Quando chegámos ao Cemitério da Normandia coincidimos com a visita VIP de um veterano que desembarcou na Omaha Beach no famoso dia D de 6 de Junho de 1944. Foi o melhor da nossa visita vê-lo olhar para a praia e para o cemitério, ele que viveu para contar o horror de esse dia mas que nesse momento o fez com um sorriso como o de quem tem saudades dos lugares onde somos felizes. Ele não foi feliz seguramente, nada neste cemitério traz felicidade mas tantas cruzes serão em vão se não somos capazes de celebrar que a liberdade que temos hojes foi graças á coragem de estes jovens soldados.
When we arrived at the Normandy Cemetery we coincided with the VIP visit of a veteran who landed at Omaha Beach on the famous D-day of June 6, 1944. It was the best of our visit to see him look at the beach and the cemetery, he who lived to tell the horror of that day but at that moment did so with a smile like the one who misses the places where we are happy. He was not happy surely, nothing in this cemetery brings happiness but so many crosses will be in vain if we can not celebrate that the freedom we have had was thanks to the courage of these young soldiers.
A visita não te muda a vida radicalmente mas é impossível ficar indiferente, por momentos chegas a pensar que determinados comportamentos de turistas são condenáveis dado o lugar onde estás, pensas no respeito pela vida humana e de como há sempre pouco em tempos de guerra, são milhares de cruzes que fazem parte da história mundial mas cada uma delas conta a de um filho, neto, amigo, marido, pai, etc..
The visit does not change your life radically but it is impossible to remain indifferent, for some time you come to think that certain tourist behaviors are condemnable given the place where you are, you think about the respect for human life and of how there is always little in times of war, are thousands of crosses that are part of world history but each of them counts that of a son, grandson, friend, husband, father, etc.
Alguns dos pontos de interesse do cemitério são a sua capela e o seu memorial que conta com os nomes de mais de mil e quinhentos soldados que não foram encontrados. Ao centro uma estátua de bronze que representa o espirito da juventude americana que renasce nas ondas do mar. Tem alguns soldados famosos aqui enterrados dois deles filhos do presidente norte-americano Theodore Roosevelt, nenhum morreu no dia 6 de Junho de 1944 mas um deles liderou as tropas em Utah Beach para morrer um mês depois de ataque cardíaco. É dos monumentos melhor classificados em França e vale mesmo a pena a visita, para entender as consequências da guerra e ser impactados por quase dez mil cruzes que deram a sua vida para libertar a Europa.
Some of the points of interest of the cemetery are its chapel and its memorial which has the names of more than fifteen hundred soldiers that were not found. In the center is a bronze statue representing the spirit of American youth that is reborn in the waves of the sea. There are some famous soldiers here buried two of them sons of the American President Theodore Roosevelt, none died on June 6, 1944 but one of them led the troops in Utah Beach to die a month after heart attack. It is one of the best classified monuments in France and worth the visit, to understand the consequences of the war and be impacted by almost ten thousand crosses that gave their lives to free Europe.
