Continua o nosso relato do segundo dia em Londres (ver a primeira parte aqui) que começa com um passeio na Trafalgar Square. Uma homenagem á Batalha com o mesmo nome em que os ingleses sairam vitoriosos contra o exército de Napoleão. Um dos líderes está representado na Coluna de Nelson, em honra ao Almirante que liderou a Marinha Real Britânica. O dia era de sol e a praça estava cheia de gente, entre turistas e locais a aproveitar o seu bom ambiente.
O principal edificio da praça é o museu National Gallery fundado em 1824, com entrada grátis conta com colecções de pinturas que vão desde o século XV até ao XX. As suas duas fontes são outro dos símbolos da praça rodeadas de esculturas e estátuas dedicadas a importantes figuras da história do país, a mais relevante de todas será talvez a de George IV.
The main building of the square is the National Gallery Museum founded in 1824, with free admission with collections of paintings ranging from the fifteenth to the twentieth century. Its two fountains are another of the symbols of the square surrounded by sculptures and statues dedicated to important figures of the history of the country, the most relevant of all is perhaps the one of George IV.
Avançamos no nosso passeio até á Leicester Square, entrámos pela rua do hotel Hampshire fundado no século XIX e sobre o qual existem rumores de ter um fantasma. Esta animada praça dá lugar a salas de cinema, esplanadas e é também onde encontramos a loja M&M’s que já tinha visitado noutra ocasião e que recomendo porque é melhor que a de Nova Iorque (na minha opinião). Ainda aqui vimos as crianças a brincar aos pés da estátua de Shakespeare onde há uma fonte e ajudava a refrescar nesse dia de Verão.
Passamos de Mayfair para o Soho e entramos na Shaftsbury Avenue, a Broadway inglesa. O calor começou a apertar e decidimos procurar uma gelataria na zona, a escolha foi imediata e fomos á Gelupo. Com gelados de fabrico artesanal foi impossível resistir, cremosos e suaves. Provei dois dos meus favoritos de sempre Pistachio e Salted Caramel.
We passed from Mayfair to Soho and entered Shaftsbury Avenue, the English Broadway. The heat began to tighten and we decided to look for a icecream place in the area, the choice was immediate and we went to Gelupo. With homemade ice cream it was impossible to resist, creamy and soft. I tried two of my favorites Pistachio and Salted Caramel.
Com o estômago recomposto entrámos na Chinatown, esse pedaço da China na cidade repleto de restaurantes e lojas. Chamou-nos a atenção as bancadas de “streetfood” que realmente nos pareceu dar esse toque mais autêntico e não podiam faltar essas lojas de conveniência com produtos exclusivamente chineses.
With our stomachs fulled we turned into Chinatown, this piece of China in the city full of restaurants and shops. We were struck by the “streetfood” countertops that really seemed to give us the most authentic touch and we could not miss these convenience stores with exclusively Chinese products.
Tinha uma grande curiosidade para conhecer o mercado de Covent Garden e aproveitámos o passeio para passar por lá, sem grande agenda e já de estômago cheio foi só aproveitar o ambiente de este mercado onde se podem encontrar restaurantes como o do chef Jamie Oliver ou a famosa cadeia norte-americana de hamburguers, o Shake Shack. Á sua volta inúmeras lojas entre marcas conhecidas e outras que são novidade, para além das bancas que vendem artesanato, gravuras, livros, etc..
I had a great curiosity to know the market of Covent Garden and we took a walk to go there, without a big agenda and already with a full stomach we went only to enjoy the atmosphere of this market where you can find restaurants like the one of the chef Jamie Oliver or the famous American chain of hamburgers, the Shake Shack. Around it countless shops between well-known brands and others that are new, in addition to stalls that sell crafts, pictures, books, etc.
Seguimos depois em busca de bicicletas livres para começar o nosso percurso de regresso a casa, pelo caminho fomos vendo mais casas assinaladas com as placas que explicam o famoso que ali viveu. Chegámos a Westminster outra vez e parámos no pub The Greencoat Boy, sem muito mais a anotar, era um como tantos outros que chegámos a conhecer em Londres e onde bebemos uma cerveja para matar a sede.
We followed the search for free bikes to start our journey home, along the way we saw more houses marked with signs that explain the famous who lived there. We got to Westminster again and stopped at The Greencoat Boy pub, without much more to note, it was one like so many others we came to know in London and where we had a beer to quench thirst.
Chegámos ao bairro de Belgrave, um dos que te apetece ter uma casa mas que sabes que custam alguns milhões. Aqui encontrámos por acaso a Embaixada de Portugal e fomos contemplando a arquitetura da zona que tem a particularidade de ter a Wilton Crescent, muito á semelhança da famosa Royal Crescent em Bath.
We arrived in the Belgrave neighborhood, one of those that you want to have a house in but you know that costs a few million. Here we found the Embassy of Portugal by chance and contemplated the architecture of the area that has the particularity of having the Wilton Crescent, much like the famous Royal Crescent in Bath.
Já cansados apanhámos um autobus até ao nosso hotel em Paddington, também ele localizado num bairro cujas casas despertaram a nossa curiosidade. Como serão por dentro? Terminámos a noite no restaurante italiano Bizzarro perto do nosso hotel, fomos atendidos por um empregado português muito simpático e as pizzas eram bastante boas. O marido comeu um esparguete com marisco que gostou e foi uma boa escolha para terminar o nosso segundo dia em Londres.
Already tired we caught a bus to our hotel in Paddington, also located in a neighborhood whose houses got our curiosity. What do they look like inside? We ended the evening at the Italian restaurant Bizzarro near our hotel, we were attended by a very friendly Portuguese employee and the pizzas were quite good. My husband had a seafood spaghetti that he liked and it was a good choice to finish off our second day in London.
