Uma coisa é certa, os habitantes da cidade de Nîmes souberam ao longo dos muitos anos de história e existência preservar alguns dos seus monumentos mais antigos, a Arena romana é mais um desses exemplos uma vez que é considerado o mais bem conservado do género, batendo até o Coliseu em Roma.

Com uma planta oval e uma capacidade para 24 mil espectadores na época dos romanos, só entrando podemos realmente ver a sua dimensão. Com 133 metros de profundidade, a sua arena foi palco dos espectáculos bárbaros que tanto agradavam aos súbitos do grande império Romano. Mais tarde, no século XIX foi remodelado para dar lugar a um outro tipo de espectáculo, as touradas.

With an oval plant and a capacity for 24 thousand spectators in the time of the Romans, only entering can we really see its size. Tivémos sorte com o dia em que fomos, estavam a ensaiar para o grande espectáculo do “Grand Jeux Romaines”, uma reconstituição histórica dos momentos vividos na arena (sem sacrificar animais) com simulações de combates, desfiles e outras actividades ligadas á época mais dourada da arena.

We were lucky with the day we went, were rehearsing for the grand show of the “Grand Jeux Romaines”, a historical reconstruction of the moments lived in the arena (without sacrificing animals) with simulations of fighting, parades and other activities linked to the golden age of the arena.

No ensaio vimos romanos a competir com um outro povo demonstrando a sua perícia com o cavalo e lanças, vimos também um grupo de estrangeiros vestidos de época que presumo tenham sido convidados a ser extras dos espectáculo mas para estar no público porque treinavam os seus gritos de apoio.

A primeira vez que vimos a Arena foi na noite em que chegámos a Nîmes, é uma construção que se destaca também na ausência da luz do sol e com a praça vazia, chegava a ter um ar assombroso.

Aqui encontrámos a estátua de Nimeño II, um conhecido “matador” francês que nasceu na Alemanha. Estreou-se nesta cidade e ganhou mais peso no mundo da tauromaquia quando enfrentou a seis touros sozinho depois do português Vitor Mendes se ter lesionado logo no primeiro. Anos mais tarde, ferido gravemente na arena vai recuperando o movimento nas pernas e num braço para depois se suicidar.
