Ao centro da Plaza Charco está um Taro também conhecido como inhame ou inhame dos Açores da familia das Araceae, é esta pequena árvore colocada ao centro de uma fonte que é o símbolo da praça.
É uma das mais importantes e mais centrais de Puerto de la Cruz, onde se pode dar um passeio, levar crianças a brincar no parque, tomar um copo numa esplanada ao lado, comer num dos seus restaurantes e fazer compras.
 
At the center of the Plaza Charco is a Taro also known as yam or yam Azores from the family of Araceae, this small tree is placed at the center of a fountain that is the symbol of the square.
It is one of the most important and central squares of Puerto de la Cruz, where you can take a walk, take the kids play in the park, have a drink on a terrace, eat in its restaurants and do some shopping. 

Chamam-lhe de Charco porque em dias de tempestade costumava ficar inundada. Encontrei-a depois de descer a Calle Quintana, uma rua pedestre que liga esta praça á zona do passeio marítimo de San Telmo.
 
They call it Charco because on stormy days it used to be flooded. I found it after getting off the Calle Quintana, a pedestrian street that connects this square with the promenade of San Telmo.

Este complexo de piscinas foi criado como uma alternativa ás praias de areia vulcânica e na época que visitámos Tenerife, julgo ser também uma alternativa ás ondas que atraem surfistas mas poucos banhistas.
Foram inauguradas no inicio da década de 70 e desenhadas por César Manrique, um conhecido arquitecto e artista de Lanzarote.
 
The pool complex was created as an alternative to the volcanic sand beaches and at the time we visited Tenerife, I think it’s also an alternative to the waves that attract surfers but few swimmers.
Were opened at the beginning of the 70’s and designed by Cesar Manrique, a well-known architect and artist from Lanzarote.

 
A entrada não era gratuita (creio que são 3,5€ por pessoa) e como o tempo não convidava a banhos apenas visitámos por fora. Deu para perceber a sua dimensão porque caminhávamos pelo passeio junto ao mar e continuávamos a ver as piscinas. O complexo conta com um grande lago central e várias piscinas de água salgada. Ao longe consigo ver o monumento das ondas que está na zona central.
 
The entry was not free (I think it’s 3,5€ por person) and as the weather did not appeal to have a bath I only visited the outside. I could tell its great size because we walked along the promenade by the sea and we continued to see the pools. The complex features a large central lake and several saltwater pools. In the distance I can see the monument of  waves standing in the central zone.

A primeira vez que entrei nesta praça estava numa azáfama. Havia um mercado medieval com figurantes, as janelas decoradas com os brasões de nobreza, câmaras, cabos a passar por todo o lado e uma equipa de produção enorme que nos ia gritando para passarmos depressa. Estavam a filmar cenas da série sobre a rainha espanhola Isabel I. Ainda conseguimos vê-la no seu cavalo branco ao lado de Fernando. E está claro porque escolheram este local para filmar uma parte da vida dos Reis Católicos que viveram no século XV, não necessitavam de alterar nada, Pedraza e em particular esta praça mantém o seu traçado medieval.
 
The first time I walked in this place was a bustle. There was a medieval market with extras, windows decorated with the coats of arms of nobility, cameras, cables going everywhere and a huge production team we went screaming to move quickly. They were filming scenes series about the Spanish Queen Isabella I. Still could see it on his white horse alongside Fernando. And it’s clear why they chose this place to film a part of the life of the Catholic Kings who lived in the fifteenth century did not need to change anything, Pedraza and in particular this square retains its medieval layout.

É aqui que se concentram os que visitam Pedraza, nos seus cafés e restaurantes este é o ponto mais animado desta pequena vila. Sem dúvida, este é um dos lugares medievais melhor conservados de Espanha, onde podemos ver o pequeno edificio do “ayuntamiento” e a Igreja de S. João Baptista.
 
It is here that those Pedraza gather, in it’s cafes and restaurants this is the most exciting place of the small village. Undoubtedly, this is one of the best preserved medieval places of Spain, where we can see the small building of theo “ayuntamiento”  (town hall) and the St. João Baptista church.

Pedraza tinha ficado na nossa memória durante algum tempo, o frio parece dar menos vontade de visitá-la mas foi justamente por ele que decidimos ir. Ia com a ideia de que estaria coberta de neve porque ali perto, Segóvia estava branquinha. Não tivémos essa sorte mas foi muito bom visitar Pedraza e mais ainda o seu Castelo.
Encontrá-lo é fácil, basta procurar o lugar mais alto. A visita é guiada e pagámos 6€ por pessoa.
Pedraza had been in our minds for a while, the cold seems to make us less inclined to visit it but that was precisely why we decided to go. We went with the idea that it would be covered in snow because nearby, Segovia was white. No such luck but we had a good time visiting Pedraza and even more it’s castle.
Finding it is easy, just look for the highest place. The visit is guided and we paid 6€ per person.

O nosso guia começou por explicar dados da história da sua construção, a primeira é de XIII e nota-se através dos diferentes arcos que se podiam ver no Castelo como um ogival já de um periodo gótico e outro anterior que seria do período românico. Podemos descer até aos calabouços e dizia o guia que estiveram presos aquí os filhos do rei de França, Francisco I.

Na história mais recente do Castelo fica a sua compra por parte do pintor Ignacio Zuloaga que fez obras de reabilitação e utilizou como atelier. Talvez fosse a sua fantástica vista que o fez apaixonar-se pelo Castelo, ou o traçado medieval que ainda hoje Pedraza conserva. Hoje é a sua Fundação que o mantém vivo, com zonas remodeladas onde podemos ver alguns dos seus quadros e esboços.

Our guide began by explaining the history of its construction, the first is from the XIII century and you can notice it through the different arcs that  we could see in the castle like a ogival from the Gothic period and a previous one from Romanesque period. We can go down to the dungeons and our tour guide tolds us that the sons of the king of France, Francis I, were imprisioned here.
In a more recent history of the castle it was purchase by the painter Ignacio Zuloaga who did a rehabilitation work and used it as a studio. Perhaps it was it’s fantastic views that made him fall in love with Castle, or the medieval layout that still retains Pedraza. Todayit’s his foundation that keeps it alive, with remodeled areas where we can see some of his paintings and sketches. 

Perguntei ao guia se as filmagens da série Isabel I (uma série sobre os Reis Católicos da TVE que foi um sucesso aqui em Espanha) que tiveram lugar em Pedraza utilizaram o Castelo, respondeu que sim e até indicou os episódios mas ainda não tive oportunidade de revê-los.
No final e apesar de termos gostado ficou a sensação de ter pagado muito para ver pouco.

I asked the guide if the shooting of the series Elizabeth I (a series on the Catholic Monarchs of TVE that was a hit here in Spain) held in Pedraza also took place in the Castle,he said yes and told us the episodes but we haven’t had the opportunity to review them.
In the end and although we liked there was the feeling of having paid a lot for very little to see.

Dizem que em equipa vencedora não se mexe por isso quando fomos passear a Pedraza não quisémos arriscar e voltámos a comer no El Soportal. Não é seguramente o melhor restaurante desta vila medieval que tem uma excelente oferta para a sua dimensão, mas na realidade não queríamos gastar muito dinheiro e sabemos que grande parte são caros.
Este tem um menú de degustação de 27€ por pessoa que inclui bebida e sobremesa.
 
They say you don’t change a winning team so when we went to Pedraza we did not want to risk it and we returned to eat at El Soportal. There is certainly the better restaurants on this medieval town that has a great offer for its size, but in reality we did not want to spend much money and we know that most are expensive.
This has a tasting menu 27€ per person which includes beverage and dessert. 

 
Ocupam dois edificios dos século XVI na Plaza Mayor de Pedraza e o seu interior é rústico mas simples. Logo ao subir as escadas vemos o forno a lenha onde fazem o cordeiro assado, a sua especialidade.
Quanto a menú de entradas serviam “matanza” que é feita com carne de porco, morcela de arroz e “croquetas”. Já estávamos satisfeitos quando veio um prato que faltavam os “judiones”, uma feijoada feita com uns feijões de dimensões astronómicas.
O prato principal era claro um cordeiro que vinha acompanhado de uma salada e por fim as sobremesas caseiras. O pudim estava óptimo.
 
It occupies two buildings in the sixteenth century Plaza Mayor de Pedraza and its interior is rustic but simple. Right up the stairs we see the wood oven where they roast lamb, their specialty.
As for the menu entrees they served “matanza” which is made with pork, rice “morcilla” and “croquetas”. We were already pleased when there was another dish missing the “judiones” a feijoada made with some beans of some astronomical proportions.
The main course was lamb accompanied with a salad and finally the homemade desserts. The pudding was great.

Praça do Obradoiro – Santiago de Compostela, Espanha

Temos que admitir que não fomos os melhores “peregrinos” em Santiago de Compostela. É quase obrigatório entrar na Catedral pela Praça de Obradoiro e nós não o fizémos, aliás só vimos esta famosa Praça justamente da escadaria da porta principal do local de culto ao apóstolo Santiago. E é de facto a melhor forma de a conhecer, daquele ponto mais alto podemos ver o Palacio de Raxoi, o Colégio de S. Jerónimo e o Hostal dos Reyes Católicos.
 
We must admit that we were not the best “pilgrims” in Santiago de Compostela. It is almost mandatory to enter the Cathedral through the Plaza de Obradoiro and we did not, in fact we just saw this famous Square from the steps of the front door of the place of worship of the Apostle Santiago. And it is indeed the best way to discover it, from that highest point we can see the Palacio de Raxoi, the College of St. Jerome and the Hostal Reyes of Catholics.

Devo admitir que marquei este hotel em Santiago de Compostela como quem faz uma compra por impulso. Pesquisei no booking.com vários preços e a única condição que tinha era que ficasse no centro histórico, quando me apareceu o Casas Reais e vi fotos dos quartos marquei logo mesmo sabendo que não era a opção mais barata.
 
I must admit that I booked this hotel in Santiago de Compostela as who makes an impulse purchase. Researched various prices on booking.com and the only condition was that we had to stay in the historic center, when saw the Casas Reais (Royal Houses) bedroom potos I dediced to book it even though it was not the cheapest option.

Levava uma lista de restaurantes onde comer em Santiago de Compostela, este era um deles vinha até no guia do Lonely Planet e depois da recomendação da senhora do hotel onde ficámos não podíamos deixar de o conhecer. Problema: estava escandalosamente cheio! Tal era a coisa que tínhamos que esperar uma hora. “Não faz mal”, dissémos. Vamos só ali á Catedral e já voltamos. Se estava assim de cheio talvez merecesse a espera…

 
I carried a list of restaurants where to eat in Santiago de Compostela, this was one of them that came up in the Lonely Planet guide and after the recommendation of the lady from the hotel where we were staying we had to know it. Problem: it was outrageously full! Such was the thing we had to wait an hour. “It’s OK,” we said. We will just visit the Cathedral. If it was so full that it perhaps deserved the wait …

CATEDRAL DE SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA, ESPANHA

Dou voltas e voltas a pensar qual o grande encanto de Santiago de Compostela para os que não compartem a fé Cristã. Voltas e voltas a pensar qual é o real interesse da Catedral de Santiago que faz pessoas percorrerem quilómetros e quilómetros a pé para aqui chegarem. Para os que têm fé, para os que acreditam que ali estão na presença de um Apóstolo que comeu ao lado de Jesús Cristos faz todo o sentido e não haverá tantos lugares como este no mundo, mas e os outros?
Eu diría que o mesmo, sejas ou não cristão é impossível ficar indiferente á Catedral e á história que conta, impossível não ter vontade de entrar mesmo arriscando a perder mesa no restaurante que reservámos e nem é das mais bonitas que vimos, mas há todo um respeito e dedicação á sua volta que faz sentir o mesmo.
 
I go round and round thinking what is the great charm of Santiago de Compostela for those who do not share the Christian faith. Round and round thinking what is the real interest of the Cathedral of Santiago that makes people roam miles and miles on foot to reach here. For those who have faith, to those who believe that they are in the presence of an Apostle who ate beside Jesus Christ it makes total sense and there won’t be many places like this in the world, but what about the others?
I would say the same, wether you are Christian or not it’s impossible to remain indifferent to the Cathedral and to the story it tells, impossible not to want to get in even risking losing the table  we booked at the restaurant and it’s not even the nicest we’ve seen, but there is a whole respect and dedication around it that makes you feel the same.

É talvez a maior praça da parte histórica de Pontevedra e uma das mais movimentadas já que dá acesso a ruas importantes como a dos Soportais por exemplo. A chuva afastou a gente do habitual convívio na praça.
Deve o seu nome aos ferreiros que tinham as suas lojas debaixo das arcadas dos edificios de traçado medieval, hoje são bares e restaurantes.
 
It is perhaps the largest square in the historic part of Pontevedra and already one of the busiest streets giving access to important as the Soportais for example. The rain had the usual crowd avoid the gathering in the square.
It owes its name to the blacksmiths who had their shops under the arcades of the Medieval buildings, where now you can see bars and restaurants.

No centro da praça estava uma fonte do século XVI seguindo um modelo de chafariz português e que tinha o mesmo nome da praça, em 1930 mudaram-na para os jardins que estão junto ao Convento de São Francisco. É aliás deste convento que temos uma das melhores vistas para a praça.
A sensação de que é maior do que a realidade vem de estar colada a duas outras praças, a Ourense e a Estrela.
Como fomos no Natal ainda vimos a árvore iluminada e uma mensagem de Bom Natal com umas letras grandes que no dia seguinte já não as vimos colocadas.
 
In the center of the square was a fountain of the sixteenth century following a model of a Portuguese “chafariz” (fountain) and had the same name of the square, in 1930 moved on to the gardens that are near the Convent of San Francisco. It is indeed from this convent we have one of the best views of the square.
The sense that is greater than the reality is because of the two other squares close to it, the Ourense and the Estrella.
Has we went during Christmas times we saw the tree still lit and a Merry Christmas message with large letters that the next day was taken out.
