Mais um Fevereiro que começa e mais uma festa de anos para a criança mais velha cá de casa. O ano passado decidimos fazê-la aqui mas este ano decidimos que não querendo mudar o formato também não queríamos pagar tanto. Recorremos a um “vizinho” que nos proporcionou condições muito parecidas e com o bónus de um dia com sol conseguimos fazer com que mais um aniversario fosse celebrado com êxito.
Another February that begins and another party for our eldest child from home. Last year we decided to do it here but this year we decided that not wanting to change the format also did not want to pay so much. Páteo do Petisco – Cascais, Portugal

Com a moda dos restaurantes de petiscos para os lados da capital, faltava em Cascais um sitio agradável onde comer bem e conviver com amigos á volta de clássicos como ovos com farinheira, moelas, morcela assada, lascas de batata, etc.. Faltava, já não falta. Agora há o Páteo dos Petisco que parece difícil de encontrar mas lá conseguimos descubri-lo muito próximo de Birre.
With the fashionable restaurants of “petiscos” (smaller portions of food like tapas) in the capital, Cascais was missing a nice place where one could eat well and hangout with friends around classics like eggs with sausage, “moelas”, roast black pudding, potato chips, etc. .. It was missing, but that was the past. Now there is the Páteo do Petisco that seems hard to find but we got there we discovered it very close to Birre.

O Eduardo das Conquilhas não é uma simples marisqueira é um exemplo de longevidade. Aproveitei para dar continuidade ao meu programa de emigrante para matar saudades de tudo aquilo que temos de genuíno no nosso país e uma das primeiras coisas na lista era comer Amêijoas á Bulhão Pato e Sapateira com o recheio aqui neste lugar.
Eduardo of Conquilhas is not a simple seafood joint it is an example of longevity. I took the opportunity to continue my emigrant program to try and experience once more everything that we have genuine in our country and one of the first things on the list was to eat Clams and Crab with the filling in this place.

Pode ser uma boa ideia conjugar num só dia uma visita á Feira do Artesanato do Estoril (FIARTIL) e as Festas do Mar na Baía de Cascais, podendo para ambas usar a linha de comboio saindo no Estoril para ver a primeira e depois em Cascais para um concerto gratuito á beira mar.
Este ano o evento celebra 50 anos da sua existencia, começou a 28 de Junho e termina a 1 de Setembro. Para entrar no recinto da feira os adultos têm que pagar 1€ (2,5€ se for ao fim de semana).
 
Might be a good idea to combine in a single day a visit to the Feira do Artesanato do Estoril(FIARTIL – Crafts Fair) and the Festival of the Sea in the Bay of Cascais, for both one can use the train line coming out in Estoril to see the first and then to Cascais for a free concert close to the sea.
This year’s event celebrates 50 years of its existence, it started on June 28 and will end on September 1st. To enter the fairgrounds adults have to pay € 1 (€ 2.5 if the weekend).

Uma vez lá dentro para além das habituais barraquinhas de artesanato, estão restaurantes onde a palavra “petisco” é a que mais se vê e está a Vantini – a carrinha pão de forma dos gelados da Santini. 
Nós jantámos na Tasquinha (que aparece na foto) mas não estavam no seu melhor momento, tivémos alguns problemas com o atendimento e com a comida ainda que a tábua de petiscos estava boa (sem ser de chorar por mais) e a mista de carne estava exemplar. O problema neste tipo de espaços que estão abertos a título temporário parece-me ser a organização e neste caso talvez a falta de condições para cozinhar.
Depois fizémos algumas compras como brinquedos em madeira para as crianças e duas molduras na bancada do Sete Ciganos e Doze Caracóis, o nome é original e o trabalho também. Lisboa está na moda e isso nota-se nas molduras, blocos de notas, quadros e postais que podemos ali ver á venda.
Pelo palco vão passar vários artistas, aos Domingos a organização promete noites de Jazz no dia em que fomos estava um rancho folclórico.  
 
Once inside besides the usual craft stalls, there were restaurants where the most used word is “petisco” (snack) and there is the Vantini – the vintage ice cream van of Santini.
We had dinner in the Tasquinha (the one you see in the photo) but they were not at their best, we had some problems with the service and the food even though the board of “petiscos” was good (not crying for more) and the mixed grilled meat was exemplary . The problem in this kind of spaces that are open temporarily is the organization and in this case perhaps the lack of conditions for cooking.
Afterwards we made some purchases, like wooden toys for children and two frames in the Sete Ciganos e Doze Caracóis (Seven Gypsies and Twelve Snails) bench, the name is unique and the work aswell. Lisbon is cool and it shows in the frames, notebooks, paintings and postcards that we see for sale there.
On the stage several artists will perform, on Sundays the organization promises jazz evenings and on the day we went it was a ranch folk group.

Começaram no dia 16 deste mês as Festas do Mar de Cascais em honra á Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes e que até dia 25 promete encher de gente a Baía de Cascais com concertos gratuitos, barraquinhas de comida e artesanato, fogo de artificio (se não for cancelado) e muito bom ambiente.
No dia da abertura que foi o único em que podíamos estar presentes, ouvimos Craig David cantar o “Walking away”, “Rise and Fall” e o “Fill Me In”.
 
On the 16th of this month the Festas do Mar in Cascais started in honor of Our Lady of Navigators and until the 25th promises to fill us Cascais Bay with free concerts, food stalls and crafts, fireworks (if not canceled ) and very good atmosphere.
On the opening day which was the only one that we could be present, we listened to Craig David sing “Walking Away,” “Rise and Fall“ and “Fill Me In“.

A julgar pela dificuldade para estacionar e depois chegar até a um ponto mais próximo do palco, este primeiro dia foi um êxito. Junto á Câmara Municipal estão vários postos que vendem comida e bebida, a oferta vai desde cachorros quentes, batatas fritas, leitão da bairrada, churros e farturas (se conseguirem aguentar as filas de espera), a carrinha de gelados da Santini, etc..
Ficámos até á meia-noite á espera do prometido fogo de artificio que foi cancelado pela organização, não consegui ouvir os motivos mas pela boa ventania que se fazia sentir em Cascais podemos adivinhar o porquê.
Tivémos pena de regressar a Madrid pelo concerto de Expensive Soul no dia 24 que vamos perder.
 
Judging by the difficulty to park our car and then get to a point closer to the stage, this first day was a success. Near the Town Hall there are several stations that sell food and drink, the offer goes from hot dogs, chips, Piglet from “Bairrada”, churros and fritters (if you can stand the queues), the ice cream truck of Santini, etc. ..
We were up at midnight waiting for the promised fireworks which was canceled by the organization, could not hear the reasons but by the good wind that was felt in Cascais we can guess why.
We were sorry that we had to return to Madrid because of the Expensive Soul concert on the 24th that we will not attend.

A primeira coisa que normalmente perguntam quando se vê este Hot Dog pela primeira vez é: “Como é que se come isto?”. Nós que levamos alguns tempos a comer os famosos Hot Dogs de Cascais, primeiro na carrinha que estava estacionada junto á praia, depois num centro comercial e agora na Av. Valbom, nunca conseguimos encontrar a melhor técnica. Decidimos que o importante é comer este fantástico cachorro quente completo (por pouco menos de 4€) sem ter medo de sujar a roupa ou de ter alguma foto no Facebook com a cara cheia daquele molho especial que o torna ainda melhor.

The first thing people usually ask when they see this Hot Dog first is: “How do I eat this?”. We took some time to eat the famous Hot Dogs Cascais, first in the van that was parked near the beach, then in a small shopping center and now on Avenida Valbom, yet we never managed to find the best technique. We decided that the important thing is to eat this fantastic hot dog complete (for just under € 4) without fear of having stains on your clothes or to have some picture on Facebook with a face full of that special sauce that makes it even better.

Depois de ter explorado o exterior do Palacio decidimos entrar. Em algum lugar tinha lido que se pagava para entrar mas não nos cobraram nada.
O Museu Condes de Castro de Guimarães está dentro do género de museus que me agradam como o Museu Cerralbo por exemplo, casas-museus que expõem as peças de mobiliário e arte coleccionada por quem ali viveu.
 
After having explored the exterior of the Palace we decided to enter. Somewhere I had read that you paid to get in but they didn’t charged anything.
The Museum Condes de Castro Guimarães is within the genre of museums that I like such as the Museo Cerralbo eg, house museums that exhibit the pieces of furniture and art by collected by who lived there. 

Os Condes de Castro Guimarães conseguiram uma notável colecção de peças portuguesas, italianas, flamengas, espanholas, francesas e ingleses. Esculturas, pinturas, peças únicas de mobiliário, peças que vieram da China e da India. Ourivesaria portuguesa, baixelas francesas e porcelana oriental animaram em tempos as mesas da sala de jantar do Palácio.
Logo á entrada os retratos dos seus proprietários e do lado esquerdo a fabulosa sala da Música onde ainda hoje se dão pequenos concertos. As paredes revestidas com azulejos, os tectos decorados com os brasões dos antepassados do Conde.
 
The Condes de Castro Guimarães achieved a remarkable collection of Portuguese, Italian, Flemish, Spanish, French and English items. Sculptures, paintings, unique pieces of furniture pieces that came from China and India. Portuguese jewellery, French and Oriental porcelain tableware enliven the tables in the dining room of the Palace.
Right at the entrance portraits of their owners and at the left the fabulous Music room where small concerts are still given. The walls are covered with tiles, ceilings decorated with the coats of arms of the ancestors of Earl.

A sala de Jantar tinha a mesa posta com porcelanas e baixelas de prata. A sua peça mais relevante é a fonte de inspiração árabe decorada com azulejos.
 
The room had a dinner table set with china and silverware. Its most important part is the fountain of Arab inspiration decorated with tiles.
 
 
Numa outra sala alguns artefactos que contam um pouco da história de quem viveu na zona do Estoril há mais de 5000 anos, muitas encontradas em lugares fúnebres.
 
In another room a few artifacts that tell a Little about the history of who lived in the Estoril area for over 5000 years, found in many funeral places.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
A última sala que vimos foi a de Armas que dava acesso ao Torreão. Nela para além de uma colecção de armas podemos contemplar os tectos decorados com os brasões dos antepassados de Jorge O’Neill, o primeiro proprietário do Palácio. Subimos depois umas pequenas escadas que dão acesso á Torre e vista para o mar.
 
The last room we saw was the Weapons that gave access to the Turret. In it beyond a collection of weapons we can contemplate the ceiling decorated with coats of arms of the ancestors of George O’Neill, the first owner of the Palace. We climbed after some small stairs that give access to the tower and overlooked the sea.

São várias as obras relevantes presentes na biblioteca do museu mas sem dúvida a mais valiosa é o manuscrito de Duarte Galvão, datado de 1505 e que conta a história de D. Afonso Henriques.
 
There are several relevant works in the library of the museum but arguably the most valuable is the manuscript of Duarte Galvão, dated 1505 and tells the story of D. Afonso Henriques.

Palácio Condes de Castro Guimarães – Cascais, Portugal

Este lugar marcou para sempre a minha infância, se houvesse alguma história de princesas era este o palácio que eu imaginava, era no topo de uma das suas janelas que a Julieta suspirava pelo Romeo. Era de conto de fadas.
Tive a sorte de o visitar várias vezes e numa das minhas últimas idas a Portugal voltei a fazê-lo. Construído no século XIX, está aberto ao público como museu onde podemos ver peças que pertenciam aos Condes para além de uma exposição sobre a pré-história em Cascais. Dividi o post em dois, o primeiro será sobre o Palácio e o segundo sobre o Museu.
This place has forever marked my childhood, if there was any princess story this was the palace I imagined, it was at the top of one of his windows that Juliet sighed for Romeo. It was a fairy tale.
I was fortunate to visit it several times and in one of my last trips to Portugal I did it again. Built in the nineteenth century, it is open to the public as a museum where you can see pieces that belonged to the Counts in addition to an exhibit of the prehistory era in Cascais. I split the post into two, the first will be on the Palace and the second about the Museum.

Sheraton Quinta da Marinha Hotel – Cascais, Portugal

NOTA: Quando visitámos este hotel o seu nome era Viva Marinha
Apesar de o colocar numa categoria de “sleep” a verdade é que nunca dormimos neste hotel e é a terceira vez que o visitamos. A primeira vez foi para uma reunião de equipa, a segunda para uma convenção da empresa onde me despedi de todos e parti para Madrid e a última foi no inicio deste mês em que decidi “alugar” um apartamento por um dia para fazer uma festa de aniversario. Foi uma excelente escolha e todos os que foram á festa adoraram a ideia.
 
Although placed in a category of “sleep” the truth is that we never slept in this hotel and it is the third time we visited. The first time was for a team meeting, the second with our company to a convention where I said goodbye to everyone and left for Madrid and the last was at the beginning of this month when I decided to “rent” an apartment for a day to make a birthday party . It was an excellent choice and all who have been to the party loved the idea.

Já não temos casa em Portugal, não queríamos utilizar a casa dos familiares porque queríamos convidar muita gente, não quisemos alugar um daqueles espaço de festas para crianças porque na realidade eram poucas e para irem avós e bisavós precisávamos de um espaço confortável e por isso não foi difícil escolher este hotel cujos apartamentos ficaram sempre na memoria. “Home away from home”, é sempre o que te “vendem” os hotéis e o Viva Marinha faz isso na perfeição.
Foi a melhor festa de anos que podíamos fazer a um miúdo de cinco anos, estava toda a familia e amigos com filhos, lá fora um pequeno jardim permitia que jogassem futebol e quando o frio apertou eu tinha jogos no espaçoso interior. A comida ficou por nossa conta, na televisão passávamos fotos desde que tinha nascido até hoje e nos sofás as pessoas estavam cómodas e entretidas.
É uma excelente opção para quem quer fazer uma festa e não tem casa para isso. A simpatia dos empregados e o facto de não se intrometerem em nada da festa, o facto de no fim a limpeza estar (felizmente) incluída na conta.
 
We no longer have a house in Portugal, we did not want to use any family house because we wanted to invite a lot of people and we did not want to rent a space for parties for children because there were actually few childrens and we had invinted grandparents and great-grandparents so we needed a comfortable space and therefore it was not difficult to choose this hotel whose rooms were always in my memory. “Home away from home” it’s always what the hotels “sell” to you and the Viva Marinha do it perfectly.
It was the best birthday party we could do to a five year old kid, with all the family and friends, outside a small garden allowed them to play football and when it got cold we had games in the spacious interior. The food was on our own, on the television we put some pictures from when he was born until today and people were comfortable and entertained in the sofas.
It is an excellent option for those who want to party and have no home for it. The friendliness of the employees and the fact that they don’t meddle in anything from the party and also that in the end the cleaning is (thankfully) included in the bill.
 
Ficámos com pena de não ter aceitado o extra para dormir no hotel, teríamos adorado. Os quartos são um luxo ou não fosse um cinco estrelas, mas o orçamento não dava para tudo. Creio que será uma boa solução para a passagem de ano por exemplo.
 
We were sorry for not having accepted the extra to sleep in the hotel, we would have loved it. The rooms are a luxury because this is a five star, but the our budget couldn’t cover it. I think it will be a good solution for the New Year for example.
O hotel é espectacular, a zona de refeições tem muita luz, tem SPA e um jardim de perder de vista. Uma pena o preço das estadias não se enquadrar muito com o nosso orçamento familiar ou os nossos fins de semana em Portugal teriam uma casa diferente, mais espaçosa pelo menos.
 
The hotel is spectacular, the dining area has plenty of light, has a spa and a garden to loose sight off. Too bad the Price of the bedrooms don’t fit in our family budget or our weekends in Portugal would have a different home, at least more spacious.

PARQUE MARECHAL CARMONA – CASCAIS, PORTUGAL

O Parque Marechal Carmona ou Gandarinha foi construído na década de 40. É o resultado da junção de dois espaços, os jardins do Palácio Conde Castro de Guimarães e os do Visconde da Gandarinha. Para os locais foi também conhecido como o jardim dos passarinhos e era assim que eu o chamava.
É um espaço multiusos com parque infantil, biblioteca, parque de merendas e onde em tempos se fazia eventos como o Festival do Panda. Ainda hoje todos os Sábados decorre aqui o Mercado Biológico. 

 

The Parque Marechal Carmona or Gandarinha was built in the 40s. It is the result of joining of two spaces, the gardens of the Palace of Conde Castro Guimarães and the Viscount Gandarinha. For locals it is also known as the garden of birds and that was how I called it.
It is a multipurpose space with playground, library, picnic area and where once events like the Festival of the Panda took place. Even today every Saturday the Biological Market arises here.
