Andávamos ás voltas com o mapa e com o GPS, tudo indicava que estávamos perto do Begijnhof mas o que víamos não parecia ser o que procurávamos até que começámos a ver que de um edificio de tijolo entrava e saía muita gente, aproximei-me e dizia Begijnhof. Passámos a porta com a sensação de que estávamos a entrar num jardim secreto, esperava mais tranquilidade mas ali celebrava-se um casamento.
 
We were walking around with the map and GPS, it appeared that we were near the Begijnhof but what we saw did not seem to be what we were looking for until we started to see people coming in and out from a brick building, I approached and it said Begijnhof. We passed the door with the feeling that we were entering a secret garden, I hoped it would be more quiet but there was a wedding being celebrated there.

O Begijnhof é um conjunto de casas com a arquitectura típica da cidade onde vivia um grupo de mulheres religiosas conhecidas por Beguinas, funcionava como um convento mas estas religiosas não tinham feito os votos. 
Foi construido na época medieval (séc. XIV) e uma da suas casas mais antigas é também uma das poucas em madeira que existe na cidade, Houten Huys ou a Casa de Madeira.
Á entrada estava uma estátua de uma Beguina com o seu traje típico, a última morreu na década de 70. Passando a igreja inglesa que não pudémos visitar por causa do casamento vemos um pátio com outra estátua, a de Jesús obra do escultor Johannes Petrus Maas.
Apesar de aberto ao público há partes onde não podemos entrar, são áreas exclusivas de residentes.
 
The Begijnhof is a group of houses with the town’s typical architecture where there a group of religious women known as Beguines lived, it worked as a convent but they had not made religious vows.
It was built in medieval times (XIV century) and one of their older homes is also one of the few wood that still exist in the city, it’s called Houten Huys or House of Wood.
At the entrance was a statue of a Beguine with his typical attire, the last died in the 70s. Passing the English church thay we weren’t able to visit because of the wedding we see a courtyard with another statue, of Jesús a work of sculptor Petrus Johannes Maas.
Although open to the public there are parts where we can not go in,they are exclusive areas for residents.

Quanto mais penso na escolha de hotel (e como foi uma opção cara) mais vejo que foi acertada porque estavámos ao lado do De Pijp, o animado bairro a que chamam “Quartier Latin”. Uma das suas ruas mais agitadas é a Albert Cuyp onde de segunda a sábado podemos visitar o seu mercado.
Dizem que o melhor dia para ir é o Sábado, há mais gente, mais agitação e também mais bancas, foi precisamente o dia que fomos e nem mesmo a chuva impedia que se fizesse a compra aqui.
 
The more I think about the choice of hotel (and it was an expensive option) I see that was more because we were right next to De Pijp, the lively neighborhood they call “Quartier Latin”. One of its busy streets is the Albert Cuyp Monday to Saturday where we can visit your market.
They say the best day to go is Saturday, there are more people, more excitement and also more stalls, it was precisely the day we went and not even the rain made ​​it impossible to make a purchase here.

Neste mercado encontras de tudo um pouco, tem um parte de alimentação mas outra dedicada a roupa, sapatos, bijuteria, decoração e chegámos a encontrar bancadas com relógios que eram cópias baratas de marcas como a Breitling (assustador!).
Na parte da alimentação tens uma grande variedade de productos reflexo do bairro e do facto de viverem ali varias nacionalidades, podes encontrar frutos exóticos mas também o seu produto tradicional, como o queijo.
Adorámos as bancadas de peixe fresco e marisco, a bancada do frango assado em que o vendedor ia dizendo aos clientes para não terem medo de provar e oferecia uma coxa. E não podiam faltar as flores haviam várias que vendiam tulipas, rosas entre outras.
Gostava tanto que os senhores aqui do nosso bairro pusessem os olhos nisto, cada vez que vou ao mercado há três bancadas de frutas e verduras, tudo o resto é de roupa barata.
 
In this market you can find a little of everything, it has a part for food but another part dedicated to clothing, shoes, jewelry, home decor and we got to find benches with watches that were knockoffs of brands like Breitling (scary!).
In the food part they have a wide range of products reflecting the neighborhood and the fact that several nationalities live there, you can find exotic fruits but also its the more traditional products such as cheese.
We loved the stands of fresh fish and seafood, the rotisserie chicken stall in which the seller was telling clients not to be afraid to try and offered a thigh. And you couldn’t miss the flowers they had several stalls selling tulips, roses and others.
I would love for the people of our neighborhood to put their eyes on this, every time I go to the market there are three stands of fruits and vegetables, everything else is cheap clothing.

O nome foi muito bem escolhido, Small porque o sitio é pequeno e visto de fora não dás muito por ele. World porque tem comida internacional e porque (dizem que) os seus proprietários são Australianos e Catering porque foi essa a origem do negócio que mais tarde abriu as portas aqui neste pequeno cantinho no bairro Jordaan.
The name was well chosen, Small because the site is small and seen from the outside not much you give him. World because it has international food and because (some say) their owners are Australians and Catering because this was the origin of the business which later opened its doors here in this little corner of the Jordaan district.

NH Museum Quarter – Amsterdão, Holanda

Enquanto reservava hotel fiquei com a sensação de que todos tiveram a mesma ideia de ir a Amsterdão nesse fim de semana, tudo o que era bom e barato estava esgotado. Entrei depois no site do NH (do qual tenho o cartão NH World) e reservei um dos seus hotéis na bairro dos Museus. Não foi nada barato mas foi o que se conseguiu arranjar, no final revelou ser uma excelente escolha.
While booking the hotel I got the feeling that everyone had the same idea of ​​going to Amsterdam this weekend, everything that was good and cheap was already full. I got into the NH site (for which I have the NH World card) and booked one of their hotels in the Museums neighborhood. It was not cheap but it was what we could find and it turned out to be an excellent choice.

Este era o parque que gostava de ter á porta de casa. São quase 50 hectares de relvado, lagos, arvoredo abundante, parques infantis, arte entre outras actividades para aproveitar os dias de bom tempo. Estava bastante triste com a possibilidade de não poder andar por aqui, não parava de chover mas estranhamente ao final do dia já eram quase nove da noite, o sol apareceu já com pouca força mas a suficiente para pelo o parque ver gente a fazer jogging, a passear o cão, a andar de bicicleta, a beber uma cerveja no relvado cantando, etc..
 
I would love to have this park at my doorstep. It’s nearly 50 acres of lawns, lakes, abundant trees, playgrounds, art and other activities to enjoy the nice weather. I was pretty sad about the possibility of not being able to stroll along it, it would stop raining but strangely at the end of the day it was almost nine in the evening, the sun appeared with less strength but enough to see people at the park jogging, walking their dog, riding bikes, drinking beer on the grass while singing, etc. ..

Tudo começou em 1864 quando um grupo de cidadãos influentes juntou dinheiro para construir um parque para disfrutar de bons passeios. Nessa altura chamavam-lhe o Nieuwe Park mas o nome mudou quando se colocou a estátua do poeta Joost Van den Vondel dois anos depois da sua abertura em 1865.
Entre cafés, cinemas e outras infrasestruturas, destacaria o Openluchttheather (teatro ao ar livre) onde podemos ver concertos, bailados, peças de teatro, etc.. Funciona de Junho a Agosto e é de entrada livre. (Website: http://www.openluchttheater.nl/programma)
Conseguimos apanhar este concerto: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHwE25rD9EM do pianista Ivo Janssen acompanhado por quatro músicos que tocavam Marimbas, creio que foi a primeira vez na minha vida que vi algo do género e ainda mais gratuito.
Queríamos ter ido com mais tempo (e melhor meteorologia) para sentar na relva junto a um lago, fazer um piquenique ou ler um livro.

Não seria fácil explicar porque é que num fim de semana curto em Amsterdão este foi o único museu que visitámos, creio que este post ajudará a esclarecê-lo. Podíamos falar de uma paixão pela marca e pela sua cerveja, mas nem é das nossas favoritas ainda assim era um museu que queríamos ver, do meu ponto de vista porque me interessa conhecer melhor uma das marcas mais reconhecidas a nível mundial e para o marido, é uma forma de escapar ao museu tradicional e entrar num tema que goste. E se houvesse ao lado um de carros seria a cereja no topo do bolo.
It wouldn’t be easy to explain why in a short weekend in Amsterdam this was the only museum we visited. We could talk about a passion for the brand and for its beer, but for neither of us is our favorite still this was a museum we wanted to see, from my point of view because I am interested in knowing better one of the most recognized brands in the world and for my husband, is a way to escape the traditional museum and get a theme that he likes. And if there was next to it a car museum it would be the icing on the cake.

Na nossa visita a Amsterdão ficámos no hotel NH Museum Quarter que nos pediu uma fortuna pelo pequeno-almoço (20€ por pessoa), decidimos por isso ir á procura de um sitio para comer depois de ter visto vários cafés a caminho do hotel. Entrámos no primeiro que encontrámos e fizémos uma boa escolha, o Bakken Met Passie é um paraíso da pastelaria…tem tudo e com muito boa pinta!
On our visit to Amsterdam we were at the NH Museum Quarter we were asked a fortune for breakfast (20 € per person), so we decided to go looking for a place to eat after seeing several cafes on our way to the hotel. We entered the first one we found and we made a good choice, the Bakken Met Passie pastry is a paradise … and everything looked great!

Bremer Ratskeller – Bremen, Alemanha

Não é difícil encontrar o mítico Bremer Ratskeller, basta procurar os Músicos ou o edificio antigo da Câmara Municipal e encontramos este restaurante. Construído no século XV é na realidade uma adega que guardou durante anos alguns dos melhores vinhos da região e ainda hoje guarda uma pipa de Rüdesheim do século XVII.

Quando visitei Bremen pela primeira vez procurei esta rua e não a consegui encontrar. Foi de facto estranho uma vez que ficava na parte de trás do hotel onde estava hospedada mas como ia com mais gente que além disso estava ansiosa para ver os Músicos acabei por desistir da ideia de visitar a rua que aparece em primeiro lugar no Lonely Planet quando pesquisas os locais de interesse da cidade.
 
When I visited Bremen for the first time I looked for this street and could not find it. It was indeed strange as it was at the back of the hotel where I was staying but I was with people who were more eager to see the musicians than this so I gave up the idea of visiting the street that appears first in the Lonely Planet when you search for the sights of the city.

 
Mas á segunda foi de vez e consegui dar um passeio pela rua durante uma trégua que o mau tempo nos deu nesta última visita a Bremen. A Bottcherstrasse apesar do seu aspecto quase medieval foi na realidade construída no século XX. Foi o empresário Ludwig Roselius que encargou ao arquitecto Bernhard Hoetger criar uma rua que fosse um símbolo do país.
Na realidade visitar esta rua pode provocar uma mistura de sentimentos, se por um lado não deixa de ter o seu interesse por ser algo único na cidade por outro lado foi construída por um homem que partilhava dos mesmos ideais de Adolf Hitler (diz-se que a imagem dourada da entrada está dedicada a ele: “The Bringer of Light”) e todos sabemos como é que essa história acabou.
Ainda assim a Bottcherstrasse tenta ser alheia a tudo isso, tem algumas lojas interessantes e bares com esplanada para além de interessantes edificios como o Paula-Becker-Modersohn-Haus que é o primeiro museu dedicado a uma artista alemã e o Haus Atlantis.

DUOMO – PISA, ITÁLIA

O Duomo foi o primeiro monumento que visitámos dos três que podíamos ver em Pisa. Foi construído em duas fases, a primeira no século XI com ajuda do dinheiro que os seus habitantes acumularam dos saques que fizeram a Palermo. No século XII termina a sua construção mas no século XVI após um incêndio tiveram que reconstrui-la. Ainda assim e depois de ter sobrevivido ao tempo e ás guerras, podemos visitar gratuitamente uma Catedral que muitos colocam para segundo plano ao visitar Pisa mas que nós gostámos muito de conhecer.
The Duomo was the first monument we visited out of the three that we could see in Pisa. It was built in two phases, the first in the eleventh century with the help of the money that the inhabitants accumulated from the loots made in Palermo. In the twelfth century ends its construction but in the sixteenth century after a fire it had to be rebuilt. Still and having survived the time and wars, we can visit for free a Cathedral that many put into the background when visiting Pisa but we very much enjoyed the experience.
