Quando saímos da Penn Station e pisámos por primeira vez no chão de Manhattan passámos pela Pret a Manger que ficava numa esquina na 7ª Avenida, ficámos curiosos para ver o que era e um dia ao pequeno-almoço decidimos ir espreitar. Pertence a uma cadeia de restaurantes inglesa que surgiu nos anos 80 com um conceito de comida rápida mas saudável e natural sem descuidar do sabor.

When we came out of Penn Station and stepped on the floor for the first time in Manhattan spent by Pret a Manger which was a corner on 7th Avenue, we were curious to see what it was and one day at breakfast we decided to go peek. Belongs to a chain of restaurants that has emerged in English 80 with a concept of fast food but healthy and natural without neglecting the taste.

Decidimos provar os seus muffins e comparando com os do Starbucks não me pareceram tão saborosos talvez porque o seu conceito é mais saudável e abdicam de algum tipo de aditivo de sabor. Tomámos cappucinos, devo dizer que ia escolher um hot chocolate mas quando vi que tinha o triplo das calorias do café com leite desisti, isto porque eles colocam a informação calórica junto com o preço o que te faz logo mudar de ideias em relação a alguma coisa que vais comer.
O café funcionava com uma máquina de self-service onde tu podias servir-te como mais gostas (estaria óptimo para os espanhóis), com mais leite ou menos, da variedade que preferes, etc.. É só recolher o café e pagar na caixa.
Por ser uma companhia de “fast-food” (ainda que natural) o seu espaço não é tão acolhedor como pode ser por exemplo o do Starbucks, está pensado para entrar e comer rápido. Os muffins custavam $2 cada um e os capuccinos $3.

We decided to try their muffins and comparing with Starbucks did not seem as tasty perhaps because its concept is healthier and gives up some kind of additive flavor. We took a cappucino, I would say choose a hot chocolate but when I saw that had triple the calories latte gave up, that because they put calorie information along with the price that makes you just change your mind about something you’ll eat.
The coffee machine worked with a self-service where you could serve you as more like (would be great for Spanish) with more milk or less, of the variety that you prefer, etc. .. It’s just coffee collect and pay in cash .
Being a company of “fast-food” (albeit natural) your space is not as cozy as can be for example Starbucks, is thought to come in and eat fast. The muffins costing $ 2 each and $ 3 lattes.

Queria conhecer a famosa loja da m&m’s em Nova Iorque mas devo confessar que depois de ter estado na de Londres o impacto que poderia ter tido foi reduzido á simples curiosidade de saber o que tinha de diferente. Mais pequena que a sua “prima” na Europa, tem três andares de chocolates da marca e merchandising como t-shirts, canecas, material de escritorio, roupa para bébés, jogos, etc..
 
I wanted to visit the famous m&m’s store in New York but I must confess that after visiting the one in London the impact it might have had was reduced to simple curiosity to discover what was different. Smaller than its “cousin“ in Europe, has three floors of chocolate brand and merchandising as t–shirts, mugs, office equipment, clothing for babies, games, etc..

A diferença entre as várias lojas é o tema, sendo Nova Iorque podemos encontrar todo o tipo de material com a Estátua da Liberdade interpretada pela Miss Green, o Azul vestido de Elvis, o Vermelho vestido de Bombeiro. Um dos meus preferidos foi o tema do Star Wars que podemos encontrar em alguns productos como o dispensador de m&m’s. Como em outras lojas podemos ver as grandes paredes com tubos cheios de coloridos m&m’s que podes combinar a gosto e depois pagar na caixa.
Fica na Times Square por isso não deve ser difícil de encontrá-a, em frente está outra loja de chocolates mas da marca Hershey’s.
 
The difference between the various stores is the theme, and in the New York one you can find all kinds of stuff liked the Statue of Liberty played by Miss Green, Blue as Elvis, Red dressed has a Fireman. One of my favorites was the Star Wars theme that we find in some products like the m&m’s dispenser. Like in the other stores there are the big walls with tubes filled with colored m&m‘s which you can mix at your taste and then pay in the register.
It’s in Times Square so it should not be difficult to find, opposite to it there is another chocolate shop but  of the Hershey’s Brand.

Digam o que disserem uma vez em Nova Iorque tens que passar por aqui. Não me pareceu tão grande como via nos filmes ou séries, tinha uma multidão de gente á noite e durante o dia parecia mais tranquila, comparando os dois claro.
Este é local onde a Sétima Avenida se encontra com a boémia Broadway provocando o espectáculo de luzes que podemos ver com os anúncios a musicais, concertos, séries de televisão ou publicidade de marcas de moda, bebidas, etc..
 
Say what you want but once in New York you have to go through here. It did not seem as big as I saw in movies or series, had a crowd of people at night and during the day seemed calmer, comparing the two of course.
This is where Seventh Avenue meets Broadway Bohemian causing the light show we can see with the ads to musicals, concerts, TV series or advertising fashion brands, drinks, etc. ..

A publicidade é tanta que nem chegas ver os prédios que as suportam mas aqui para além de várias lojas como por exemplo a da Disney e da Toys R’Us está o quiosque de venda de bilhetes do tkds onde podes comprar bilhetes para um espectáculo de Broadway que na parte superior tem os degraus que te permitem sentar a aproveitar a vista para a zona, ou o NASDAQ uma das maiores bolsas de valores do mundo. Um pouco mais á frente duas lojas concorrentes disputam a gula dos que ali passam, uma é a M&Ms World e a outra é a Hershey’s.
Fechámos com chave de ouro o nosso primeiro dia em Nova Iorque porque fazendo um balanço da nossa visita, acho que não seria a mesma se não tivéssemos passado por aqui, não é o nosso lugar favorito da cidade mas é onde a ficção e a realidade se encontram para mim.
 
Advertising is such that you don’t actually see the buildings that support them but here in addition to several stores such as Disney and Toys R’Us there is the kiosk selling tickets of tkds where you can buy tickets to a Broadway show that on the top has the steps that allow you to sit back to enjoy the views of the area, or the NASDAQ building one of the largest exchanges markets in the world. Slightly further ahead two competing shops fight for the gluttony of those passing by, one is the m&m’s World and the other is the Hershey’s.
We closed with a golden key our first day in New York because taking looking back at our visit, I think it would not be the same if we had not been here, is not our favorite place in town but it’s where fiction and reality meet for me.

PAN DE LUJO – MADRID, ESPANHA

Instalado numa antiga padaria, o Pan de Lujo foi um projecto do famoso cozinheiro Alberto Chicote que passou agora para o chef Mariano Barrero que colaborava com ele noutro restaurante. Isto permitiu garantir a continuidade de um dos restaurantes da moda em Madrid que conheceu o seu auge em 2010 quando recebeu o prémio da revista do El Mundo para o Melhor Restaurante do Ano.
Housed in a former bakery, Pan de Lujo was a project of the famous chef Alberto Chicote that has now gone to the chef Mariano Barrero who collaborated with him in another restaurant. This ensured the continuity of one of the most trendy restaurants in Madrid that was in its peak in 2010 when he received the prize of the magazine of the El Mundo newspaper for Best Restaurant of the Year.

O seu nome é Cuatro Torres Business Area ou CTBA, normalmente chamamos as Torres. São os edificios mais altos de Espanha e podemos vê-los desde uma distância considerável como por exemplo desde algum miradouro da Serra de Guadarrama (dist. 70Km). Inspirados pela nossa viagem a Nova Iorque decidimos ir conhecer estas torres por fora e aproveitámos que o Domingo é um dia mais tranquilo para o fazer.
It’s name is Cuatro Torres Business Area or CTBA, usually called the Towers. Are the highest buildings in Spain and we can see them from a considerable distance like for example from the Guadarrama mountain (dist. 70Km(. Inspired by our trip to New York we decided to go and check out these towers we did it on a Sunday that is a quieter day to do it.

Pedimos uma recomendação de restaurante a uns amigos espanhóis, o briefing foi claro: queríamos comer um bom “chuletón” a um preço razoável. Foi assim que conhecemos o assador do Alto del León e já está na lista dos favoritos.  O primeiro ponto a favor é sem dúvida a sua vista da Serra e de Madrid, conseguimos ver até as Quatro Torres na zona norte da Castellana.
 
We asked for a recommendation for a restaurant to our Spanish friends, the briefing was clear: we wanted to eat a good “chuletón“ at a reasonable price. That is how we got to the Asador of Alto del Leon and is already on the list of favorites. The first point in it’s favor is undoubtedly its views of the Sierra and Madrid, we could even see the Four Towers in the north of Castellana.

 
Pedimos uma salada com bonito para partilhar e um prato de enchidos com queijo que devorámos esquecendo-nos que tínhamos pedido mais qualquer coisa. A seguir veio a carne, pedimos entrecot e o “chuletón de buey” (19€). Foi das melhores que já comi na zona de Madrid e a um preço razoável, bem cozinhada, tenra e saborosa tudo o que procurávamos.
Houve ainda espaço para sobremesas, tarte de queijo e o pudim flan. Os preços rondam os 25-30€ por pessoa o que justifica a qualidade da carne que comemos. Experiência a repetir sem dúvida.
 
We ordered a salad with “bonito” to share and a plate of sausage and cheese  we devoured it forgetting that we had ordered something else. Next came the meat, we ordered entrecot and the “chuletón de Buey“ (19 €). It was the best I have ever eaten in the Madrid area and a reasonable price, well-cooked, tender and tasty it was everything we were looking for.
There was still room for desserts, cheesecake and flan pudding. Prices are around 25-30€ per person which explains the quality of the meat we eat. An experience to repeat definitely.

O nosso primeiro piquenique em Madrid foi no Domingo passado e para celebrar o meu aniversario. Escolhemos Las Dehesas de Cercedilla pela sua proximidade a nossa casa (fica a uns 40 minutos) além de ter uma área recreativa bastante bem cuidada e organizada.
Com uma floresta densa composta essencialmente por pinheiros foi o lugar ideal para passar o dia com os miúdos que podiam disfrutar da natureza.
 
Our first picnic was in Madrid last Sunday and to celebrate my birthday. We chose Las Dehesas Cercedilla for its proximity to our house (located some 40 minutes) in addition to having a very well cared and organized recreational area.
With a dense forest composed mainly of pine was the ideal place to spend the day with kids could enjoy the nature.

Tem vários parques de estacionamento e normalmente junto a um está uma zona com mesas de piqueniques ou um prado onde podes colocar a toalha e comer no chão. Mas para os que procuram outro tipo de actividades, uma das principais é o “senderismo” com caminhos com vários níveis técnicos um deles passa pela Calçada Romana de Fuenfria. Há uma piscina que abre no Verão e um parque de aventura onde se pode fazer slide.
 
Has several parking lots and usually adjacent to a picnic area with tables and a meadow where you can put the towel on the floor and eat. But for those seeking other types of activities, one of the main ones is “trekking“ with paths with various technical levels one passes by a Roman road of Fuenfria. There is a pool that opens in the summer and an adventure park where one can do slide.

A nossa primeira refeição em Nova Iorque foi aqui na Brooklyn Bagel & Coffee Company, eram umas seis da tarde hora local e já bastante tarde para nós, foi um lanche que parecia um jantar. Tinha já um ponto a favor e era a sua proximidade ao apartamento que alugámos na West 29th Street, depois quando entrámos vi uma vitrine grande com uma variedade impressionante de bagels, nem sabia que podia haver tantas e ao lado está uma outra com todos os tipos de recheios a escolher.
 
Our first meal in NYC was here in Brooklyn Bagel & Coffee Company, it was around 6pm local time and rather late for us, although it was a snack it looked like a dinner. Had a point in favor and was its proximity to the apartment that we rented on West 29th Street, then when we entered I saw a great store window with an impressive array of bagels, didn’t even knew there could be so many, and next to it there is another with all kinds of fillings to choose from.

Eu escolhi o de alho recheado com queijo creme e cebolinho. A primeira coisa é o tamanho mesmo pedindo o pequeno o bagel que comi era bastante grande e podia ser uma refeição completa. Pedi para tostar um pouco e ficou ainda melhor com os pedacinhos de alho tostado, estava tão bom que elevou a fasquia já que era o nosso primeiro bagel em Nova Iorque e tudo o que viesse depois tinha que bater este. Custou $2,40, o bagel custava $1-$1,20 e depois o recheio pagas á parte.
 
I chose the garlic stuffed with cream cheese and chives. The first thing is the size even when you order the little bagel the one I ate was quite large and could be a complete meal. I asked to bake a bit and got better with the pieces of toasted garlic was so good that raised the bar since it was our first bagel in New York and all that came after had to beat this. Costs $ 2.40, the bagel is $ 1 – $ 1.20 and the filling has a separate price.

Esta rua é tão mítica que quando cheguei fiquei a pensar porquê tanta fama. Não é tanto pelo seu tamanho, pelo encanto dos edificios e nem sequer vês tantos homens de negócios a passar por ali mas sabes que estás perto da New York Stock Exchange e sabes que sem dar-te conta, milhões de dólares estão a ser transacionados ali dentro entre computadores, números e papéis enquanto a rua em si está tranquila.
This street is so mythical that when I got there I wondered why it is so famous. Not so much by its size, by the charm of the buildings you see and there is not many businessmen going around but you know you’re near the New York Stock Exchange and know that without even noticing, millions of dollars are being transacted there in between computers, numbers and paper while the street itself is quiet.

O real nome é o Charging Bull mas é muito conhecido como the Wall Street bull é quase motivo de romaria e local onde tens que tirar uma fotografia sim ou sim.  Talvez por isso seja realmente dificil apreciá-lo por entre a multidão que o rodeia cada um a tentar tirar a foto mais original ainda assim não deixa de ser um símbolo que queres conhecer e fazer um tracinho na tua lista. 
Esta escultura de bronze criada por Arturo di Modica não está realmente na rua Wall Street mas sim no Bowling Green park que fica ali perto.
It’s real name is the Charging Bull but is widely known as the Wall Street bull is almost cause for pilgrimage and you have to take a picture close to him no matter what. Maybe that’s why it is really hard to enjoy it through the crowd that surrounds each trying to take the most original photo still does not cease to be a symbol you want to know and make a dash on your list. 
This bronze sculpture by Arturo Di Modica created is not actually on Wall street but in Bowling Green park which is nearby.

Foi criada após a Black Monday, um dia que os mercados viveram uma queda de mais de 20% das empresas cotadas na bolsa de Nova Iorque, estávamos em 1987. A intenção do artista foi criar um símbolo de esperança e da força do povo norte-americano para superar mais uma crise financeira.
Dois anos depois da Segunda-feira negra foi colocada na Broad Street em frente ao edificio da Bolsa de Nova Iorque mas sem a autorização oficial da cidade, foi ideia de Arturo. O efeito surpresa fez com que o Touro se tornasse um êxito imediato mas teve que mudar a sua localização para o Bowling Green park onde continua a ter sucesso.
It was created after Black Monday, the day that the markets saw a decline of more than 20% of companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange, the year was 1987. The artist’s intention was to create a symbol of hope and strength of the American people, to surpass another financial crisis. 
Two years after Black Monday it was placed on Broad Street in front of the building of the New York Stock Exchange but without the official permission of the city, it was the brainchild of Arturo. The surprise effect has made the Bull became an immediate success but had to change its location to Bowling Green park where it remains a hit.
