E só a fachada do edificio já deslumbra, com a sua arquitectura típicamente grega, a começar pelas quatro colunas ao centro. Percebemos no entanto que estamos perante um edificio de construção recente e confirmamos depois que foi feito no século XIX.
Ao entrar começamos a “navegar” pelas várias colecções, pela pré-história, o período Neolítico, a idade do bronze, a vários objectos e estátuas que suportam a mitologia grega.

 

And just the facade of the building dazzles with its typically Greek architecture, starting with four columns in the center. We realize however that we are in front of a building of recent construction and later confirmed that it was done in the nineteenth century.
Going in we begin to “navigate” through the various collections, the prehistory, the Neolithic Age, the Bronze Age, several objects and statues that support the Greek mythology.

Ágora – Atenas, Grécia

É a grande rival da Acrópole na disputa do melhor sítio arqueológico de Atenas e irónicamente, é desse ponto mais alto que melhor se pode contemplar a Ágora. Tinham funções distintas e por isso hoje podemos ver outros traços da arquitectura de Atenas Clássica onde edificios como o Stoa of Attalos (na primeira foto visto desde a Acrópole) ou o Templo de Ares.
Um local de extrema importancia política e social, a Ágora está dividida entre a parte de construção grega e posteriormente a parte romana, quando estes dominaram a cidade.
It is the great rival of Acrópolis in the race for the best archaeological site in Athens and ironically, it is from that highest point that you have the best view over the Agora. They had distinct functions and so today we can see other features of the architecture of Classical Athens like the Stoa of Attalos (seen in the first photo from the Acropolis) and the Temple of Ares.
A place of great social and political importance, the Agora is divided between the Greek part of building and later Roman part, when they dominated the city.

Acrópole – Atenas, Grécia

É a principal atracção turística de Atenas e por isso é uma missão quase impossível tirar fotos sem que não esteja uma multidão de pessoas pelo caminho. Depois de ter visto Ephesus na Turquia a Acrópole já não tinha para nós o mesmo encanto, se tivesse sido ao contrário teríamos dado mais valor á experiência de a visitar. Ainda assim é um lugar único, fascinante, complexo, carregado de histórias, de mitos e em constante reabilitação.

It’s the main tourist attraction in Athens and so it is an almost impossible task taking pictures without a crowd of people along the way. After seeing Ephesus in Turkey the Acropolis no longer had the same charm for us, if it had been otherwise we would have given more value to this visit experience. Still it’s a unique place, fascinating, complex, full of stories, myths and constant rehabilitation.

Museu do Acrópole – Atenas, Grécia

Nota: O Museu mudou de localização – ver nota no final do post
Dentro do complexo da Acrópole podemos visitar o seu museu, nele estão colocadas muitas peças encontradas neste local como as esculturas originais das Cariátides que decoram o Erechtheion, são também conhecidas como Korai (virgens). No museu apenas estão cinco, a sexta foi recolhida por um Lord inglês e está exposta no British Museum.

Within the complex of the Acropolis we can visit it’s museum, there are many pieces put found on this site like the original sculptures that decorate the Caryatids of the Erechtheion, are also known as Korai (maidens). In the museum are only five, the sixth was collected by an English Lord and is in the British Museum.

Santorini – Grécia

Saímos de Creta para visitar Santorini, onde acabámos por confirmar: ter feito o cruzeiro foi um erro. Tínhamos três horas para conhecer a ilha, sendo que para subir com as filas que estavam íamos demorar 1 hora e para descer outro tanto. Resultado: 1 hora para explorar a conhecida e bela Santorini. Deu para comprar um “bouzouki”, passear na parte mais alta da ilha para apreciar as vistas e pouco mais, o resto do tempo foi gasto num “desperdicio” chamado: fila de espera para o teleférico.
We left Crete to visit Santorini, where we finally confirmed it: doing the cruise was a mistake. We had three hours to see the island, and go come up with the queues that were there it would take 1 hour to descend as much. Result: 1 hour to explore the famous and beautiful Santorini. There was enough time to buy a “bouzouki”, stroll on the highest part of the island to enjoy the sights and not much else, the rest of the time was spent on a “waste” called: queue for the chairlift.

Foi a nossa próxima paragem, felizmente nesta ilha tínhamos um dia inteiro para visitá-la, como não era muito grande decidimos fazê-lo de mota, alugámos assim que saímos do barco.

Quisémos ir primeiro á outra ponta da ilha, Lindos. E a principio devo admitir que não estava a dar muito por Rhodes porque fomos pela estrada da zona Norte e não parecia fantástica, mas assim que vislumbramos um paraíso…com as suas lagoas de água azul quase caribenha, com o seu castelo, com as suas ruelas cheias de charme e com a Acrópole. Tudo isto num espacinho só que curiosamente se chama…Lindos, faz jus ao nome.

It was our next stop, fortunately this island had a whole day to visit her, as it was not too big we decided to do it by motorbike, so we rented the boat left.
We wanted to go first to the other end of the island, Lindos. And at first I must admit I was not giving much for Rhodes because we were on the road in the North and did not look fantastic, but once you envision … a paradise with its blue water lagoons almost Caribbean, with its castle, with narrow streets full of charm and the Acropolis. All this in a small space that only … curiously called Lindos, lives up to its name.

PATMOS – GRÉCIA

E devo um pedido de desculpas a Patmos porque na realidade não a entendi muito bem, pareceu-me uma ilha perdida no meio de muitas ilhas gregas com tanto glamour e paisagens bonitas que de repente Patmos parece triste e demasiado simples.
O cruzeiro organizava uma visita turistica pela ilha que básicamente se resumia a subir até ao Mosteiro e visitá-lo com um guia.

And I owe an apology to Patmos because in reality I didn’t quite understand it, seemed a lost island in the middle of many Greek islands with both glamor and beautiful landscapes that made Patmos suddenly look sad and too simple.
The cruise organized a tourist visit of the island that basically boiled down to climb up to the Monastery and visit it with a guide.



 
Decidimos poupar aqui uns cobres e pagámos 1€ cada um pela subida num autocarro local, o que acabou por ser fantástico e conhecer o lado B da ilha.
Para visitar o mosteiro ortodoxo, eu tive que vestir uma saia ou um “saco de batatas” para cobrir as pernas como sinal de respeito.
O mosteiro em si era pequenino e apertadinho, principalmente quando todo o cruzeiro estava lá dentro a ouvir o guia que pagaram, nós também ouvimos e á borla.
A vista desde o alto onde “plantaram” o mosteiro era soberba e realmente só quando chegamos lá acima é que realmente apreciamos a simplicidade da ilha e talvez, a sua grande honestidade, é o que é e pronto.
Em baixo antes de voltar ao cruzeiro ainda aproveitámos para tirar umas fotos no zona piscatória. 

We decided to save a few coins here and we paid € 1 each to get up by a local bus, which turned out to be fantastic and know the B side of the island.
To visit the Orthodox monastery, I had to wear a skirt or a “sack of potatoes” to cover the legs as a sign of respect.
The monastery itself was tiny and tight, especially when the entire cruise was inside listening to the guide they paid, we will also hear and tassel.
The view from the top where they “planted” the monastery was superb and really only when we got up there we really appreciate the simplicity of the island and perhaps his great honesty, is what it is and that’s it.
Down before returning to the cruise we took advantage of the extra time to take some pictures in fishing area.

Chora é o centro de Mykonos. É nesta zona que podemos ver a “Little Venice” e também os famosos moinhos que são outro símbolo da ilha. Os primeiros foram construídos pelos venezianos e de onde estão podemos contemplar o pôr-do-sol junto a Little Venice.
Entrando no centro em si, sentimos a verdadeira essência de Mykonos. As ruas são estreitas, têm muito comércio e habitação.
Chora is the center of Mykonos. It is in this area that we can see the “Little Venice” and also the famous windmills that are another symbol of the island. The first were built by the Venetians and from there we can admire the sunset near Little Venice.
Entering the center itself, we feel the true essence of Mykonos. The streets are narrow, they have much commerce and houses.

Este deve ser o “monumento” mais estranhei sobre o qual alguma vez fiz um post, mas eu acho que este pelicano merece um post só para ele afinal é considerado um dos símbolos de Mykonos e é talvez um dos mais fotografados da ilha.
Não admira que seja a sua mascota oficial, já que é sem dúvida um dos elementos mais hospitaleiros da ilha. Ainda assim eu dispensei as festinhas, não sou grande fã de animais com bico. 

This must be the most strange “monument” about which I ever made ​​a post, but I think this pelican deserves a  post because after all he is considered a symbol of Mykonos and is perhaps one of the most photographed island.
No wonder it is their official mascot, as it is undoubtedly one of the most hospitable  in the island. Still I dismissed the little parties, I am not a big fan of animals with beak.

Reza a história (há 40 anos atrás) que um pescador encontrou um pelicano ferido na ilha, decidiu cuidar dele e soltá-lo para que voltasse a “casa”, no entanto o pelicano considerou Mykonos a sua nova casa e nunca mais se foi embora. Esse foi o primeiro Petros, que entretanto morreu e logo procuraram um substituto que é o que hoje percorre as ruas de Mykonos sem qualquer medo da onda de turistas que se amontoa á sua volta.

The story says (40 years ago) that a fisherman found a wounded pelican on the island, decided to look after him and release him to go back “home”, however the pelican  tought of Mykonos as his new home and never went away . This was the first Petros, who however died and soon they sought a replacement that is what today walks the streets of Mykonos without any fear of the wave of tourists that piles up around you.

Omonia Grand Hotel – Atenas, Grécia

Quando estivémos em Atenas ficámos sempre neste hotel, o Omonia Grand Hotel localizado na praça com o mesmo nome.
A verdade é que está numa zona relativamente central, porque andámos muito a pé e do hotel fomos até Plaka, até á Acrópole e até ao Parlamento, demorávamos uns 15 ou 20 minutos.
When we were in Athens we were always in this hotel, the Grand Hotel Omonia located in a square of the same name.
The truth is that it is a relatively central area, because we always walked everywhere from the hotel we got to Plaka, the Acropolis and up until the Parliament, it would takes about 15 or 20 minutes.
