Ao passar a Puerta del León passamos um portal de tempo que nos leva até á Idade Média e ao conjunto monumental da Seu Vella. A Catedral começa a ser construída em 1203 e é o próprio Rei de Aragão (D. Pedro II) que põe a primeira Pedra, é o edificio mais marcante do conjunto pela sua combinação de estilo arquitetónicos onde se destaca a torre do Campanário com sessenta metros de altura.

By passing the Puerta del León we feel like entering a portal of time that takes us until the Middle Ages and the monumental complex of Seu Vella. The Cathedral began to be built in 1203 and is the very King of Aragon (Pedro II) that sets the first stone, is the most striking building of the set for its combination of architectural style which highlights the tower belfry with sixty meters height. Lérida #1 – Espanha

Lérida não foi um amor á primeira vista. Fomos no segundo dia do ano, as ruas estavam vazias e quando nos perdíamos encontrávamos um lado B menos interessante e foi a Seu Vella que salvou o passeio. O principio prometia, começámos por almoçar numa taberna escondida que tinha uns caracóis maravilhosos e voltámos a pegar no carro para explorar o centro histórico.

Lleida was not a love at first sight. We were on the second day of the year, the streets were empty and when we got lost we found the less interesting B side of the city  and it was the Seu Vella who saved the tour. The start was quite positive, we began to have lunch in a hidden tavern that  had a wonderful snails dish and we again take the car to explore the historic center. Domingo de manhã quase a ponto de regressar a Espanha e depois de uma noite com uma boa carga água saiu o sol mais forte que nunca dando um bom motivo para um pequeno-almoço com vista para o mar. Esse é um dos privilégios de o fazer na Confeitaria que era igualmente o único sitio aberto ás dez da manhã na zona da Casa da Guia.

Sunday morning almost ready to return to Spain and after a night with a good load water came out the strongest sun never giving a good reason for a breakfast overlooking the sea. This is one of the privileges to do in Confectionery which was also the only place open at ten in the morning in the area of the Casa da Guia.

Bifanas de Vendas Novas – Portugal

São já muitos o quilómetros contabilizados nas nossas viagens entre Madrid – Lisboa (e volta) em todos eles passamos por Vendas Novas e só hoje ao final de cinco anos parámos para comer as suas famosas bifanas.  Recomendaram-nos o Café Boavista na Rua com o mesmo nome (na estrada nacional) e quase todos reclamam ter as originais mas estas estavam muito boas com o seu bife tenrinho, o seu sabor a vinha d’alho e o pão torrado.

There are already many kilometers recorded in our travels between Madrid – Lisbon (and back) in all of them we went through Vendas Novas and only now at the end of five years we stopped to eat their famous pork fillet sandwich. Boavista Café was recommend to us on a street with the same name (the national road) and almost all claim to have the original but these were very good with its tender steak, taste  of the wine and garlic sauce plus the toasted bread.

A expectativa para conhecer o British Museum era grande apesar do tempo disponível para o ver era limitado, aproveitámos para fazer a visita express com a ajuda do guia do próprio museu e em duas horas vimos o essencial. A sua idade mete respeito são mais de duzentos e sessenta anos a mostrar ao público alguns dos maiores tesouros arqueológicos do mundo. E é grátis. Sim…é grátis.

There was a great expectation to discover the British Museum despite the time available to see it was actually limited, we took the opportunity to do the express visit with the hekp of the museum’s own guide and in two hours we saw the essential. Its age demands your respect it is more than two hundred and sixty years showing the public some of the greatest archaeological treasures of the world. And it’s free. Yes … it’s free.

IGREJA DE SANTA CATARINA – VALÊNCIA, ESPANHA

O que mais surpreende na Igreja de Santa Catarina tem que ver com o Lado A e o Lado B das coisas, o Lado A com a sua discreta fachada gótica na Praça Lope de Vega faz pensar que é uma igreja como outra qualquer, mas o Lado B que está na Praça de la Reina tem uma torre de campanário construida no século XVII com o estilo da época, o barroco.

What is striking in the Church of Santa Catarina has to do with the A side and the B side of things, the Side A with its discreet Gothic facade in Lope de Vega square has you think it is a church like any other, but the Side B that is in the Plaza de la Reina has a bell tower built in the seventeenth century with the style of the era, the Baroque.
Não consegui fazer uma visita completa porque estavam a celebrar um casamento, deu para ter uma ideia do seu interior que mantém o estilo gótico apesar de ter sido reconstruída depois da Guerra Civil Espanhola. Sem grandes decorações são os vitrais que dão alguma cor a esta pequena igreja.
A torre, um dos símbolos da cidade, foi construída em 1705. Tem cerca de cinquenta e seis metros de altura e os sinos que estão no seu interior foram produzidos em Inglaterra.
I could not do a complete visit because they were celebrating a wedding, still you could get an idea of its interior that keeps the gothic style although it was rebuilt after the Spanish Civil War. Without great decorations the stained glass windows give some color to this little church. The Tower, a symbol of the city, was built in 1705. It has about fifty-six meters in height and the bells that are inside were manufactured in England.

IGREJA S. PIERRE E CEMITÉRIO – MONT ST-MICHEL, FRANÇA

A Igreja de S. Pierre está a meio caminho da Abadia e é fácil de encontrar graças á sua torre-relógio, confesso que o nome baralhou as minhas ideias porque á porta está uma estátua da Joana D’Arc e lá dentro destaca a estátua em prata do Arcanjo Miguel a quem está dedicada a Abadia, bom e a bem da verdade, todo o Monte. Havia poucos sinais de S. Pedro mas a verdade é que mesmo pequena a Igreja estava recheada de elementos interessantes.
 
The Church of St. Pierre is halfway to the Abbey and is easy to find thanks to its clock tower, I confess that the name shuffled my ideas because in the door is a statue of Joan of Arc and there stands the statue in silver Archangel Michael to whom the abbey is dedicated, and oh well to tell the truth, the whole Mount. There were few signs of St. Peter but the truth is that even small the church was full of interesting elements.

 
 
Originalmente construída no século XI, foi renovada nos séculos XV e XVI e da mesma altura são algunas esculturas como a da Virgem que está se destaca num pequeno altar. É outra das paragens obrigatórias dos peregrinos que prestam homenagem e descansam para ganhar fôlego para o que ainda falta para chegar até á Abadia. Ao lado está o cemitério, a última casa dos que ali vivem e onde podemos encontrar a campa da famosa Mère (Annette) Poulard (famosa pelas suas omoletes).
 
Originally built in the eleventh century, it was renovated in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and from the same time are the sculptures like the one from the Virgin that stands out in it’s a small altar. It’s another mandatory stop for the pilgrims on thei way to pay homage and rest for breath for what remains to get to the Abbey. Next door is the cemetery, the last home of those who live there and where we can find the grave of the famous Mère (Annette) Poulard (famous for its omoletes).

Castelo de Hohensalzburg – Salzburgo, Áustria

Assente no topo da colina de Festungsberg, esta fortaleza tem uma vista priveligiada para a cidade de Salzburgo que é um dos principais motivos pelos quais se deve visitá-la. A dimensão da sua estrutura impõe e surpreende quando fazes a visita ver como era inicialmente e toda a evolução que sofreu para se tornar num dos maiores castelos medievais da Europa.

Set on top of the Festungsberg hill, this fortress has a privileged view of the city of Salzburg which is one of the main reasons why one should visit it. The size of its structure imposes and surprises you when you make the visitor see how it was initially and all the evolution it has undergone to become one of the largest medieval castles in Europe.

Este lugar marcou para sempre a minha infância, se houvesse alguma história de princesas era este o palácio que eu imaginava, era no topo de uma das suas janelas que a Julieta suspirava pelo Romeo. Era de conto de fadas.
Tive a sorte de o visitar várias vezes e numa das minhas últimas idas a Portugal voltei a fazê-lo. Construído no século XIX, está aberto ao público como museu onde podemos ver peças que pertenciam aos Condes para além de uma exposição sobre a pré-história em Cascais. Dividi o post em dois, o primeiro será sobre o Palácio e o segundo sobre o Museu.
This place has forever marked my childhood, if there was any princess story this was the palace I imagined, it was at the top of one of his windows that Juliet sighed for Romeo. It was a fairy tale.
I was fortunate to visit it several times and in one of my last trips to Portugal I did it again. Built in the nineteenth century, it is open to the public as a museum where you can see pieces that belonged to the Counts in addition to an exhibit of the prehistory era in Cascais. I split the post into two, the first will be on the Palace and the second about the Museum.
