praça entre o Albert Cruypmarket e o museu da famosa marca de cerveja que tinha alguns restaurantes com boa pinta, um deles era o Pilsvogel. Nem tinha percebido que era um bar de tapas mas era exactamente o queríamos comer, a versão holandesa do conceito de tapas porque queríamos partilhar.
Apesar da chuva decidimos ficar fora, sentadinhos perto da janela onde estavam as almofadas pasmados com a descontracção dos holandeses que iam passando sem pressa enquanto caía uma carga de água. 
 
The two Heineken we drank in the Experience were asking for some company, we had passed this square between Albert Cruypmarket and the famous beer museum that had some appeling restaurants, one of them was Pilsvogel. We did not realize it was a tapas bar but it was exactly what we wanted to eat, the Dutch version of the concept of tapas because we wanted to share.
Despite the rain we decided to stay out sitting down near the window cozy in the cushins amazed with the relaxation of the Dutch that strolled without rushing despite the heavy rain.

 
Queriamos comer rápido e algo mais leve, a primeira escolha foi uma salada de queijo de cabra uqe vinha com nozes, tomate (delicioso) e muito bem temperada. Pedimos também duas sandes, uma Caprese (com mozzarella e tomate) e a Steak sándwich com molho tartar, a verdadeira estrela do nosso almoço. Têm de facto uma carta de Tapas mas talvez por ser hora de almoço só nos deram uma carta á base de saladas e sandes.
Foi um bom almoço, ficou por provar o Hamburguer de Black Angus porque a julgar pela qualidade do bife da nossa sandes deve ser muito bom. Nada de sobremesas porque queríamos ir comer ao Small World. Pagámos 24€ com duas coca-colas.
 
We wanted to eat something light and quick, the first choice was a salad of goat cheese that came with nuts, tomatoes (delicious) and it was very well seasoned. We also ordered two sandwiches a Caprese (with mozzarella and tomato) and Steak sandwich with tartar sauce, the real star of our lunch. They do have a Tapas menu but maybe because it was lunch hour they only gave us a menú of salads and sandwiches.
It was a good lunch, next time we must taste the Black Angus burger because judging by the quality of our steak sandwiches it must be very good. No desserts because we wanted to go and eat at Small World. We paid € 24 with two cokes.

Andávamos ás voltas com o mapa e com o GPS, tudo indicava que estávamos perto do Begijnhof mas o que víamos não parecia ser o que procurávamos até que começámos a ver que de um edificio de tijolo entrava e saía muita gente, aproximei-me e dizia Begijnhof. Passámos a porta com a sensação de que estávamos a entrar num jardim secreto, esperava mais tranquilidade mas ali celebrava-se um casamento.
 
We were walking around with the map and GPS, it appeared that we were near the Begijnhof but what we saw did not seem to be what we were looking for until we started to see people coming in and out from a brick building, I approached and it said Begijnhof. We passed the door with the feeling that we were entering a secret garden, I hoped it would be more quiet but there was a wedding being celebrated there.

O Begijnhof é um conjunto de casas com a arquitectura típica da cidade onde vivia um grupo de mulheres religiosas conhecidas por Beguinas, funcionava como um convento mas estas religiosas não tinham feito os votos. 
Foi construido na época medieval (séc. XIV) e uma da suas casas mais antigas é também uma das poucas em madeira que existe na cidade, Houten Huys ou a Casa de Madeira.
Á entrada estava uma estátua de uma Beguina com o seu traje típico, a última morreu na década de 70. Passando a igreja inglesa que não pudémos visitar por causa do casamento vemos um pátio com outra estátua, a de Jesús obra do escultor Johannes Petrus Maas.
Apesar de aberto ao público há partes onde não podemos entrar, são áreas exclusivas de residentes.
 
The Begijnhof is a group of houses with the town’s typical architecture where there a group of religious women known as Beguines lived, it worked as a convent but they had not made religious vows.
It was built in medieval times (XIV century) and one of their older homes is also one of the few wood that still exist in the city, it’s called Houten Huys or House of Wood.
At the entrance was a statue of a Beguine with his typical attire, the last died in the 70s. Passing the English church thay we weren’t able to visit because of the wedding we see a courtyard with another statue, of Jesús a work of sculptor Petrus Johannes Maas.
Although open to the public there are parts where we can not go in,they are exclusive areas for residents.

Quanto mais penso na escolha de hotel (e como foi uma opção cara) mais vejo que foi acertada porque estavámos ao lado do De Pijp, o animado bairro a que chamam “Quartier Latin”. Uma das suas ruas mais agitadas é a Albert Cuyp onde de segunda a sábado podemos visitar o seu mercado.
Dizem que o melhor dia para ir é o Sábado, há mais gente, mais agitação e também mais bancas, foi precisamente o dia que fomos e nem mesmo a chuva impedia que se fizesse a compra aqui.
 
The more I think about the choice of hotel (and it was an expensive option) I see that was more because we were right next to De Pijp, the lively neighborhood they call “Quartier Latin”. One of its busy streets is the Albert Cuyp Monday to Saturday where we can visit your market.
They say the best day to go is Saturday, there are more people, more excitement and also more stalls, it was precisely the day we went and not even the rain made ​​it impossible to make a purchase here.

Neste mercado encontras de tudo um pouco, tem um parte de alimentação mas outra dedicada a roupa, sapatos, bijuteria, decoração e chegámos a encontrar bancadas com relógios que eram cópias baratas de marcas como a Breitling (assustador!).
Na parte da alimentação tens uma grande variedade de productos reflexo do bairro e do facto de viverem ali varias nacionalidades, podes encontrar frutos exóticos mas também o seu produto tradicional, como o queijo.
Adorámos as bancadas de peixe fresco e marisco, a bancada do frango assado em que o vendedor ia dizendo aos clientes para não terem medo de provar e oferecia uma coxa. E não podiam faltar as flores haviam várias que vendiam tulipas, rosas entre outras.
Gostava tanto que os senhores aqui do nosso bairro pusessem os olhos nisto, cada vez que vou ao mercado há três bancadas de frutas e verduras, tudo o resto é de roupa barata.
 
In this market you can find a little of everything, it has a part for food but another part dedicated to clothing, shoes, jewelry, home decor and we got to find benches with watches that were knockoffs of brands like Breitling (scary!).
In the food part they have a wide range of products reflecting the neighborhood and the fact that several nationalities live there, you can find exotic fruits but also its the more traditional products such as cheese.
We loved the stands of fresh fish and seafood, the rotisserie chicken stall in which the seller was telling clients not to be afraid to try and offered a thigh. And you couldn’t miss the flowers they had several stalls selling tulips, roses and others.
I would love for the people of our neighborhood to put their eyes on this, every time I go to the market there are three stands of fruits and vegetables, everything else is cheap clothing.

Small World – Amsterdão, Holanda

O nome foi muito bem escolhido, Small porque o sitio é pequeno e visto de fora não dás muito por ele. World porque tem comida internacional e porque (dizem que) os seus proprietários são Australianos e Catering porque foi essa a origem do negócio que mais tarde abriu as portas aqui neste pequeno cantinho no bairro Jordaan.
The name was well chosen, Small because the site is small and seen from the outside not much you give him. World because it has international food and because (some say) their owners are Australians and Catering because this was the origin of the business which later opened its doors here in this little corner of the Jordaan district.
