Os planos de este fim de semana incluiam um almoço com amigos em Torrecaballeros no restaurante La Portada del Mediodia com mesa reservada e cordeiro encomendado. Aproveitámos a viagem de uma hora a partir de nossa casa para visitar algum castelo nos arredores e fazer uma caça ao tesouro que encontrámos no Castelo de Turégano a uns vinte cinco minutos do restaurante. 
Por fora La Portada parece pequeno mas uma vez lá dentro é um mundo com várias salas de decoração rústica, vigas de madeira nos tectos e com um sotão muito agradável.

The plans for this weekend included a lunch with friends in Torrecaballeros at La Portada del Mediodia with reserved table and ordered lamb. We took advantage of the one hour trip from our home to visit a castle around this area and do a treasure hunt that we found in the Castle Turégano about twenty five minutes from the restaurant. 
From the outside La Portada looks small but once inside there is a world of several rooms with a rustic décor , wooden beams on the ceilings and a very nice loft.

Na zona o que mais se vê são restaurantes de “horno a leña” com especialidades como o cabrito, o cordeiro e o leitão. Enquanto esperávamos os nossos amigos pediram “picadillo de matanza” (de porco) com batatas e ovo e também um frango a “ajillo” com pimentos assados. Tudo óptimo. 
Depois veio o parto principal que era o cordeiro assado no forno, de excelente qualidade (e eu não sou a maior apreciadora de cordeiro). Não sei como mas alguns de nós ainda teve espaço para sobremesa, eu pedi um Vulcão de chocolate que infelizmente veio um pouco mais passado o que significa que ao abrir não saiu chocolate derretido e faltou algo que lhe cortasse o sabor intenso, talvez umas natas ou uma bola de gelado. Com o café vieram também uns bolinhos da região.

In the area you see that most restaurants are of “horno the leña” (wooden oven) with specialties like goat, lamb and suckling pig. While we waited our friends ordered the “picadillo de matanza” (pork) with potatoes and egg and also a chicken “ajillo” with roasted peppers. Everything was fine. 
Then came the main dish that was the roast lamb, excellent quality (and I’m not the biggest admirer of lamb). Do not know how but some of us still had room for dessert, I ordered a chocolate volcano which unfortunately came a little done which means that while opening it did not had the melted chocolate and missed something that would cut the intense flavor, maybe a cream or a scoop of ice cream. With coffee came cakes from the region.

No final a conta foi um pouco dolorosa, foi dos restaurantes mais caros onde comi e creio que foi responsabilidade nossa principalmente na parte das entradas que não eram baratas. O almoço começou ás três da tarde e só nos fomos embora ás seis. 
Ao sair reparámos nas imensas fotos de gente famosa que por ali passou, incluindo membros da familia real como o Rei Juan Carlos e o Principe Felipe.

In the end the bill was a bit painful, it was the most expensive restaurants where I ate and I believe it was our responsibility mostly on the starters that were not cheap. Lunch started at three in the afternoon and we only went out at six. 
Upon leaving we noticed the great amount of photos of famous people who passed through there, including members of the royal family as King Juan Carlos and Prince Felipe.

Não há nada de extraordinário ou diferente neste Inverno, chuva, vento, neve e frio são o que normalmente nos toca nesta temporada. Se há algo que o diferencia é o número de fins de semana onde estas quatro coisas se juntam e obrigam-nos a ficar em casa até que dizes: basta! Há já alguns tempos que vamos visitar Castelos e desta vez com o tema de uma Caça ao Tesouro para o mais pequeno conseguimos que ele largasse os jogos (como a Wii) para estar entusiasmado com uma actividade fora mesmo que a chuva, o frio e a neve fossem nossos companheiros de viagem. E desta vez não é que o tesouro estava escondido no Castelo de Turégano?

There is nothing extraordinary or different in this winter, rain, wind, snow and cold are what would normally be the weather in this season. If there is something that sets it apart is the number of weekends where these four things come together and force us to stay home until you say: enough! For some of them we have gone to visit castles and this time with the theme of a Treasure Hunt for the little one we could get him off the games (like the Wii) to be enthusiastic about an activity outside despite the fact that the rain, the cold and snow were our traveling companions. And who would have told that the treasure was hidden in Castle Turégano?

Fomos visitar Peñafiel pelo seu Castelo mas ainda bem que decidimos parar antes no centro histórico de Peñafiel. Tinha visto algumas fotografías e tinha muita curiosidade de conhecer a Plaza del Coso. Esta praça de origem medieval que é hoje utilizada para eventos é conhecida pelas suas elaboradas varandas em madeira construídas no século XVIII.
 
We were visiting for its Peñafiel Castle but thankfully decided to stop before the historic center of Peñafiel. Had seen some photographs and was very curious to know the Plaza del Coso. This square of medieval origin which is now used for events is known for its elaborate wooden balconies built in the eighteenth century.

Tenho que admitir que não sou fã de touradas que é o principal evento que se realiza nesta praça e pela qual a chamam Corro. Dizem que nessa altura a autarquia aluga as varandas através de um leilão e não pude deixar de pensar que é quase um desperdicio ter a praça sem grande actividade todo o ano para brilhar apenas nas festas de S. Roque e na Páscoa.
Mas o que mais gostei de Peñafiel foram as ruas estreitas á volta desta praça, com pequenas casas colorida e também o Convento de S. Pablo que não se podia visitar apenas com marcação. Mais tarde perguntei á guia do Castelo que nos contou que no Natal se produziram uma série de roubos que levou a paróquia a fechar as portas ao público abrindo apenas em horas que lhes permita vigilar as pessoas. Triste mas necessário para preservar o interior do Convento.
Foi construido no século XIV num estilo gótico-mudéjar que está bem presente no seu exterior onde se nota a presença dos dois estilos, o mudéjar através dos pequenos tijolos e dos seus característicos arcos. Não tivémos tempo para ver muito mais porque depois íamos ao Castelo.
 
I have to admit I’m not a fan of bullfighting which is the main event that takes place in this square and why it is called Corro. They say that during that time the municipality rents the balconies through an auction and I could not help thinking that it’s almost a waste to have the square without much activity all year to shine only in celebrations like S. Roque and Easter.But what I really liked of Peñafiel was it’s narrow streets around this square with small colored houses and also the Convent of S. Pablo that we could not visit has it was groups only . Later I asked the Castle’s guide and she told us that Christmas produced a series of robberies that led the parish to close its doors to the public only in group hours to allow them to keep an eye on people . Sad but necessary to preserve the interior of the convent .It was built in the fourteenth century in a Gothic – Mudejar style that is spresent in its exterior where the presence of the two styles is notable, the Mudejar through small bricks and its characteristic arches . We did not have time to see much more because we had to go to the Castle.

Tal como os navegadores dos utilizaram a bussola para descobrir novos lugares neste mundo, o TripAdvisor ajuda-nos a encontrar lugares que nunca o conseguiríamos fazer sem a sua ajuda e o Alabrasa foi um deles. Obrigado. E gostámos tanto que ficou no ar uma pergunta: porque é que não podemos ter um Alabrasa em Madrid? Boa comida, com preços razoáveis tinha tudo para ser um éxito na capital.
 
Like seaman used the compass to discover new places in the world, TripAdvisor helps us find places that we could never do so without it’s help and Alabrasa was one. Thank you. And we liked it so much that one question was suspended in the air: why can’t we have a Alabrasa in Madrid? Good food, reasonably priced it has everything to be a success in the capital.

Não querendo substimar Peñafiel e todo o seu interesse cultural mas não esperava encontrar este restaurante aqui, a sua decoração é moderna e cuidada, com uma única sala pequena. Mas se já gostávamos do ambiente foi a comida que nos surpreendeu pela positiva. Pedimos um polvo á brasa que veio acompanhado de maionese e um molho pesto que estava óptimo, se nos podemos queixar de algo foi do facto de ser pouco. Além disso veio um cesto de pão para a mesa que parecía de fabrico próprio e que foi excelente para experimentar todos os sabores que ficaram no molho.
Pedimos depois dois pratos de carne, um era o Tataki de porco (um prato estrela porque vimos outras mesas a pedirem) e o entrecote com batatas “camperas”. Estava tudo tão bom que apesar de o nosso estômago nos avisar que estávamos cheios chegámos a ponderar pedir mais.
 
Not wanting to underestimate Peñafiel and all its cultural interest but we were not expecting to find this restaurant here, the decor is modern and with a careful hand, it has a single small room. But if already we liked the place it was the food which surprised us positively. We ordered an octopus “a la brasa” (grilled) that came with mayonnaise and pesto sauce that was great, if we can complain about something it would be of the fact that it was a scarce portion. Also came a bread basket to the table that looked home-made and it was great to try all the flavors that were in the sauce.
We ordered two meat dishes, one was a Tataki pork (one star dish because we saw other tables ordering it) and entrecote with potatoes “camperas”. It was so good that even though our stomach was telling us we were full we were considering to ask for more.
 
 
Decidimos guardar lugar para a sobremesa e são famosos pelas “torrijas” – são como umas fatias douradas – mas decidimos pedir um gelado de turrón com estaladiços de chocolate e doce de leite. Mais doce não podia estar. No final ficou por uns 25€ por pessoa porque dividi a conta por dois, na realidade eramos três e o nosso filho também comeu.
Sou capaz de fazer outra vez uma hora e meia para voltar a comer tão bem e aproveitar depois para dar um passeio junto ao Castelo.
 
We decided to save room for dessert and they are famous for “torrijas” – are like bread pudding slices– but decided to order a nougat ice cream with crunchy chocolate and fudge. Could not be sweeter. In the end it was about 25 € per person because we divided the check by two, in fact we were three and our son also ate with us.
I can do it again and drive an hour and a half to come back, eat this well and then to enjoy a stroll along the Castle.

Assim que vimos que o sol ia espreitar este fim de semana não hesitámos em fazer um passeio. Visitar o Castelo de Peñafiel faz parte dos nossos planos para este ano para explorar os muitos castelos medievais que se podem encontrar em Espanha, uma forma de fazer passeios com os miúdos enquanto aprendem um pouco de história (bom na realidade só um deles aprenderá alguma coisa porque o outro ainda nem fala).
 
We saw that the sun was peeking this weekend and we didn’t hesitate to go out. Visiting the Castle of Peñafiel is part of our plans for this year to explore the many medieval castles to be found in Spain, one way to do trips with the kids while they learn a little history (well actually only one of them will learn something because the other doesn’t even speak yet).

A visita ao de Peñafiel é feita apenas com guia e tivémos sorte porque apanhámos a primeira da tarde que foi ás 16h00. Apesar de não ser muito extensa, ajuda a conhecer um pouco melhor a sua história e nem por isso senti que nos limitava os movimentos, podíamos tirar fotos, ver detalhes enquanto a guia ia falando.
O Castelo construido numa primeira fase no século X tem a forma de um barco ainda que visto de fora não se perceba, é do topo da Torre de Menagem que podemos melhor apreciar a sua forma, para lá chegar são sessenta degraus. Com a ajuda da guia entendemos alguns detalhes como o chão inclinado para melhor escoar as águas da chuva ou os buracos nas partes da muralha que serviam para atirar óleo quente durante as batalhas ou ainda os calabouços infernais para onde atiravam os presos numa queda de cinco metros. Aqui não se contam histórias românticas, era um Castelo militar preparado para defender a região. Por estar num ponto tão elevado podemos contemplar a pequena vila de Peñafiel.
 
A visit to this one in Peñafiel is done only with a guide and we were lucky because we caught the first  tour of the afternoon that was at 16.00 . Although not very extensive , it helps to know a little better its history and I didn’t felt it limited our the moves as we could take pictures , see details while the guide was talking.The Castle built on a first phase in the tenth century is shaped like a boat though from the outside you have to wonder , is from the top of the Watchtower that we can better appreciate it’s shape but to get there you have to climb sixty steps. With the help of the guide we were able to understand some details like the slanted floor to better drain rainwater or holes in parts of the wall that served to throw hot oil during battles or the infernal dungeons where prisoners were thrown in a fall of five meters. Here we do not have romantic stories, this Castle was a military fortress prepared to defend the region. Being in a high point we can contemplate the small town of Peñafiel .

Saímos do Formigal com uma grande vontade de comer um “chuletón” mas sempre que olhávamos para o preço desistimos mas como Huesca seria a última paragem acabámos por decidir que tínhamos mesmo que comer um e o El Bodegón era um dos sitios recomendados para o fazer.
Instalado numa antiga bodega, foi renovado mantendo o seu espirito e alguns dos seus característicos elementos arquitectónicos como os arcos.
 
We left Formigal with a craving for a “chuletón“ but when we looked at the Price we gave up as Huesca would be the last stop we finally decided that we had to eat one and the El Bodegón was one of the recommended sites to do so.
Housed in a former bodega has been renovated retaining its spirit and some of its architectural features such as the arches.

Entrámos num restaurante com cozinha de autor e de repente começámos a sentir a culpa de pedir um “chuletón” ainda assim conseguimos chegar a um compromisso, pedir a carne e um outro prato que prometia algo diferente e escolhemos o risotto com azafrão e gambas.
Para começar uma tábua de queijos e enchidos da região, com uma excelente mostra do que se faz em Aragão. Depois veio o risotto que estava óptimo e foi a verdadeira estrela da refeição.
Veio depois o “chuletón” acompanhado por umas deliciosas batatas assadas com um molho que parecido ao “pesto” mas mais leve. Quanto á carne estava óptima, de boa qualidade, precisava talvez de mais uma pitada de sal para realçar o seu sabor.
No final temíamos uma conta mais pesada porque só o “chuletón” custava 36€ para duas pessoas, ficou por uns 35€ por pessoa (não vou contar o nosso filho apesar de ter comido arroz e carne) sem sobremesa mas com a entrada e sem o vinho.
 
Entered a restaurant with signature cuisine and suddenly started to feel the guilt of asking for a “chuletón” we were able to reach a compromise, asking for the meat and another dish that promised something different so we chose the risotto with prawns and azafrão.
To start a board filled with cheese and sausages from the region a great showcase of what is done in Aragon. Then came the risotto which was terrific and it was the real star of the meal.
After came the “chuletón“ accompanied by some delicious baked potatoes with a sauce that resembled the “pesto“ but lighter. As for the meat was great, good quality, maybe needed another pinch of salt to enhance the flavor.
In the end we feared a heavier bill because only the “chuletón“ cost 36 € for two people, it wasabout 35€ per person (I don’t count with our son despite having eaten rice and meat) without dessert but with the starter and without wine.

O caminho entre Formigal e Madrid passava por Huesca, no regresso da nossa curta semana na neve decidimos para na capital de Aragão para almoçar. Antes ainda tentámos conhecer o Castelo de Loarre mas o nevoeiro nesse dia era tão grande que nem conseguíamos vê-lo, uma pena porque é um dos melhor preservados da Europa e foi cenário do filme do Ridley Scott, “Kingdom of Heaven”. Chegámos ao centro da cidade e comemos no El Bodegón que fica muito perto do centro histórico.
 
The road between Madrid and  Formigal went through Huesca, returning from our short week in the snow we decided to go to the capital of Aragon for lunch. Before we did try to visit the Castle of Loarre but the fog that day was so thick that we could not even see it, a shame because it is one of the best preserved in Europe and was the setting of the Ridley Scott’s filme “Kingdom of Heaven“. We reached the city center and ate at El Bodegón which is very close to the historical center.

 
Começámos o nosso passeio por Huesca pela Praça da Catedral, o nome explica tudo e é talvez a mais importante da cidade porque para além da sua Catedral de construção gótica está também o edificio do Ayuntamiento e o Museu Diocesano. Durante todo o percurso quisémos visitar alguns monumentos mas estavam todos fechados, algo incrível e talvez o motivo pelo o qual não encontrámos ninguém na rua. Fomos no Sábado o que me parece ainda mais estranho suponho que no Verão já não seja assim.
Pudémos contemplar a catedral desde o exterior com o seu elaborado pórtico que conta com esculturas dos apóstolos. Ainda na mesma praça está a a Fonte da Morena.
 
We started our tour of the Huesca Cathedral Square, the name explains everything and is perhaps the most important in the city because in addition to its Cathedral of Gothic construction there is also the building of the Ayuntamiento (Town Hall) and the Diocesan Museum. Throughout the course we wanted to visit some monuments but they were all closed, something amazing and maybe the reason which we have not found anyone on the street. We went on Saturday which seems even stranger but I suppose summer this does not happen.
We were able to admire the cathedral from the outside with its elaborate porch that has sculptures of the apostles. Also in this square is the Fountain of Morena.
 
 
 
 
Descemos a Calle de las Cortes até chegar á Plaza de Luís López Alluè. Os cafés nas arcadas dos edificios que rodeiam a praça e os divertimentos fechados faziam antever que é mais animada do que o que estávamos a ver, não sei se foi a hora ou o dia mas com excepção de um ou outro restaurante estava tudo fechado.
Seguimos depois em direção ao Mosteiro de S. Pedro el Viejo, também ele estava fechado e ficam por ver os sepulcros de dois importantes reis de Aragão, Alfonso I e Ramiro II, este último conhecido como o Monge foi o responsável de um conhecido e sangrento episódio da cidade em que mandou decapitar doze nobres.
 
We walked down the Calle de las Cortes and arrived to Plaza Luis López Alluè. The cafes in the arches of the buildings surrounding the square and enclosed amusements did anticipate that it is more lively than what we were seeing, I do not know if it was the hour or the day but with the exception of one or another restaurant everything was closed.
Then we went towards the Monastery of S. Pedro el Viejo, it was also closed and we didn’t get to see the tombs of two important kings of Aragon, AlfonsoI and Ramiro II, the latter known as the Monk was responsible for a known and bloody episode of this city in which twelve nobleman were beheaded.
 

Entrámos depois no bairro Mozárabe, onde pelas suas ruas mais estreita encontrámos pequenos edificios coloridos ou decorados com graffitis que anunciavam bares. Esta será a zona de maior animação nocturna da cidade. Ficou por explicar o curioso graffiti que encontrámos dedicado ao chicharro.
Durante o nosso passeio fomos encontrando no chão as conchas que indicam o caminho para Santiago faz parte da Ruta Jacobea vinda da Catalunha.
Ficou a curiosidade de conhecer mais sobre Huesca, talvez numa próxima viagem ao Formigal.
 
Then we went into the Mozárabe neighborhood where by it’s narrower streets we found small colored or decorated buildings with graffiti announcing bars. This will be the biggest nightlife area of the city. I couldn’t explain the curious graffiti we found dedicated to the mackerel (“Chicharro”).
During our tour we were finding shells on the ground that indicate the path to Santiago it is part of the Ruta Jacobe from Catalonia.
We were curious to know more about Huesca, maybe on a forthcoming trip to Formigal.

Taperia Gaudy – Consuegra, Espanha

Antes de visitar os Moínhos em Consuegra – que era o nosso objectivo – queríamos almoçar no restaurante o Alfar. Estava cheio, não tínhamos reserva e estava tão caótico que os empregados iam coçando a cabeça enquanto lhes perguntavas quanto tempo ia demorar a mesa. Como não tinha começado muito bem decidimos ir mais para perto do centro e foi onde descobrimos a Taperia Gaudy. Também estava cheio mas conseguimos ficar no balcão ou “barra” que também tinha carta mas mais reduzida.
Before visiting the windmills (Molinos) in Consuegra – that was our goal – we wanted to have lunch at the restaurant Alfar. It was full, we had no reservation and was so chaotic that employees were scratching their heads as you asked them how long it would take the table. That wasn’t a promising start so we decided to go closer to the center and it was where we discovered the Taperia Gaudy. Was also full but we managed to stay on the counter or “barra” which also had a menú but smaller.

MOINHOS – CONSUEGRA, ESPANHA

Partimos para a região de Toledo com o objectivo de visitar o Castelo e os moínhos de Consuegra. Faz parte de um novo plano de passeios que decidimos fazer nos dias de inverno mais solarengos, visitar Castelos e felizmente Espanha tem para varios fins de semana. Mas a nossa missão em Consuegra ficou incompleta porque só conseguimos ver os moínhos  porque quando chegámos ao Castelo já estava fechado.
We depart for the Toledo region with the aim of visiting the castle and windmills of Consuegra. Is part of a new plan trips we decided to do on winter days sunnier, visit Castles and luckily Spain has for several weekends. But our mission in Consuegra was incomplete because we only see the windmills because when we reached the castle was already closed.

É verdade que o Frankfurt á primeira vista parece um daqueles restaurantes que te serve uns pratos combinados de qualidade duvidosa mas as aparências enganam. Foi na realidade o restaurante mais caro a que fomos e sim a ementa fala em pratos combinados mas a qualidade é bastante boa, é só mais uma das contradições de um restaurante com nome de salsichas alemãs com réplicas de quadros do pintor colombiano Fernando Botero.
 
It is true that at first sight Frankfurt seems one of those restaurants that serves you  combined dishes (“platos combinados”) of doubtful quality but appearances can be deceiving. It was actually the most expensive restaurant we went and it’s true the menu speaks about those combined dishes but the quality is quite good, it’s just one of the contradictions of a restaurant with the name of German sausages and with replicas of paintings by Colombian artist Fernando Botero. 

A decoração era no minimo estranha com um especial fetiche por gordinhos talvez para te indicar que aquí a comida é boa e para esquecer da dieta. Começámos por umas “rabas” (é assim o nome) de choco frito que gosto de comer com um pouco de maionese, estavam tenras e a fritura estaladiça. Depois pedimos o entrecote e tenho que admitir que gostei mais do Grajos, era mais saboroso mas estava também era bom. A seguir uma “tarta” de queijo que estava óptima e um crepe recheado com leite condensado que estava bom mas que para o preço que te cobram pareceu-me escasso.
Gostei da refeição mas não foi o meu favorito da zona e se considero que foi o mais caro não sei se repetiria. O atendimento foi impecável.
 
The decor was strange to say the least with a particular fetish for chubby characters perhaps to indicate that the food here is good and you should forget the diet. We started with “rabas“ (that’s the name) of fried cuttlefish that I like to eat with a little mayonnaise, they were tender and crispy frying. Then we ordered the entrecote and have to admit that I enjoyed more the one from Grajos it was tastier although this one was also good. For dessert a “tarta“ of cheese (like a cheesecake) which was great and a stuffed crepe with condensed milk (fudge) which was good but for the price they charge you it seemed scarce.
I enjoyed the meal but it was not my favorite place and if I take into consideration that it was the most expensive  I do not know if I would repeat it. The service was impeccable. .
