Quando fomos a Oxford tinha claro que quería ir comer ao Pie Minister no Covered Market. Levámos uma agradável surpresa ao visitar este mercado pelo seu luminoso e colorido interior quando comparado com a sua fachada exterior mais simples e conservadora. Surpreende também a sua origem, o primeiro mercado é construido no século XVIII para retirar das ruas as bancadas que vendiam carne, verduras, etc..

When we went to Oxford it was clear that I wanted to go eat at the Pie Minister at Covered Market. We took a pleasant surprise to visit this market for its bright and colorful interior when compared to its simpler and more conservative exterior facade. It also surprises its origin, the first market is built in the eighteenth century to remove from the streets the benches that sold meat, vegetables, etc.

Sheldonian Theatre – Oxford, Inglaterra

Gilbert Sheldon, reitor da universidade de Oxford (no século XVII) foi o principal apoiante da construção deste edificio e como homenagem, recebeu o seu nome, Sheldonian. Ainda hoje se utiliza para concertos musicais e para cerimónias da Universidade. O que fazem questão de assinalar é que não fazem funções dramáticas, sendo um teatro sem peças/obras na realidade.

Gilbert Sheldon, rector of the University of Oxford (in the seventeenth century) was the main supporter of the construction of this building and as a tribute, received its name, Sheldonian. Even today it is used for musical concerts and for university ceremonies. What they point out is that it is not used to perform dramatic functions, being a theater without parts / works in reality.

Christ Church College – Oxford, Inglaterra

O nosso primeiro post sobre Oxford vai para uma das suas universidades mais famosas, a Christ Church. Palco de Bridshead Revisited e Alice no País das Maravilhas, tornou-se ainda mais conhecida graças aos filmes de Harry Potter. A entrada principal é na Tom’s Gate mas os visitantes entram pelos Meadow buildings, percorrendo um bonito jardim relvado com vista para a sua catedral.

Our first post on Oxford goes to one of its most famous universities, Christ Church. The stage of Bridshead Revisited and Alice in Wonderland, became even better known thanks to the Harry Potter films. The main entrance is at Tom’s Gate but visitors enter through the Meadow buildings, traversing a beautiful lawned garden overlooking their cathedral.

A este restaurante fomos com amigos que vivem em Londres, foi talvez o mais caro que experimentámos quando visitámos a cidade mas o que representasse melhor a actual cozinha inglesa onde a proteína principalmente o produto de caça são o centro das atenções. O seu interior tem uma decoração simples mas cuidada e quando entras o primeiro que vês é a cozinha.

At this restaurant we went with friends who live in London, it was perhaps the most expensive we experienced when we visited the city but the one that represented best the current English cuisine where protein mainly the game product are the center of attention. Its interior has a simple but neat decoration and when you enter the first one you see is the kitchen.

Gelupo – Londres, Inglaterra

Visitámos Londres no Verão e apesar de ser das cidades que considero mais agradáveis para visitar nessa altura – graças ás suas temperaturas mais frescas em comparação com os 38º de média de Madrid – sempre necessito comer um gelado. E se for saboroso e cremoso ainda melhor. A Gelupo promete (e cumpre) a experiência de comer um bom “gelato” com os seus sabores tradicionais e algumas inovações de inspiração italiana.

We visited London in the summer and although it is one of the cities I consider the most pleasant to visit at that time – thanks to its cooler temperatures compared to Madrid’s 38º average – I always need to eat ice cream. And if it’s tasty and creamy even better. Gelupo promises (and fulfills) the experience of eating a good “gelato” with its traditional flavors and some Italian-inspired innovations.

Este mercado era um dos que estava na nossa lista de lugares a visitar, só nos arrependemos foi de o ter “encaixado” numa hora que não era a das refeições principais acabando por não ter a experiencia completa o que foi uma pena. O que mais gostámos foi que nos pareceu bastante genuíno que continua a manter o seu mercado tradicional com os produtos frescos ao qual se junta as bancadas de comida gourmet e até alguns artistas como Richard Bramble cuja loiça com motivos marinos é já muito conhecida.

Yauatcha – Londres, Inglaterra

O Yauatcha foi uma recomendação de uma amiga antes de viajar a Londres que nos disse que era o melhor sitio para comer dim sum e decidimos ir ao que está no Soho na Broadwick street. Tem dois pisos e como fomos a um dia de semana fora dos horários normais de muita gente conseguimos logo mesa mas no piso de baixo onde podemos ver a cozinha. A decoração é moderna e talvez um pouco escura para o nosso gosto mas a excelente qualidade do dim sum vale mesmo a pena a visita e não é tão caro como pode parecer.

The Yauatcha was a recommendation from a friend before traveling to London, she told us it was the best place to eat dim sum and we decided to go to the one that is in Soho on Broadwick street. It has two floors and as we went on a week day out of the crowded hours we got a table right away but downstairs where we could see the kitchen. The decor is modern and maybe a bit dark for our taste but the excellent quality of the dim sum is worth the visit and not as expensive as it may seem.

Millenium Bridge – Londres, Inglaterra

Quisémos atravessar a mítica ponte do filme de Harry Potter (e o Enigma do Principe), desenhada por Norman Foster e criada para conectar as duas margens do rio Tâmisa, apenas para uso pedonal. Quando caminhas por ela não consegues ter a visão total do belo trabalho de design da ponte e foi por isso que chegando á margem sul fomos até ao piso panorâmico do Tate Modern. No ponto oposto está a Catedral de S. Paul que foi de onde saímos para atravessar a ponte.

We wanted to cross the mythical bridge of the Harry Potter film (and the Prince’s Enigma), designed by Norman Foster and created to connect the two banks of the Thames, for pedestrian use only. When you walk through it you can not get the full view of the beautiful design work of the bridge and that is why arriving to the south bank we went to the panoramic floor of the Tate Modern. O nosso segundo dia em Londres foi bastante intenso, tanto que decidi separa-lo em dois posts. E tudo começa com um bom pequeno-almoço na zona de Paddington (perto da estação) num café chamado Bonne Bouche onde comi um bom bagel e tomámos sumos naturais.

Our second day in London was pretty intense, so much so that I decided to split it into two posts. And it all starts with a good breakfast in the Paddington area (near the station) in a café called Bonne Bouche where I had a good bagel and natural juice.

London Trip Diary – Day 1

Chegámos a Londres utilizando o comboio que conecta o aeroporto e a estação de Paddington, dali foi uma caminhada tranquila até ao nosso hotel ou pelo menos ao que pensávamos que era o nosso e tivémos que ir bater á porta correcta: o Hotel Park Grand London Paddington.

We arrived in London using the train that connects the airport to the Paddington station, from there it was an easy 10 minute walk to our hotel or at least the one we thought was ours and then we had to go knock at the right door: the Park Grand London Paddington Hotel .
