Em 2014 planeámos um Verão diferente, em vez de esgotar todos os dias de papo para o ar ao sol decidimos ir conhecer outro tipo de praias, as do dia D. Queríamos conhecer um pouco mais sobre a sua história e o Norte de França. Voámos de Madrid até Paris, não chegámos a sair do aeroporto e fomos alugar um carro deram-nos um Fiat 500. A primeira paragem da nossa Road Trip a Normandia e Bretanha foi, Rouen.
In 2014 we planned a different summer, instead of exhausting every day of airtime in the sun we decided to go to another type of beach, the D day. We wanted to know a little more about its history and the north of France. We flew from Madrid to Paris, did not get out of the airport and went to rent a car gave us a Fiat 500. The first stop of our road trip to Normandy and Brittany was, Rouen.

1. Rouen
(desde Paris 160Km, 1h44)
O seu centro histórico é pequeno e fácil de percorrer. Surpreendem as suas casas com “colombages”, as famosas e coloridas fachadas com vigas de madeira e argamassa, contém igualmente uma boa carga histórica principalmente por ser o lugar onde dizem que Joana D’Arc foi executada e também de ter sido parcialmente destruída durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial. Rouen tratou-nos bem no que diz respeito a gastronomía, ficámos pouco tempo mas o suficiente para provar alguns dos seus pratos mais tradicionais. Ficámos apenas um dia e dormimos num Ibis ás portas do centro histórico.

Its historical center is small and easy to navigate. They surprise their houses with “colombages”, the famous and colorful façades with wooden beams and mortar, also contains a good historical load mainly because they are the place where they say that Joan of Arc was executed and also to have been partially destroyed during the Second World War. Rouen treated us well as far as gastronomy was concerned, we were short on time but enough to sample some of their more traditional dishes. We stayed only one day and slept in an Ibis just outside the historic center.
2. Jumièges
(desde Rouen 28,5Km, 35 minutos)
No segundo dia de viagem partimos desde de Rouen até á abadia de Jumièges, na realidade fomos ver as suas ruínas porque não está completa. É um lugar único, com uma beleza espectacular e muita tranquilidade. Inicialmente fundada em 654 como um mosteiro da Ordem de S. Bento foi mais tarde destruído pelos vikings até que em 1067, Guilherme I da Normandia volta a construir a abadia. Fazem parte de este grande complexo as ruínas da Igreja de São Pedro e os claustros. Um excelente exemplo da arquitetura românica na Normandia que vale mesmo a pena visitar.
On the second day of our journey we left from Rouen to the abbey of Jumièges, in fact we went to see its ruins because it is not complete. It is a unique place with spectacular beauty and tranquility. Initially founded in 654 as a monastery of the Order of St. Benedict was later destroyed by the Vikings until in 1067, Guillaume I of Normandy rebuilt the abbey. The ruins of St Peter’s Church and the cloisters are part of this large complex. An excellent example of Romanesque architecture in Normandy that is worth a visit.

3. Caen
(desde Jumièges 113Kms, 1h35m)
Foi o nosso centro de operações, já que alugámos aqui uma casa via Airbnb mesmo no coração da cidade. Foi uma das cidades bombardeadas durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial e que teve que renascer das cinzas, não é normalmente considerada a mais atrativa da Normandia mas para nós foi como a nossa segunda casa, o lugar onde regressávamos depois de uma nova jornada de descobertas pela região. Destacamos o Castelo e bela vista que proporciona, a Igreja de S. Pedro e os seus bouchons para provar a gastronomia local. E para entender melhor o que aqui se passou durante a grande guerra, é visitar o Memorial de Caen e o seu museu.
It was our center of operations, since we rented here a house via Airbnb right in the heart of the city. It was one of the cities bombed during World War II and had to be reborn from the ashes, is not usually considered the most attractive of Normandy but for us it was like our second home, the place where we returned after a new journey of discoveries by the region . We emphasize the Castle and beautiful view that provides, the Church of S. Pedro and its bouchons to taste the local gastronomy. And to better understand what happened here during the Great War, is to visit the Caen Memorial and its museum.
4. Cabourg
(desde Caen 33Km, 35 min)
Quando viajas a Cabourg também viajas no tempo até á Belle Epoque e onde os mais privilegiados passavam o seu Verão entre o luxo dos hotéis, as noites de Casino e claro está passeando o seu glamour pela costa das flores onde se encontra esta pequena cidade balnear. Nós fomos só um dia, suficiente para conhecer a sua essência e não estava um tempo muito favorável para banhos (pelo menos para nós).
When you travel to Cabourg you also travel in time to the Belle Epoque and where the most privileged spent their summer between luxury hotels, nights in the casino and strolling their glamor along the coast of flowers where this small seaside town is located. We were only here for one day, enough to see its essence and was not a very favorable time for bathing (at least for us).
5. Honfleur
(desde Cabourg 48Km, 40 min)
Durante a nossa estadia na Normandia não podíamos deixar de visitar uma das suas cidades mais bonitas, antes um agitado porto comercial e hoje em dia, um pitoresco destino turístico. Fomos ao final do dia depois de visitar Cabourg, aproveitámos para jantar junto ao Vieux-Bassin e dar um passeio num lugar que parece que parou no tempo.
During our stay in Normandy we could not miss one of its most beautiful cities that was before a busy trading port and today, a picturesque tourist destination. We went late in the day after visiting Cabourg, took the opportunity to dine in the Vieux-Bassin and took a walk in a place that seems to have stopped in time.
6. Mont Saint Michel
(desde Caen 125Km, 1h20m)
Visitar o Mont St-Michel é viajar no tempo e quanto mais te aproximas mais te sentes como os peregrinos que durante séculos vinham venerar o Arcanjo S. Miguel. E andámos muito até passar pela Porta de l’Avancée e subir até á Abadia. A ilha que apaixona milhares de visitantes todos os anos tem essa particularidade de que a maré influencia a visita.
Visit the Mont St-Michel is to travel through time and the more you approach the more you feel like pilgrims for centuries came to worship the Archangel Michael. And we walked a lot to go through the L’Avancée door and climb to the Abbey. The island which makes thousands of visitors fall in love each year have this particularity that the tide influences the visit.
7. Saint Malo
(desde Mont St. Michel 57km, 1h)
Visitámos o Monte Saint-Michel pela manhã e aproveitámos a tarde em Saint-Malo que nos tinha sido recomendada. Esta cidade fortificada ficou famosa pelos seus corsários que atacavam navios inimigos e ficavam com as suas riquezas, alguma faltaram fizeram durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial para protegê-la da invasão alemã e da consequente destruição a que foi submetida por parte dos Aliados para conseguir libertá-la. É só pesquisar no Google para entender esse nível de destruição mas mais importante ainda dar valor á sua reconstrução.

8. Dinan
(desde Saint Malo 33Kms 37 min)
Dinan é uma bonita e pequena cidade medieval que vale a pena visitar. Por ela passa o Rio Rance no seu caminho até ao mar junto a Saint-Malo e o melhor é caminhar pelas ruas do seu centro histórico contemplando os seus edificios de traçado medieval que se foram conservando até aos dias de hoje.
Dinan is a beautiful, small medieval town worth visiting. Through it passes the Rance River on its way to the sea next to Saint-Malo and it is best to walk the streets of its historic center contemplating its medieval buildings that have been preserved to this day.
9. Utah Beach
Utah beach é hoje uma praia tranquila mas foi uma das mais importantes do Dia D e talvez a menos letal. Hoje para além de poder visitá-la tem um dos mais impressionantes museus dedicados ao desembarque das tropas aliadas em território francês.
Utah beach is now a quiet beach but was one of the most important on D-Day and perhaps the least lethal. Today besides being able to visit it has one of the most impressive museums dedicated to the landing of Allied troops in French territory.
10. Pointe du Hoc
De tudo o que te pode impressionar quando visitas as Praias do Dia D, para mim o Pointe du Hoc está no top. Enquanto entras em Utah o Omaha Beach e já pouco encontras da guerra, há areia e mar mas aqui vês os bunkers, os buracos provocados pelas explosões ou de balas cravadas nas paredes.
Of all that can impress you when you visit the D-Day Beaches, for me Pointe du Hoc is at the top. As you enter Omaha Beach in Utah and find little of the war, there is sand and sea but here you see the bunkers, the blast holes or bullets stuck in the walls.
11. Cemitério da Normandia – Omaha Beach
(desde Caen 48kms – 41 min)
É um lugar de visita obrigatória e principalmente para reflectir. Aqui esto centenas de cruzes que representam os que lutaram numa guerra que ninguém realmente ganhou, todos perderam, eles são a prova. Tivémos a sorte de ver a um veterano de que desembarcou em Omaha Beach e visitava o cemitério, os anos curam tudo, desfocam memórias e até arrancam sorrisos de quem escapou por pouco á cruz plantada nesta relva.
It is a must visit place and mainly to reflect. Here are hundreds of crosses representing those who fought in a war that no one really won, all lost, they are the proof. We were fortunate enough to see a veteran who landed at Omaha Beach and visited the cemetery, the years heal everything, blur memories, and even smirk at those who narrowly escaped the cross planted on this grass.

12. Bayeux
(Desde Omaha Beach – 21,1 kms 22 min)
Visitámos a pequena cidade para conhecer a sua famosa tapeçaria sobre a história de Guilherme o Conquistador, acabou por surpreender-nos com uma bonita Catedral e umas ruelas cheias de encanto.
We visited the small town to know its famous tapestry on the history of Guilherme the Conqueror, ended up surprising us with a beautiful Cathedral and charming alleys.

13. Arromanches
(desde Bayeux 12Kms 20 min)
Ainda se pode ver o famoso porto artificial que Churchill tinha mandado construir na praia, este seria um importante centro logistico para a Operação Overlord. Desde sempre uma pacata vila de pescadores que se enche no Verão e onde para sempre ficaram as marcas da II Guerra Mundial.
You can still see the famous man-made harbor Churchill had built on the beach, this would be an important logistics center for Operation Overlord. It has always been a quiet fishing village that fills up in summer and where the marks of World War II were forever.
14. Paris
(desde Caen 250kms 3 horas)
Voltámos a Paris onde terminámos a nossa Road Trip. Aproveitámos para visitar alguns monumentos mais que ainda não tínhamos tido a oportunidade e há sempre boas desculpas para ficar uns dias mais na cidade. Fomos conhecer a Ópera por dentro, tentámos o Museu d’Orsay mas as filas era intermináveis, divertimo-nos na Fête des Tuileries e passámos uma tarde romântica junto ao Canal de St. Martin.
We returned to Paris where we finished our Road Trip. We took the opportunity to visit some monuments but we had not had the opportunity and there are always good excuses to stay a few days in the city. We got to know the Opera inside, tried the Musee d’Orsay but the lines were endless, we had fun at the Fête des Tuileries and spent a romantic afternoon by the St. Martin Canal.
