A principal atracção desta praça é a Igreja de Sainte Eugenie, construída em honra da santa patrona da Imperatriz Eugenie, a mulher de Napoleão III. De estilo neo-gótico foi construída no século XIX.A Eugenie de Montijo (nasceu em Espanha) passava muitos verões em Biarritz e ficava instalada “Villa Eugenie” que hoje em dia dá lugar ao famoso Hotel du Palais. 

The main attraction of the square is the Church of Sainte Eugenie, built in honor of the patron saint of the Empress Eugenie, wife of Napoleon III. With a neo–Gothic style was built in the nineteenth century.
Eugenie de Montijo (born in Spain) spent many summers in Biarritz and stayed at “Villa Eugenie“ which today gives way to the famous Hotel du Palais.

Rue du Vieux Marche Aus Poissons – Estrasburgo, França

Junto á Praça Gutenberg está uma animada rua de comércio, a Rue du Vieux Marche aux Poissons (Velho Mercado do Peixe) que termina na margem do Rio Ill.
Mais do que as montras das lojas o que realmente enche o olho é a arquitectura alsaciana dos edificios da rua, mas se o objectivo é mesmo compras não faltam propostas interessantes como a Ventilo, a Kenzo, a Comptoir des Cotonniers e a Petit Bateau, grande parte são marcas francesas mas aqui também encontramos uma Adolfo Dominguez por exemplo.
Near the square Gutenberg is a lively shopping street, the Rue du Vieux Marche aux Poissons (Old Fish Market) ending on the river Ill.
More than the shop windows which really fills the eye is the Alsatian architecture of the buildings from the street, but if the goal is really shopping there are very interesting like Ventilo, the Kenzo, the Comptoir des Cotonniers and Petit Bateau, largely French brands but here we also find a Adolfo Dominguez for example.

Foi uma das coisas que gostámos em Estrasburgo, as pequenas praças com charme e as ruas estreitas ladeadas por edificios de arquitectura típica da Alsácia. A Place du Marche aux Cochons de Lait, é um desses exemplos, pequena mas cheia de encanto.
 
It was one of the things we liked in Strasbourg, small squares with charm and narrow streets lined with buildings of architecture typical of Alsace. The Place du Marche aux Cochons de Lait, is one such example, small but full of charm.

Traduzindo o nome da praça não é dos mais elegantes já que seria qualquer coisa como a Praça do Mercado dos Leitões e animada por vários restaurantes com esplanada entre eles o Ortenberg e o Munsterstuewel. O edificio mais antigo da praça data do século XVI.

Translating the name of the square is not the most elegant since it would be something like the Market Square of Piglets and animated by several restaurants with outdoor seating among them Ortenberg and Munsterstuewel. The oldest building in the square dates from the sixteenth century.

É certo que é a Catedral que lhe confere o nome e a relevância, mas esta praça é provavelmente uma das com mais charme de toda a cidade. Os edificios mantêm a arquitectura típica da região da Alsacia. É como muitas praças, um lugar de comércio e de grande interesse cultural. 
 
Admittedly, it is the Cathedral which gives the name and relevance, but this square is probably one of the most charming of the entire city. The buildings retain the architectural style of the region of Alsace. It’s like many squares, a place of commerce and of great cultural interest.

Ao centro e em frente á Catedral podemos ver vários artistas oferecendo (a troco de €€€) os seus serviços para fazer retratos dos que passam ou caricaturas. Não vimos nenhum a pintar o pitoresco cenário onde o tamanho da fachada da Catedral contrasta com os demais edificios da praça. 
É o turismo que manda nesta praça em que uma parte das lojas tem as portas abertas para venderem “souvenirs” da cidade e da região. Está também um posto de turismo e uma ou outra loja que vende chocolates (Christian’s). Vários restaurantes e cafés a animam.
Uma das recordações que se pode comprar é a cegonha já que Alsácia era o seu destino de migração (de África) pela altura da Primavera.
 
In the center and in front of the Cathedral we can see several artists offering (in return for $$$) their services to make portraits or caricatures of those passing by. We have not seen anyone painting the picturesque setting where the size of the Cathedral façade contrasts with the other buildings of the square.
It is tourism the boss of this square in that a part of shops have open their doors to sell souvenirs of the city and the region. It has also a tourism office and one store that sells chocolates (Christian‘s). Several restaurants and cafes make it more lively.
One of the souvenirs that you can buy is the stork as Alsace was theirs destination of migration (from Africa) by the spring time.

Tínhamos passado pelo o Palácio Rohan e decidimos não olhar mais para o mapa seguindo o primeiro caminho que nos chamasse a atenção. Não podíamos ter tido melhor ideia, se assim não fosse creio que não teríamos descoberto esta rua.
É uma rua de comércio, mais alternativa talvez ou mais bohémia. As lojas com as suas fachadas coloridas fazem lembrar as de Notting Hill em Londres. Grande parte delas estão ocupadas por pequenos comerciantes, criativos que procuram vender os que as multinacionais não vendem.

We had passed by the Rohan Palace and decided not to look further into the map following the first path that called our attention. We could not have had a better idea, if it wasn’t so I do not believe we would discovered this street.
It is a shopping street, perhaps more alternative or more bohemian. The shops with their colorful facades are reminiscent of Notting Hill in London. Much of them are occupied by small businesses, creative people looking to sell what multinationals do not sell.

 
Aqui podemos encontrar as peças autênticas e únicas. As montras têm um código visual próprio fruto da criatividade dos seus proprietários aguçando a vontade de comprar. Felizmente (ou não) as lojas estavam fechadas e conseguimos manter alguns euros na carteira.

Here we can find the unique and authentic pieces that look. The windows have a visual code itself the fruit of creativity of their owners sharpening the willingness to buy. Fortunately (or not) the shops were closed and we could keep a few euros in your wallet.

Saímos de Avignon com destino a Lyon, chegámos ao final do dia e a nossa missão era encontrar um hotel. Procurávamos o de sempre, central e a bom preço. Claro que sem nada marcado ficamos um pouco á mercê do que há. No GPS colocámos todos os hotéis junto á zona da Rue Mérciere que foi uma das recomendadas e procurávamos coisas como Ibis, Best Western ou equivalentes em preço.
Depois de muito procurar (e de nos pedirem preços exorbitantes…é certo que estamos em Semana Santa) encontrámos este que ficou por 80€ a noite. Já não tinham muitos quartos e o que tinham, bom…digamos que depois ao ver o site do hotel sentimo-nos um pouco ultrajados, mas era o último que havia e por todo o lado ouvíamos o mesmo. 
 
We left Avignon bound for Lyon, we have reached the end of the day and our mission was to find a hotel. We were looking for the usual, central and good price. Of course with nothing booked we are at the mercy of what’s available. In GPS we put all the hotels near the area of Rue Merciere which was one of the recommended and we were looking for things like Ibis, Best Western or similar in price.
After much searching (and asking us expensive prices, it’s right … we are in Holy Week)we found that this was € 80 per night. They didn’t had many rooms and what they had, well … let’s say that after seeing the site of the hotel we felt a bit outraged, but it was the last room they had and  we heard everywhere the same.

O quarto era minúsculo, ao ponto de para entrar na zona de chuveiro ter de baixar a cabeça (podem ver pela foto a altura), para ir á casa de banho tínhamos que pedir licença a tudo o resto já que a porta por falta de espaço abria para fora e não para dentro. Pensámos que estavam a cobrar-nos preço de hotel por um quarto de pensão.  
O que tinha de bom era a sua localização, da Rue de L’Ancienne Préfecture, colada á Merciére e a dois passos da Quai St. Antoine.
 
The room was tiny, to the point that to enter the shower area you had to lower your head (you can see by the picture height), to go to the bathroom we had to ask permission to everything else since the door due to space opened outwards and not inwards. We thought they were charging us an hotel bedroom price for a ghesthouse room.
What was good was the location, Rue de L’Ancienne Préfecture, close to Merciere and two steps from Quai St. Antoine.

Prometia ser um pedaço de Paris em Estrasburgo, tinha uma esplanada disposta á boa maneira da capital e o menú com uma imagem da Sacre Coeur. Ainda não tínhamos chegado a Paris porque não tentar ter já um gosto de como será?

It promised to be a piece of Paris in Strasbourg, it had a terrace like the ones from the capital and the menu with a picture of the Sacre Coeur. We had not yet arrived in Paris having why not try a taste of how it will be?

Decidimos tomar aqui o pequeño-almoço, foi o típico “cafe au lait” e o croissant, porque em equipa vencedora não se mexe está claro mas não foram os melhores croissant que comemos em França e sabíamos que ainda estavam mais para vir porque nem a meio da viagem íamos.
A rua estava tranquila á hora que fomos e deu para ficar ali a apreciar Estrasburgo, sem grande pressa.
We decided to have breakfast here it was the typical “cafe au lait” and croissant, because one does not change a winning team but it was not the best croissant we had in France and we knew there was still more to come because we weren’t even half way.
The street was quiet at the hour that we went and we were able sit there and appreciate Strasbourg, with no great haste.

RUE DES REMPARTS – BORDÉUS, FRANÇA

Tínhamos saído da Praça Pey-Berland e entrámos nesta Rue des Remparts completamente por acaso. O deixar-te levar sem mapa tem destas coisas, entramos numa rua de comércio do que não encontras na Sainte-Catherine, aqui não há grandes marcas de franchising com as suas grandes vitrines, aqui encontramos espaços pequenos, originais e acolhedores.

We had left the Pey-Berland Square and we have entered this Rue des Remparts completely by chance. Strolling away with no map has these things, we enter a shopping street that you will not find in Sainte-Catherine, here there are no major franchise brands with its large windows, here we find small, unique and cozy spaces.

 
Estava tão entusiasmada com a rua que tirei muitas fotos mais que na Sainte-Catherine, as montras pareciam estar num concurso para ver quem ganhava a melhor, sem serem espectaculares convidavam a entrar.  A “sorte” é que tínhamos alguma pressa para ver mais coisas em Bordéus e não perdemos a cabeça a fazer compras.
A oferta é variada, desde as lojas de roupa e bijuteria, passando por pequenas galerias de arte, cafés, restaurantes, um salão de chá e uma floristas. Todas com aquele charme do comércio antiga sem perder o contacto com o mundo moderno. Também os cafés com as suas pequenas esplanadas convidam a sentar e aproveitar o ambiente da rua, pena que tínhamos tão pouco tempo na cidade, teríamos tentado experimentar os vários que ali existem.
Uma das lojas mais apelativas era a M Le Macaron, aliás fotografar a sua fachada e montra sem gente foi tarefa muito complicada, todos que ali passavam tinham que parar e ficavam uns bons minutos a apreciar a árvore de macarons.
Was so enthusiastic about the street I took many more photos than in Sainte-Catherine, the windows seemed to be in a contest to see who won the best, without being spectacular they invited to enter. Our “luck” is that we had any hurry to see more things in Bordeaux and do not lose my head shopping.The offer is varied, from clothing stores and jewelry, through small art galleries, cafes, restaurants, a tea room and a florist. All with that charm of the old trade without losing touch with the modern world. Also cafes with its small terraces invite you to sit and enjoy the street environment, shame that we had so little time in the city, we would have tried to experience the many that exist there.One of the most appealing shops was the M Le Macaron, indeed to shoot its facade and window without people was very complicated task, all that went there had to stop and were a good few minutes to enjoy the macarons tree.

Torre e Praça Pey-Berland em Bordéus, França

É uma das principais praças da cidade de Bordéus e muitas das ruas adjacentes são importantes principalmente em termos de comércio e movimento. O que primeiro chama a atenção assim que entramos na praça é a Torre Pey-Berland que está junto á Catedral. A torre tem o nome do arcebispo da cidade, Pierre Berland e foi ele que iniciou a construção da mesma. No topo uma faustosa estátua dourada da Nossa Senhora da Aquitânia.

It is one of the main squares of the city of Bordeaux and many of the surrounding streets are important mainly in trade and movement. What first catches the eye as soon as we entered the square is the Pey-Berland tower that is next to the Cathedral. The tower is named after the city’s Archbishop Pierre Berland and it was he who initiated the construction of the same. At the top one the sumptuous golden statue of Our Lady of Aquitaine.

Place de la Bourse – Bordéus, França

Quando planeávamos a nossa “road-trip” a França lembro-me de pesquisar na internet sobre Bordéus e uma das primeiras fotos que vi foi a desta praça. Era uma foto nocturna com o reflexo da praça e do eléctrico no espelho de água que está em frente, sabíamos que tínhamos de passar ali e tentar que a nossa câmara (e os nossos olhos) capturasse a mesma imagen.
O nosso plano só teve um problema, fomos durante o dia e não podíamos ficar para o cair da noite. Uma pena mas a verdade é que conseguimos aproveitar muito bem Bordéus e esta belíssima praça com arquitectura do século XVIII.
When we planned our road-trip to France I remember searching the internet about Bordeaux and one of the first pictures I saw was this square. It was a night photo with the reflection of the square and the tram in the mirror of water that is ahead, we knew we had to go there and try to get our camera (and our eyes) to capture the same image.
Our plan had only one problem, we went there during the day and we could not stay for the evening. A shame but the truth is that we could enjoy Bordeaux and this beautiful square with eighteenth-century architecture.
