Tínhamos estirado bastante o tempo da nossa manhã e quando quisémos almoçar o relógio marcava três e meia, ainda tentámos um dos carrinhos de hotdogs, decidimo ser mais selectivos e o único que nos gostou já nem tinha salsichas para os fazer. Decidimos caminhar pelas ruas do Financial District até que chegámos ao White Horse Tavern, o nome não me era estranho e ao parecer havia um no bairro de Chelsea famoso por ser frequentado por artistas. Seria do mesmo? Nunca chegámos a saber mas a fome era tanta que o facto de o nome nos parecer familiar foi suficiente para entrar.
We had stretched the time of our morning and when we wanted to eat lunch the clock struck half past three, we first tried the hotdogs carts, but decided to be more selective and the only one we liked didn’t have sausages left. We decided to walk the streets of the Financial District until we arrived at the White Horse Tavern, the name was not strange to me and it seems there is one in the Chelsea neighborhood famous for being frequented by artists. It would be the same? We never got to know to go in.
A primeira coisa que chama a atenção é a fachada do pequeno edificio do bar “entalada” entre os arranha-céus depois entras e vês o enorme balcão onde quase todos os que vês sentados são homens. Uns são os típicos homens de Wall Street (traders, advogados, economistas, etc..) de fato e gravata, outros com um uniforme de alguma empresa de manutenção, trabalhadores da construção com o seu cinto de ferramentas, não importa a partir do momento em que passas pela porta todos somos iguais. Todos queremos beber uma cerveja ou aproveitar a Happy Hour, relaxar e não pensar no trabalho. Entrámos num bar onde os únicos turistas éramos nós e estávamos a adorar a experiência, era autêntica.
A outra coisa que nos chamou a atenção foi a cozinha era um pequeno cubículo que vês muito bem quando entras, o cheiro já te começa a convencer que não cometeste nenhum erro ao decidir pelo White House Tavern.
The first thing that strikes you is the facade of the small building “sandwiched” between the skyscrapers and then you go in see the huge bar where almost all you see seating there are men. Some are typical of Wall Street workers (traders, lawyers, economists, etc. ..) in suit and tie, others with a uniform of some maintenance company, construction workers with their tool belts on, no matter what on the moment you walk through that door we are all equal. We all want to drink a beer or enjoy Happy Hour, relax and not think about work. We have entered a bar where we were the only tourists and were worshiping the experience it was authentic.
The other thing that struck us was the kitchen that was a small cubicle that you see very well when entering the place, the smell starts to convince you did not commit any error in deciding to in the White House Tavern.
Escusado será dizer que os empregados são muito simpáticos e vimos um casal com mais idade que pareciam os donos, foram eles que nos trouxeram a comida e perguntaram se estava tudo bem. Havia Happy Hour mas como o dia ainda ia ser longo decidimos pedir Coca-cola, para comer pedimos uma salada César e um Cheeseburger Deluxe (com extra de bacon) cada um. A salada César, que na foto parece ter o frango queimado foi das melhores que comi na minha vida, era frango no churrasco, estava óptimo e o molho muito bom. Os hamburgers fizeram-me pensar que muitas vezes procuras os sitios da moda e te esqueces dos clássicos, este estava tão bom como outros que tínhamos comido antes (tivémos a sorte de comer sempre bem). No final não houve espaço para sobremesa, não achámos muito caro o Cheeseburger Delux com o Bacon custa $7,5 e como pedimos a salada já nos levou a $29 no total e saímos com vontade de atravessar a Brooklyn Bridge para conseguir digerir muito bem tudo o que comemos.
Uma agradável descoberta.
Needless to say that the employees are very friendly and we saw an older couple that looked like the owners of the place, they were the ones that brought us food and asked if everything was okay. There was Happy Hour but because the day was going to be long one we decided to order Coke, to eat we ordered a Caesar salad and a Deluxe Cheeseburger (with extra bacon) each. The Caesar salad in the photo seems to have burnt chicken but it was the best I’ve ever eaten in my life, it’s barbecued chicken was excellent and had a very good sauce. The burgers made me think that often one searches the sites of fashion and you forget the classics, this was as good as others we’d eaten before ( we were lucky to always eat well ) . At the end there was no room for dessert, we felt it was not very expensive the Delux Cheeseburger with Bacon costs $7.5 and as we ordered the salad it led us to $29 in total and we left wanting to cross the Brooklyn Bridge to better digest all we ate.
A very pleasant discovery.
