Uma das ruas mais animadas de Vitoria é a Eduardo Dato, é peatonal o que garante a tranquilidade do passeio e permite aproveitar mais de este pequeno centro comercial ao ar livre. Faz a ligação entre a Plaza Nova e a estação de comboio com uma variada oferta de lojas, bares e restaurantes para além de bonitos e elegantes edificios.
One of the liveliest streets of Vitoria is the Eduardo Dato, is pedestrian ensuring the tranquility of the stroll and lets you take advantage of this small shopping center outdoors. It links the New Plaza and the train station offering a variety of shops, bars and restaurants as well as beautiful and elegant buildings.

Aqui podemos encontrar o bar Saburdi um dos melhores bares de Vitoria muito famoso pelos seus “pintxos”.  Pela rua encontramos também algumas esculturas e estátua interessantes como a do caminhante ou a do toureiro também conhecida como El Minotauro. Outras curiosidades é a loja de bonecas de colecção da Imaginarium que vende a mitica boneca espanhola: Mariquita Perez e uma casa de cupcakes que se chama Humm.

Here we can find the Saburdi bar one of the best bars of Vitoria very famous for it’s “pintxos”. In this street you can also find some interesting sculptures and statues like the walker or the bullfighter also known as El Minotaur. Other curiosities, the collection dolls shop by Imaginarium that sells the mythical Spanish doll: Mariquita Perez and a house of cupcakes called Humm.

PLAZA DE ESPANHA – VITORIA, ESPANHA

Ou Plaza Nueva, ou se recebesse o nome mais comum para este tipo de praça seria Plaza Mayor. Foi desenhada pelo mesmo arquiteto do projeto dos Arquillos, Justo Antonio de Olaguíbel. O seu estilo neoclássico com elegantes arcadas tem ao centro o edificio do Ayuntamiento e a sua Oficina de Turismo, fomos no Inverno e não estava tão animada mas imagino que no Verão com os seus vários bares de pintxo e esplanadas será ainda mais agradável.
 
Or Plaza Nueva, or if it were to receive the most common name for this type of square it would be Plaza Mayor. It was designed by the same architect of the project Arquillos, Justo Antonio de Olaguíbel. Its neoclassical style with elegant arcades have to center the building of the Ayuntamiento and its Oficina de Turismo, we went in the winter and it was not so lively but I imagine in the summer with its many pintxo bars and terraces it would be even more enjoyable.

O nome de Plaza Nueva compara com o de uma Praça mais antiga, a Plaza de la Virgen Blanca que tem ligação através das arcadas da zona oeste. Mantendo algumas tradições vivas, ainda nos dias de hoje podemos ver aqui um mercado, um deles que se celebra ao Domingo é de antiguidades e artigos de coleccionismo.
 
The name of Plaza Nueva compares with an older square, Plaza de la Virgen Blanca which is connected through the west side of the arcades. Keeping some traditions alive, even today we can see here a market, one that is celebrated on Sunday sells antiques and collectors items.

RESTAURANTE XIXILU – VITORIA, ESPANHA

O Xixilu foi uma das (muitas) recomendações que nos deu a recepcionista do nosso hotel. Disse que era um lugar para comer bem e mais barato que os demais porque em Vitoria o ideal é esquecer as calorias e a carteira. Reservámos mesa e ainda bem que o fizemos porque quando voltámos estava cheio de gente tanto dentro como fora. Tem uma excelente “barra” de pintxos que decidimos provar na mesa.
Xixilu was one of the (many) recommendations that the receptionist of our hotel gave us. She said it was a place to eat well and cheaper than the others because in Vitoria the best thing is to forget the calories and the wallet. We have reserved a table and thankfully we did because when we returned it was full of people both inside and outside. Has a great “pintxos” bar but we decided to try on the table.

O mais destacável dos Arquillos é que separam a zona do centro histórico da cidade moderna, foram construídos num momento de grande expansão de Vitória Gasteiz no final do século XVIII e pela mão de um arquiteto local, Justo Antonio de Olaguíbel. Dizem que foram construídos para salvar o desnivel da cidade medieval que se expandia para lá das suas muralhas. Eu achei que a pesar da sua simplicidade era um sitio especial, tranquilo onde podes dar um pequeno passeio sem pensar em mais nada.
 
The most outstanding of the Arquillos is that it separates the area of the historic center of the modern city, it was built in a time of great expansion of Vitoria Gasteiz in the late eighteenth century and by the hand of a local architect, Justo Antonio de Olaguíbel. They say it was built to save the unevenness of the medieval city that was expanding beyond its walls. I found that in spite of its simplicity it was quite a special place, quiet where you can take a short walk without thinking of anything else.

Divide-se em duas zonas, uma que está perto da encosta de San Francisco e a outra junto á Igreja de San Vicente, na zona traseira está a Plaza de Machete onde se podem encontrar alguns restaurantes recomendados como o Matxete. Nos edificios dos Arquillos instalaram-se casas e alguns oficios, neste momento tem um Bed & Breakfast com muito charme: a Casa dos Arquillos.
 
It is divided into two area, one that is close to the slope of San Francisco and the other near the Church of San Vicente, in the back area is the Plaza de Machete where you can find some recommended restaurants such as Matxete. In the buildings of the Arquillos there were homes and some shops, currently it has a B & B with lots of charm: the Casa dos Arquillos.

Aqui começa a vida em Vitoria, na praça da Virgem Branca e como fomos nos primeiros dias de este ano ainda mais porque estava montada ao centro uma pista de gelo para além de outras actividades interessantes principalmente para as crianças. Chama a atenção a estátua dedicada á Batalha de Vitoria de 1803, onde as tropas aliadas (Espanha e Inglaterra) venceram as tropas francesas lideradas por José Bonaparte que ocupavam o país nessa altura.
Here begins life in Vitoria, in the White Virgin (Virgen Blanca) square and as we were at the beginning of this year it’s even more lively because it had at the center  an ice rink as well as other interesting activities especially for children. Draws attention the statue dedicated to the Battle of Vitoria, 1803, where the allied troops (Spain and England) won the French troops led by Joseph Bonaparte who occupied the country at that time.

A primeira Chinatown que conheci foi em Londres, creio que já passaram uns vinte anos desde essa visita e tinha muita curiosidade para conhecer a de Nova Iorque. Ao contrário do que me lembrava de Londres, não vi os grandes (e dramáticos) arcos – o paifang – ou as ruas decoradas com os candeeiros vermelhos, a verdade é que Chinatown foi conquistando prédio a prédio Little Italy e o que nos indica que ali chegámos é a caótica disposição dos letreiros em chinês dos vários comércios que ali se instalaram.

 
The first Chinatown I met was in London, I believe it is past twenty years since that visit and I was very curious to discover the one in New York. Contrary to what I remembered of the one in London, I did not see the big (and dramatic) arcs – paifang – or the streets decorated with red lamps, the truth is that Chinatown was winning building to building Little Italy and what tells us that we have reached it is the chaotic arrangement of Chinese signs of the various trades that settled there.

Ponte de Brooklyn – Nova Iorque, EUA

A ponte que juntou Brooklyn a Manhattan demorou cerca de dezasseis anos a ser construída e abriu em 1883. Tem mais de cento e trinta anos de história e uma das mais notáveis foi a da morte do seu criador John Augustus Roebling antes de começar a construção. É outro dos símbolos da cidade que não podíamos deixar de visitar mas não tínhamos muito tempo para ver Brooklyn por isso fomos de metro e voltámos a pé pela ponte até Manhattan.
The bridge that joined Brooklyn to Manhattan took about sixteen years to build and opened in 1883. It has over one hundred and thirty years of history and one of the most notable was the death of its creator John Augustus Roebling before the construction start. It is another symbol of the city that we could not fail to visit but did not have much time to see Brooklyn so we went by underground and come back walking across the bridge towards Manhattan.

THE MAGNOLIA BAKERY – NOVA IORQUE, EUA

Não podíamos deixar de entrar na Magnolia Bakery depois de ter visitado a Carrie no 66 da Perry Street. Falta o banquinho onde ela se sentou com a Miranda a comer um dos seus deliciosos cupcakes mas na realidade comer um é tão rápido que nem precisamos. A decoração do Magnolia é simples e acolhedora, o que realmente chama a atenção nesta pequena loja é a sua montra de bolos e cupcakes cuja variedade me fez ficar indecisa.
 
We had to enter the Magnolia Bakery after visiting Carrie at 66 Perry Street. They don’t have the stool where she sat with Miranda to eat one of their delicious cupcakes but actually eating one is so fast that there is no need. The decor of the Magnolia is simple and warm, what really draws attention in this small shop is its cakes and cupcakes window in such a variety that made me hesitant.

Depois de dar algumas voltas á cabeça acabámos por escolher o Carrot e o de Pistachio, tenho que admitir que são bons mas não os melhores que já comi. Creio que um dos seus pontos fortes é a madalena por baixo da cobertura, esponjosa e saborosa para além da sua variedade de “toppings”. Cada cupcake custa 3,5€.
Para os que preferem outras opções, qualquer um dos seus bolos para vender á fatia tinha óptimo aspecto, havia de cenoura, Red velvet, chocolate, etc..
 
After thinking a lot about it we ended up choosing the Carrot and Pistachio,I have to admit that are good but not the best I have ever eaten. I believe one of its strengths is the cake under the icing, spongy and tasty in addition to a good variety of “toppings“. Each cupcake costs € 3.5.
For those who prefer other options, any of their cakes they sell in slices look good, they had carrot, red velvet, chocolate, etc ..

Eu confesso: vivi durante algum tempo a obsessão da série Sexo e a Cidade. Confesso. E sei que não sou a única, sei que há mais gente que comprou a box set em DVD, que quando chega o Inverno e não podemos pôr um dedinho fora de casa fazemos maratona de episódios, que ainda hoje nos lembramos de algumas cenas. Também confesso que o objectivo da minha visita á Perry Street foi para tirar a típica foto á porta da “casa” da Carrie Bradshaw e sentir que ela (ou melhor a Sarah Jessica Parker) ali passou, reviver as cenas onde ela se sentava com o Big, ou ficava sozinha a fumar embrulhada nos seus pensamentos. Mas a Perry Street enamora…e muito, quase sem necessitar de uma famosa fachada. 
 
I confess: I lived for some time  with an obsession for the Sex and the City series. I confess. And I know I‘m not the only one, I know there are more people who bought the DVD box set, that when winter arrives and we can not put a finger out of the house we make an episode marathon, that still today we remember some scenes. Also confess that the purpose of my visit to Perry Street was to take the typical photo at the door of the Carrie Bradshaw’s “house“  and feel that she (or rather Sarah Jessica Parker) was there, relive the scenes where she sat with Big, or was alone to smoke wrapped in her thoughts. But Perry Street makes you fall in love … and, almost without requiring a famous facade.

A primeira coisa importante a saber é que a casa é no número 66, aliás é fácil identificá-la porque é a única que está vedada para não tirar fotos nos degraus. Posso dizer que não é das mais bonitas do bairro mas é sem dúvida a mais famosa e concorrida. Ao lado está o 64 que aparece em alguns sites como sendo a casa da Carrie, na realidade esteve para ser mas nunca aconteceu. Esta zona do West Village é daquelas onde sonhas viver, onde Nova Iorque deixa de ser arranha-céus e mostra a sua cara mais romântica com estas casas em “brownstone” construídas no século XIX, numa época em que eram um formato mais económico de construção mas hoje uma casa aqui pode custar dez milhões de dólares. 
 
The first important thing to know is that the house is number 66, which by the way is easy to spot because it is the one that is sealed so you do not take pictures on the steps. I can say that is not the most beautiful in the neighborhood but it is certainly the most famous and crowded. Next door is the 64 that appears on some websites as being the home of Carrie actually it was going to be but never happened. This West Village area is one of those where you dream to live, where New York is no longer  made of skyscrapers and shows its most romantic face with these brownstone houses built in the nineteenth century, at a time when they were a more economical format of building but today a house here can cost ten million dollars.

Quando me perguntam qual gostei mais: Empire State Building Observation Deck ou o Top of the Rock, fico realmente na dúvida. Se me pedem uma recomendação para visitar e só podes ver um, diria o último mas o ESB tem outro encanto, não é apenas um dos edificios mais altos de Nova Iorque é também uma estrela de cinema que brilhou em filmes como o King Kong e Sleepless in Seattle. O importante é entender o valor que a visita pode ter para cada um, no nosso caso queríamos mesmo ir e por isso reservámos os bilhetes (com pass express) antes escapando ás longas (e exasperantes) filas.
 
When people ask me what I liked most: Empire State Building Observation Deck or Top of the Rock, I am really in doubt. If they ask me a recommendation of which one to visit if you can only see one, I would say the last but the ESB has another charm, is not only one of the tallest buildings in New York is also a movie star that shone in films like King Kong and Sleepless in Seattle. The important thing is to understand the value the visit may have for you, in our case we really wanted to go so we have pre-booked the tickets (with express pass) before, escaping the long (and infuriating) queues.

Um imponente exemplo de Art Déco, foi inaugurado em 1931 e tem cerca trezentos e oitenta metros de altura sem contar com a antena. A entrada com bilhete express custa cerca de $50 (+ $2 de gastos de gestão) e passámos á frente de toda a gente, valeu a pena porque a hora do pôr do sol é das mais concorridas. Já no Observation Deck foi simplesmente aproveitar a vista sobre a cidade, de repente tudo o resto parecia muito pequeno, os edificios que eu achava altos na Quinta Avenida são casas de brincar. Graças á sua vista 360º vemos muito da cidade, o One World Trade Center, o Chrysler Building, o Rockfeller Center, o Flatiron, Brooklyn, New Jersey e só não vemos o Central Park porque está um pouco longe.
