Portobello Market – Londres, Inglaterra

Descobri Portobello ao mesmo tempo que o filme do Hugh Grant e Julia Roberts, Notting Hill. Desde então quando vou a Londres procuro ruas circulares com pequenas casas coloridas e um banco de madeira num frondoso jardim…mas se vamos a Portobello em dias de mercado encontramos exatamente o contrário, mal conseguimos ver as casas e há uma multidão de pessoas que procuram pechinchas, antiguidades ou simplesmente vão passear.

Portobello I discovered at the same of the Hugh Grant’s and Julia Roberts movie, Notting Hill. Since then when I go to London I look for the crescent street with small colorful houses and a wooden bench in a garden … but if we go to Portobello on a market day we find just the opposite, we can hardly see the houses behind it and there is a crowd of people looking for bargains, antiques or simply go sightseeing.

Kensington Palace – Londres, Inglaterra

É a residência oficial dos duques de Cambridge, foi a casa da Princesa Diana e foi o lugar onde nasceu a Rainha Vitória, tudo isto acrescenta á visita do Kensington Palace, porque umas poucas paredes separam o museu da casa real. Logo ao entrar vemos as referências á Princesa Diana e á Rainha Vitória, a visita começa com a história da vida de esta última com peças que vão desde a sua infância até aos seus últimos dias como Rainha de Inglaterra.

It is the official residence of the Dukes of Cambridge, was the home of Princess Diana and was the birthplace of Queen Victoria, all this adds to the visit of the Kensington Palace, because a few walls separate the royal house from the museum. And as soon as we go in we can see the references to Princess Diana and Queen Victoria, the visit begins with the story of the life of the latter with pieces ranging from her childhood up to his last days as Queen of England.

O Palácio ganha importância no século XVIII durante o reinado de William III, anos mais tarde a sua sobrinha Rainha Ana que termina a obra do tio na recuperação de Kensington, durante o seu reinado surgem os Aposentos da Rainha que podemos ver hoje. Mas a sua residente mais importante foi sem dúvida a Princesa Alexandria Vitória que nasceu aqui, conheceu o Principe Alberto e recebeu a noticia da morte do seu tio.  A parte que podemos visitar está dividida entre os Aposentos do Rei e os da Rainha, os do Rei começam com uma elaborada escadaria e o ponto alto da visita é a Galeria. Os da Rainha mais discretos, têm uma escada em madeira, podemos ver a galeria e o seu quarto.
Há também uma exposição de Fashion Rules que contém roupa da Rainha Isabel II, da sua irmã Margarida e da Princesa Diana, alguns deles emblemáticos utilizados em eventos públicos.

There is also a Fashion Rules exhibition containing clothes of Queen Elizabeth II, her sister Margaret and Princess Diana, some of them quite emblematic has they were used at public events.

É um dos Royal Parks de London e fazia parte dos jardins privados do Palácio de Kensington, onde nasceu a Princesa Vitória e onde após a noticia da morte do seu tio se tornou Rainha. Colado ao Hyde Park é difícil perceber onde um termina e o outro começa, mas o melhor é que tem muito para ver e é o plano ideal para o fim de semana quando queres dar um passeio. São 111 hectares de verde, lagos, esculturas, esplanadas e jardins secretos.
It is one of the Royal Parks of London and was part of the private gardens of Kensington Palace, where Princess Victoria was born and where after the news of the death of his uncle became Queen. Glued to Hyde Park is hard to see where one ends and the other begins, but it is best with a lot to see and is the ideal plan for the weekend when you want to take a walk. Pride of Paddington – Londres, Inglaterra

O nosso primeiro Fish & Chips em Londres foi no Pride of Paddington, o pub do bairro. O nosso hotel ficava em Paddington e no primeiro dia ás três da tarde a fome era mais que muita, foi quando encontrámos este Pub que também é uma pensão, prometem camas a partir de 19 libras por noite. Foi remodelado em 2011 mas mantém o seu espírito de pub tradicional com uma carta onde o Fish & Chips, os Sunday Roast e as Shepperd Pie marcam presença.

Our first Fish & Chips in London was in the Pride of Paddington, the neighborhood pub. Our hotel was located in Paddington and on the first day at three o’clock we were starving, that’s when we found this Pub which is also a pension that promises beds from 19 pounds per night. It was renovated in 2011 but retains its spirit of traditional pub with a menu in which the Fish & Chips, the Sunday Roast and Shepperd Pie are present.

Chinatown – Londres, Inglaterra

Uma das minhas melhores memórias da primeira vez que fui a Londres (devia ter uns catorze anos) foi passar por Chinatown, parece mentira mas a verdade é que teve bastante impacto porque parecia que estava a visitar dois países em vez de um. A Chinatown que vi hoje parece-me mais “limpa” menos agitada e talvez mais comercial, mais londrina mas ainda assim podemos encontrar experiências genuínas como as barraquinhas de comida de rua ou as lojas que vendem os produtos que os chineses gostam de comprar.
One of my best memories of my first time I went to London (must have been about fourteen years) was going through Chinatown, seems to lie but the truth is that had quite an impact because it seemed that was visiting two countries rather than one. The Chinatown I saw today it seems “cleaner” less hectic and perhaps more commercial, more Londoner but we can still find genuine experiences such as street food stalls and shops selling products that the Chinese like to buy.

LITTLE VENICE – LONDRES, INGLATERRA

Não são muitos os que fazem o esforço para ir até á zona de Paddington para ver Little Venice, talvez por isso seja um lugar onde podes encontrar alguma tranquilidade e sossego. Parece até que saímos da cidade. Este é o lugar onde dois canais se encontram o que passa pelo Regent Park e o Grand Unión, o resultado é agradável e acolhedor com barcos que funcionam como bares, museus ou para o que foram feitos, cruzar o canal.

Not many make the effort to go up to the Paddington area to see Little Venice, so maybe that is wahy it’s a place where you can find some peace and quiet. It looks as if we left the city. This is where the two channels Regent Park and the Grand Unión come together, the result is nice and cozy  place with boats that function as bars, museums or what they have been built to, cross the canal.

Nós aproveitámos para dar um passeio seguindo um dos canais que dava até á estação de comboios de Paddington, um outro passeio que acabámos por não fazer mas que é recomendado é o do Grand Union que está do outro lado da ponte da Westbourne Terrace Road, que além disso proporciona uma das melhores vistas sobre Little Venice.
We took the opportunity to stroll following one of the channels leading until the Paddington train station, another walk that we ended up not doing but that is recommended is the Grand Union which is across the bridge of the Westbourne Terrace Road, which also provides one of the best views of Little Venice.

Poppies Fish & Chips – Londres, Inglaterra

Em Londres temos que comer Fish & Chips e dizem que o melhor é o do Poppies, prémios e elogios não lhe faltam. Não somos especialistas na matéria nem andámos a provar todos da cidade mas foi sem dúvida o melhor que comemos no de Spitafields, com um suculento peixe envolto numa fritura crocante com porções para gente com muita mas muita fome. Além disso o Poppies tem história, foi fundado por Pop Newland em 1952 exatamente neste bairro numa altura em que Londres ainda recuperava da II Guerra.

In London we have to eat Fish & Chips and say the best is the Poppies, awards and accolades recommend it. We are not experts in the field or we weren’t tasting all of the city but it was certainly the best we eat in this on in Spitalfields, with a juicy fish wrapped in crispy fried batter with servings for people that must be very hungry. Also the Poppies has history, was founded by Pop Newland in 1952 exactly in this neighborhood at a time when London was still recovering from World War II.

Não foi a nossa primeira escolha de hotel, na realidade íamos ficar em casa de uns amigos e tínhamos cancelado um mais modesto e mais barato porque sabíamos que seria só para dormir, precisávamos de um minimo de conforto. Quando voltámos a marcar só por três días o hotel mais barato que encontrámos foi este e foi caro, muito caro para o que normalmente pagamos por um quarto mas dizem que Londres é assim, cara. Para nós o melhor era mesmo a localização, ficava em Paddington que estava perto de Paddington Station, Notting Hill, Little Venice, Hyde Park, Regent’s Park e Marylebone.
 
It was not our first choice of hotel, in fact we were staying at the home of some friends and we canceled a more modest and cheaper because we knew we would only be sleeping, we needed a minimum of comfort. When we returned to score only three days the cheapest hotel we found was this and it was expensive, very expensive for what normally pay for a room but they say that London is so expensive. For us the best was the same location, was in Paddington that was close to Paddington Station, Notting Hill, Little Venice, Hyde Park, Regent‘s Park and Marylebone.

Não achei o quarto particularmente bonito mas era funcional e espaçoso, tinha um pequeno escritório que foi essencial para carregar todos os aparelhos electrónicos que com a escassez de fichas adaptadoras (só tínhamos uma) havia alternativas como USB e uma extra como as que temos em Espanha e Portugal. Da limpeza nada a assinalar, vista não tinha e quando reservámos foi sem pequeno-almoço. Outra vantagem é que na rua do hotel havia um posto de bicicletas que foi bastante útil para conhecer a cidade, além de que ali perto havia um grande número de restaurantes.
 
I did not find the room particularly pretty but was functional and spacious, had a small office that was essential to charge every electronic device that with the shortage of adapter plugs (only had one) they had alternatives such as USB and an extra plug as we have in Spain and Portugal. Cleaning nothing to report, we had no view and have reserved without breakfast. Another advantage is that down the street had a bike post it was useful to know the city, and nearby there was a large number of restaurants.

É um dos mercados mais recomendados e requisitados no centro de Londres, nós fomos ás três da tarde e os restaurantes ainda estavam a abarrotar, mesmo pelos corredores havia muita gente a ver montras. Instalado num edificio neo-clássico do século XIX recuperado nos anos oitenta para voltar a cumprir a sua função, está totalmente coberto o que permite fazer compras ou comer na sua esplanada independentemente do tempo. Nós entrámos pelo Apple Market, uma zona com pequenas bancas que vendem artesanato na sua maioria bijuteria, roupa e fotografia.
One of the most recommended and requested markets in central London, we were there at three o’clock and restaurants were still bursting, even in the corridors there were many people window shopping. Housed in a neo-classical building of the nineteenth century recovered in the eighties to return to fulfill its function, is fully covered allowing shopping or eating in its terrace whatever the weather. We entered the Apple Market, an area with small stalls selling crafts mostly jewelry, clothing and photography.

LONDON EYE – LONDRES, INGLATERRA

A maior Ferris Wheel da Europa oferece uma vista de Londres desde os seus 135 metros de altura e dizem que a melhor altura para a visitar é ao final do dia ou durante a noite para ver as luzes da cidade. Foi inaugurada em 2000 e é patrocinada pela Coca-Cola, contém trinta e duas cápsulas bastante espaçosas, climatizadas e com informação (em vários idiomas) sobre o que estamos a ver. Isso sim é preciso encontrar o momento ideal para “embarcar” porque as filas são extensas ainda assim pela nossa experiência andam rápido.

The largest Ferris Wheel in Europe offers great views of London from its 135 meters high and say that the best time to visit is in the sunset or at night to see the city lights. It was inaugurated in 2000 and is sponsored by Coca-Cola, contains thirty-two capsules quite spacious, air conditioned and with information (in several languages) about what we are seeing. You do need to find the ideal time to “embark” because the queues are extensive but from our experience they go fast.

O bilhete compra-se no edificio que está do lado esquerdo da roda gigante, nós cometemos o erro de comprar um combinado com a Madame Tussaud (erro porque não poupámos dinheiro nem as filas). Depois da compra dos bilhetes assistimos a um filme 4D sobre o London Eye seguindo uma gaivota que passeia pela cidade.
Foram uns vinte minutos de espera até entrar dentro de um dos seus casulos com cerca de doze pessoas e simplesmente apreciar a vista. South Bank, Big Ben, Catedral de S. Paulo, o arranha-céus Shard são uma parte do que podemos ver e como fomos ao pôr do sol tudo tinha ainda um toque mais interessante. E o que mais me impressionou foi a estabilidade da cabine e eu que não sou a maior fã das alturas senti-me completamente á vontade, diria que foi das coisas que mais gostei em Londres.

The ticket is bought on the building that is on the left side of the Ferris wheel, we made the mistake of buying a combined with the Madame Tussaud (error because we did not save money or escaped the queues). After purchasing the tickets we watched a 4D film about the London Eye following a seagull flying through the city.
It was about twenty minutes waiting to get inside one of their cocoons with about a dozen people and simply enjoy the view. South Bank, Big Ben, St Paul’s Cathedral, skyscraper Shard are a part of what we see and how we went at sunset making it a more interesting touch. And what impressed me most was the stability of the cabin and I who am not the biggest fan of heights felt completely at ease, I would say it was one of the things I liked best in London.
