Num almoço com amigos ficámos a conhecer o El Gordo de Velázquez, o restaurante do chef José Maria Ibáñez o mesmo que ajudou o famoso Jockey a ser um êxito. E não há melhor cartão de visita que este, o facto de poder comer os pratos de um bom cozinheiro a um preço acessível. Como o nome indica fica na Calle de Velázquez em pleno bairro de Salamanca, com uma “terraza” acolhedora para os dias mais quentes e um espaço interior refinado ainda que descontraído.

In a lunch with friends we got to know the El Gordo de Velázquez, the restaurant chef José Maria Ibáñez the same who helped the famous jockey to be a success. And there is no better business card than this, that you can eat the dishes of a great cook at an affordable price. As the name implies it is on Calle de Velázquez in Salamanca neighborhood, with a welcoming terrace for warmer days and a refined interior space yet relaxed.

Tenho uma imensa curiosidade em conhecer uma casa de Bath por dentro, em especial as do The Circus ou do Royal Crescent. Enquanto caminhávamos pela Royal Avenue justamente nas traseiras das casas de The Circus, uma seta indicava a direção de um jardim da época Georgiana, não era um interior de uma casa mas já era algo. Parecia uma daquelas grandes descobertas, um lugar secreto que não estava a ser explorado por mais ninguém, era o jardim do Nº4 que foi remodelado em 1985.

I have an immense curiosity to know a Bath house on the inside, especially at The Circus and the Royal Crescent. As we walked by the Royal Avenue just to the rear of the house of The Circus, an arrow indicating the direction of a garden of the Georgian era, it was not the inside of a house but it was a start. Looked like one of those great discoveries, a secret place that was not being exploited by anyone else, it was the garden of # 4 that was refurbished in 1985.

Antes de chegar ao Royal Crescent passamos pelo The Circus, o nome leva a pensar num circo mas temos que ir ás sua origem latina para saber que é um círculo porque é a forma que tem esta zona de casas construída no século XVIII. São três as ruas que rompem The Circus em três, uma é Gay Street que foi a que subimos para lá chegar, a outra é a Brock Street que nos leva até ao Royal Crescent e por último, está  a Bennett street que dá acesso ao Museu da Moda.
 

Before arriving at Royal Crescent we passed by The Circus, the name makes you think of a circus (entertainment) but we have to go to its Latin origin to know that is a circle because it is the way that this housing area was built in the eighteenth century. There are three streets that break The Circus into three, one is Gay Street that was the one that we went up to get there, the other is the Brock Street which leads us to the Royal Crescent and last is Bennett street that leads to the fashion museum .

Ponte de Pulteney – Bath, Inglaterra

A versão inglesa da Ponte Vecchio de Florença acrescenta charme a Bath, construída no século XVIII sobre o rio Avon tem tal como a sua “prima” italiana algumas lojas e um pequeno café com vista para o rio. Parece que não há nada mais romântico que sentar nesse estreito café numa mesinha colada ao rio e a tomar o chá das cinco bem acompanhados por uns scones com doce e manteiga.

The English version of the Ponte Vecchio in Florence adds charm to Bath, built in the eighteenth century on the Avon River has as its “cousin” Italian a few shops and a small cafe overlooking the river. It seems that there is nothing more romantic than sitting in that narrow place in a coffee table glued to the river and to take afternoon tea accompanied by some scones with jam and butter.

Bath é Património Mundial da Humanidade como um todo, não é só pelo Circus, pelo Royal Crescent ou pelas Termas Romanas mas toda a cidade. A juntar á lista está esta praça, Queen’s Square, discreta mas com vários detalhes com história e se não fosse pelos carros passam por ali perto ou pelas pessoas com calças de ganga seria uma foto perfeita e intacta de uma época dourada entre o século XVII e XVIII.

Bath is a World Heritage site as a whole, is not only the Circus, the Royal Crescent or the Roman Baths but the whole city. Adding to the list is this square, Queen’s Square, discreet but with several details with history and if it wasn’t for the cars passing by or by people with blue jeans it would be a perfect and intact picture of a Golden Age of the seventeenth century, XVIII.

Elegantes edificios contornam a praça e o jardim que está ao centro, nele podemos encontrar um obelisco dedicado a Frederick, Principe de Gales e herdeiro ao trono, pai de George III, não chegou a romper a sequência Georgiana porque morreu antes do pai. A dedicatória veio de Richard Nash (mais conhecido na época como Beau Nash), um famoso mestre de cerimónias em Bath a principios do século XVIII. Dizem que foi nesta praça que viveu Jane Austen e os edificios na parte Norte que têm esse toque palaciano foram desenhados por John Wood the Elder, o mesmo que criou a zona de Circus.

Elegant buildings skirt the square and the garden that is in the center, in it we can find an obelisk dedicated to Frederick, Prince of Wales and heir to the throne, the father of George III, who did not break the Georgian sequence because he died before his father. The dedication came from Richard Nash (better known at the time as Beau Nash), a famous master of ceremonies in Bath of the beginning of the eighteenth-century. They say it was in this square that Jane Austen lived and the buildings on the north side that have a paladian touch were designed by John Wood the Elder, the same that created the Circus.

Quando comprámos o bilhete combinado tinha claro que queria visitar este museu, sempre associei Bath a Jane Austen, á moda do principio do século XIX e aqui poderia estar mais perto de alguns de esses modelos que tiveram tanto êxito na época além de oferecer uma oportunidade única de experimentar um vestido e viajar no tempo. São várias galerias com mais de cento e cinquenta roupas expostas desde o século XVII até aos dias de hoje.
When we bought the combined ticket I had it clear that wanted to visit this museum, I always associated Bath to Jane Austen, to the fashion the beginning of the nineteenth century and here I could be closer to some of these models that were so successful at the time in addition to offering a unique opportunity to try a dress and travel back in time. There are several galleries with over one hundred and fifty clothes displayed from the seventeenth century to the present day.

Começamos a visita pela galeria dos Georgians onde podemos ver peças do século XVII e XVIII época em que reinaram quatro reis como o nome de George. Nesta exibição podemos ver os vestidos mais próximos aos que vemos a personagens como Elizabeth Bennet na série de Orgulho & Preconceito. Mas também tem alguns trajes masculinos muito elegantes alguns de estilo militar e algum típico da Escócia. Destacam também os Mantua que são vestidos muito largos e cuja sua extensão é dada por um saiote de ripas. Passamos depois aos Provadores, aqui podes vestir-te a rigor e tirar fotos como se vivesses na época da Rainha Vitória, é talvez a parte mais interactiva da visita.
Chegamos aos Bastidores onde estão vários vestidos expostos, catalogados e com as suas respectivas datas, é uma excelente forma de ver a evolução da moda até chegar a época Downton Abbey. Por último encontramos a moda dos dias de hoje, desde as roupas mais quotidianas aos grandes desenhadores.
Não me pareceu um museu muito grande mas tem bastante conteúdo e é passagem obrigatória quando visitamos Bath.

We began to visit the gallery of Georgians where we can see pieces from the seventeenth and eighteenth time that four kings as the name of George reigned. In this view we can see similar dresses to those we see in characters  such as Elizabeth Bennet in Pride & Prejudice series. But it also has some very stylish men’s suits some military-style and some typical of Scotland. They also emphasize the Mantua that are too large dresses and whose its length given by a kilt slats. We then go to Dressing Up, here you can dress in rigor and take pictures as if you lived at the time of Queen Victoria, it is perhaps the most interactive part of the visit. We go to the Backstage where several dresses are in display, cataloged and with their respective dates, it’s a great way to see the evolution of fashion until the time of Downton Abbey. Finally we find the fashion of today, from the most everyday clothing to the great designers.It did not seem a very big museum but has enough content and is obligatory stop when we visited Bath.

FUDGE FACTORY – BATH, INGLATERRA

Conhecemos a Fudge Factory no ano em que completou 20 anos de idade, a loja fundada por Maureen Lechmere teve a sua origem muito antes no Pier 39 em São Francisco e quando se muda para Bath trouxe o seu pequeno negócio e ainda bem, são menos milhas as que tenho que percorrer para poder comer o seu Salted Caramel.  Só nos arrependemos de uma coisa, ter ido ao fecho porque perdemos o momento em que fazem o fudge.

We know the Fudge Factory in the year they turned 20 years old, the store founded by Maureen Lechmere had its origin long before at Pier 39 in San Francisco and when switching to Bath brought her small business and thankfully, it’s less miles those I have to go to be able to eat their Salted Caramel. Only regret one thing, we went at closing time because we lost the momento they make the fudge.

Provei o de Salted Caramel e é de perder a cabeça, também devo admitir que é bastante doce e que não me senti capaz de comer todo de uma vez. Provámos também o bolo de cenoura que estava óptimo e é a prova de que não vivem apenas de fazer um bom fudge conseguindo fazer outras coisas doces. Tivémos que comer fora na esplanada enquanto fechavam a loja e foi até melhor porque está bastante perto da Abadia e das Termas dando a melhor vista possível.
Têm para levar ou oferecer vários formatos de fudge como por exemplo em forma de peças de lego ou simplesmente para levar uma lembrança de Bath.

Tasted the Salted Caramel and is really great, I must also admit that it is very sweet and did not feel able to eat all at once. Also tasted the carrot cake which was great and it is proof that not only live to make a good fudge managing to do other sweet things. We had to eat out on the terrace while they were closing the store and it was even better because it is fairly close to the Abbey and the Roman Spa giving the best possible view. To takeaway they offer various formats such as fudge shaped like Lego pieces or a simple Bath souvenir.

Termas Romanas – Bath, Inglaterra

É a principal atracção de Bath desde da sua instalação no século 75 d.C. na época de Vespasiano, conhecida pelas suas águas quentes num clima mais fresco continua ainda hoje a ser admirado por muitos dos que visitam a cidade. Graças á sua descoberta no final do século XVIII hoje podemos ver a grande terma que contém no patamar superior as estátuas de vários imperadores romanos entre eles Júlio César, o próprio Vespasiano e Adriano assim como alguns governadores da região.
 
It is the main attraction of Bath since its building in the 75 century AD at the time of Vespasian, known for its hot water in a cooler climate continues today to be admired by many who visit the city. Thanks to their discovery in the late eighteenth century today we can see the big bath containing in the upper level the statues of several Roman emperors including Julius Caesar, Vespasian himself and Hadrian as well as some governors of the región.

Abadia de Bath – Inglaterra

Bath é uma das cidades mais românticas que já visitei, tem algo de especial que se não fosse pela multidão de turistas com as suas câmaras digitais e os telemóveis colados a um “selfie stick” dirias que parou no tempo. E talvez seja assim, continua a agarrar-se ás histórias de final do século XVIII de Jane Austen e á velha glória das Termas Romanas, mas onde voltei a sentir o seu toque romântico foi na sua Abadia.

Bath is one of the most romantic cities I have ever visited, it has something special that if it was not for the throngs of tourists with their digital cameras and mobile phones glued to a selfie stick you would say it had stopped in time. And maybe so, it continues to cling to Jane Austen stories of the end of the eighteenth century and to the old glory of the Roman Baths, but where I again felt your romantic touch was in it’s Abbey.

Foi o primeiro que fizémos em Bath: comer. Tínhamos alugado um carro em Londres que demorou mais do que estávamos á espera e já chegámos aqui perto da hora de almoço (pelo menos da nossa), tinha uma lista de pubs recomendados e o The Salamander era um deles. É um lugar acolhedor mantendo uma linha de decoração tradicional com alguns detalhes modernos, a carta é a habitual neste tipo de bares mas tinha alguns pratos do dia diferentes.

I was the first we did in Bath: eat. We had rented a car in London that took longer than we were expecting and since we arrived here close to lunch time (at least ours) I had a list of recommended pubs and The Salamander was one of them. It is a cozy place keeping a traditional decor line with some modern details, the menu is the usual in this type of bars but had a few different dishes of the day.

Sentámo-nos numa pequena mesa num canto perto do bar, no piso superior têm um restaurante que não chegámos a conhecer. Eu pedi um dos pratos do dia, a sandes de rosbife que estava óptima e era uma boa porção, quase recomendaria partilhar e comer com uma salada. O outro prato foi uma “meat pie” que estava óptima. É um lugar descontraído no centro de Bath onde aproveitámos para tomar uma refeição rápida e poupar tempo para visitar a cidade.

We are at a small table in a corner near the bar on the top floor they have a restaurant that we never got to see. I ordered one of the dishes of the day, roast beef sandwich that was great and it was a good deal, almost recommend sharing and eat with a salad. The other course was a meat pie that was fine. It’s a relaxed place in the center of Bath where we took the opportunity to make a quick meal and save time to visit the city.
