Percorríamos a Via da Independência quando vimos a grande fachada de uma igreja e decidimos entrar. Tínhamos ido até Bolonha sem mapa, sem referências, sem nada…íamos á descoberta e foi assim que encontrámos a catedral da cidade, passeando casualmente por uma rua…Ao entrar percebemos que afinal era mais que uma igreja era a Catedral de Bolonha dedicada a São Pedro.
We walked the Via de la Independencia when we saw the great facade of a church and decided to enter. We had gone to Bologna without a map, without references, without anything … we went to the discovery and that is how we found the cathedral of the city, strolling casually along a street … On entering we realized that after all it was more than a church was the Cathedral of Bologna dedicated to Saint Peter.
Grande parte do que vemos actualmente é da sua reconstrução no século XVIII mas desde 1028 que neste local existia uma igreja. Não sobreviveram por isso os frescos pintados por artistas da escola de Ferrara e cujo trabalho inspirava outros como Michelangelo. Começou com um estilo românico, depois gótico até ao barroco dos dias de hoje onde a capela “maggiore” é a sua principal atracção ornamentada com frescos e esculturas. Entre as obras mais notáveis dentro da igreja destacam-se os frescos de Ludovico Carracci e um grupo de esculturas em barro que sobrevivem desde do século XVI, criadas por Alfonso Lombardi representando o Lamento sobre a morte de Cristo.
Much of what we see today is from its reconstruction in the eighteenth century but since 1028 that there was a church in this place. The frescoes painted by artists of the school of Ferrara and whose work inspired others like Michelangelo did not survive. It began with a Romanesque style, then Gothic until the baroque of today where the chapel “maggiore” is its main attraction adorned with frescoes and sculptures. Among the most notable works within the church are the frescoes by Ludovico Carracci and a group of clay sculptures that survive since the sixteenth century, created by Alfonso Lombardi representing the Lament about the death of Christ.
