Na agenda da nossa reunião havia espaço para tempo livre e algumas recomendações de como ocupá-lo, o Café de Paris era uma delas. Achei interesante a ideia de haver uma pequena parte de Paris na ilha ainda que um pouco exagerada.
Devo confessar que quando vi o Café pela primeira vez estava a anoitecer o excesso de luzes e cor fez-me pensar que de Paris não tinha assim muito. Durante o dia, as suas cadeiras e decoração lembram de facto os cafés de rua da cidade da luz.
 
On the agenda of our meeting there was room for free time and some recommendations on how to fill it, Café de Paris was one of them. I found interesting the idea of there being a small part of Paris on the island although somewhat exaggerated.
I must confess that when I first saw this place it was getting darker and the excessive lights and color made ​​me think that it had nothing to do with Paris. During the day, their chairs and decor do reminiscent  the street cafes of the city of lights.

É um café pastelaria com os tradicionais doces franceses que também vende pão e serve refeições e claro está estava cheio dos melhores clientes desta zona da ilha, pessoas dos sessenta anos para cima. Além disso tem ainda bastante animação principalmente durante a noite com pequenos espectáculos de música ao vivo e salão de baile.
 
It’s a coffee pastry house with traditional French pastries that also sells bread and serves meals and of course was full of the best customers in this area of ​​the island, people over sixty years old. Besides that it has plenty of entertainment especially at night with small live music performances and a ballroom.

Convém explicar antes de tudo, que a minha visita a Tenerife Norte foi a trabalho. Fomos para uma reunião da empresa onde ficámos hospedados neste hotel cujo local não foi escolhido por mim. Dito isto queria deixar aqui registado para o caso de me esquecer e contemplar uma viagem em familia a Tenerife que só voltarei a este hotel quando tiver uns setenta anos, só assim me sentirei em casa. Não foi porque o hotel fosse mau mas porque grande parte dos que ali estavam alojados andavam nessa faixa etária.
 
First of all I should explain that the my visit to Tenerife was for work. We went for a company meeting where we were staying in this hotel whose location was not chosen by me. That said I wanted to leave recorded here in case I forget and if contemplating a family trip to Tenerife only to return to this hotel when we have around seventy years, just so I’ll feel right at home. It was not because it was bad but because much of their guests were at this age group.

 
Para mim a grande vantagem deste hotel é a sua localização, a pouco mais de dez minutos a pé está o centro de Puerto de la Cruz, em frente á uma Praia e o famoso Lago Martiánez. Tinha duas piscinas num espaço que não achei muito grande e o restaurante virado para o mar onde a comida servida era “buffet” e a verdade é que não era muito mau.
O mais negativo foi mesmo a qualidade dos quartos que necessitam de remodelação. Colegas que visitaram a ilha dizem que a zona de Tenerife Norte é mais instável em termos de tempo e que muitos acabavam por trocar para o Sul para não estragar as férias, ainda assim vale a pena visitar o centro de Puerto de la Cruz e como digo, este hotel poderá ser um sitio a considerar quando me reformar.
 
For me the big advantage of this hotel is its location, just over ten minutes walk is the center of Puerto de la Cruz, it’s in front of the beach and the famous Lake Martiánez. It has two pools in a space that found not very large and the restaurant facing the sea where food was served in a buffet and the truth is that it was not too bad.
The most negative was the quality of the rooms that need remodeling. Colleagues who visited the island say that the area of ​​Tenerife north is more unstable in terms of weather and that many of them moved to the South to save the rest of their holidays but it is still worth visiting the center of Puerto de la Cruz and as I say this hotel may be a place to consider when I retire.

Ao centro da Plaza Charco está um Taro também conhecido como inhame ou inhame dos Açores da familia das Araceae, é esta pequena árvore colocada ao centro de uma fonte que é o símbolo da praça.
É uma das mais importantes e mais centrais de Puerto de la Cruz, onde se pode dar um passeio, levar crianças a brincar no parque, tomar um copo numa esplanada ao lado, comer num dos seus restaurantes e fazer compras.
 
At the center of the Plaza Charco is a Taro also known as yam or yam Azores from the family of Araceae, this small tree is placed at the center of a fountain that is the symbol of the square.
It is one of the most important and central squares of Puerto de la Cruz, where you can take a walk, take the kids play in the park, have a drink on a terrace, eat in its restaurants and do some shopping. 

Chamam-lhe de Charco porque em dias de tempestade costumava ficar inundada. Encontrei-a depois de descer a Calle Quintana, uma rua pedestre que liga esta praça á zona do passeio marítimo de San Telmo.
 
They call it Charco because on stormy days it used to be flooded. I found it after getting off the Calle Quintana, a pedestrian street that connects this square with the promenade of San Telmo.

Este complexo de piscinas foi criado como uma alternativa ás praias de areia vulcânica e na época que visitámos Tenerife, julgo ser também uma alternativa ás ondas que atraem surfistas mas poucos banhistas.
Foram inauguradas no inicio da década de 70 e desenhadas por César Manrique, um conhecido arquitecto e artista de Lanzarote.
 
The pool complex was created as an alternative to the volcanic sand beaches and at the time we visited Tenerife, I think it’s also an alternative to the waves that attract surfers but few swimmers.
Were opened at the beginning of the 70’s and designed by Cesar Manrique, a well-known architect and artist from Lanzarote.

 
A entrada não era gratuita (creio que são 3,5€ por pessoa) e como o tempo não convidava a banhos apenas visitámos por fora. Deu para perceber a sua dimensão porque caminhávamos pelo passeio junto ao mar e continuávamos a ver as piscinas. O complexo conta com um grande lago central e várias piscinas de água salgada. Ao longe consigo ver o monumento das ondas que está na zona central.
 
The entry was not free (I think it’s 3,5€ por person) and as the weather did not appeal to have a bath I only visited the outside. I could tell its great size because we walked along the promenade by the sea and we continued to see the pools. The complex features a large central lake and several saltwater pools. In the distance I can see the monument of  waves standing in the central zone.

Este lugar marcou para sempre a minha infância, se houvesse alguma história de princesas era este o palácio que eu imaginava, era no topo de uma das suas janelas que a Julieta suspirava pelo Romeo. Era de conto de fadas.
Tive a sorte de o visitar várias vezes e numa das minhas últimas idas a Portugal voltei a fazê-lo. Construído no século XIX, está aberto ao público como museu onde podemos ver peças que pertenciam aos Condes para além de uma exposição sobre a pré-história em Cascais. Dividi o post em dois, o primeiro será sobre o Palácio e o segundo sobre o Museu.
This place has forever marked my childhood, if there was any princess story this was the palace I imagined, it was at the top of one of his windows that Juliet sighed for Romeo. It was a fairy tale.
I was fortunate to visit it several times and in one of my last trips to Portugal I did it again. Built in the nineteenth century, it is open to the public as a museum where you can see pieces that belonged to the Counts in addition to an exhibit of the prehistory era in Cascais. I split the post into two, the first will be on the Palace and the second about the Museum.

NOTA: Quando visitámos este hotel o seu nome era Viva Marinha
Apesar de o colocar numa categoria de “sleep” a verdade é que nunca dormimos neste hotel e é a terceira vez que o visitamos. A primeira vez foi para uma reunião de equipa, a segunda para uma convenção da empresa onde me despedi de todos e parti para Madrid e a última foi no inicio deste mês em que decidi “alugar” um apartamento por um dia para fazer uma festa de aniversario. Foi uma excelente escolha e todos os que foram á festa adoraram a ideia.
 
Although placed in a category of “sleep” the truth is that we never slept in this hotel and it is the third time we visited. The first time was for a team meeting, the second with our company to a convention where I said goodbye to everyone and left for Madrid and the last was at the beginning of this month when I decided to “rent” an apartment for a day to make a birthday party . It was an excellent choice and all who have been to the party loved the idea.

Já não temos casa em Portugal, não queríamos utilizar a casa dos familiares porque queríamos convidar muita gente, não quisemos alugar um daqueles espaço de festas para crianças porque na realidade eram poucas e para irem avós e bisavós precisávamos de um espaço confortável e por isso não foi difícil escolher este hotel cujos apartamentos ficaram sempre na memoria. “Home away from home”, é sempre o que te “vendem” os hotéis e o Viva Marinha faz isso na perfeição.
Foi a melhor festa de anos que podíamos fazer a um miúdo de cinco anos, estava toda a familia e amigos com filhos, lá fora um pequeno jardim permitia que jogassem futebol e quando o frio apertou eu tinha jogos no espaçoso interior. A comida ficou por nossa conta, na televisão passávamos fotos desde que tinha nascido até hoje e nos sofás as pessoas estavam cómodas e entretidas.
É uma excelente opção para quem quer fazer uma festa e não tem casa para isso. A simpatia dos empregados e o facto de não se intrometerem em nada da festa, o facto de no fim a limpeza estar (felizmente) incluída na conta.
 
We no longer have a house in Portugal, we did not want to use any family house because we wanted to invite a lot of people and we did not want to rent a space for parties for children because there were actually few childrens and we had invinted grandparents and great-grandparents so we needed a comfortable space and therefore it was not difficult to choose this hotel whose rooms were always in my memory. “Home away from home” it’s always what the hotels “sell” to you and the Viva Marinha do it perfectly.
It was the best birthday party we could do to a five year old kid, with all the family and friends, outside a small garden allowed them to play football and when it got cold we had games in the spacious interior. The food was on our own, on the television we put some pictures from when he was born until today and people were comfortable and entertained in the sofas.
It is an excellent option for those who want to party and have no home for it. The friendliness of the employees and the fact that they don’t meddle in anything from the party and also that in the end the cleaning is (thankfully) included in the bill.
 
Ficámos com pena de não ter aceitado o extra para dormir no hotel, teríamos adorado. Os quartos são um luxo ou não fosse um cinco estrelas, mas o orçamento não dava para tudo. Creio que será uma boa solução para a passagem de ano por exemplo.
 
We were sorry for not having accepted the extra to sleep in the hotel, we would have loved it. The rooms are a luxury because this is a five star, but the our budget couldn’t cover it. I think it will be a good solution for the New Year for example.
O hotel é espectacular, a zona de refeições tem muita luz, tem SPA e um jardim de perder de vista. Uma pena o preço das estadias não se enquadrar muito com o nosso orçamento familiar ou os nossos fins de semana em Portugal teriam uma casa diferente, mais espaçosa pelo menos.
 
The hotel is spectacular, the dining area has plenty of light, has a spa and a garden to loose sight off. Too bad the Price of the bedrooms don’t fit in our family budget or our weekends in Portugal would have a different home, at least more spacious.

Os italianos têm o “ristorante”, a “trattoria” e a “osteria”, o que os define é o tipo de comida que servem e se o ambiente é mais ou menos formal. Uma “osteria” está no fim da linha, serve comida simples, em pequenas porções e a preços muito baratos é como a Timeout explica: uma tasca italiana. E quando entras na Osteria tens essa sensação de entra numa tasca mas eu até nem diría que seria uma italiana, até me pareceu bem portuguesa não fossem as molduras de publicidade e a sua carta de petiscos italianos.
 
The Italians have the “ristorante“, the “trattoria“ and “osteria“, what defines them is the type of food they serve and if the environment is more or less formal. A “osteria“ is at the end of the line, it serves simple food in small portions and the price is very cheap as the Timeout explains: an Italian tavern. And when you enter the Osteria you have that feeling of entering a tavern but I would not even say an Italian, Portuguese seemed good to me were not the frames of advertising and its letter of Italian food.

Fica na Rua das Madres na Madragoa e em dias de maior movimento é melhor reservar. Do que li sobre o restaurante diziam que á frente da cozinha estava uma italiana que trouxe de Turim algumas das receitas da sua terra e da sua familia. E confirma-se, ela estava lá e numa tentativa de falar português veio á nossa mesa pedir desculpa porque já não havia um dos pratos que pedimos. É uma tasca, mas um serviço assim é de cinco estrelas.
Não sabíamos o que escolher e pedimos que nos recomendassem, veio vitela com molho de atum e alcaparras, uma estranha mistura que funciona. Um risotto de camarões muito bom, almôndegas com molho de tomate e massa com bróculos e salsicha fresca. Tudo num conceito de partilha como as tapas por exemplo.
O que provámos estava bom, onde detaco o risotto e a tarte com mascarpone e frutos do bosque no final para três pessoas com sangria de limoncello pagámos menos de 60€.

What we tasted was good, where the highlight was the risotto and the mascarpone tart with wild berries at the end for three people with limoncello sangría we paid less than 60 €.

É talvez a maior praça da parte histórica de Pontevedra e uma das mais movimentadas já que dá acesso a ruas importantes como a dos Soportais por exemplo. A chuva afastou a gente do habitual convívio na praça.
Deve o seu nome aos ferreiros que tinham as suas lojas debaixo das arcadas dos edificios de traçado medieval, hoje são bares e restaurantes.
 
It is perhaps the largest square in the historic part of Pontevedra and already one of the busiest streets giving access to important as the Soportais for example. The rain had the usual crowd avoid the gathering in the square.
It owes its name to the blacksmiths who had their shops under the arcades of the Medieval buildings, where now you can see bars and restaurants.

No centro da praça estava uma fonte do século XVI seguindo um modelo de chafariz português e que tinha o mesmo nome da praça, em 1930 mudaram-na para os jardins que estão junto ao Convento de São Francisco. É aliás deste convento que temos uma das melhores vistas para a praça.
A sensação de que é maior do que a realidade vem de estar colada a duas outras praças, a Ourense e a Estrela.
Como fomos no Natal ainda vimos a árvore iluminada e uma mensagem de Bom Natal com umas letras grandes que no dia seguinte já não as vimos colocadas.

Seguíamos o Caminho Português para Santiago, entrámos pela Rua dos Soportais quando chegámos a esta Praça. Cedo começo a perceber que apesar de ser bonita no Inverno o Verão teria-lhe dado outra cara, as esplanadas estariam cheias, o sol impedia que os prédios parecessem tão cinzentos.
 
We followed the Portuguese Way to Santiago, we entered the Street of Soportais when we came to this square. Soon we start to realize that despite being beautiful in winter the summer would have given it another face, the terraces would be full, the sun prevented the buildings looking so gray. 

Outro ponto de interesse desta praça para além dos seus edificios históricos e das tais esplanadas que ficam cheias no Verão, será a fonte e a estátua de Alexandre Bóveda, um político galego que fundou o Partido Galeguista.
Também nela está o Casino Mercantil e Indústrial de Pontevedra, uma união mercantil criada por comerciantes e industriais com várias vantagens para os que se tornam sócios.
 
Another point of interest in this square beyond its historical buildings and those terraces that get crowded by the summer, there’s the fountain and a statue of Alexander Bóveda, a Galician politician who founded the Party Galeguista.

A Plaza de Verdura é a “irmã” do meio de um trio de praças que não se pode perder em Pontevedra: Leña, Verdura e Méndez Nuñez. Talvez não seja a mais bonita das três, mas é uma das mais animadas e o lugar de alguns dos bares de “picoteo” mais conhecidos da cidade como os Maristas ou o Pintxovino.
 
The Plaza de Verdura (greens or vegetables) is the “sister” from among a trio of squares that one should not miss in Pontevedra: Leña, Verdura and Méndez Nuñez. It may not be the prettiest of the three, but it’s one of the liveliest and the place of some of the most well known “picoteo” (snacking or eating “tapas”) bars like the Maristas or Pintxovino.

O que impressiona é que seja Inverno ou Verão, dia ou noite as esplanadas desta praça têm sempre gente, mas com melhor tempo as mesas e cadeiras invadem a praça dando-lhe um outro colorido.
Tal como a da Leña, está rodeada por pequenas casas de pedra e é nas suas arcadas que podemos ver os bares que a animam. Também nela se celebrava um mercado diário onde se vendiam verduras e fruta.
Ao fundo podemos ver o posto de Turismo instalado na Casa da Luz.
 
What is striking is wether it is summer or winter, day or night the terraces of this square always have people in them, but with better weather those tables and chairs invade the square giving it another color.
Like the Leña, it is  Also in it was celebrated a daily market where they sold vegetables and fruit.
In the background we can see the tourism office installed in the Casa da Luz (House of Light).
