O nosso segundo dia em Londres foi bastante intenso, tanto que decidi separa-lo em dois posts. E tudo começa com um bom pequeno-almoço na zona de Paddington (perto da estação) num café chamado Bonne Bouche onde comi um bom bagel e tomámos sumos naturais.
Our second day in London was pretty intense, so much so that I decided to split it into two posts. And it all starts with a good breakfast in the Paddington area (near the station) in a café called Bonne Bouche where I had a good bagel and natural juice.
Queríamos descer até Westminster e decidimos alugar umas bicicletas públicas conhecidas como as Santander Cycles, o processo é bastante simples basta seguir as instruções na docking station e utilizar o cartão de crédito. Além disso descargamos a aplicação para poder ter informação em directo de onde deixar a bicicleta ou recolher. O preço é de 2 libras por bicicleta com acesso 24 horas e meia hora grátis, se passas de esse tempo já se começa a pagar.
We wanted to go down to Westminster and decided to rent public bikes known as the Santander Cycles, the process is quite simple just follow the instructions on the docking station and use the credit card. In addition we downloaded the application to be able to have live feed of where to leave the bike or collect. The price is 2 pounds per bike with access 24 hours and half an hour free, if you spend more than this time you need to pay.
Fomos pelo Hyde Park descendo por uma paralela á Park Lane, aproveitámos para descobrir um pouco mais do parque encontrando a fonte da Joy of Life ou a estátua de Aquiles.
We went through Hyde Park down a parallel to Park Lane, we were able to discover a little more of the park by finding the fountain of the Joy of Life and the statue of Achilles.
Atravessámos a estrada até ao Arco de Wellington, construído no século XIX e conta com a tradicional quadriga na parte superior. Antes de entrar na Constitution Hill ainda passámos por alguns dos memorais que há junto ao arco como um dedicado ao Regimento de Artilheria da Primeira Guerra Mundial, entre outros.
We crossed the road to the Wellington Arch, built in the 19th century and has the traditional quadriga at the top. Before entering Constitution Hill we still passed some of the memorials that are close to the arch like one dedicated to the Artillery Regiment of World War I, among others.
Depois de muito pedalar chegámos á Great George Street e vemos o icónico Big Ben, sinal de que estamos já em Westminster. Não podíamos avançar muito bem porque havia uma prova de ciclismo que fechou uma boa parte das ruas do centro, levámos as bicicletas em mão á procura de um posto vazio para poder fazer um passeio pela zona a pé.
After much pedaling we arrived at Great George Street and see the iconic Big Ben, sign that we are already in Westminster. We could not advance any further because there was a cycling event that closed a lot of streets downtown, we took the bicycles in hand to look for an empty post so that we could walk the area on foot.
Só encontrámos num perto da St. John’s Smith Square e entrámos no bairro de Westminster. Andar de bicicleta tem de estas coisas, podes stressar porque não encontras um posto onde a queres deixar mas ter ido mais longe foi o melhor que nos aconteceu, andámos pelas ruas de este bairro apaixonados pelas casas e ainda encontrámos a que foi o lar de T.E. Lawrence mais conhecido como Lawrence da Arábia.
We only found one near St. John’s Smith Square and we entered the Westminster neighborhood. Cycling has these things, you can stress because you do not find a place where you want to leave but have gone further was the best that happened to us, we walked through the streets of this neighborhood in love with the houses and we still found the home of T.E. Lawrence better known as Lawrence of Arabia.
Voltámos ao Parlamento a pé, sentámo-nos num banco a aproveitar a vista e ainda vimos as noticias da manhã em directo da zona que estava a ser feita num pequeno jardim em frente.
We returned to Parliament on foot, sat on a bench enjoying the view, and still watched the morning news live from the area that they were being made in a small garden in front of the palace.
Decidimos voltar a caminhar e passámos pela Jewel Tower, parte do desaparecido Palácio de Westminster e foi construída no século XIV para guardar os tesouros do Rei Eduardo III. Seguimos até ver a Catedral de Westminster, ainda tentámos entrar mas a fila era interminável.
We decided to walk again and passed by the Jewel Tower, part of the missing Palace of Westminster and was built in the 14th century to guard the treasures of King Edward III. We continued to see Westminster Cathedral, still tried to get in but the queue was endless.
Decidimos visitar o museu Churchill War Rooms, uma extraordinária viagem ao passado para reviver uma parte da história da cidade e de como a 2ª Guerra Mundial a afectou. Faz parte do Museu Imperial de Guerra e funcionava como centro de decisão durante os bombardeios á cidade, aqui viveu Churchill durante esse período num pequeno e modesto quarto. Tudo debaixo da terra, sem ver a luz do dia e em pequenas divisões onde muitos trabalhavam para ajudar a travar a guerra.
We decided to visit the Churchill War Rooms museum, an extraordinary trip back in time to revive a part of the city’s history and how World War II affected it. It is part of the Imperial War Museum and served as a center of decision during the bombing of the city, here Churchill lived during this period in a small, modest room. Everything under the earth, without seeing the light of day and in small divisions where many worked to help end the war.
Caminhámos junto ao St. James Park e chegámos aos edificios dos Horse Guards, no seu interior está um museu dedicado aos soldados da cavalaria e tivémos sorte de ao entrar no pátio conseguir ver a mudança da guarda, uma das principais atrações de este local. Ao fim de semana e a uma determinada hora podemos ainda ver uma parada dos guardas, a que nós assistimos é a rotineira de mudança de guardas que ainda assim é feita com grande protocolo.
We walked alongside the St. James Park and reached the Horse Guards buildings, inside there is a museum dedicated to cavalry soldiers and we were lucky to enter the courtyard to see the change of the guard, one of the main attractions of this place. At the weekend and at a certain time we can still see a guard parade, the one we watched is the routine of changing guards that is still made with great protocol.
Entrámos na famosa Whitehall e foi um inferno atravessá-la por causa da tal prova de ciclismo, já não sabíamos o que fazer porque haviam filas enormes para poder atravessar e decidimos caminhar em direcção a Westminster até que encontrámos um “buraco” nas vedações e passámos clandestinamente. O objetivo era chegar até á Villiers street para almoçar e pelo caminho fomos parando para ver coisas interessantes como um monumento dedicado ao Royal Tank Regiment ou a casa do autor de Moby Dick, Herman Mellville.
We entered the famous Whitehall and it was hell to cross it because of a cycling event, we did not know what to do because there were huge queues to cross and we decided to walk towards Westminster until we found a “hole” in the fences and we passed clandestinely. The goal was to get to Villiers street for lunch and on the way we stopped to see interesting things like a monument dedicated to the Royal Tank Regiment or the home of Moby Dick’s author Herman Mellville.
Chegámos finalmente ao Herman Ze German ansiosos por provar os seus cachorros quentes com salchichas da Bavaria. Uma boa opção e algo económica para os preços de Londres. Este fica na Villiers Street uma estreita rua pedonal com edificios históricos e muita animação com os seus pubs e restaurantes.
We finally arrived at Herman Ze German eager to sample their hot dogs with Bavarian sausages. A good and somewhat economical option for London prices. This one is on Villiers Street a narrow pedestrian street with historic buildings and lots of entertainment with its pubs and restaurants.
