A Groenplaats ou a Praça Verde é uma das mais importantes da cidade e está no coração do seu centro histórico, não chegámos a perceber porque é que se chama Verde porque na realidade havia pouco arvoredo ou algo que se assemelhasse a um jardim que a fizesse ganhar esse nome.
Como chegámos de noite grande parte da visita a fizémos já o sol nos tinha deixado á muito mas nem por isso a praça perdeu o interesse, a Catedral iluminada e as decorações de Natal iam mantendo a animação.
The Groenplaats or Green Square is one of the most important in the city and is at the heart of its historic center, we arrived and could not understand why it is called Green because in reality there was little grove or something that resembled a garden that made it gain that name.
As we arrived at night much of the visit was made with the sun long gone but by no means the square lost interest, the illuminated Cathedral and the Christmas decorations were keeping the animation.

Catedral de Nossa Senhora – Antuérpia, Bélgica

A primeira vez que vimos a Catedral foi durante a noite, parecia ser a estrela de Antuérpia, alta e iluminada. Quando de manhã voltámos á mesma praça para a ver tinha outro encanto.
De estilo gótico, demorou cerca de 170 anos a ser construída e até aos dias de hoje não está completa. Nos planos originais estavam previstas duas torres mas completa só vemos uma com 123 metros de altura, a que está ao seu lado tem apenas 65 metros.
The first time we saw the Cathedral was during the night, seemed to be the star of Antwerp, high and full of light. In the morning we returned to the square will see had another charm.

BELFORT – BRUGES, BÉLGICA

Belfort ou Torre dos sinos é um dos símbolos da cidade e um dos monumentos mais importantes.
Não é dificil localizar a torre com os seus 83 metros de altura, ela é a principal atracção da praça de mercado. Se bem na altura que visitámos estava um pouco ofuscada pelo Mercado de Natal com uma pista de gelo ao centro e várias barraquinhas de comida ou de objectos adequados á temática e época do ano.
Belfort or Bell Tower is one of the symbols of the city and one of the most important monuments.It is not difficult to locate the tower with its 83 meters height, it is the main attraction of the market square. Although at the time we visited it was somewhat overshadowed by the Christmas market with an ice rink in the center and several food stalls or objects appropriate to the theme and time of year.

 
A sua construção teve inicio no século XIII mas só no século XV ganha mais altura adicionando a torre octagonal onde se pode ver o relógio. A torre está também equipada com um carrilhão com quarenta e sete sinos e um sino triunfal que estão ainda hoje em funcionamento. Antigamente eram utilizados para guiar o dia a dia dos habitantes de Bruges, assinalando as horas, momentos específicos do dia ou até funcionando como alarme em caso de um incêndio.
Its construction began in the thirteenth century but only in the fifteenth century earns more height adding the octagonal tower where you can see the clock. The tower is also equipped with a chime with fourty seven bells and a triumphal bell that are still in operation. Formerly used to guide the daily life of the inhabitants of Bruges, marking the hours, at specific times of the day or even functioning as alarm in case of fire.
Depois de ter subido o grande número de degraus para chegar ás torres da Sagrada Familia em Barcelona tinha dito que não repetiria a experiência porque o problema nem foi o subir foi o descer numa apertada escada de caracol que me deixou com uma lesão no joelho. Mas estar em Bruges e não subir até á sua Torre parecia um desperdicio da viagem, assim que estabelecemos um limite que se eu não conseguisse aguentar não subiria até ao topo, fazendo o total os 366 degraus.

After having climbed agreat number of steps to get to the towers of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona I had said I would not repeat the experience because the problem was not the climb it was coming down a narrow spiral staircase that left me with a knee injury. But being in Bruges and not go up to it’s tower seemed a waste of our trip, so we set a limit that if I could not bear I wouldn’t ascend to the top, making the total 366 steps.

Depois de subir uns trinta degraus chegámos até á Sala do Tesouro, onde para além de uma arca do tesouro encontrámos dois retratos pintados por Matthias de Visch, um deles o de George Dumery o homem a quem pediram para instalar os sinos do carrilhão. Diz-se também que na Torre se guardavam os direitos e os privilégios da cidade.
After climbing thirty steps we arrived to the Treasure Room, where in addition to a treasure chest we found two portraits painted by Matthias Visch, one of George Dumery the man asked to install the bells chime. It is also said that in the tower the rights and privileges of the city where stored. 




 
Os patamares seguintes levaram-nos até á sala do sino triunfal e mais acima do carrilhão, entre elas estava outra que mostrava o mecanismo do relógio.
The subsequent steps took us up to the room of the triumphant bell and above the carillon, among them was one that showed the watch mechanism.

Ao final dos 366 degraus encontramos a vista panorâmica da cidade mas a extremidade das medidas de segurança não deixam ver assim tão bem, na realidade as fotos que consegui tirar foi colocando a máquina através da rede porque esta não foi a vista completa que tivémos, uma pena é verdade mas entendemos o seu porquê.

At the end of 366 steps we found the panoramic views of the city but with the extreme security measures leave we couldn’t see so well, in fact I could only take photos putting the machine through the net because this was not the view that we had completed a shame but we understand your why.

Visitar a cidade a que chamam a Veneza do norte pode ser como refere o Lonely Planet uma experiência espantosa e ao mesmo tempo cheia de turistas e segundo eles um pouco…falsa! Não entendi bem esta referência, a verdade é que não vi nada de falso em Bruges pelo contrario. É verdade que estava cheia de gente o que não ajuda a tirar o melhor partido dela, mas e Veneza?
Eu achei Bruges “preciosa” como dizem os espanhóis e foi o melhor da nossa viagem de 4 dias onde estivémos em Bruxelas, Bruges, Antuérpia, Colónia e Luxemburgo (e Echternach).
 
Visiting the city they call the Venice of the north can be as Lonely Planet referred to a wonderful experience yet full of tourists and according to them a little … fake! I don’t quite understand this reference, the truth is haven’t seen anything false in Bruges on the contrar. It is true that it was crowded and it doesn’t help much but what about Venice?
I tought it was great and the highlight of our 4 days trip where we went to Brussels, Bruges, Antwerp, Koln and Luxembourg (and Echternach).

E creio que o que lhe confere tanto encanto e beleza, para além das lojas e cafés que dão vontade de entrar em todas, são os canais. Com uma presença mais discreta que em Veneza é certo mas quando os vemos não podemos deixar de parar, tirar uma foto e apoiar os braços num parapeito para ficar ali apenas a…disfrutar.
Acredito que sejam eles que podem compensar a agitação provocada pelos grande aglomerados de gente, por minutos contemplamos só aquela paisagem e esquecemos que umas dezenas se acotovelam atrás para tentar roubar o nosso lugar.
 
And I think what gives it so much charm and beauty, beyond the shops and cafes that make us want to indulge in all, are the channels. With a presence more discreet than Venice but when we see them you can not help but stop, take a picture and put your arms to a windowsill and just stand there … enjoy.
I believe they are those who can compensate for the agitation caused by large clusters of people, for minutes you can contemplate the landscape and forget that tens jostle to try to steal our place.
 
Faltou um dia mais solarengo para realçar ainda mais a beleza da cidade mas no Inverno não podemos pedir muito e até tivémos sorte porque não choveu.
Há possibilidade de explorar os canais de barco, há alguns operadores e creio que todos saiem mais ou menos do mesmo sitio mas as filas são realmente proibitivas e se todos os guias dizem que é “indispensável” quando vimos os barcos cheios de gente que estava sentada de forma tão apertada para rentabilizar a viagem levou-nos a pensar até que ponto iríamos mesmo disfrutar do passeio. 
 
A sunny day was missing to further highlight the beauty of the city but in the winter we can not ask for much, and we were even lucky because it didn’t rain.
There is the possibility of exploring the canals by boat, there are some operators and I believe all come out more or less of the same place but the queues are really prohibitive and if all of the guides say it is “essential“ when we saw the boats full of people who sat so tight to monetize the trip led us to think how far we would even enjoy the ride.
Ficámos em terra e não houve grande arrependimento, talvez numa próxima visita com um dia de sol e tentando marcar com antecipação.
 
We stayed on the ground and there was no great regret, perhaps a future visit with a sunny day and trying to book ahead.

Para mim uma das curiosidades de Bruxelas foi a quantidade de centros ou galerias comerciais que se criaram em passagem dentro de prédios. É uma maneira interessante de atravessar uma rua sem ter que ir dar a volta a um quarteirão, é mais abrigado e ainda para mais podemos ver montras.
Estas em particular foram construídas com o objectivo de dar uma passagem alternativa ás ruas sinuosas e ruidosas da cidade. Neste caso o luxo está presente não só no seu trabalho de arquitectura como também no tipo de lojas que oferece.
For me one of the curiosities of Brussels was the number of centers or shopping arcades that were created in the passage within buildings. It’s an interesting way to cross the street without having to go around a city block, is more sheltered and mostly we can see the shop windows.
These in particular were built with the aim of providing an alternative passage winding streets and noisy city. In this case the luxury is present not only in his architectural work but also the types of stores that it offers.

GRASMARKT – BRUXELAS, BÉLGICA

Também conhecida pela Rue du Marché Aux Herbes é uma animada rua comercial que fica a dois passos da Grand Place.
Aqui não encontramos as Zaras nem as H&M, as lojas são mais pequenas mas muito apelativas. Há também alguns restaurantes na rua e claro não podiam faltar as chocolatarias que vendem os famosos chocolates da região.
Also known by the Rue du Marché aux Herbes is a lively shopping street which is within walking distance of the Grand Place.
Here we won’t find the Zaras or the H&M the stores are smaller but very appealing. There are also a few restaurants on the street and of course one could not miss the famous chocolatiers selling the chocolates in the region.

Para passar uma noite em Bruxelas escolhemos o hotel NH Atlanta na Boulevard Adolf Max que ficava a uns dez minutos a pé da famosa Grand Place. Na realidade não podemos falar muito sobre este hotel porque ficámos muito pouco tempo hospedados, chegámos da estação de comboios deixámos a mala e fomos conhecer a cidade.
 
To spend a night in Brussels we chose the NH Atlanta on the Adolf Max Boulevard which was about ten minutes walk from the famous Grand Place. In reality we can not talk much about this hotel because we stayed for a short time, we reached the train station we left the suitcase there and went around the city.

O nosso quarto era grande e confortável, não gostei muito da decoração do hotel mas não seria por isso que eu deixaria de ficar aqui outra vez. Como a cadeia é espanhola na recepção sempre há alguém que fala o idioma se bem que para os que falam inglês por exemplo é indiferente, suponho que os espanhóis valorizem muito mais este aspecto.
O quarto ficou por 70€ a noite e sem pequeno-almoço, como fica numa rua de comércio e restaurantes encontrámos com facilidade um sitio barato para comer.
 
Our room was large and comfortable, I did not like the decor of the hotel but it would not give us a reason not to stay here again. As the chain is spanish in the reception there is always someone who speaks the language well to those who speak English for example it does not matter, I suppose the Spaniards value more this aspect.
The room was € 70 per night without breakfast, as is a street of shops and restaurants easily found a place to eat cheap.

A Rue des Bouchers é talvez a mais conhecida de Bruxelas para encontrar um restaurante e comer as famosas “moules” (mexilhão), como em tudo tem pontos positivos e pontos negativos. A estreita rua enche-se de turistas e os restaurantes expõem nas suas montras o seu marisco, colocando empregados a “venderem” a ementa. Não começamos bem, diz a regra que se tem que te chamar para comer é porque alguma coisa se passará…
The Rue des Bouchers is perhaps the best known from Brussels to find a restaurant and eat the famous “moules” (mussels), as in everything it has positives and negatives. The narrow street is filled with tourists and restaurants display in the Windows their seafood, putting their employees to “sell” the menu. This did not start well, the rule says that if one has to call you to eat it’s because something is wrong …

MANNEKEN PIS – BRUXELAS, BÉLGICA

Também conhecido por Petit Julien, o Manneken Pis é um fenómeno e um símbolo da Bélgica. A verdade é que custa a acreditar que uma escultura de pouco mais de 30cm de um menino a fazer xixi pudesse ter tanto impacto na cultura de um país. E digam o que disserem sobre o seu tamanho a verdade é que uma vez em Bruxelas é indispensável vê-lo pelo menos uma vez.
Also known as Petit Julien, the Manneken Pis is a phenomenon and a symbol of Belgium. The truth is that is hard to believe that a sculpture of a little more than 30cm from a boy making pee could have such impact on the culture of a country. And say what you will about his size the truth is that once in Brussels it’s essential to see him at least once.

Na fase de planeamento da nossa curta viagem á Bélgica (mais para ver os mercados de Natal) fomos ouvindo várias opiniões que diziam que Bruxelas não tinha grande interesse (“É feia” – ouvi até) e para nos centrarmos em Bruges e Ghent. Tenho cá para mim que não há cidades feias ou desinteressantes mas sim experiências dentro delas que marcam a nossa opinião. Bruxelas é uma cidade bonita, á sua maneira e a percepção de beleza vai da mão (e do olhar) de cada um.

At the planning stage of our short trip to Belgium ( to see the Christmas markets) we were listening to various opinions that said Brussels had no great interest (“It’s ugly” – I heard) and we focus in Bruges and Ghent. I have to myself that there are no ugly cities or uninteresting but experiences within them that mark our opinion. Brussels is a beautiful city, in it’s own way and the perception of beauty goes of the taste (and look) of each individual.
