Este ano e no nosso tradicional passeio navidenho pelas ruas de Madrid encontrei este mercado na Plaza Isabel II. Caminhávamos pela Calle Arenal a caminho do Mercado de Natal da Plaza Mayor e começo a ler Dulce Navidad…com este nome como é que alguém consegue ficar longe?
Não sei há quanto tempo existe mas este ano foi a primeira vez que o vi, aqui vendem-se churros, pão, “empanadas”, todo o tipo de gomas e doces, chocolates, bolinhos de maçapão, etc..
 
This year and during our traditional walk through the streets of Madrid during Xmas time we found this market in the Plaza Isabel II. We walked down Calle Arenal on our way to the Plaza’s Mayor Christmas Market when I start reading Dulce Navidad (Sweet Christmas) … with that name how can anyone stay away?
I do not know how long it exists but this year was the first time I saw it, here they sell churros, bread “empanadas”, all kinds of gums and candies, chocolates, marzipan cookies, etc. ..

Começou em Novembro e termina no dia dos Reis, uma tentação que procura vender os doces mais tradicionais de esta época. Eu gostei de uma bancada em particular, que tinha um “hórreo” (ou espigueiro) galego e que tudo o que vendia tinha proporções gigantescas, como por exemplo os donuts que eram quase do tamanho de um bolo rei para não falar no pão.
Toda uma deliciosa descoberta!
 
It began in November and will end on the day of the Kings, a temptation that seeks to sell the more traditional Candy of this season. I liked a stall in particular that had a galician “hórreo” (or raccard) and everything they sell here had gigantic proportions, like the donuts that were almost the size of a Bolo Rei not to mention the bread.

Para ir de compras a Londres sem sair de Madrid, a Beefeater recria todos os anos um mercado de Natal e esta edição de 2012 está a decorrer este fim de semana na Galeria de Cristal do Palácio de Cibeles.
“Há uma Londres para cada um de nós e a Beefeater convida-te a descubrir a tua” – este é o mote do mercado promovido pela famosa marca de Gin, a bebida da moda tanto em Madrid como em Lisboa.
 
To go shopping in London without living Madrid, Beefeater recreates recreates every year a Christmas market and this 2012 edition is taking place this weekend at Gallery Crystal Palace Cibeles.
“There is a London to each of us and Beefeater invites you to discover yours” – this is the motto of the market promoted by the famous brand of Gin, the drink of the moment both in Madrid and Lisbon.

Para recrear o ambiente da cidade e dos seus mercados mais conhecidos como Camden ou Portobello, trouxeram os próprios comerciantes que ocupam mais de 20 postos e onde podemos encontrar de tudo um pouco desde roupa vintage, acessórios, arte, música, acessórios para animais, lomography, etc.. Para quem não sabe o que oferecer neste Natal e procura ideias originais este seria o mercado a visitar.
Além disso há também um barbeiro e numa das barracas pode-se fazer tatuagens.
Logo á entrada está uma árvore de Natal e um ringue de patinagem que não sendo muito grande já dará para praticar. A sua utilização está incluída no preço.
To recreate the environment of the city and its markets better known as Camden or Portobello, they brought the traders themselves who occupy more than 20 stations and where we can find a little of everything from vintage clothing, accessories, art, music, pet accessories, lomography etc. .. Right at the entrance there’s a Christmas tree and an ice skating ring that is not too large but it’s good enough to practice. Its use is included in the price.
 
 
Para quem tem sede e fome, o mercado conta com um bar de Gin claro está e a entrada normal custa 5€ mas por 7€ inclui uma bebida. A Happy Days (uma loja que com porta aberta na Malasaña) vende bagels (com muito boa pinta devo dizer) e cupcakes para não deixar o gin cair em estômago vazio.
For the thirsty and hungry, the market has a bar Gin is clear and normal entrance costs 5 € but € 7 includes a drink. The Happy Days (a shop with the door open Malasaña) sells bagels (with very good looking I must say) and cupcakes to not let the gin fall on an empty stomach.

Esta é a terceira vez que vamos ao Mercado de Natal de Madrid, sem grandes inovações devo dizer. As bancadas vendem o mesmo tipo de coisas entre as personagens para os presépios, musgo, árvores de natal, enfeites, gorros de Natal e o carrossel também o mesmo. Pouco mudou de 2011 para 2012, talvez só a iluminação da praça que apesar de não ter visto a funcionar reparei que era diferente do ano passado.
 
This is the third time we go to the Christmas market in Madrid, without major innovations I must say. Stalls sell the same type of things from the characters to the nativity sets, moss, Christmas trees, ornaments, Christmas hats and the same carousel. Little has changed from 2011 to 2012, maybe just the lighting of the square that despite not having seen the work I noticed that was different from last year.

Faz parte da tradição natalícia passar por aqui, comprar uma viagem no carrossel para as crianças (3€), dar uma volta pelas barracas e comprar o último grito em gorros divertidos – nós comprámos o da rena e um do Angry Birds. Mas mais tradicional ainda é o “Belén” (ou presépio) para o qual muitos madrilenhos vêm aqui comprar alguma figura, um moinho de água, musgo, etc..
Este ano nós tínhamos uma missão: comprar o anjo para o nosso presépio e conseguimos por 2€. Mas nem todas são assim tão baratas, vi um pequeno feito de barro e tecido que custava 18€.
 
It’ part of the Christmas tradition to come by, buy a trip on the carousel for the children (3 €), a stroll through the stalls and purchase the latest in funny hats – we bought the reindeer and the Angry Birds. But the most traditional is still the “Belen” (or Nativity set) to which many Madrileños come here to buy some figures, a water mill, moss, etc..
This year we had a mission: buy the angel to our nativity set and managed to get one by 2€. But not all are so cheap, I saw ​​a small one made of clay and fabric that costs 18€.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
O momento económico não é para grandes celebrações mas ainda assim Madrid já pedia uma mudança neste formato de mercado, uma aproximação aos dos países do Norte e ir buscar alguma inspiração. Os espanhóis famosos pelo seu “tapeio” podiam adicionar umas barraquinhas com iguarias dos churros ás “patatas bravas” e claro muitas “cañas” para matar a sede. Fará mesmo falta dez barracas a vender o mesmo tipo de figuras de presépio?
Ainda assim este fica a 20 minutos de nossa casa e os outros mercados do género estão a um voo de duas a quatro horas de distância.
 
This economic moment is not for large celebrations yet Madrid would already ask for a change in this market format, approaching the Northern countries and get some inspiration from them. The Spaniards famous for their “tapeio” could add a few stalls with delicacies from churros to “patatas bravas” (spicy potatoes) and of course many “cañas” (beer) to quench thirst. Do you really need ten stalls selling the same type of crib figures?
Still this is 20 minutes from our home and others are a flight of two or four hours away.

Chegámos a um dos objectivos da nossa viagem á Bélgica: o Mercado de Natal em Bruges. Dizem que é um dos melhores do país, não posso confirmar porque não conheço a concorrência mas é sem dúvida o que esperava encontrar, um sitio animado cheio de gente, comida, bebida e um entorno fantástico proporcionado pela Markt onde estão alguns dos edificios mais emblemáticos de Bruges.

 

We have arrived to one of our destinations in Belgium: the Christmas Market in Bruges. They say it’s one of the best in the country, I couldn’t confirm that because I don’t know it’s competition but it is without a doubt what I expected, a lively place crowded, food, drinks and a fantastic surroundings provided by the Markt where some of the most emblematic buildings in Bruges are located.

De passagem por Luxemburgo não podíamos deixar de visitar o seu Mercado de Natal. Fica na Place d’Arms e faz parte de uma lista  de mercados que fica aberto mesmo depois do dia 25 de Dezembro.
Tem aquele charme do tradicional mercado de Natal do Norte da Europa mas com um ambiente mais simpático e diria até familiar. Fomos com um local o que nos ajudou a conhecer algumas das tradições do Luxemburgo que se reflectem também neste evento.
Passing through Luxembourg we couldn’t go without visiting it’s Christmas Market. It’s located in the Place d’Arms and it’s part of a market’s list that is open even after the 25th of December.
It has the traditional charms of a northern Europe market but with a nicer mood and I would say, more familiar. We went with a local that helped us understand some of the Luxembourg’s traditions that also reflect on this event.

É o nosso segundo ano a visitar o principal Mercado de Natal de Madrid. O ano passado fizémo-lo de noite o que permitiu aproveitar as luzes de Natal que este ano são exactamente iguais, além disso fomos no inicio de Dezembro e estava mais vazio. Este Sábado estava cheio, demasiado até.
Sendo que o Natal é o tema aqui podemos encontrar de tudo um pouco desde a árvore,o musgo para o presépio, as figuras ou um já feito, decorações para a casa e para a árvore, etc..
 
It’s our second year visiting the main Christmas Market in Madrid. Last year we visited during the evening which allowed us to enjoy the Christmas lights that this year were exactly the same, besides we went in the beginning of December and it was less crowded. This saturday it was full.
Knowing that Christmas is the main theme what we can find here are things like the tree, the moss for the nativity set, the separate figures or a complete one, home decorations and for the tree, etc.. 

O que nos pareceu um grande êxito de vendas são os gorros do tema, há desde árvores e Pai Natal, lobos, renas, etc.. Quase todas as barraquinhas os vendem e pela a rua, as pessoas entram no espírito usando-os. 
Este ano voltou também o carrousel, exactamente o mesmo do ano passado e no mesmo local. Se a ideia é que seja uma tradição ir a este Mercado de Natal então não se deve mexer em receita vencedora.
Aproveitámos para comprar alguns enfeites de Natal, os preços são os que encontramos nos hipermercados por exemplo. Isto significa que não vamos encontrar autênticas pechinchas mas também não vamos pagar mais caro, temos mais variedade por onde escolher e para quem gosta de montar presépios há barraquinhas que são autênticas preciosidades (que por sinal eram as que estavam mais cheias de gente) vendendo peça a peça, juntam-se as que vendem musgo e está feito.
Uma coisa é certa, a Plaza Mayor é o melhor local para fazê-lo e não pelo seu tamanho, mas pelo o seu entorno.
 
What looked to us like a best-seller were the Christmas hats, from trees, to Santa Claus to wolfs and reindeers, etc.. Almost every stall sells them and people get into the Christmas spirit wearing them as they walk down the street.
They also had the carrosel this year and in the same spot. If the general idea is that coming here is a tradition than you cannot change a winning recipe.
We did buy some Christmas decorations, the prices were in line to the ones we found in the hypermarkets. This means we won’t find great bargains but we won’t pay more either, there is a lot of variety and who love setting up a great nativity set there are stalls with a lot of precious things (those were actually the ones packed with people) selling piece by piece and then you have those that sell the moss and it’s done.
One thing is certain, the Plaza Mayor is the best place to do it not just for it’s size but also for the mood it sets.

O Natal é sempre uma época muito animada e agitada quando o Inverno pede casa e as pessoas andam pelas ruas ás compras ou simplesmente a viver o espírito. Creio que o Mercadillo de Natal da Plaza Mayor serve os dois propósitos. Na realidade eles não vendem prendas mas sim decorações de Natal e outras já a pensar na “Nochevieja” que aqui se pode celebrar com uma peruca na cabeça e pinturas como se fosse o Carnaval.
 
Christmas is always a busy time, when the Winter makes you want to stay at home this time of the year there are crowds shopping or simply enjoying the season’s spirit. I think the Christmas Market of the Plaza Mayor serves both.
In there you don’t actually shop for gifts, most of the stalls sell Christmas decor and others sell things for the “Nochevieja” – New year’s eve, than in here is celebrated almost with wigs and painted faces.

Este mercado de rua enche a praça de gente, de animadores e até um carrosel á antiga está a funcionar aqui fazendo as delicias das crianças e dos seus pais. Visitámos ao final do dia e acabou por ser o melhor, vimos as luzes de Natal que decoram a praça e o carrosel ganha mais vida também com a sua iluminação.
Vimos também a decoração de Natal de um dos muitos edificios do El Corte Inglês que estão na zona do Sol. Uma das fachadas tinha uma original decoração de Natal com bonecos alusivos a vários países, um amontoado de gente acotovelava-se nesta rua para ter uma oportunidade de “sacar uma foto” a tão original decoração.
 
This street market gathers quite a crowd, there is also some street artists and even an old fashion carousel that is always delights both children and parents. We visited at the end of the day and it was even better, the Christmas lights were on and also the ones from the carousel and it comes alive.
We also saw the Christmas decorations from some buildings of the El Corte Inglês department stores that are around the Sol area. One of them had an original Christmas line-up of big dolls dedicated to several countries, there was quite a crowd around that place to take a photo.

Hoje conhecemos…Óbidos a Vila Natal.
Já tínhamos estado o ano anterior mas creio que este ainda foi melhor, organizaram-se melhor e conseguiram que o encanto fosse completo. Acho a iniciativa excelente principalmente para ajudar a celebrar o espírito natalicio em familia, porque está tudo montado para que todos venham, pais, filhos, avós, etc..
Antes de entrarmos nas muralhas que cercam Óbidos, temos a exposição de árvores de Natal feitas pelas várias empresas da vila.
