Caminhando pelas ruas do Financial District em busca do famoso Touro de Wall Street encontrámos esta igreja e interrompemos o nosso plano inicial para entrar. E isto foi o que achei fantástico de andar por ali, estávamos rodeados por arranha-céus, gente a caminhar com pressa e de repente vês um cemitério antigo adjacente á Trinity church rodeado de árvores e quando entras deixas de ouvir o ruído, encontras alguma paz e tranquilidade.
Walking the streets of the Financial District in search of the famous bull of Wall Street we found this church and interrupted our initial plan to go in. And this was what I found amazing to walk in this place, we were surrounded by skyscrapers, people walking in a hurry and suddenly you see an old cemetery adjacent to Trinity church surrounded by trees and when you enter you stop listening to the noise, finding some peace and tranquility.

É complicado esquecer o que aconteceu no dia 11 de Setembro de 2011 na cidade de Nova Iorque, eu lembro-me exactamente onde estava e com quem estava quando parámos de trabalhar e olhámos para a televisão boquiabertos. Para sempre ficou a memória das pessoas que saltavam do edificio porque simplesmente já não viam nenhuma opção, vivemos esse dia trágico sem nunca entender muito bem a dimensão do problema. Visitar o Memorial de 9/11 fez-me voltar a viver esse dia, voltar a recordar que a vida é curta, que um dia vais trabalhar e nunca mais regressas.

 

It’s hard to forget what happened on September 11, 2011 in New York City, I remember exactly where I was and who I was with when we stopped working and looked at the televisión with our jaws dropped. Forever was the memory of the people who jumped from the building because they simply didn’t have any other way out that tragic day we live without ever quite understand the scale of the problem. To visit the Memorial of 9/11 made me re-live that day, remembering that life is short, one day you to go work and you never return.

A chuva e um erro na nossa app do Trip Advisor fez-nos chegar até ao The Meatball shop, sim…existe um paraíso de almôndegas. A primeira coisa que me fez sentir “em casa” foi a decoração retro, num ambiente acolhedor onde fomos muito bem recebidos desde o primeiro minuto e podemos comer almôndegas de todas as maneiras: num ninho de esparguete, numa sandes ou sozinhas com outro tipo de acompanhamento á parte.
The rain and a mistake in our app from Trip Advisor made us reach The Meatball Shop, yes … there is a haven of meatballs. The first thing that made me feel “at home” was the retro decor, a cozy environment where we were made very welcome from the first minute and we can eat meatballsin every posible way: in a nest of spaghetti, a sandwich or alone with somethin on the side.

Os empregados eram muito simpáticos e trocámos alguns dedos conversa com um deles que era francês, perguntou de onde éramos e o futebol foi o catalizador. O primeiro que fazem é explicar-te como funciona, nós optámos pelas Naked Balls, escolhemos a qualidade da carne, depois o molho e o acompanhamento. Eu escolhi com molho de natas e parmesão (parmesan cream) acompanhando com o risotto do dia que era de legumes e um pão Focaccia. Adorei a comida, são tenras e suculentas, o molho estava perfeito e o risotto completava muito bem o prato. Não sendo a escolha mais óbvia foi uma excelente combinação.
Para sobremesa comi o icecream sandwich com uma bola de gelado de hortelã (mint) e duas cookies de chocolate. A comida estava perfeita e foi um dos meus restaurantes preferidos de Nova Iorque, só faltou perguntar-lhes quando abrem um em Madrid ou Lisboa.
The employees were very friendly and we exchanged a good conversation with one of them who was French, asked where we were from and football was the catalyst. The first  thing they do is to explain to you is how it works, we opted for the Naked Balls, choose the quality of the meat, then sauce and the side. I chose the parmesan cream sauce with a risotto of the day (with vegetables) as a side and focaccia bread. Loved the food, it was tender and juicy, the sauce was perfect and the risotto complemented the dish very well. Not the most obvious choice but it was an excellent combination.
For dessert  I had the icecream sandwich with a scoop of mint ice cream and two chocolate chip cookies. The food was perfect and it was one of my favorite restaurants in New York, I forgot to ask when they would open one in Madrid or Lisbon.

Queríamos apanhar um ferry para ver a Estátua da Liberdade de mais perto, não era necessário subir á coroa ou estar aos seus pé só queríamos vê-la com um pouco mais de detalhe. Decidimos procurar o ferry que vai até Staten Island mas fomos ao sitio errado passando primeiro pela zona do Battery park onde vendem os bilhetes para ir á Ellis island e a Estátua, as filas eram enormes e a cara das pessoas transmitia desespero.
 
We wanted to catch a ferry to see the Statue of Liberty closer, it was not necessary to climb to the crown or sit at her feet we just wanted to see her with a little more detail. We decided to look for the ferry that goes to Staten Island but went to the wrong place passing first through the Battery Park area where they sell the tickets to go to Ellis Island and the Statue, the queues were huge and people’s faces conveyed despair.

Chegámos á estação de ferries queno Whitehall e quando entrámos ficámos numa grande fila, ao principio assusta e pensas que não vais entrar, que tens que esperar pelo próximo que só vem em meia-hora mas não, cabem todos! Não se paga que é uma das grandes vantagens e se queres ver melhor a Estátua convém entrar pelo lado direito ou ir até ao fundo do barco á parte da frente, tem menos espaço mas vê-se muito bem. O que muitos turistas (como nós fazem) é sair do ferry e voltar a entrar para regressar a Manhattan, ao fazê-lo o ideal é ir outra vez á frente porque a vista do Financial district é uma das melhores.
Adorámos este passeio, uma boa maneira de conhecer um pouco mais de Nova Iorque evitando as filas enormes e ainda por cima sem pagar por isso. Agradeço a todos os que nos deram esta dica.
 
Arrived at the ferry station which is in Whitehall and when we entered we were in a long line, at the beginning it’s scary and you think you’re not going in, you have to wait for the next one that only comes in half-hour but no, there is place for everyone! It’s free which is one of the great advantages and if you want to see the Statue best should get to the right or go to the end of the boat in the front it has less room but you can see very well. What many tourists (like we) is to leave the ferry and re-enter to return to Manhattan, to make it the ideal thing is to go ahead again because the view of the Financial district is one of the best.
We loved this tour, a good way to learn a little more from New York to avoid the huge queues and on top without paying for it. I want to thank everyone who gave us this tip.

Depois de alguns dias a comer bagels ao pequeno-almoço começava a fazer falta provar outra das iguarias que estava na nossa lista: os donuts. Numa tentativa de evitar que o marido fosse ao Dunkin’ Donut (apenas porque há cá em Madrid) pesquisei pelos melhores donuts em Nova Iorque e de preferência perto do nosso bairro até que chegámos ao Doughnut Plant, a pastelaria que se orgulha de ter criado o primeiro donut de crème brûlée.
After a few days of eating bagels for breakfast began to miss tasting other delicacies that were on our list: the donuts. In an attempt to prevent my husband of going to the Dunkin’ Donut (just because they exist in Madrid) searched by the best donuts in New York, preferably near our neighborhood until we reached the Doughnut Plant, the pastry is proud to have created the first crème brûlée donut.

Precisava de comer um gelado e quando passei de manhã no High Line pela L’Arte del Gelato não consegui tirar a ideia da cabeça (nem do estômago), quando regressámos ao parque ao final do dia sentámo-nos nas cadeiras a ver o pôr do sol e a saborear um dos seus gelados. Escolhi um dos meus sabores preferidos que é o menta com chocolate e decidi provar um que não costumo pedir que foi o do coco.
 
I needed to eat some ice cream and when I went that morning to the High Line I passed by L’Arte del Gelato and could not take the idea of the head (or stomach), when we returned to the park at the end of the day we sat down in the chairs watching the sunset sun and sip one of their ice cream. I chose one of my favorite flavors that is the mint chocolate and decided to try one that usually do not ask that is the coconut.

Pedi a “coppetta piccola” e os dois sabores que escolhi foram acertados ambos deliciosos. O preço achei um pouco exagerado (ou talvez sejam os preços normais da cidade) porque custou cinco dólares o copo com os dois sabores e não foram particularmente generosos.
Está também dentro do Chelsea Market onde está aberto todo o ano, os outros dois locais estão abertos nos meses de mais quentes.
 
I ordered the “coppetta piccola” and the two flavors I chose were both delicious. The price I found a bit exaggerated (or maybe they are the standard rates in town) because it cost five five dollars a cup with two flavors and were not particularly generous.
Is also inside the Chelsea Market which is open all year, the other two places are open in the warmer months.

Passeámos no High Line já no último dia completo que tínhamos em Nova Iorque, a entrada norte ficava muito perto do nosso apartamento mas fomos primeiro tomar o pequeno-almoço no Doughnut Plant e já entrámos um pouco mais á frente, ainda assim conseguimos ver uma boa parte do parque construido utilizando a antiga linha de comboios da West Side Line.
Strolled the High Line on the last full day we had in New York, the north entrance was very close to our apartment but we first had breakfast at Doughnut Plant, and therefore we entered it a little further ahead, we still can see a good part of the park built using the old train line called West Side line.

Como fomos visitar uns primos, levaram-nos de carro até ao centro. Estacionámos junto ao Monorail de Seattle e de aqui já temos a noção de como é uma grande cidade norte-americana. Arranha-céus por todo o lado, muita gente na rua apesar do frio e da chuva e neste caso, porque fomos no Natal, as decorações natalicias.
Apanhámos então o monorail de Seattle, uma óptima experiência para ver um pouco da cidade principalmente em dias chuvosos como o de hoje. O nosso destino era o Experience Music Project que fica muito próximo da famosa e icónica Space Needle.

Hoje conhecemos o Ruby’s, um tipico “diner” americano ou talvez um franchising de um tipico “diner” americano. Mas isso pouco importa, para quem nunca conheceu nenhum verdadeiro, este serve perfeitamente.
Tudo era perfeito, tudo relembra a época dourada deste tipo de restaurantes. Viémos para um “brunch”, chegámos ontem á noite a Seattle, estávamos ainda um pouco atordoados com o “jet lag” e por isso um “brunch” vinha mesmo a calhar, era um pequeno-almoço tomado a horas de almoço e o Ruby’s era o lugar ideal para isso.
 
Today we discovered Ruby’s, a typical american diner or perhaps a franchise of a typical american diner. But it hardly matters, who never met any real, this works fine.
Everything was perfect, everything recalls the golden age of this type of restaurants. We came to brunch, we arrived last night in Seattle, we were still with a little stunned with the “jet lag” and therefore brunch would really be nice, it was a breakfast taken the hours of lunch and Ruby’s was the place for it.
Provavelmente a decoração nem tem nada a ver, mas ao entrar no Ruby’s veio-me logo á cabeça a imagem do Michael J. Fox no “Regresso ao Futuro” quando viaja no tempo até ao passado e entra num diner destes. As paredes estão forradas com antigas campanhas publicitárias da Coca-Cola, numa clara parceria e no tecto, como diversão e decoração uma pista de comboios.
Pedi um “strawberry milkshake” e uma “french toast”, saímos a abarrotar. E quando eu achava que já tinha terminado o meu batido com muito custo, vem o empregado e traz o resto…sim o resto, na realidade pagamos um e bebemos dois.

Probably the decor has nothing to do with it but getting into Ruby’s it soon come to my head the image of Michael J. Fox in “Back to the Future” when traveling in time he goes into the past and enters a diner like this. The walls are lined with old advertising campaigns for Coca-Cola, a clear partnership and as ceiling decoration a train.
I ordered a strawberry milkshake“and french toast, and we left quite full. And when I thought I had finished my milkshake at great cost, the employee comes and brings the rest … yes the rest, in reality you pay one but you drink two.
 
Update 2013: Já não existem restaurantes Ruby’s em Seattle estão apenas na Califórnia, Nova Jersey, Nevada, Texas e Pennsylvania.
There are no more Ruby’s restaurants in Seattle they are only in California New Jersey, Nevada, Texas and Pennsylvania.
