Abadia de Bath – Inglaterra

Bath é uma das cidades mais românticas que já visitei, tem algo de especial que se não fosse pela multidão de turistas com as suas câmaras digitais e os telemóveis colados a um “selfie stick” dirias que parou no tempo. E talvez seja assim, continua a agarrar-se ás histórias de final do século XVIII de Jane Austen e á velha glória das Termas Romanas, mas onde voltei a sentir o seu toque romântico foi na sua Abadia.

Bath is one of the most romantic cities I have ever visited, it has something special that if it was not for the throngs of tourists with their digital cameras and mobile phones glued to a selfie stick you would say it had stopped in time. And maybe so, it continues to cling to Jane Austen stories of the end of the eighteenth century and to the old glory of the Roman Baths, but where I again felt your romantic touch was in it’s Abbey.

Foi o primeiro que fizémos em Bath: comer. Tínhamos alugado um carro em Londres que demorou mais do que estávamos á espera e já chegámos aqui perto da hora de almoço (pelo menos da nossa), tinha uma lista de pubs recomendados e o The Salamander era um deles. É um lugar acolhedor mantendo uma linha de decoração tradicional com alguns detalhes modernos, a carta é a habitual neste tipo de bares mas tinha alguns pratos do dia diferentes.

I was the first we did in Bath: eat. We had rented a car in London that took longer than we were expecting and since we arrived here close to lunch time (at least ours) I had a list of recommended pubs and The Salamander was one of them. It is a cozy place keeping a traditional decor line with some modern details, the menu is the usual in this type of bars but had a few different dishes of the day.

Sentámo-nos numa pequena mesa num canto perto do bar, no piso superior têm um restaurante que não chegámos a conhecer. Eu pedi um dos pratos do dia, a sandes de rosbife que estava óptima e era uma boa porção, quase recomendaria partilhar e comer com uma salada. O outro prato foi uma “meat pie” que estava óptima. É um lugar descontraído no centro de Bath onde aproveitámos para tomar uma refeição rápida e poupar tempo para visitar a cidade.

We are at a small table in a corner near the bar on the top floor they have a restaurant that we never got to see. I ordered one of the dishes of the day, roast beef sandwich that was great and it was a good deal, almost recommend sharing and eat with a salad. The other course was a meat pie that was fine. It’s a relaxed place in the center of Bath where we took the opportunity to make a quick meal and save time to visit the city.

Royal Crescent – Bath, Inglaterra

Bath vale a pena visitar mas tenho que admitir que uma grande parte da vontade de o fazer veio dos todos os filmes adaptando os romances de Jane Austen que tinha visto, um deles “Persuasão” termina aqui no Royal Crescent. Estava por isso em pulgas e não é que tenha sido uma decepção mas o facto de não ter visitado a casa do nº1 fez com que a experiência não fosse completa, chegámos ao fecho e já não conseguimos entrar. Seria a cereja no topo do bolo, ver uma como era uma casa na época dourada do Royal Crescent (final do século XVIII).
Bath is worth visiting but I have to admit that much of the desire to do so came from all the films adapting Jane Austen’s novels I had seen, one of them “Persuasion” ends here at the Royal Crescent. I was so excited and not that it was a disappointment but the fact of not having visited the # 1 house made the experience incomplete, we arrived at closing hour and could not get in. Would be the icing on the cake to see a house in the Golden Age of Royal Crescent (late eighteenth century).

Big Ben & Palácio de Westminster – Londres, Inglaterra

Saiu há pouco tempo uma noticia sobre o Big Ben leva quinze dias com seis segundos de atraso. Uma falha grave para quem se orgulha de dar a hora correcta, exata nem um segundo mais nem um segundo menos. Essa importância do Big Ben que é talvez o relógio e campanário mais famoso do mundo. E eu sempre que vou a Londres tento vê-lo, não para acertar o meu relógio mas porque acho que é uma excelente obra da arquitetura e nunca me canso de admirá-lo (quando posso claro).
Not so long ago there was a news about Big Ben that for fifteen days has a six second delay. A serious flaw for who is proud to give the correct, exact time not a second more or one second less. That is Big Ben’s importance it is perhaps the most famous clock and bell tower in the world. And whenever I go to London I try to see it, not to set my watch but because I do think it is a great work of architecture and never get tired of admiring it (when I can of course).

Albert’s Memorial – Londres, Inglaterra

A fascinante história de amor da Rainha Victoria e o Principe Alberto sente-se em Kensington, no seu Palácio, nos Jardins mas ainda mais no Memorial que mandou erguer depois da morte do marido. A sua construção termina em 1876 e a sua localização junto ao Hyde Park tem um grande significado, o Principe Alberto foi o grande dinamizador da Grande Exposição de 1851 que se realizou nesse loval, uma exposição universal que de alguma forma se vê também homenageada neste Memorial.
The fascinating love story of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert sets the mood in Kensington, in its palace, the gardens but even more in the Memorial that she had built after her husband’s death. Its construction ends in 1876 and its location next to Hyde Park has great significance, the Prince Albert was the great promoter of the Great Exhibition of 1851 that took place close by, a universal exhibition that somehow see also honored in this memorial.

Harrod’s – Londres, Inglarerra

Penso em Harrods e inevitavelmente penso na serie Mr. Selfridge, um dos seus grandes rivais. Além disso penso no ursinho Harrods com o seu lacinho porque é do que mais me lembro de quando entrei por primeira vez nesta grande loja de produtos de luxo. Tinha 14 anos e o que mais queria era levar um urso desses para casa, era o primeiro que viamos quando entravamos na loja hoje em dia as grandes marcas de designers tomaram conta do espaço porque é o que se procura.
I think of Harrods and inevitably think of the series Mr. Selfridge, one of its major rivals. Also I think of Harrods teddy bear with his bow and because it is what I remember best from when I came for the first time to this large luxury goods store. I was 14 and what I wanted most was to take a bear home, was the first we used to see when we entered the store nowadays the great designer brands have taken over the space because it is what is people demand the most.

Portobello Market – Londres, Inglaterra

Descobri Portobello ao mesmo tempo que o filme do Hugh Grant e Julia Roberts, Notting Hill. Desde então quando vou a Londres procuro ruas circulares com pequenas casas coloridas e um banco de madeira num frondoso jardim…mas se vamos a Portobello em dias de mercado encontramos exatamente o contrário, mal conseguimos ver as casas e há uma multidão de pessoas que procuram pechinchas, antiguidades ou simplesmente vão passear.

Portobello I discovered at the same of the Hugh Grant’s and Julia Roberts movie, Notting Hill. Since then when I go to London I look for the crescent street with small colorful houses and a wooden bench in a garden … but if we go to Portobello on a market day we find just the opposite, we can hardly see the houses behind it and there is a crowd of people looking for bargains, antiques or simply go sightseeing.

Kensington Palace – Londres, Inglaterra

É a residência oficial dos duques de Cambridge, foi a casa da Princesa Diana e foi o lugar onde nasceu a Rainha Vitória, tudo isto acrescenta á visita do Kensington Palace, porque umas poucas paredes separam o museu da casa real. Logo ao entrar vemos as referências á Princesa Diana e á Rainha Vitória, a visita começa com a história da vida de esta última com peças que vão desde a sua infância até aos seus últimos dias como Rainha de Inglaterra.

It is the official residence of the Dukes of Cambridge, was the home of Princess Diana and was the birthplace of Queen Victoria, all this adds to the visit of the Kensington Palace, because a few walls separate the royal house from the museum. And as soon as we go in we can see the references to Princess Diana and Queen Victoria, the visit begins with the story of the life of the latter with pieces ranging from her childhood up to his last days as Queen of England.

O Palácio ganha importância no século XVIII durante o reinado de William III, anos mais tarde a sua sobrinha Rainha Ana que termina a obra do tio na recuperação de Kensington, durante o seu reinado surgem os Aposentos da Rainha que podemos ver hoje. Mas a sua residente mais importante foi sem dúvida a Princesa Alexandria Vitória que nasceu aqui, conheceu o Principe Alberto e recebeu a noticia da morte do seu tio.  A parte que podemos visitar está dividida entre os Aposentos do Rei e os da Rainha, os do Rei começam com uma elaborada escadaria e o ponto alto da visita é a Galeria. Os da Rainha mais discretos, têm uma escada em madeira, podemos ver a galeria e o seu quarto.
Há também uma exposição de Fashion Rules que contém roupa da Rainha Isabel II, da sua irmã Margarida e da Princesa Diana, alguns deles emblemáticos utilizados em eventos públicos.
The Palace gains importance in the eighteenth century during the reign of William III, years later his niece Queen Anne ending his uncle’s work in the recovery of Kensington, during his reign the Queen Apartments that we can see today. But its most important resident was undoubtedly the Princess Alexandria Victoria who was born here, met Prince Albert and received the news of the death of his uncle. The part that we can visit is divided between the Quarters of the King and the Queen, the King begin with an elaborate staircase and the highlight of the visit is the Gallery. The Queen’s are more discrete, have a wooden staircase, we can see the gallery and a bedroom.
There is also a Fashion Rules exhibition containing clothes of Queen Elizabeth II, her sister Margaret and Princess Diana, some of them quite emblematic has they were used at public events.

É um dos Royal Parks de London e fazia parte dos jardins privados do Palácio de Kensington, onde nasceu a Princesa Vitória e onde após a noticia da morte do seu tio se tornou Rainha. Colado ao Hyde Park é difícil perceber onde um termina e o outro começa, mas o melhor é que tem muito para ver e é o plano ideal para o fim de semana quando queres dar um passeio. São 111 hectares de verde, lagos, esculturas, esplanadas e jardins secretos.
It is one of the Royal Parks of London and was part of the private gardens of Kensington Palace, where Princess Victoria was born and where after the news of the death of his uncle became Queen. Glued to Hyde Park is hard to see where one ends and the other begins, but it is best with a lot to see and is the ideal plan for the weekend when you want to take a walk. Are 111 hectares of green, lakes, sculptures, terraces and secret gardens.

Pride of Paddington – Londres, Inglaterra

O nosso primeiro Fish & Chips em Londres foi no Pride of Paddington, o pub do bairro. O nosso hotel ficava em Paddington e no primeiro dia ás três da tarde a fome era mais que muita, foi quando encontrámos este Pub que também é uma pensão, prometem camas a partir de 19 libras por noite. Foi remodelado em 2011 mas mantém o seu espírito de pub tradicional com uma carta onde o Fish & Chips, os Sunday Roast e as Shepperd Pie marcam presença.

Our first Fish & Chips in London was in the Pride of Paddington, the neighborhood pub. Our hotel was located in Paddington and on the first day at three o’clock we were starving, that’s when we found this Pub which is also a pension that promises beds from 19 pounds per night. It was renovated in 2011 but retains its spirit of traditional pub with a menu in which the Fish & Chips, the Sunday Roast and Shepperd Pie are present.
