Outra das ruas que visitei durante a minha curta estadia em Dublin foi esta Henry Street, uma das mais conhecidas ruas de compras da cidade e que é completamente pedonal.
Caminhava pela O’Connell street quando ao chegar a Spire of Dublin virei á direita seguindo uma boa quantidade de gente que passeava pela rua áquela hora. As lojas ainda estavam abertas (mas próximas do horário de fecho) e ainda deu para entrar em algumas. É interessante o contraste dos prédios de tijolo com as fachadas coloridas das lojas, principalmente das mais pequenas.
 
Another street that I visited during my short stay in Dublin was this Henry Street, one of the most famous shopping streets in the city and that is completely pedestrian.
Walked down O’Connell street and when I arrived to the Spire of Dublín I turned to the right following a good amount of people walking down the street at that hour. The shops were still open (but close to closing time) and I was able to visit a few. It is interesting to contrast of the brick buildings with colorful facades of the shops, especially the smaller ones.

Logo ao inicio, ao lado da Oficina de Turismo estava uma loja da famosa marca de chocolate irlandês, a Butlers. Não comprei aqui os seus famosos chocolates de luxo porque acabei por receber uma caixa de oferta na conferência onde estava mas a loja é toda uma experiência tentadora. 
 
Right at the start next to the Tourist Office there was a store of a famous Brand of Irish chocolates, the Butlers. I didn’t buy here the famous luxury chocolates because I ended up receiving a gift box at the conference where I was but the store is an tempting experience.
 
Grande parte das lojas que marcam presença nesta rua são de moda, marcas internacionais e mais locais, outras um pouco estranhas como uma loja que se chamava Sugarbabe que vendia roupa de gala mas que parecia saída de um catálogo de roupas para a Barbie dos anos 80. 
Ao lado a Carrolls uma conhecida loja de “souvenirs” irlandeses com tudo desde bonés, t-shirts, imans, panos de cozinha, bijuteria típicas do país e com uma zona dedicada a Guinness. 
 
Much of the stores that are present in this street are of fashion, international brands and some more local, others a bit strange as a store that was called Sugarbabe selling party dresses but that looked like it was coming out of a clothing catalog for Barbie in the 80’s .
Next to it the Carrolls a known Irish souvenir store with everything from hats, t–shirts, bags, kitchen towels, jewelry typical of the country and an area dedicated to Guinness.
 
 
Aqui podemos encontrar de tudo, desde lojas de moda como a Fat Face ou a River Island ou as “department stores” como a Arnotts e a Debenhams, que vendem desde artigos de decoração, mobiliário, cosmética, electrodomésticos, etc.. Não tive tempo para explorar tudo mas sempre é interessante visitar lojas que não sejam as que já conhecemos em Lisboa e também em Madrid.
Ainda nesta rua, a loja Penneys (conhecida em Portugal como Primark) ocupava um dos edificios mais interessantes. 
 
Here you can find everything from fashion stores such as Fat Face or River Island or the “department stores“ such as Arnotts and Debenhams, selling from home furnishings, furniture, cosmetics, appliances, etc. .. I didn’t had time to explore everything but its always interesting to visit shops that are those we already know in Lisbon or in Madrid.
Still in this street, the Penneys store (known in Portugal as Primark) occupied one of the most interesting buildings.

O nosso hotel ficava na Westmoreland street e bastava atravessar a Ponte O’Connell (1880) para chegar á agitada rua com o mesmo nome. Infelizmente o tempo estava tristonho e já era fim do dia, mas ainda assim havia muita gente pela rua, lojas abertas e afinal para o que se queixam os irlandeses de que sempre chove, conseguimos passear pela zona sem uma pinga.
A rua recebe o nome do senhor que vemos na primeira estátua que encontramos: Daniel O’Connell conhecido como o Libertador, um defensor nacionalista da Irlanda, mas ao longo da rua podemos encontrar outras estátuas.
 
Our hotel was on Westmoreland Street and just crossing the O’Connell Bridge(1880) you would be to get busy street with the same name. Unfortunately the weather was gloomy and it was end of the day, but still had a lot of people on the street, shops owere pen and ultimately if the Irish complain that it’s always raining, we walk around the area without a drop.
The street is named after the lord we see in the first statue: Daniel O’Connell known as the Liberator, a defender of a  nationalist Ireland, but along the street we can find other statues.

É uma zona com uma vibrante área comercial, onde em edificios emblemáticos da cidade estão instaladas lojas como a Clerys, uma “department store” que nasce no século XIX e cujo actual edificio é de 1922. Ou por exemplo a Eason uma loja de livros, jornais e revistas.
 
It’sa vibrant shopping area where in the iconic buildings from the city are located stores such as Clerys, a department store that opens in the nineteenth century and whose current building is from 1922. Or for example Eason a store of books, newspapers and magazines.

A outra estátua que podemos encontrar é a de Jim Larkin, outro activista e que foi o líder do sindicato inglês. Ao lado está o fantástico edificio dos Correios construído em 1818 com a sua fachada de inspiração grega com as famosas colunas jónicas. Quando o vi achei que seria a Câmara Municipal mas ao aproximar-me vi material de correios e fiquei fascinada com o edificio. 
 
The other statue that we can find is that of Jim Larkin, another activist and union leader. Next door is the fantastic Post office building built in 1818 with its Greek Revival facade with the famous Ionic columns. When I saw it I thought would be the City Council but as I approached I saw posting material and was fascinated with the building.
 
Ao centro da rua, está uma zona pedestre tipo “ramblas” mas mais pequena, é onde estão as estátuas mas também este monumento que não sei muito bem a que se refere, chamam-lhe a Spire of Dublin e tem 121 metros de altura. Dizem que é a maior escultura do mundo. 
Não segui muito mais pela rua, acabei por virar noutra pedestre, mas vi ao longe mais estátuas pelo que haverá mais homenagens a políticos irlandeses influentes. 
 
At the center of the street is a pedestrian zone like the “ramblas“ but smaller, is where are the statues but also this monument that I don’t  know very well what it referres to, it is called the Spire of Dublin and has 121 meters high. They say it’s the largest sculpture in the world.
I didn’t continue more in this street, I ended up turning to another pedestrian, but I saw far more statues so there will be more tributes to influential Irish politicians.

Guiness Storehouse – Dublin, Irlanda

Estive em Dublin a trabalho, não foi possível conhecer muito da cidade mas uma das coisas que tivémos oportunidade de fazer foi visitar a Guiness Storehouse no edificio de St. James Gate onde no século XVIII, Arthur Guiness produz a famosa cerveja com o mesmo nome.

I was in Dublin to work, it was not possible to visit much the city but one of things that we had opportunity to visit was the Guinness Storehouse in St. James Gate building where in the eighteenth century, Arthur Guinness produces the famous beer of the same name.

Se a minha viagem a Dublin tivesse sido de lazer não teria ficado neste hotel de cinco estrelas, teria escolhido algo mais barato até porque estaría a passear pela cidade e só lá entraría para dormir. Como fomos para uma reunião de trabalho em que fazíamos quase tudo no hotel o The Westin foi uma boa escolha mas cara!
Para além do luxo e do conforto, a sua localização é um dos pontos fortes.
 
If my trip to Dublin had been leisure I would not have stayed at this five stars hotel, I would have picked something cheaper because it would just to sleep since I would wander around the city all day. As we went to a workshop where we did almost everything in the hotel The Westin was a good choice but expensive!
Apart from the luxury and comfort, its location is one of the strengths.

Para quem não conhece o The Westin, uma das suas mais valias são as chamadas “Heavenly Beds” e quando me deitei numa pela primeira vez (em Vancouver) percebi rápidamente o porquê do nome, são as mais confortáveis que alguma vez dormi. E voltei a dormir lindamente em Dublín na tal cama divinal num quarto que não sendo grande era o suficiente para mim e com todas as comodidades que se espera de um bom hotel, simplesmente não sei se merecem cinco estrelas pelos quartos.
O hotel em si é extraordinário, instalado num edificio histórico tem por isso espaços muito interessantes como por exemplo o salão onde tivémos a nossa reunião ou o bar que eu via da janela do meu quarto.

For those not familiar with The Westin, one of their strengths is called “Heavenly Beds” and when I lay down in one for the first time (in Vancouver) I quickly realized why the name, it’s the most comfortable  bed I’ve ever slept in. And went back to sleep beautifully in Dublin in such heavenly bed in a room that was not big but enough for me and with all the amenities you would expect from a good hotel, just do not know if the rooms deserve the five-star.
The hotel itself is extraordinary, housed in a historic building has so much interesting spaces such as the lounge where we had our meeting or the bar that I saw from my bedroom window.
