Talvez seja das praças que mais gente visita sem saber exactamente o seu nome, creio que estar ao lado do Palácio Real cujo protagonismo faz esquecer a sua beleza. O seu pequeno jardim em forma de parterre de estilo barroco vai dando abrigo a muitos turistas ou locais que procuram ali um espaço para descansar ou relaxar. Mas há outras maneiras de fazer, á sua volta estão alguns restaurantes com excelentes esplanadas ou “terraza” como se diz por aqui.
Perhaps it is the squares that most people visit without knowing exactly its name, I believe to be next to the Royal Palace whose protagonism makes everyone forget its beauty. Its small garden in the shape of a baroque style parterre gives shelter many tourists or locals looking for a place to rest or relax. But there are other ways to do it, around the square are some restaurants with excellent terraces or “terraza” as they say here.
Na ponta oposta ao Palácio está o Teatro Real. Remodelado em 1997 e com a presença habitual da Familia Real Espanhola, o teatro apresenta sempre um cartaz de luxo, seja em ballet ou ópera. Ao centro uma estátua equestre do Rei Felipe IV, desenhada por Velázquez com execução do escultor Pietro Tacca. Diz a placa que foi Isabel II quem mandou colocar aqui o monumento, para glória das artes e ornato da capital. Na realidade foi o próprio Felipe que mandou fazer a estátua que estava num antigo pátio do palácio que hoje não existe, queria que fosse grandiosa, mais que a do seu pai que está colocada ao centro da Plaza Mayor.
At the opposite end of the Palace is the Teatro Real. Remodeled in 1997 and with the usual presence of the Spanish Royal Family, the theater always presents a luxury cast, either in ballet or opera. In the center is an equestrian statue of King Philip IV, designed by Velázquez with execution of the sculptor Pietro Tacca. The sign says that it was Isabel II who ordered to place here the monument, for the glory of the arts and the capital’s adornment. In fact, it was Felipe himself who ordered the statue to be made, which was in an old courtyard of the palace that does not exist today, he wanted it to be grand, more than that of his father who is placed in the center of the Plaza Mayor.
A rodear o jardim estátuas de reis espanhóis, desde os visigodos até aos primeiros reis católicos que terminaram com o dominio árabe em terras espanholas. Uma das estátuas é de uma rainha, D. Sancha de Léon que viveu no século XI. Do outro lado da praça estão as restantes estátuas, entre elas esta de Iñigo Arista, Rei de Pamplona que viveu no século IX.
Com tanta história concentrada num só espaço, a refinada e ampla praça é uma das mais interessantes da cidade. Passam por aqui muitos artistas de rua, nem todos muito originais é certo mas de vez em quando há um que surpreende, um homem estátua original ou um músico que toca harpa numa melodia de levar lágrimas aos olhos. A intenção é que o espaço fosse uma celebração da arte e creio que continua a ser.
Around the garden are statues of Spanish kings, from the Visigoths to the first Catholic kings who ended with Arab rule in Spanish lands. One of the statues is of a queen, D. Sancha de Leon who lived in the eleventh century. On the other side of the square are the remaining statues, among them the one of Iñigo Arista, King of Pamplona who lived in the ninth century.
With so much history concentrated in a single space, the refined and wide square is one of the most interesting in the city. There are a lot of street performers here, not all of them very original, but every once in a while there is one that surprises, an original statue man or a musician who plays the harp in a melody to bring tears to his eyes. The intention is that space was a celebration of art and I believe it remains.
