Para quem vive em Madrid será uma da praças mais emblemáticas e talvez polémicas. No ano de 1808 e no dia 2 de Maio os madrilenhos iniciam a sua revolta contra a ocupação francesa dando origem á guerra peninsular.
Está no boémio bairro de Malasaña que tem também um história curiosa ligada á ocupação francesa já que o bairro recebeu esse nome pela morte de uma famosa costureira que se chamava Maria Malasaña, assassinada pelos franceses nesse mesmo dia com a desculpa de estaria armada e por isso pertencia á revolta.

Desde então o bairro e esta praça em particular têm muitas histórias para contar e na década de 1980, muitas delas não eram das melhores. Ali nasce a “movida” e também uma zona de drogas e decadência que lhe conferiu durante muito tempo uma personalidade mais dura. Hoje o bairro renasceu das cinzas, é um dos mais requisitados de Madrid e com ele a Plaza dos de Mayo, com as suas agradáveis esplanadas, parques infantis (são pequenos mas têm um em cada canto da praça) e este mercado o Dosde Market que se realiza aos Sábados.

Today the neighborhood is reborn from the ashes, is one of the busiest of Madrid and with it the Plaza de Mayo, with its pleasant terraces, playgrounds (they are small but they have one in each corner of the square) and this Dosde market that takes place on Saturdays.

 

Este mercado de Diseño que se realiza todos os Sábados (desde que o tempo ajude) tem como objectivo divulgar artistas independentes que têm aqui a oportunidade de vender as suas peças e alguns fazem workshops de DIY (Do It Yourself). Honestamente estava á espera de ver mais bancadas mas ainda assim é um excelente esforço e parece-me bem localizado. Ainda comprei um fio numa bancada que por sinal era de uma portuguesa.
Ao centro da praça está um monumento com a estátua de Daoíz e Velarde, oficiais de artilharia no Quartel de Monteleón que estaria por esta zona e cuja porta está representada por trás.
Á volta bares e restaurantes com esplanadas ajudam a animar a praça que de noite ganha outra vida e talvez não seja “movida” de antigamente mas é certamente um dos sitios preferidos de quem vive na zona para sair.
 
Diseño this market which takes place every Saturday (since time helps) aims to disseminate independent artists here have the opportunity to sell their parts and do some workshops for DIY (Do It Yourself). I was honestly waiting to see more stalls but it’s still a great effort and it seems well placed. Even bought a necklace in a stand which by the way was from a Portuguese.

At the center of the square is a monument with the statue of Daoiz and Velarde, artillery officers in the Monteléon barracks that was around this area and whose gate is represented behind.
Around bars and restaurants with terraces help to liven up the square that by night gains another life may not be has “movida“ as from the past but it is certainly one of the favorite places of those who live in the area to go out.

É o nosso segundo ano a visitar o principal Mercado de Natal de Madrid. O ano passado fizémo-lo de noite o que permitiu aproveitar as luzes de Natal que este ano são exactamente iguais, além disso fomos no inicio de Dezembro e estava mais vazio. Este Sábado estava cheio, demasiado até.
Sendo que o Natal é o tema aqui podemos encontrar de tudo um pouco desde a árvore,o musgo para o presépio, as figuras ou um já feito, decorações para a casa e para a árvore, etc..
 
It’s our second year visiting the main Christmas Market in Madrid. Last year we visited during the evening which allowed us to enjoy the Christmas lights that this year were exactly the same, besides we went in the beginning of December and it was less crowded. This saturday it was full.
Knowing that Christmas is the main theme what we can find here are things like the tree, the moss for the nativity set, the separate figures or a complete one, home decorations and for the tree, etc.. 

O que nos pareceu um grande êxito de vendas são os gorros do tema, há desde árvores e Pai Natal, lobos, renas, etc.. Quase todas as barraquinhas os vendem e pela a rua, as pessoas entram no espírito usando-os. 
Este ano voltou também o carrousel, exactamente o mesmo do ano passado e no mesmo local. Se a ideia é que seja uma tradição ir a este Mercado de Natal então não se deve mexer em receita vencedora.
Aproveitámos para comprar alguns enfeites de Natal, os preços são os que encontramos nos hipermercados por exemplo. Isto significa que não vamos encontrar autênticas pechinchas mas também não vamos pagar mais caro, temos mais variedade por onde escolher e para quem gosta de montar presépios há barraquinhas que são autênticas preciosidades (que por sinal eram as que estavam mais cheias de gente) vendendo peça a peça, juntam-se as que vendem musgo e está feito.
Uma coisa é certa, a Plaza Mayor é o melhor local para fazê-lo e não pelo seu tamanho, mas pelo o seu entorno.
 
What looked to us like a best-seller were the Christmas hats, from trees, to Santa Claus to wolfs and reindeers, etc.. Almost every stall sells them and people get into the Christmas spirit wearing them as they walk down the street.
They also had the carrosel this year and in the same spot. If the general idea is that coming here is a tradition than you cannot change a winning recipe.
We did buy some Christmas decorations, the prices were in line to the ones we found in the hypermarkets. This means we won’t find great bargains but we won’t pay more either, there is a lot of variety and who love setting up a great nativity set there are stalls with a lot of precious things (those were actually the ones packed with people) selling piece by piece and then you have those that sell the moss and it’s done.
One thing is certain, the Plaza Mayor is the best place to do it not just for it’s size but also for the mood it sets.

MERCADO SAN ANTÓN – MADRID, ESPANHA

Renascem os mercados em Madrid. Já lá vai o tempo onde os únicos sitios onde comprávamos frescos era no mercado ou no mini-mercado, hoje em dia junta-se á palavra o super e o hiper, o que reduziu o número de compradores também por menor competitividade dos preços. Mas nada pode substituir essa qualidade na hora de atender nem a qualidade dos seus produtos que dificilmente encontramos nas grandes superficies.
The markets are reborn in Madrid. Gone are the days where the only places where we bought fresh products was in the market, today we have to add the word super and hyper before market, which reduced the number of buyers also because of less competitive prices. But nothing can replace that quality time of the people that attend to you neither the quality of their products that is hard to findd in large supermarkets.

Depois do sucesso do Mercado de San Miguel, surge o Mercado de San Antón no bairro da Chueca no coração de Madrid. Com um conceito semelhante mas uma “logística” diferente, o mercado tem três pisos, sendo que o primeiro funciona como zona de mercado tradicional, o segundo piso é uma zona de bares temáticos com várias iguarias e o último tem este restaurante: La Cocina de San Antón.
 
After the success of the Mercado de San Miguel comes the Mercado de San Antón in the Chueca district in the heart of Madrid. With a similar concept but with different “logistics“, the market has three floors, the first of which works as a traditional market area, the second floor is a zone of themed bars with various delicacies and the last has this restaurant: La Cocina de San Antón.

Um espaço cuidado e com design moderno, tem bastante luz e uma excelente vista panorâmica para o resto do mercado. Sentámo-nos numa mesa a meio da sala mas para quem quer comer a dois, as suas mesas têm a vista da foto de baixo o que é excelente. Há também a possibilidade de escolher nos pisos inferiores o que queremos comer, ou seja escolher os ingredientes frescos e pedir para que se cozinhem no restaurante.
Nós optámos por escolher a carta normal e mais ainda como íamos com uma criança preferimos o restaurante ao burburinho da zona das “barras” onde se come de pé ou temos a sorte de encontrar um lugar para sentar. 
 
A space with a modern design, has enough light and great views of the rest of the market. We sat at a table in the middle of the room but for those who eat in couples, their tables have a view of the photo below which is excellent. There is also the ability to choose in the lower floors what to eat, this means choosing fresh ingredients and ask them to cook it in the restaurant.
We opted for choosing from the regular menu and because we went with a child we prefered the restaurant to the hubbub of area of the “bars“ where you eat standing up or we are lucky enough to find a place to sit.
 
Escolhemos um tempura de gambas, seguido de dois pratos: um “solomillo” com um molho que estava excelente e uma cebola caramelizada que deixa água na boca. O outro prato era um bacalhau com risotto de gambas, onde a estrela foi mesmo o bacalhau, o arroz não era mau mas já comemos melhor.
No final tivémos uma excelente refeição, não comemos muito porque queríamos provar algumas coisas. Para o pequeno foi uma “tortilla” e no final para os três pagámos 47€, sem vinho nem sobremesa porque queríamos reservar esse direito para o segundo piso onde de certeza estaria uma casa de “postres”.
 
We chose a tempura prawns, followed by two dishes: one “solomillo“ with a sauce that was excellent and a caramelized onion that brings water to your mouth. The other dish was a cod with prawn risotto, where the star was the cod, rice was not bad but I eat better.
In the end we had a great meal, we did not eat too much because we wanted to try some things. For the little one we ordered a “tortilla“ and the end to the three we paid 47€ without wine or dessert because we wanted to reserve this right to the second floor where certainty there would be a bench with “postres“.

Primeiro convém explicar que Majadahonda fica a uns 15 km do centro de Madrid, é um municipio com mais de 60 mil habitantes e uma boa alternativa para quem trabalha em Madrid mas não pode viver no centro, por preço e pelo tamanho das casas.
Mas é errado pensar que Majadahonda é um simples dormitório de Madrid, tem vida própria, tem bastante comércio e gente pelas ruas, todos os dias da semana.
Eu sempre tinha ouvido falar no seu mercado, é famoso e grande parte das pessoas que me recomendaram nem sequer vive em Majadahonda e ao fim de quase 8 ou 9 meses a levantar-me aos Sábados dizendo que ia ao mercado, hoje decidi cumprir com a minha palavra.
I should first explain that Majadahonda is about 15 km from central Madrid, is a municipality with more than 60 000 inhabitants and a good alternative for those who work in Madrid but can not live in the center, by price and by the size of houses.
But it is wrong to think that Majadahonda is a simple dorm of Madrid, has its own life, has enough trade and people in the streets every day of the week.
I had always Heard about this market, is famous and most people that recommend it don’t even live in Majadahonda and after almost 8 or 9 months getting up on Saturday saying I was going to the market, today decided to comply with the my word.

Estacionar é complicado, o ideal é deixar o carro longe e aproveitar o passeio a pé pelo centro. Entrando no mercado começa a azáfama, gritos dos vendedores, gente que se cruza nos corredores apertados e irregulares delimitados pelas bancas. O típico.

Vende-se de tudo um pouco aqui, desde verduras a frutas, passando por plantas de cultivo e flores (esperava ver mais bancas de flores mas só vi duas, uma tinha muitas de plástico), roupa de cama, bijuteria, candeeiros e abajours, mas as barracas de roupa de senhora estavam em maioria. Claramente o alvo do mercado são as senhoras que saiem pela manhã á procura das pechinchas.
Os vendedores gritam: “Venga guapa, tenemos los mejores vestidos del mercado.”

For sale a little of everything here, from vegetables to fruits, to crop plants and flowers (I expected to see more flower stalls but only saw two, one had a lot of plastic flowers), linens, jewelry, lamps and abajours, but the stalls of lady’s clothing were in the majority. Clearly the target market are the ladies coming out on the morning looking for bargains in it.
Vendors shout: “Venga guapa, Tenemos los mejores del vestidos del market.” (Come on pretty girl, we have the best dresses of the market)
Para mim a decepção foi não encontrar uma boa bancada de flores frescas, coisa que vemos noutros mercados com frequência. Estava mesmo com vontade de comprar umas para colorir a casa. Encontrei duas bancadas, uma vendia-as em vaso e outra vendia essencialmente as plásticas, eram bonitas mas não é a mesma coisa.
 
For me the disappointment was not finding a good stall of fresh flowers, something we see often in other markets. I was even willing to buy some to give some color to the house. I found two stalls, one was selling them in a pot and the other one sold essentially the plastic, they were beautiful but it is not the same thing.
Encontrei sim uma “pérola”, dois senhores com pinta de que tinham acabado de vir da sua hortinha e estavam ali a vender os seus produtos. Vendiam plantas para dar tomates cherry, normais, pepinos e até beringelas, tudo por 0,50€ o pé. Tinham também uns alhos com um aspecto tão bom que trouxe 3 por 1 euro e o carro ficou empestado com o seu cheiro o que é bom sinal.
 
I did find a “Pearl”, two gentlemen looking like they had just come from their farm and were there to sell their products. They sold plants to give cherry tomatoes, normal, cucumbers and also eggplants, all for € 0.50 a foot. They also had some garlic looking good, I brought 3 for 1 euro and the car was plagued with its smell which is good sign.
Passei o resto do mercado á procura de outras barraquinhas do género, que vendessem produtos da região, agricultura biológica, mas ou desconheço a dimensão do mercado ou não encontrei nenhuma. 
 
I spent the rest of the market stalls looking for other stalls like that one, which sell local produce, organic farming, but either I’m unaware of the size of the market or I found none. 
Fica uma última foto com a cesta cheia de saquinhos e a minha plantinha que se cuidarmos bem dará uns bons tomatinhos cherry e os tais alhos, bem carnudos e “cheirosos”. 
 
I leave with one last photo with the basket full of small bags and my little plant that I will take good care that will give us good cherry tomatoes and garlic, fleshy and “fragrant”.

Folheando os guias de viagem de França em quase todos recomendavam uma visita aos mercados das principais cidades, mas um dos que vi que mais recomendavam era este na Quai Saint-Antoine em Lyon. Esta capital da alta cozinha tem a sua base nestes mercados, os melhores “chefs” procuram ali os alimentos mais frescos para preparar os seus pratos mais elaborados, directamente do produtor.
Lyon é uma cidade fantástica não tenho dúvidas, mas para mim o seu principal encanto estava neste mercado e nas suas animadas ruas repletas de restaurantes que davam vontade de fazer um roteiro gastronómico que depois exigiria uma dieta rigorosa.
 
Leafing through travel guides of France in almost all it was recommended a visit to the markets of major cities, but one that I saw that was the most recommended was this Quai Saint–Antoine in Lyon. This capital of haute cuisine has its base in these markets, the best “chefs” seek there the freshest foods to prepare their dishes, directly from the producer.
Lyon is a fantastic city no doubt, but for me its main charm was this market and its lively streets filled with restaurants that made ​​you want to do a gastronomic tour which then require a strict diet.

Começámos o nosso percurso pela bancada das ostras, creio que será indispensável num mercado do género, mas o que gostei mais é que as pessoas escolhiam ali o marisco fresco e o café em frente preparava ou cozinhava ao gosto do cliente, as ostras por exemplo comem-se com sumo de um limão, vimos que para alguns dos trabalhadores do mercado, esse era o seu almoço.

Outro ingrediente indispensável é o queijo, aqui dava vontade de perder a cabeça e comprar um pouco de todos, mas como a nossa viagem era de carro e ainda íamos demorar a chegar a casa tivémos medo que algo pudesse estragar a sua qualidade.

As frutas e as verduras tinham uma apresentação impecável, vi por lá legumes que nunca tinha visto ou utilizado na minha vida. Depois haviam barraquinhas que vendiam bolos, frangos assados e até uma de tapas. Numa delas comprámos um bolinhos que pareciam uns scones mas eram salgados, foram o nosso almoço enquanto tentávamos ganhar tempo e terreno viajando de carro em direcção á próxima cidade a visitar.

In one of them we bought cookies that looked like a savory scones but they were our lunch while trying to gain time and ground traveling by car in direction to the next town to visit.

Por último, não podia deixar de falar das plantas e flores, se a fruta e os legumes já dão cor ao mercado, as flores então enchem-no de alegria. Tal como os queijos eu tinha vontade de comprar flores mas enfim…

Um pouco pelas ruas víamos os que iam e vinham do mercado com as suas cestas de verga, uns iam a pé outros de bicicleta. Eram a imagem típica que temos da vida numa cidade francesa, um rio, um mercado de produtos frescos, bicicletas e também me lembra um pouco Itália. Depois de visitar este mercado vou sem dúvida visitar o da minha terra, não apenas para comprar o mais fresco mas porque caminhar por eles é uma das experiências mais autênticas que se pode ter numa cidade.
 
On the streets we saw those who were coming and going of the market with their wicker baskets, some others would walk others by Bike. They were the typical image we have of life in a French city, a river, the fresh produce market, bicycles and also reminded me a Little of Italy. After visiting this market I will undoubtedly visit one in my homeland, not only to buy the freshest but because they are one of the most authentic experiences you can have in a city.

Esse fenómeno do bom gosto principalmente do gourmet, estava cheio a um Domingo ao final do dia. A reanimação de um espaço como este é de facto uma ideia espantosa e o que ajuda uma cidade a tornar-se cada vez melhor, no fundo tornaram um mercado onde outrora se vendia de tudo o que normalmente se vende nesses espaços e que normalmente são locais despidos de luxos, numa zona que mesmo antes de entrar, as luzes e o colorido no seu interior já nos pedem para conhecer melhor.

This phenomenon mainly of gourmet taste, was full on a Sunday at the end of the day. The resuscitation of a space like this is in fact an amazing idea that helps a city to become better and better, they transformed a market where once sold everything that normally one sells these spaces and places that are usually stripped of luxuries, into an area that even before entering, the colours and the lights ask us to go inside to know it better.

Hoje conhecemos a Cours Saleya, uma das mais atractivas e animadas zonas de Nice.
O motivo de tanta animação é o seu grande e colorido mercado, com legumes e frutas mas é também muito conhecido pelas beleza das suas flores. São muitas as bancas que as vendem, e outras vendem produtos da região de reconhecida qualidade e certificados. Pelos estreitos corredores, as pessoas caminham calmamente apreciando o que ali se vende.

Eu parei durante algum tempo perto de uma banca de doces muito apelativa, era um mercado dentro do mercado com frutas e legumes, tudo muito “fresquinho” mas acima de tudo, muito doce.
Esta foi sem dúvida uma das minhas zonas preferidas de Nice, não só pelo seu mercado e pela agitação de pessoas mas também pelos seus edificios igualmente coloridos, ruelas com charme e restaurantes com esplanadas que convidam a ficar muito tempo a aproveitar o sol e boa comida.
