Turista ou local, se há uma coisa que se deve fazer quando se visita Sintra é comer um travesseiro da Piriquita. Também é famosa pelas suas queijadas. Quando vivia em Portugal (Oeiras para ser precisa) este era o típico programa de Domingo á tarde: um passeio pelas ruelas do centro antigo de Sintra e depois sentarmo-nos na Piriquita (I ou II – há outra no fim da mesma rua) e comer um delicioso travesseiro.
Tourist or local, if there is one thing one should do when visiting Sintra is eat a “travesseiro” (a puff pastry cake filled with almonds with eggs and sugar) from Piriquita. It is also famous for its “queijadas”. When I lived in Portugal (Oeiras to be precise) this was the typical Sunday afternoon program: a stroll through the alleys of the old center of Sintra and then sit in Piriquita (I or II – there is another at the end of the same street) and aat a delicious travesseiro.
Tem nome de almofada e o que sentia quando o comia era um grande conforto. O seu aspecto não é do mais apelativo que já vimos e não tem o glamour de um cupcake por exemplo mas assim que provamos este pastel feito de massa folhada com o recheio de doce de ovos e amêndoas polvilhado com açúcar, sentimos que chegámos ao paraíso. E quentinhos são ainda melhores. Começou com a fábrica de queijadas fundada em 1862 por Constança Gomes Piriquita e ainda hoje é um negócio familiar. Eu fui ao Piriquita I and como o travesseiro não há muito glamour no espaço mas ao fim ao cabo também não me importava, queria comer um para matar saudades.
It has the name of a pillow and what it felt when it ate it was great comfort. Its looks are not the most appealing we have ever seen and do not have the glamor of a cupcake for example but as soon as we tasted this cake made of puff pastry with the filling of sweet eggs and almonds sprinkled with sugar, we feel that we have reached paradise. And if they are fresh made (hot) are even better. It began with the “queijadas” factory founded in 1862 by Constança Gomes Piriquita and is still a family business today. I went to Piriquita I and as the “travesseiro” there is not much glamor in the space but at the end I also did not care, I wanted to eat one to kill homesick.
E se está cheio nem vale a pena stressar, merecem o tempo de espera e o que recomendo é pedir para levar e depois sentar num miradouro, apreciar a vista enquanto se come um travesseiro ou uma queijada. Ao pé do Palácio por exemplo podemos sentar-nos e ter uma simpática vista para a Câmara Municipal. O travesseiro custa 1,25€ e a queijada 0,85€, os packs de queijadas eram 4,40€ e traziam 6 unidades.
And if it is full do not stress out, they deserve the waiting time and what I recommend is order to take out and then sit on a belvedere, enjoy the view while eating a “travesseiro” or a queijada. At the foot of the Palace for example we can sit and have a nice view of the City Hall. The “travesseiro” costs € 1.25 and the “queijada” € 0.85, the packs of queijadas € 4.40 and came with 6 units.
