Chegámos a Nimes quase de noite, vínhamos de Perpignan e estávamos algo cansados. Começámos com a ajuda do GPS a procurar hotéis no centro da cidade dentro da banda de preço que tínhamos definido (algo tipo Ibis). Batemos a várias portas e começámos a ficar assustados…estavam todos cheios. Foi aí que encontrámos o Royal Hotel, um dos poucos que tinha quartos (na realidade apenas um quarto) a um preço acessível.

Porta Augusta – Nîmes, França

Devo reconhecer que pelo seu mau estado e localização a importância desta porta quase passa despercebida. Fazia parte de uma muralha que rodeava a cidade de Nîmes e era uma das suas principais portas de entrada, hoje em dia só ficaram duas, esta e a Porta de França.

I must acknowledge that due to its poor state and location the importance of this door almost goes unnoticed. It was part of a wall that surrounded the city of Nîmes and was one of its main entrance doors, nowadays there are only two, this one and the Door of France.

É uma rua que vai desde a Place Louis Pradel até a Place de Bellecour, famosa por ser um dos “centros” comerciais da cidade Lyon. Para percorrê-la na totalidade seria um longo mas interessante trajecto nós fizémos a parte final que vai desde a Place de la Repúblique até a Bellecour.
Ainda que pequeno, foi sem dúvida interessante por alguns edificios que vimos. Um deles foi o de estilo Art Déco que alberga os dos cinemas Pathé. Estávamos acostumados a ver o símbolo do galo dourado no inicio dos filmes que não associávamos que tivessem salas de cinema próprias, aqui está a prova, para além de produtores são também distribuidores.

It is a street that goes from the Place Louis Pradel to Place Bellecour, famous for being one of the shopping “centre” of the city Lyon. To go through it in its entirety would be a long but interesting journey we made the final part that goes from the Place de la République to Bellecour.
Though small, it was certainly interesting for a few buildings we saw. One was the Art Deco style which houses the Pathé cinemas. We used to see the symbol of the golden rooster in the beginning of movies but we had not associated it with the cinemas themselves, here’s the proof, in addition to producers they are also distributors.

 
Outro dos edificios que nos despertou a atenção foi o da Fnac, apesar da sua fachada estar em obras pudémos ver as duas estátuas que enquadravam a entrada para a loja. Antes de ser uma loja da marca francesa foi a sede do jornal Le Progrès.
Entre lojas de várias marcas internacionais como a Zara, a Etam, podemos encontrar algumas marcas mais luxuosas como por exemplo a Heyroud (sapataria e marroquinaria).
 
Another of the buildings that caught our eye was the Fnac one, despite its facade was still in the works we were able to see the two statues that framed the entrance to the store. Before being a store of French Brand it was the headquarters of the newspaper Le Progres.
Between stores of various international brands like Zara, Etam, we can find some more luxurious brands such as Heyroud (shoe and leather goods).

Localizada na zona de Presqu’île, esta ampla praça teve antes do século XIX outro nome: Place Impériale. Rodeada de elegantes edificios, a praça tem ao centro uma fonte rectangular que segundo dizem tem repuxos que funcionam mas no dia em que fomos não vimos nenhum a funcionar. Numa das esquinas está o edificio do Hotel Carlton, um dos mais requintados da cidade.

 

Located in the Presqu’ile district, this large square had another name before the nineteenth century: Place Imperiale. Surrounded by elegant buildings, the square has a rectangular fountain in the center that they say it works but on the day that we were there haven’t seen any running. In one corner is the building of the Hotel Carlton, one of the finest in the city.

Jardins do Palais Royal – Paris, França

Situado a norte do Louvre, o Palácio Real é hoje a sede do Conselho de Estado mas desde da sua construção no século XVII que importantes figuras da história francesa passaram por ele nomeadamente o Cardeal Richelieu. Na realidade antes de ser o Palais-Royal foi o Palais-Cardinal.

Ao longo dos séculos teve várias utilizações, após a morte do Cardeal Richelieu foi a residência do jovem Luís XIV o futuro Rei de França. Mais tarde e na era Orleães foi palco de luxuosas festas e era um local de jogo, função que continuou a ter até ao século XIX quando se tornou na sede do Conselho de Estado. Numa parte do palácio está o Ministério da Cultura. 
Located north of the Louvre, the Royal Palace is now the seat of the Council of State but since it was built in the seventeenth century that important figures in French history were in itincluding Cardinal Richelieu. In fact prior to the Palais–Royal it was the Palais-Cardinal.
Over the centuries it had various uses, after the death of Cardinal Richelieu it was the residence of the young future King Louis XIV of France. Later in the Orleans era was the stage of luxurious parties and a gambling site, which continued to work until the nineteenth century when it became the seat of the Council of State. In one part of the palace is the Ministry of Culture.

Place des Victoires – Paris, França

No nosso passeio de bicicleta por Paris passámos por esta praça circular rodeada de elegantes edificios e ao centro vimos uma estátua equestre que mais tarde percebemos ser do Rei Luís IV, o famoso Rei Sol.
O actual monumento ao monarca foi construído em 1828, mas o original que era do século XVII que foi construído juntamente com a praça e os seus edificios foi destruído durante a Revolução Francesa. Ao centro ergueram-se outros monumentos até que D. Carlos X ordenou a construção de uma estátua em honra ao famoso Rei Sol.
On our bike ride through Paris we passed by this circular plaza surrounded by elegant buildings and in the center we saw the equestrian statue that later we realized to be of King Louis IV, the famous Sun King
The current monument to the monarch was built in 1828, but the original was from the seventeenth century it was built along with the square and its buildings were destroyed during the French Revolution. In the center other monuments were placed here until D. Charles X ordered the construction of a statue in honor of the famous Sun King.

Monumento dos Girondinos – Bordéus, França

Localizado na Praça de Quinconces, o monumento em memória dos girondinos é composto por uma coluna com uma escultura em bronze e duas grandes fontes aos seus pés. Os Girondinos eram um grupo político da época da Revolução Francesa e objectivo deste monumento é prestar homenagem aos políticos que foram perseguidos e executados durante a época do Reino do Terror.

Located in the Plaza de Quinconces, the monument in memory of the Girondins consists of a column with a bronze sculpture and two large fountains at its feet. The Girondins were a political group of the era of the French Revolution and purpose of this monument is to honor the politicians who were persecuted and executed during the time of the Reign of Terror.

Arco do Triunfo – Paris, França

Ao percorrer os Champs-Élysées começámos a ver um aparato de gente e polícia que nos pareceu fora do normal. Sim, estávamos perto do Arco do Triunfo mas que estaria para acontecer para causar tamanho burburinho?
Fomos na Páscoa (25 de Abril) e este tipo de cerimónia segundo tinha lido nos guias acontecia a 8 de Maio, data em que se celebra a vitória na II Guerra Mundial, o ritual é muito parecido há uma marcha lenta de militares liderada por veteranos de guerra que levam uma coroa de flores e colocam na campa do Soldado Desconhecido.
When walking through the Champs-Élysées we started to see a crowd of people and police that seemed out of the ordinary. Yes, we were near the Arc de Triomphe but what was going to cause a buzz that size?
We went in Easter (April 25) and such ceremony according to what I read in guidebooks happened on May 8, when they celebrate the victory in World War II, the ritual is very similar there is an idle led by war veteran taking a wreath to put on the grave of the Unknown Soldier.

Basílica de Sacre Coeur (topo) – Paris, França

Trezentos degraus separavam-nos da possibilidade de uma vista panorâmica de Paris. Apenas trezentos degraus. Depois de subir os da Sagrada Familia estes pareciam uma brincadeira, mas custam igual. O que não entendo nestas coisas é que se sou eu que os subo porque é que tenho que pagar para o fazer, entrar na Basílica é gratuito mas para subir á cúpula (pelos meus próprios pés) pago 5€.
Uma vez no topo percebemos porquê, a vista compensa e 5€ deixam de ser uma despesa mas um verdadeiro investimento. A vista sobre a cidade é magnífica e podemos ver tudo.

Three hundred steps separated us from the possibility of a panoramic view over Paris. Only three hundred steps. After climbing the Sagrada Familia these seemed like a joke, but it’s hard the same. What I do not understand in these things is that if I’m to climb it myself why I have to pay to do so, to get into the Basilica is free but to climb to the dome (by my own feet) I paid 5 €.
Once at the top we realized why, the view is compensanting and 5€ ceased being an expense but a true investment. The view over the city is magnificent and we can see everything.

Basílica de Sacre Coeur – Paris, França

Guardámos para o fim a visita á Basílica do Sagrado Coração que está no topo de Montmartre e dedicámos uma manhã a fazê-lo. Há muito mais para fazer que simplesmente visitá-la, todo o seu entorno convida a ficar um pouco mais, queremos sentar-nos na relva a comer uma sandes enquanto vemos as pessoas a passar, ou ficar a apreciar os originais artistas de rua que por ali andam.
We’ve saved for last a visit to the Sacre Coeur that is at the top of Montmartre and we devoted a morning to do so. There is much more to do than just visit it, all it’s surroundings invites you to stay a little longer, we wanted to sit down on the grass and eat a sandwich while watching people pass by, or appreciate the unique street performers that are there.
