Ponte de Brooklyn – Nova Iorque, EUA

A ponte que juntou Brooklyn a Manhattan demorou cerca de dezasseis anos a ser construída e abriu em 1883. Tem mais de cento e trinta anos de história e uma das mais notáveis foi a da morte do seu criador John Augustus Roebling antes de começar a construção. É outro dos símbolos da cidade que não podíamos deixar de visitar mas não tínhamos muito tempo para ver Brooklyn por isso fomos de metro e voltámos a pé pela ponte até Manhattan.
The bridge that joined Brooklyn to Manhattan took about sixteen years to build and opened in 1883. It has over one hundred and thirty years of history and one of the most notable was the death of its creator John Augustus Roebling before the construction start. It is another symbol of the city that we could not fail to visit but did not have much time to see Brooklyn so we went by underground and come back walking across the bridge towards Manhattan.

Não podíamos deixar de entrar na Magnolia Bakery depois de ter visitado a Carrie no 66 da Perry Street. Falta o banquinho onde ela se sentou com a Miranda a comer um dos seus deliciosos cupcakes mas na realidade comer um é tão rápido que nem precisamos. A decoração do Magnolia é simples e acolhedora, o que realmente chama a atenção nesta pequena loja é a sua montra de bolos e cupcakes cuja variedade me fez ficar indecisa.
 
We had to enter the Magnolia Bakery after visiting Carrie at 66 Perry Street. They don’t have the stool where she sat with Miranda to eat one of their delicious cupcakes but actually eating one is so fast that there is no need. The decor of the Magnolia is simple and warm, what really draws attention in this small shop is its cakes and cupcakes window in such a variety that made me hesitant.

Depois de dar algumas voltas á cabeça acabámos por escolher o Carrot e o de Pistachio, tenho que admitir que são bons mas não os melhores que já comi. Creio que um dos seus pontos fortes é a madalena por baixo da cobertura, esponjosa e saborosa para além da sua variedade de “toppings”. Cada cupcake custa 3,5€.
Para os que preferem outras opções, qualquer um dos seus bolos para vender á fatia tinha óptimo aspecto, havia de cenoura, Red velvet, chocolate, etc..
 
After thinking a lot about it we ended up choosing the Carrot and Pistachio,I have to admit that are good but not the best I have ever eaten. I believe one of its strengths is the cake under the icing, spongy and tasty in addition to a good variety of “toppings“. Each cupcake costs € 3.5.
For those who prefer other options, any of their cakes they sell in slices look good, they had carrot, red velvet, chocolate, etc ..

Eu confesso: vivi durante algum tempo a obsessão da série Sexo e a Cidade. Confesso. E sei que não sou a única, sei que há mais gente que comprou a box set em DVD, que quando chega o Inverno e não podemos pôr um dedinho fora de casa fazemos maratona de episódios, que ainda hoje nos lembramos de algumas cenas. Também confesso que o objectivo da minha visita á Perry Street foi para tirar a típica foto á porta da “casa” da Carrie Bradshaw e sentir que ela (ou melhor a Sarah Jessica Parker) ali passou, reviver as cenas onde ela se sentava com o Big, ou ficava sozinha a fumar embrulhada nos seus pensamentos. Mas a Perry Street enamora…e muito, quase sem necessitar de uma famosa fachada. 
 
I confess: I lived for some time  with an obsession for the Sex and the City series. I confess. And I know I‘m not the only one, I know there are more people who bought the DVD box set, that when winter arrives and we can not put a finger out of the house we make an episode marathon, that still today we remember some scenes. Also confess that the purpose of my visit to Perry Street was to take the typical photo at the door of the Carrie Bradshaw’s “house“  and feel that she (or rather Sarah Jessica Parker) was there, relive the scenes where she sat with Big, or was alone to smoke wrapped in her thoughts. But Perry Street makes you fall in love … and, almost without requiring a famous facade.

A primeira coisa importante a saber é que a casa é no número 66, aliás é fácil identificá-la porque é a única que está vedada para não tirar fotos nos degraus. Posso dizer que não é das mais bonitas do bairro mas é sem dúvida a mais famosa e concorrida. Ao lado está o 64 que aparece em alguns sites como sendo a casa da Carrie, na realidade esteve para ser mas nunca aconteceu. Esta zona do West Village é daquelas onde sonhas viver, onde Nova Iorque deixa de ser arranha-céus e mostra a sua cara mais romântica com estas casas em “brownstone” construídas no século XIX, numa época em que eram um formato mais económico de construção mas hoje uma casa aqui pode custar dez milhões de dólares. 
 
The first important thing to know is that the house is number 66, which by the way is easy to spot because it is the one that is sealed so you do not take pictures on the steps. I can say that is not the most beautiful in the neighborhood but it is certainly the most famous and crowded. Next door is the 64 that appears on some websites as being the home of Carrie actually it was going to be but never happened. This West Village area is one of those where you dream to live, where New York is no longer  made of skyscrapers and shows its most romantic face with these brownstone houses built in the nineteenth century, at a time when they were a more economical format of building but today a house here can cost ten million dollars.

Quando me perguntam qual gostei mais: Empire State Building Observation Deck ou o Top of the Rock, fico realmente na dúvida. Se me pedem uma recomendação para visitar e só podes ver um, diria o último mas o ESB tem outro encanto, não é apenas um dos edificios mais altos de Nova Iorque é também uma estrela de cinema que brilhou em filmes como o King Kong e Sleepless in Seattle. O importante é entender o valor que a visita pode ter para cada um, no nosso caso queríamos mesmo ir e por isso reservámos os bilhetes (com pass express) antes escapando ás longas (e exasperantes) filas.
 
When people ask me what I liked most: Empire State Building Observation Deck or Top of the Rock, I am really in doubt. If they ask me a recommendation of which one to visit if you can only see one, I would say the last but the ESB has another charm, is not only one of the tallest buildings in New York is also a movie star that shone in films like King Kong and Sleepless in Seattle. The important thing is to understand the value the visit may have for you, in our case we really wanted to go so we have pre-booked the tickets (with express pass) before, escaping the long (and infuriating) queues.

Um imponente exemplo de Art Déco, foi inaugurado em 1931 e tem cerca trezentos e oitenta metros de altura sem contar com a antena. A entrada com bilhete express custa cerca de $50 (+ $2 de gastos de gestão) e passámos á frente de toda a gente, valeu a pena porque a hora do pôr do sol é das mais concorridas. Já no Observation Deck foi simplesmente aproveitar a vista sobre a cidade, de repente tudo o resto parecia muito pequeno, os edificios que eu achava altos na Quinta Avenida são casas de brincar. Graças á sua vista 360º vemos muito da cidade, o One World Trade Center, o Chrysler Building, o Rockfeller Center, o Flatiron, Brooklyn, New Jersey e só não vemos o Central Park porque está um pouco longe.

In the Observation Deck it was simply enjoy the view over the city, suddenly everything else seemed too small, the buildings that I thought high on Fifth Avenue are play houses. Thanks to its 360º view we see much of the city, the One World Trade Center, the Chrysler Building, the Rockefeller Center, the Flatiron, Brooklyn, New Jersey and just do not see the Central Park because it is a bit far.

Foi preciso viajar a Nova Iorque para ir a um restaurante tailandês, na realidade já tinha provado alguns pratos mas sempre em restaurantes asiáticos que servem desde sushi a um caril thai. E comer aqui foi uma obra do acaso, estava a espreitar a carta quando um grupo de americanos ao sair do restaurante nos dizem: “Go in, it’s the best thai in town”. E não sabemos se é o melhor mas foi o que nos levou a adorar a comida tailandesa mesmo não arriscando muito.
 
It took traveling to New York to go to a Thai restaurant, we had actually tasted some dishes but always in Asian restaurants that everything from sushi to a Thai curry. And eating here was a fluke, I was taking a peek at the menu when a group of Americans left the restaurant and told us: “Go in, it’s the best thai in town”. We do not know if it’s the best but it was the one that led us to love Thai food even without risking much.

A decoração tinha um toque de moderno misturado com o que poderia ser um pequeno restaurante em Bangkok, tudo isto em pleno Hell’s Kitchen. Ficou a vontade de provar as exóticas “stir fried frog legs” mas decidimos ir aos nossos pratos habituais: pedimos uns Vegetable Spring Rolls que vêm em quantidade generosa, com uma massa crocante e um excelente recheio de jicama, cogumelos e noodles celofane. Depois pedi um Wok Cashew Nuts with Schrimp que estava delicioso, com camarão fresco e verduras de qualidade, o marido pediu o Jungle Curry Fried Rice with Chicken que gostou mas esperava que fosse um pouco mais picante. O almoço ficou por trinta dólares mais cinco de gorjeta, os pratos rondam os oito-dez dólares, foi mais uma excelente experiência em Nova Iorque a um bom preço. 
 
The decor had a modern touch mixed with what could be a small restaurant in Bangkok, all in one place right in Hell’s Kitchen. There was the desire to taste the exotic “stir fried frog legs“ but decided to go to our usual dishes: we ordered some Vegetable Spring Rolls that come in generous amount, with a crunchy crust and an excellent filling of jicama, mushrooms and cellophane noodles. Then I ordered a Wok Cashew Nuts with schrimp which was delicious, with fresh shrimp and good quality vegetables, my husband asked for the Jungle Curry Fried Rice with Chicken which he liked but expected it to be a bit more spicy. Lunch was for thirty five dollars more tip, the dishes are around 8-10 dollars, it was another great experience in New York at a good price.

TRUMP TOWER – NOVA IORQUE, EUA

Não sei muito bem como descrever a nossa sensação ao visitar a Trump Tower, fiquei entre se perdemos o nosso tempo ao fazê-lo ou se realmente é um lugar tens que ver pelo o que representa: um símbolo do famoso império imobiliário construído por Donald Trump. Tem cerca de duzentos metros de altura e é dos edificios mais altos em Nova Iorque com apartamentos onde dizem que Bruce Willis e o casal Beyoncé-Jay Z têm um.
 
I’m not sure how to describe our feeling when visiting the Trump Tower, I was between if we lose our time to do it or if it really is a place you have to see for what is: a symbol of the famous real estate empire built by Donald Trump . It has about two hundred meters high and is of the highest buildings in New York with apartments where they say Bruce Willis and the couple Beyoncé Jay–Z have one.

Conta com zonas públicas que são as que podemos visitar, para além de restaurantes e cafés tem dois pequenos jardins um com vista para a Quinta Avenida e outro que dá para uma rua interior. Não achei estes jardins muito bem cuidados mas vi em algum lado que são utilizados por quem trabalha nos escritórios para a pausa do almoço. Foi construída na década de oitenta e isso nota-se na decoração, cujo excesso de dourado faz com que pareça um pouco fora de moda mas é um excelente exemplo do que significa luxo para os Trump, foi inaugurado em 1983 uma ano depois de uma das maiores crises económicas no país. E para os fãs de este empresário há uma loja com merchandising no piso de entrada.
 
It has public areas which are those that we can visit, as well as restaurants and cafes it has two small gardens with views of Fifth Avenue and another that leads to an inner street. I did not think these gardens were very well maintained but I saw somewhere that are used by those who work in offices for a lunch break. It was built in the eighties and it shows in the decor, the excess of gold makes it look a bit out of fashion but is an excellent example of what luxury means for Trump, it was opened in 1983, a year after one of the greatest economic crisis in the country. And for the fans of this entrepreneur there is a store with merchandising on the entrance floor.

Este restaurante ficará para sempre na nossa memória como uma das experiência mais autênticas que tivémos em Nova Iorque. Foi recomendado por amigos e é realmente muito bom, tanto que nem reparas na decoração (ou falta dela), qualquer mesa com cadeiras livres é onde te pode sentar na realidade ficámos numa com três grupos de pessoas diferentes, uma mãe com os seus dois filhos pequenos (que comeram “dumplings” como nunca vi), um casal de chineses com a sua filha e dois amigos especialistas na carta do Joe’s Shanghai porque os vi comer coisas que nem conseguia identificar.
 
This restaurant will forever be in our memory as one of the most authentic experiences we had in New York. It was recommended by friends and it’s really good, so that you do not notice the decor (or lack of it), any table with a free chair is where you can sit in fact we were with three different groups of people, a mother with her two small children (that ate “dumplings” like I never seen), a couple of Chinese with his daughter and two friends experts in the Joe’s Shanghai menú because I saw them eat things that could not even identify.

Uma coisa é certa: queríamos provar os dumplings e foi o primeiro que pedimos. Estava óptimos e percebemos a fama do Joe’s Shanghai, no cesto estavam oito e foi muito complicado conseguir comer mais depois. Mas já não havia volta atrás, vieram depois oito guiozas que por ser um dumpling foi complicado identificar na imensa variedade que aqui oferecem e nem vale a pena perguntar aos empregados que na sua grande maioria não fala em inglês (ou não se esforçam…não percebi).
Por último e já a desejar não ter pedido mais comida porque estavamos já bastante satisfeitos, chegaram as gambas fritas e picantes igualmente boas. Um dos seus pratos mais famosos é a sopa de dumplings que foi o que vimos muita gente comer.
No final jantámos por trinta três dólares já com a gorjeta.
 
One thing is certain: we wanted to taste the dumplings and it was the first we ordered. It was great and we realized the fame of Joe’s Shanghai, the basket had eight and it was very complicated to eat more after. But there was no turning back now, then came the eight guiozas and because they were dumplings it was difficult to identify them in the immense variety that they offer here and it’s no solution asking to employees who mostly do not speak English (or don’t try to…I did get it).
Finally and already wishing we did not order more food because we were already quite satisfied the fried and spicy prawns arrived, they were equally good. One of his most famous dishes is the dumplings soup that was what we saw many people eat.
At the end we had dinner for thirty three US dollars already with the tip.

São mais de cinquenta e oito mil nomes de americanos que serviram na guerra do Vietnam os que estão inscritos num muro de mármore negro com cerca de setenta e cinco metros. Foi uma das participações mais controversas dos Estados Unidos que gerou vários protestos, um dos com maior impacto decorreu aqui em Washington com mais de cem mil pessoas.
 
There are more than fifty-eight thousand American names who served in the Vietnam war which are written in a black marble wall with about seventy-five feet. It was one of the most controversial participation of the United States that generated several protests, one with most impact took place here in Washington with over one hundred thousand people.

Está dividido em três zonas: o mural dedicado aos veteranos de guerra, o memorial dedicado ás mulheres que faleceram no Vietnam composto por uma escultura de Glenda Goodacre  e por último a Estátua dos Três Soldados, criada por Frederick Hart foi construída em bronze e representa três soldados, um da Marinha e dois do Exército.
O muro funciona com uma timeline que começa em 1956 e termina no ano de 1975. Podemos encontrar no chão junto aos nomes pequenas bandeiras que são uma dedicatória que os que guardam o memorial deixam ficar, outro tipo de ofertas são retiradas e guardadas num armazém, isso significa que a camisa de uniforme e o boné que eu vi não vão estar ali por muito mais tempo. 
 
It is divided into three zones: the mural dedicated to war veterans, the memorial dedicated to women who died in Vietnam that consists of a sculpture of Glenda Goodacre and finally the statue of the Three Soldiers, created by Frederick Hart was built in bronze and represents three soldiers, one Marine and two Army.
The wall runs with a timeline that begins in 1956 and ends in 1975. Depois de almoçar num sports bar em Washington DC (os rapazes quiseram ver um jogo da bola) fui dar um passeio pela zona do National Mall com o objectivo de ir dar ao Memorial dedicado a Lincoln, pelo caminho passei pelos Jardins da Constituição, um pedaço de tranquilidade na cidade monumental que atrai bastantes turistas.
 
After having lunch at a sports bar in Washington DC (the boys wanted to see a soccer game) I went for a walk by the National Mall area in order to go to the dedicated the Lincoln Memorial, on my way there I walked through the gardens of the Constitution, a piece  of tranquility in the monumental city that attracts many tourists.

Foi construído na década de setenta, a ordem veio do Presidente Nixon e deve ter sido das poucas coisas boas que fez porque hoje quem vive e visita pode disfrutar de este agradável jardim que tem como ponto principal o seu lago com vista para o obelisco dedicado a Washington ao fundo. Pareceu-me perfeito para os piqueniques de fim de semana, ou para o intervalo de almoço que podes também aproveitar para ler um livro.
Faz parte do Jardim, o Memorial dedicado aos veteranos da Guerra de Vietnam.
 
It was built in the seventies, the order came from President Nixon and must have been one of the few good things he did because whoever lives and visits the city can enjoy this nice garden whose main point is the pond with a view to the obelisk dedicated to the Washington in the background. It seemed perfect for picnics on weekends, or the lunch breaks when you can also enjoy reading a book.
Is part of the Garden, the Memorial dedicated to veterans of the Vietnam War.

Dos vários monumentos que tem esta cidade, o Washington Monument é um dos mais emblemáticos começou a ser construído em 1848 para prestar tributo ao primeiro presidente dos Estados Unidos, George Washington. Tem a forma de um obelisco e com cento e setenta metros de altura é o edificio mais alto da cidade.
 
Of the several landmarks that this city has, the Washington Monument is one of the most emblematic, it’s construction began in 1848 to pay tribute to the first US president, George Washington. It has the shape of an obelisk and at hundred and seventy meters is the tallest building in the city.

É possível visitar o seu interior e chegar até aos 150 metros onde através de umas pequenas janelas é possível ter a melhor vista sobre Washington D.C..  Sobreviveu a algumas ameaças a última foi em 2011 durante o terremoto de Virginia que chegou aos 5.8 da escala de Ritcher, deixou algumas marcas na estrutura mas continua a dominar o céu da cidade.
 
You can visit the interior and reach up to 150 meters where through a small window you can have the best view over Washington DC. It survived some threats the last was in 2011 during the Virginia earthquake that reached 5.8 of the Richter scale, left some marks on the structure but continues to dominate the sky of the city.
