Numa competição das igrejas mais bizarras da Europa esta seguramente estaria no Top 10. Quando a vês da praça com o mesmo nome pensas que não está terminada que só fizeram a fachada e aos poucos enquanto andas vai revelando a sua forma. Dizem que é de inspiração Portuguesa e é um dos monumentos que marca o Caminho Português para Santiago que passa mesmo no coração de Pontevedra.
 
In a bizarre competition ofchurches of Europe this surely would be in the Top 10. When you see it from the square with the same name you think it might not be finished that they only did the façade and slowly as you walk will reveal its shape. They say it’s of portuguese inspiration and it is one of the monuments that marks the Portuguese Camino to Santiago that goes through the very heart of Pontevedra.

É também conhecida por Capela ou Santuário da Virgem Peregrina ou Virxen Peregrina em galego. Foi construída no século XVIII nos estilos barroco e neo-clássico e no seu interior está a figura da Virgem Peregrina ou do Caminho num altar ao centro.
Não é muito grande e não tem grandes decorações mas o seu significado para os peregrines trascende tudo isto, foi a partir deste ponto que começámos a percorrer Pontevedra seguindo o trilho do Caminho Português.
A entrada é livre.
 
It is also known as Chapel or Shrine of the Virgin Peregrina or Virxen Peregrina in Galician. It was built in the eighteenth century with a baroque and neo-classical  style and inside there’s the figure of the Virgin of the Pilgrim or the Camino in the center altar.
Not too big and without great decorations but its significance for the pilgrims transcends all this, it was from this point that we started to visit Pontevedra following the trail of the Portuguese Camino.
Admission is free.

Depois de ler um artigo sobre a oferta de tapas em Pontevedra na revista espanhola DeViajes tínhamos claro que queríamos comer na Plaza de la Leña ou muito perto. Tínhamos algumas referências mas todos estavam muito cheios e assim viémos dar ao Loaira. O espaço é simpático, pequeno e com uma sala no piso superior para além do mesas fora em plena praça.
After reading an article about “tapas” in Pontevedra in a Spanish magazine called DeViajes we had it clear that we wanted to eat at the Plaza de la Leña or very close. We had some references but all were very full and so we come to the Loaira. The space is nice, small and with a room upstairs in addition to the tables outside in the middle of the square.

Aparece sempre em todos os guias ou artigos de revista sobre Pontevedra e quando chegas percebes porquê. É pequena e durante o dia parece uma típica praça de aldeia pequena que acaba por encaixar bem no espírito do casco antigo da cidade.

Onde antigamente estava um mercado de lenha hoje estão casas em granito de estilo medieval bem conservadas e por baixo das suas pequenas arcadas estão restaurantes e bares que oferecem o melhor da gastronomia da região. Pequena mas relevante, mais tranquila pela manhã vai animando ao longo do dia com as suas pequenas esplanadas e á noite torna-se ainda mais acolhedora.

It always appears on all the travel guides or magazine articles about Pontevedra and when you arrive you understand why. It is small and during the day looks like a typical small village square which ultimately fits well in the spirit of the old part of town.
Where once was a market for firewood today there are the granite houses of medieval style well preserved and beneath its arches are small restaurants and bars offering the best food in the region. Small but significant, quieter in the morning but it grows throughout the day with it’s small terraces and at night becomes even more welcoming.

É uma das mais emblemáticas praças de Madrid cujo nome lembra uma batalha em Callao na costa peruana. São igualmente emblemáticos alguns dos edificios que a rodeia como o Edificio Carrión cujo reclamo luminoso da Schweppes é um dos símbolos da cidade, assim como o Cine Callao e o Palácio de la Prensa que está do outro lado da Gran Via.

It is one of the most emblematic squares of Madrid whose name recalls the battle in Callao on the Peruvian coast. There is also some of the iconic buildings surrounding it as the Edificio Carrión whose luminous advertising for Schweppes is one of the symbols of the city, as well as the Cine Callao and the Palacio de la Prensa that is on the other side of Gran Via.
Uma das melhores alturas para visitar esta praça é sem dúvida no Natal e se possível de noite para ver a sua árvore de Natal iluminada juntar-se ao habitual jogo de luzes nocturno que vem dos painéis que anunciam os filmes no edificio Callao e os neons da publicidade á volta. Além disso, todos os anos se monta aqui um ringue de patinagem no gelo e 2012 não foi excepção (apesar da crise), numa iniciativa em que se juntaram o grupo El Corte Inglés e a Mini.
Também nesta praça o edificio onde hoje funciona a Fnac foi anteriormente de um concorrente do El Corte Inglés, as Galerias Preciados.
 
One of the best times to visit this square is undoubtedly at Christmas and if possible at night to see their Christmas tree lit joining the usual game of the night lights coming from the panels that advertise movies in the building of Callao and neons signs. Moreover, every year there is a ice skating rink and 2012 was no exception (despite the crisis), an initiative that joined the group El Corte Inglés and Mini.
Also on the square the building where today Fnac has it’s megastore was previously a competitor of El Corte Inglés, Galerias Preciados.

Este Museu é já um dos meus preferidos de Madrid, aqui não vamos encontrar o Guernica é certo nem os quadros de Velásquez mas sim a luxuosa casa do Marquês de Cerralbo e todos os objectos que fizeram parte da sua vida. O Palácio onde viviam foi construído no final do século XIX e está localizado no bairro de Arguelles muito próximo da Plaza de España.
A entrada custa 3€ e oferece uma viagem no tempo que nos permite imaginar como vivia esta familia onde o luxo, opulência e o gosto pela arte faz com que hoje este Museu seja um dos retratos mais fiéis daquela época.
This Museum is now one of my favorites of Madrid, here we won’t find the Guernica or the paintings of Velasquez but the luxurious home of the Marquis of Cerralbo and all objects that were part of his life. The palace where they lived was built in the late nineteenth century and is located in the Arguelles neighborhood very close to the Plaza de España.
Admission is 3€ and offers a trip back in time that allows us to imagine how this family used to live and where luxury, opulence and taste for art makes this museum one of the most faithful portraits of that time.

Um colega de trabalho recomendou-me este restaurante em Madrid e depois de ler sobre ele neste blog: MadridCoolBlog, decidimos ir experimentar este fim de semana. Fica muito bem localizado, está junto á Plaza Murillo entre o Museu do Prado e o Real Jardim Botânico.
Por todo o lado se pode ler que foi fundado em 1927 e está dedicado ao famoso pintor espanhol (do século XVII) com o mesmo nome.
 
A coworker recommended me this restaurant in Madrid and after reading about it in this blog: MadridCoolBlog, we decided to try it this weekend. It is very well located, it’s close to the Plaza Murillo between the Prado Museum and the Royal Botanic Gardens.
Everywhere one can read that was founded in 1927 and is dedicated to the famous Spanish painter (seventeenth century) with the same name.

Para ir de compras a Londres sem sair de Madrid, a Beefeater recria todos os anos um mercado de Natal e esta edição de 2012 está a decorrer este fim de semana na Galeria de Cristal do Palácio de Cibeles.
“Há uma Londres para cada um de nós e a Beefeater convida-te a descubrir a tua” – este é o mote do mercado promovido pela famosa marca de Gin, a bebida da moda tanto em Madrid como em Lisboa.
 
To go shopping in London without living Madrid, Beefeater recreates recreates every year a Christmas market and this 2012 edition is taking place this weekend at Gallery Crystal Palace Cibeles.

Para recrear o ambiente da cidade e dos seus mercados mais conhecidos como Camden ou Portobello, trouxeram os próprios comerciantes que ocupam mais de 20 postos e onde podemos encontrar de tudo um pouco desde roupa vintage, acessórios, arte, música, acessórios para animais, lomography, etc.. Para quem não sabe o que oferecer neste Natal e procura ideias originais este seria o mercado a visitar.
Além disso há também um barbeiro e numa das barracas pode-se fazer tatuagens.
Logo á entrada está uma árvore de Natal e um ringue de patinagem que não sendo muito grande já dará para praticar. A sua utilização está incluída no preço.

Para quem tem sede e fome, o mercado conta com um bar de Gin claro está e a entrada normal custa 5€ mas por 7€ inclui uma bebida. A Happy Days (uma loja que com porta aberta na Malasaña) vende bagels (com muito boa pinta devo dizer) e cupcakes para não deixar o gin cair em estômago vazio.

A Rainha Isabel II foi a grande promotora da renovação desta praça também pela inauguração do Teatro Real em 1850. Esse edificio é sem dúvida a principal atracção da praça onde séculos antes funcionavam os balneários públicos.
Em frente ao Teatro está uma estátua de Isabel II feita por José Piquer y Duar.
 
Queen Elizabeth II was the great promoter of the renewal of this square also the inauguration of the Teatro Real in 1850. This building is undoubtedly the main attraction of the square where centuries ago they had the public baths.

Para além do Teatro Real está também o Real Cinema, inaugurado em 1920 era uma das maiores salas de cinema do país e hoje funciona como teatro.
Há sua volta alguns restaurantes com esplanada, por exemplo o De Maria que pertence a uma cadeia de restaurantes argentinos tendo a “parrilla” como especialidade ou a Taberna Real, um clássico da praça.

Besides the Theatre Royal there is also Royal Cinema, opened in 1920 was one of the biggest movie theathers in the country and today it’s used as theater.

Construída no final do século XVIII tornou-se rápidamente num dos símbolos da cidade e faz parte do seu trajecto turístico. Está junto ao parque do Retiro e ao bairro de Salamanca. Uma rua com o mesmo nome passa pela Plaza da Independência onde está a porta e vai até Cibeles.

Built in the late eighteenth century quickly became one of the symbols of the city and is part of it’s tourist route. It’s close the Retiro park and the neighborhood of Salamanca. A street with the same name involves the Independence Plaza where the door is and goes to Cibeles.




Mais uma obra atribuída a Sabatini que recebeu ordens do Rei Carlos III para construir uma porta no lugar de outra mais pequena. O nome refere-se a Alcalá de Henares cuja ligação a Madrid fazia-se por uma estrada que passava por esta zona, D. Carlos III queria uma porta monumental para os que entravam na cidade por ali.
Talvez não seja tão conhecida como o Arco de Triunfo ou a Porta de Bradenburgo mas foi construída antes das anteriores.
 
Another work attributed to Sabatini who received orders from King Carlos III to build a port in place of a smaller one. The name refers to Alcalá de Henares that is connected to Madrid through a road that was in this same area, D. Carlos III wanted a monumental door for those entering the city.

A fachada promete algo de típico e o interior confirma. A Cava de Illan serve comida típica madrilenha, um clássico numa Cava Baja que está a mudar para conceitos de tapas e pinchos mais modernos mas este parou no tempo, parou em 1988 ano em que foi fundado.
 
The facade promises something typical it’s interior confirms it. The Cava de Illan serves typical Madrilenian food, a classic in Cava Baja that is changing tapas and pinchos  to a more modern concept but this one stopped in time, stopped in 1988 the year it was founded.


Entramos para uma sala pequena, com uma “barra” (balcão) igualmente pequena e poucas mesas. Há outra sala onde funciona o restaurante mas esta primeira é onde podes petiscar. Não diria que é particularmente acolhedor mas tem detalhes que se apreciam como as serigrafias de Madrid antiga nas mesas.

Pedimos algumas tapas, decidimos não pedir o presunto que ali, e como manda a tradição, é cortado bem fininho e na hora. Optámos pelas “rabas de calamares” (choco panado), pelas tradicionais “croquetas de jamón” (também tinham de bacalhau), pedimos uns chouriços feitos em vinho e cometemos o erro de pedir os “huevos rotos” (ovos estrelados com presunto e batata frita), não porque estivesse maus mas porque já não havia espaço para mais comida.
As tapas rondavam os 8-9 euros o prato e eram bem generosas, a comida estava óptima e foi uma agradável surpresa. As “croquetas” foram das melhores que comi mas não sou especialista, o seu segredo está na massa estaladiça e saborosa que as envolve. O choco estava óptimo e até considerámos pedir outra em vez dos ovos.
No final pagámos quase 50€ para três (ou melhor dois e meio) e considerámos que podíamos ter pago menos porque um dos pratos de tapas era desnecessário, além disso as bebidas aqui são exageradamente caras, uma Coca-cola de 25cl custa 2,5€. Se pedes uma cerveja ou vinho colocam-te uma pequena tapa de cortesia.
É sem dúvida uma boa opção quando estás na Cava Baja e tudo o resto está cheio de gente.

The tapas were around 8-9 euros and were very generous, the food was great and it was a pleasant surprise. The “croquetas“ were the best I ate but I’m no expert, the secret is in the crispy and tasty dough that involves them. The cuttlefish was great and we even wanted to ask another instead of eggs.
In the end we paid almost 50 € for three (or rather two and a half) and we felt that we could have paid less because of the one “tapa” dish that was unnecessary, besides the drinks here are very expensive, a Coca–Cola 25cl costs 2,5 €. If order beer or wine they give you a complementary “tapa”.
It is certainly a good option when you’re in Cava Baja and everything else is crowded.
