Quando penso na Igreja de San Manuel e San Benito penso na expressão “hidden gem” (tesouro escondido) tão utilizada em viagens, eu demorei cinco anos para conhecer e ser surpreendida por esta pequena paróquia no bairro de Salamanca muito perto do retiro. É a única com estilo neobizantino em toda a Espanha, foi construída no principio do século XX e se o seu exterior já se destaca o seu interior é extraordinário.
When I think of the Church of San Manuel and San Benito I think of the expression “hidden gem” (hidden treasure) as so many times used in travel, it took me five years to know and be surprised by this small parish in the Salamanca neighborhood very close to the Retiro. It is the only one with neo-Byzantine style throughout Spain, it was built at the beginning of the twentieth century and its exterior already stands out but its interior is extraordinary.e ser

Não é muito grande e a estrela principal é a sua cúpula com uma estrutura de pendículo que se destaca em outras igrejas do bizantino como a Hagia Sophia em Istambul. No altar estão três esculturas em mármore, Jesus Cristo ao centro e nas laterais São Manuel e São Benito. Igualmente interessante é a história da Igreja, construída para ser panteão da familia de Manuel Caviggioli e de Benita Maurici o que ajuda a entender porquê está dedicada aos santos Manuel e Benito. No seu interior reina a paz e o silêncio, podes contemplar o fantástico trabalho de azulejo bizantino tranquilamente.
It’s not very big and the main star is its dome with a Pendentive structure that stands out in other churches of the Byzantine such as the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. On the altar there are three sculptures in marble, Jesus Christ in the center and San Manuel and San Benito by his side. Equally interesting is the history of the Church, built to be the pantheon of the family of Manuel Caviggioli and Benita Maurici which helps to understand why is dedicated to the saints Manuel and Benito. I it’s interior peace and silence reign, you can admire the fantastic work of Byzantine tile quietly.

FACE THE FORCE EXPO – MADRID, ESPANHA

Está a decorrer até ao dia 30 de Novembro uma exposição ao ar livre do Star Wars: Face the Force. O filme estreia na cidade no dia 18 de Dezembro e até lá são várias as ações de divulgação, esta é uma delas mas há outras, como por exemplo, Storm Troopers a tirar fotografias á porta das lojas Disney. A exposição está formada por oito capacetes alusivos á série cujas localizações se podem ver neste mapa: http://www.starwars.es/face-the-force.
Is taking place until 30th November an outdoor exhibition of Star Wars: Face the Force. The film opens in the city on December 18 and there are a number of marketing activities, this is one of them but there are others, such as Storm Troopers taking pictures outside Disney stores. The exhibition is made by eight depicting helmets from the series whose locations can be seen on this map: http://www.starwars.es/face-the-force.

Durante o passeio pela cidade consegui ver quatro deles, o Captain Phasma que está no Jardín de los Descubrimientos perto da Plaza del Colón, o outro era um Storm Trooper da First Order que está á entrada do Parque del Retiro com a Puerta del Alcalá como pano de fundo. Junto á Gran Via, na Plaza de España está um piloto da Resistência e consegui ver o tão esperado Darth Vader que está na Glorieta de Bilbao que na minha opinião não é a melhor localização para ele porque se junta muita gente num espaço tão pequeno (eu diria que é o que está na zona mais pequena). Espero encontrar os quatro que faltam que estão junto ao Reina Sofia, ao Parque Madrid Rio, á Glorieta de Santa María de la Cabeza e o Estádio Santiago Bernabéu.

During the city tour I got to see four of them, Captain Phasma which is the Jardín de los Descubrimientos near the Plaza del Colon, the other was a Storm Trooper of the First Order which is at the entrance of the Parque del Retiro with the Puerta del Alcala in the background. Near the Gran Via, in Plaza de España there is a pilot of the Resistance and I got to see the highly anticipated Darth Vader that is in Glorieta de Bilbao which in my opinion is not the best location for it because it concentrates too many people in such a small space (I would say it’s what’s in the smallest area). I hope to find the four missing which is by the Reina Sofia, the Park Madrid Rio, Glorieta de Santa María de la Cabeza and the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

Plaza del Triunfo – Sevilha, Espanha

Nesta praça estão três edificios considerados Património Mundial por parte da UNESCO: a Catedral, o Alcázar e o Arquivo General de Indias que convivem numa estranha harmonia arquitetónica já que não têm muito em comum, a Catedral foi construída entre os séculos XV e XVI com um estilo gótico, a Casa de la Lonja onde está o Arquivo foi construída no final do século XVI e o Alcázar teve várias fases de construção que lhe deu características do gótico e do estilo mudéjar.

In this square are three buildings considered World Heritage by UNESCO: the Cathedral, the Alcazar and the Indias General Archive who live in a strange architectural harmony as they do not have much in common, the Cathedral was built between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries with a gothic style, Casa de la Lonja where the Archive is was built in the late sixteenth century and the Alcázar had several phases of construction that gave it characteristics of gothic and Mudejar style.

PLAZA VIRGEN DE LOS REYES – SEVILHA, ESPANHA

Esta praça é a porta de entrada ao Bairro da Santa Cruz e tem uma das melhores vistas para a Giralda que é sem dúvida o edificio mais marcante mas não é o único. Aqui encontramos o Palácio Arzobispal e no lado oposto o Convento de la Encarnación. Históricamente era conhecido como o Corral de los Olmos pelos encontros políticos que aqui se davam para discutir vários temas da cidade. Hoje é um ponto de encontro para os que querem começar a sua visita pela cidade.

This square is the gateway to the Santa Cruz district and has one of the best views of the Giralda which is arguably the most striking building but not the only one. Here we find the Archbishop’s Palace and on the side opposite the Convent of la Encarnación. Historically was known as the Corral de los Olmos because of the political meetings held here they got on to discuss various topics of the city. Today is a meeting point for those who want to start their tour of the city. 

Além disso é possível aproveitar a praça sentados na esplanada do número 2, o restaurante  Giraldillo. Ao centro está a Fonte criada em 1925 para Exposição Mundial, um monumental candeeiro desenhado por José Diaz. O Palácio Arzobispal é utilizado desde do século XIII mas no século XVI é remodelado ganhando o estilo barroco que podemos contemplar hoje. O Convento foi fundado em 1591 pela ordem Agustina e foi construído no lugar onde antes estava o Hospital de Santa Marta. Muita história e arquitetura numa pequena praça á qual vale a pena dedicar tempo.

Also you can enjoy the square sitting on the terrace of No. 2, the Giraldillo restaurant. At the center is the Fountain created in 1925 for the World Expo, a monumental lamp designed by Jose Diaz. The Archbishop’s Palace has been used since the thirteenth century but in the sixteenth century is remodeled winning the Baroque style that we can contemplate today. The convent was founded in 1591 by the Augustinian order and was built on the site where once stood the Hospital of Santa Marta. Lots of history and architecture in a small square will which is worth devoting time.

Torre del Oro – Sevilha, Espanha

A Torre del Oro parece um monumento pequeno mas não é, do seu topo podemos ter as melhores vistas sobre Sevilha e no seu interior conhecer um pouco mais sobre a história naval de Espanha. Está junto ao Guadalquivir e é uma atalaia construída no século XIII para proteger a cidade. Uma herança dos tempos do Califado Almóada e que se nota na sua arquitetura, pertencia juntamente com a Torre de la Plata ás muralhas que defendiam Sevilha.

The Torre del Oro looks like a small monument but it is not, from its top it is posible to have one of the best views of Seville and inside learn more about the naval history of Spain. It is by the Guadalquivir and is a watchtower built in the thirteenth century to protect the city. A legacy from the Almohad Caliphate times and you can see it in its architecture, belonged along with the Torre de la Plata to the walls defending Seville.

Parque María Luisa – Sevilha, Espanha

Perto da famosa Plaza de Espanha está o parque María Luisa, parte dos jardins do Palácio de San Telmo que os duques de Montpensier ofereceram á cidade e daí a dedicatória á Infanta María Luisa, filha do rei D. Fernando e María Cristina. Construído no final do século XIX é o maior parque de Sevilha que para além das suas zonas verdes tem vários lagos, fontes, estátuas e trabalhos de cerâmica que fazem valer a pena explorar cada recanto de esta cidade.

Close to the famous Plaza of Spain is the Maria Luisa Park, part of the gardens of the Palacio de San Telmo the Dukes of Montpensier offered to the city and hence the dedication will Infanta María Luisa, daughter of King Ferdinand and Maria Cristina. Built in the late nineteenth century is the largest park in Seville that in addition to its green areas has several lakes, fountains, statues and pottery works that make it worthwhile to explore every corner of this city.

 

Não conseguimos ver tudo, vimos o essencial. Entrámos pela Glorieta de Gabriela Ortega Gómez e ali perto encontrámos o monumento dedicado á Infanta María Luisa, um lugar calmo e discreto com uma pequena fonte e nada mais mas com alguns dos recantos mais românticos do parque. Foi inaugurado em 1914 e com a Exposição Universal de 1929 foi remodelado ganhando novos pavilhões, zonas de lazer juntamente com as Plazas de España e de América. Foi um passeio agradável mas não conseguimos ver tudo o que nos fez pensar que talvez numa próxima oportunidade podíamos alugar um dos carrinhos a pedais para aproveitar melhor o parque.
 
We could not see everything, we saw the essential. We entered by the Glorieta de Gabriela Ortega Gómez and nearby we found the monument dedicated to the Infanta María Luisa, a quiet and discreet place with a small fountain and nothing else but with some of the most romantic corners of the park. It opened in 1914 and for the Universal Exhibition of 1929 was remodeled gaining new pavilions, recreational areas along with the Plazas de España and America. It was a nice walk but we can not see anything that made us think that maybe at the next opportunity we could rent a spedal stroller to better enjoy the park.

BODEGA DE SANTA CRUZ – SEVILHA, ESPANHA

Depois de subir ao topo da Giralda e apreciar a fantástica vista sobre Sevilha veio uma súbita vontade de tomar uma cerveja fresquinha, decidimos entrar pelo bairro de Santa Cruz e procurar um bar para o aperitivo. O escolhido foi a Bodega de Santa Cruz e tinha várias credenciais: está no top 50 dos restaurantes da cidade no ranking do TripAdvisor, boas tapas a bons preços.

After climbing to the top of the Giralda and enjoying the fantastic views of Seville came a sudden urge to have a cold beer, we decided to enter the neighborhood of Santa Cruz and look for a bar for an aperitif. The chosen was the Bodega Santa Cruz and had multiple credentials: is in the top 50 restaurants in the city on the TripAdvisor ranking, good tapas at good prices.

Dizem que está sempre cheio, tivémos sorte e conseguimos um cantinho ao balcão o que nos permitiu escolher visualmente o que queríamos: uma tapa de salada russa e uma de camarão cozido. Foi a melhor maneira de matar a sede e abrir o apetite para o almoço, ainda bem que fizémos uma pit stop aqui. A decoração típica de uma taberna sevilhana: azulejos, mesas e bancos de madeira escura, não o achei particularmente acolhedor mas cumpre o seu objetivo: tapas baratas e de qualidade.

They say it is always full, we were lucky and got a corner over the counter which allowed us to visually choose what we wanted: a Russian salad tapa and some shrimp. It was the best way to quench our thirst and open our appetite for lunch, so glad we made one pit stop here. The typical decoration of a Sevillian Tavern: tiles, dark wood tables and benches, did not find it particularly warm but fulfills its purpose: cheap tapas with quality.

Mais um Domingo de Rastro e desta vez decidimos comer em Lavapiés, para escapar ao tradicional cheiro a caril o Moharaj decidimos experimentar Los Porfiados. Junto ao seu logo está um slogan: “Comida hecha a mano” e é verdade, sais de este lugar com a confirmação que ás vezes as receitas mais simples são as melhores, as que mais te marcam e as que te fazem ter vontade de voltar. Gostei também da decoração, tinha bastante luz, pratos antigos como os que ando á caça no Rastro, mesas de madeira rústica e cadeiras nacionalidades diferentes.

Another Sunday in Rastro and this time we decided to eat in Lavapies, to escape the traditional smell of curry the Moharaj we decided to try Los Porfiados. Next to its logo there is a slogan: “Comida hecha a mano” (Handmade food) and it is true you get out of this place with confirmation that sometimes the simplest recipes are the best, they are the ones that impress you the most and that make you want to come back. Also liked the decor, had enough light, vintage plates like those I go hunting for in Rastro, rustic wooden tables and chairs of different nationalities.

Para além de boa comida, Los Porfiados têm uma boa história, quatro sócio argentinos com uma paixão pela cozinha e por fazer muito com pouco. Fomos com os nossos filhos e pedimos uma sopa deliciosa para começar, é sempre complicado encontrar restaurantes que a tenham. Depois pedimos as Empanadillas (uma da carne e outra de queijo), uma excelente maneira para começar.
Os pratos principais foram o Hamburguer Sheriff e um Fish and Chips para os miúdos, tudo óptimo e a destacar a qualidade dos ingredientes, o peixe derretia-se na boca e a carne do hamburguer era bastante suculenta. Para terminar uma sobremesa bombástica: milfolhas de leite condensado. Boa comida, cozinhada com carinho e honestidade, o serviço impecável e simpático, voltaremos sem dúvida.

In addition to good food, Los Porfiados have a good story, four Argentine partners with a passion for cooking and to do a lot with little. We went with our children and ordered a delicious soup to start, it is always difficult to find restaurants that have this. Then we asked for the Empanadillas (one meat and one cheese), an excellent way to start. The main dishes were the Sheriff Burger and Fish and Chips for the kids, all great and highlight the quality of ingredients, the fish melted in the mouth and burger meat was very juicy. To end a bombastic dessert: condensed milk “milfolhas”. Good food, cooked with love and honesty, impeccable and friendly service, we will return without a doubt.

O Thong é um dos poucos restaurantes chineses – sem ser os de buffet asiático – que conheço em Madrid, aliás no centro é o único e o outro é um perto do bairro onde vivemos. Estranhei a pergunta á entrada de se tínhamos reserva, fomos a um domingo desses que muitos preferem ficar em casa porque chove e a verdade é que ao entrar no restaurante estava vazio mas em pouco mais de quinze minutos encheu. Vêm pela boa comida e serviço correto.

The Thong is one of the few Chinese restaurants – without being the Asian buffet – I know in Madrid, actually in the city centre it’s the only one and the other is near the neighborhood where we live. Strangely upon arrival we were asked if we had reservations, we went on a Sunday on of those many would prefer to stay at home because it was raining and the truth is that on entering the restaurant it was empty but in just over fifteen minutes filled. They come for good food and correct service.

Para começar, crepes ou como se diz por aqui “rollitos de primavera”, recheio razoável e massa estaladiça, não foram os meus favoritos porque lhes faltam mais sabor. Para compensar veio o melhor prato do almoço: tiras de frango crocante com sésamo (pollo crujiente con sésamo), muito saboroso mas obriga a comer rápido porque depois perde a graça. Gambas agridoces que tinham a vantagem de ter um boa fritura e o Caril de frango que parece ser um dos pratos mais procurados para além do Pato á Pequim. Não pedimos sobremesa e ainda assim a conta ronda 20€ por pessoa, tem qualidade mas o preço não me pareceu muito “chinês”.
For starters, crepes or as we say here “Rollitos Primavera” (Spring rolls) with a reasonable filling and crunchy dough, were not my favorite because they lacked more flavor. To compensate came the best plate of our lunch: crispy chicken strips with sesame (pollo con crujiente sesame), very tasty but requires eating fast because then loses its charm. Gambas Agridoce that had the advantage of having a good fry and chicken curry that seems to be one of the most popular dishes in addition to the Duck of Beijing (Pato á Pequim). We did not ordered dessert and yet the bill was around 20 € per person, has quality but the price did not seem very “chinese”.

FRANGUS – MADRID, ESPANHA

Uma manhã no Rastro a trocar cromos para a caderneta de futebol dos pequenos e á caça de pratos vintage para a coleção lá de casa abriu-nos o apetite. Mesmo ali ao lado está um restaurante cujos metros quadrados são como se fossem um pedacinho de Portugal a vinte minutos de nossa casa, o Frangus. Parece a típica casa de frangos assados como temos no nosso país com pasteis de nata, bacalhau, migas, etc..

One morning in the Rastro trading cards for a football book of our children and hunting for vintage plates back home collection opened the appetite. Right next door is a restaurant whose square meters are as if they were a piece of Portugal twenty minutes away from our house, the Frangus. It seems the typical baked chicken house as we have in our country with “pasteis de nata”, cod, “migas”, etc ..
