Estávamos á procura do melhor sitio na praça para nos sentarmos (no chão) quando do Palazzo Pubblico começam a sair os “alfieri” (porta bandeiras) acompanhados por outros que tocavam tambores. Assim do nada, sem avisar.  Cada grupo representava uma Contrada (bairro) exibindo orgulhosamente os seus símbolos ou brasões caminhando pela praça até que os deixámos de ver. Ao principio achei que seria uma mudança da guarda mas nunca mais vinha os substitutos.

We were searching for the best place to sit in the square (on the ground) when from the Palazzo Pubblico begin to leave the “alfieri” (port flags) came out accompanied by others who played drums. Just like that, without warning. Each group represented a Contrada (ward) proudly displaying their symbols or coats walking through the square until we no longer see. At first I thought it would be a changing of the guard but the substitutes never came.

Pizza’ – Florença, Itália

Passeávamos pela Via dei Calzaiuoli rumo ao Duomo quando encontrámos esta pizzaria com o (original) nome de pizzÁ. Na altura havia uma grande fila e se tivéssemos passado a outra hora que não a do lanche teríamos entrado para comer.
No dia seguinte tínhamos que comer rápido porque tínhamos a visita da Galeria Uffizi e voltámos aqui. Há porta dois anuncios antigos de uma marca de cerveja italiana (a Poretti) dão as boas vindas.
We walked down Via dei Calzaiuoli towards the Duomo when we found this pizzaria with the (original) name of pizzÁ. At the time there was a big queue and if we had passed by it in another hour tan the snack time we would have entered to eat.
The next day we had to eat fast because we had to visit the Uffizi Gallery and we came back here. At the door there are two vintage ads for a brand of Italian beer (the Poretti) to welcome you.

Galeria Uffizi – Florença, Itália

Este era o museu que queria ver. Botticelli, Da Vinci, Caravaggio, Raphael e Verrocchio todos debaixo do mesmo tecto é de facto um privilégio. Tal era a ansiedade que tentámos entrar mais cedo como na Accademia mas a Uffizi exige que se respeite a hora da marcação. Ainda bem que comprámos os bilhetes online porque as filas eram de desesperar mas vale muito a pena.
This was the museum that I wanted to see. Botticelli, Da Vinci, Caravaggio, Raphael and Verrocchio all under one roof is indeed a privilege. Such was the anxiety that we tried to get in early as we did in the Accademia but the Uffizi requires you to respect the appointment time. Glad we bought the tickets online because the queues were desperate but well worth it.

Piazza della Signoria – Florença, Itália

Passámos pela Ponte Vecchio e caminhávamos em direcção ao Duomo quando ao olhar para uma rua á direita a torre do Palácio Vecchio se foi revelando, chegámos á Piazza della Signoria. Parece um museu ao ar livre, por todo o lado vemos estátuas que podemos apreciar sem pagar bilhete, é certo que grande parte são réplicas mas se não tens tempo de ver o David na Accademia podes ver aquí ainda que numa versão menos detalhada.
We passed through the Ponte Vecchio and walked towards the Duomo when looking into a street to the right the tower of the Palace Vecchio was revealing itself we had reached Piazza della Signoria. Looks like an open air museum, everywhere we see statues that we can enjoy without paying, it is certain that most are replicas but if you do not have time to see the David at the Accademia you can see here even if it is a less detailed version.

Cantinetta dei Verrazzano – Florença, Itália

Antes mesmo de chegar a Florença já levava na lista comer na Cantinetta dei Verrazzano. Por todo o lado diziam que tinham as melhores focaccia da cidade e tínhamos que provar. Quando entrámos estava cheio, ao fundo vimos o forno de onde saiam as maravilhosas foccacias e procurámos mesa. Parecia tarefa difícil mas numa pequena salinha com mesas de madeira e tampo de mármore conseguimos um lugar. Pedimos um misto de focaccias, o marido pediu um copo de vinho porque Cantinetta quer dizer pequena adega e Verrazzano é o nome do Castelo na Toscana de onde sai o vinho que ali se vende.
Before we even get to Florence we had in the list to eat in the Cantinetta dei Verrazzano. Everywhere we read they had the best focaccia in town and had to taste it. When we entered it was full, we saw at the end the furnace where the wonderful foccacias come out and we looked for a table. Seemed difficult task but we got a place in a small sitting room with wooden tables topped with marble. We ordered a mixed of focaccias, my husband asked for a glass of wine because Cantinetta means small winery and is the name of the Verrazzano Castle in Tuscany where the wine that they sell here comes from.

Orsanmichele – Florença, Itália

Passeávamos pela Via Cazaiuoli vendo as montras quando o edificio de Orsanmichele nos chamou a atenção. Foi apenas no terceiro dia da nossa estadia a Florença que a visitámos sem saber muito bem o que era até percebermos que era uma igreja. Também a entrada foi difícil de perceber onde era, pensávamos que era pela Via onde passeávamos antes mas tivémos que contornar a igreja para entrar.
Dentro podemos contemplar o tabernáculo criado por Andrea Orcagna de 1459 com cenas da Virgem.
We walked the Via Cazaiuoli window shopping when the building of Orsanmichele caught our attention. It was only the third day of our stay in Florence that we visited without really knowing what it was until we realized that it was a church. Also the entrance was hard to tell where it was, we tought it was in Via where we walked before but we had to go around the church to get in.
Inside we can admire the tabernacle created by Andrea Orcagna 1459 with scenes of the Virgin.

Basílica Santa Maria Novella – Florença, Itália

Regresso aos posts sobre Florença, ainda tenho muito mais que contar sobre esta cidade. Queria muito escrever sobre esta basílica porque foi a minha igreja preferida e mesmo ao editar as fotos tinha os pelos em pé ao reviver a sensação de a ter visitado. O Duomo é fantástico por fora mas Santa Maria Novella não tendo a mesma dimensão e grandeza exterior, esconde no seu interior autênticas riquezas que o interior do Duomo jamais conseguirá alcançar.

I return to the posts about Florence, I still have much more to tell about this city. I really wanted to write about this basilica because it was my favorite church and even as I was editing the potos I was thrilled to relive the feeling of having visited it.
The Duomo is fantastic on outside but Santa Maria Novella although it doesn’t have the same size and grandeur exterior, hides inside  riches that the interior of the Duomo will never be able to achieve.

Galeria Dell’Accademia – Florença, Itália

Depois de ler alguns guias sobre Florença, a primeira coisa que fiz foi marcar dois museus, o de Uffizi e este Dell’Accademia. Este último para poder contemplar a grandiosa obra de Michelangelo, David.
Como não sabíamos muito bem como funcionavam as reservas, se tínhamos que ir antes levantar os bilhetes se íamos á hora marcada resolvemos espreitar e tivémos sorte, tínhamos visita para as 14h e acabámos por entrar ás 12h. Vale a pena reservar porque entras á frente de todos os grupos de visita e todos os que não anteciparam a compra dos bilhetes.
After reading some guides about Florence, the first thing I did was book two museums in advance, the Uffizi and this Dell’Accademia. The latter was to be able to admire the great work of Michelangelo, David.
As we did not know very well how the reservation worked, if we had to go before to get the tickets if we were peering at the scheduled time and decided to take a look so we were lucky, we had to visit it at 14h and we were able to get in at 12h. It’s worth booking ahead as you enter before all visiting groups and those who did not anticipate the purchase of tickets.

Brown Sugar Lounge Bar – Florença, Itália

No nosso primeiro dia em Florença jantámos no Brown Sugar. Foi daquelas decisões de impulso que tínhamos jurado não tomar depois de ter tido alguma má experiência, mas aconteceu depois de termos duas recomendações de restaurante que não resultaram: o primeiro estava fechado e o segundo estava em obras. Na zona estava este que dizia ter massa fresca e decidimos experimentar.
On our first day in Florence we had dinner at Brown Sugar. It was those impulse decisions that we had sworn not to take after we have had a bad experience, but it happened after two of restaurant recommendations that didn’t work out: the first was closed and the second was in the works. In this area there was this one that said it had fresh pasta and we decided to try.

Batistério de S. João – Florença, Itália

O que mais me impressiona neste conjunto arquitectónico do Duomo, do Campanario de Giotto e do Batistério são os detalhes, uma janela é decorada com uma moldura de mármore de duas cores e uma porta tem relevos históricos. No caso do batistério as Portas de Ghiberti são dignas de visita e nem tens que pagar para vê-las porque estão do lado de fora mesmo em frente á entrada do Duomo.
What impresses me most about this architectural ensemble of the Duomo, together with the Giotto’s Bell Tower and the Baptistery are the details, a window frame is decorated with a marble in two colors and a door has historical reliefs. In the case of the baptistery the Ghiberti doors are worth visiting and one doesn’t have to pay to see them because they are outside  in front of the Duomo’s main entrance.
