A Praça da República tem como principais pontos de interesse, o edificio da Câmara Municipal de Aveiro, a Igreja da Misericordia e a estátua de José Estevão, politico do século XIX que nasceu na cidade. No entanto e se sou 100% honesta o que me fez chegar até aqui foi a Confeitaria do Peixinho e os seus deliciosos Ovos Moles. E já que fomos aproveitei para conhecer melhor esta central praça.

Praça da República has as main points of interest, the building of the City Hall of Aveiro, the Misericordia Church and the statue of José Estevão, nineteenth-century politician who was born in the city. However and if I am 100% honest, what made me get here was Confeitaria do Peixinho and its delicious Moles. And since we went I took advantage to know better this central square.

Confeitaria Peixinho – Aveiro, Portugal

Ovos moles = Confeitaria do Peixinho. Por mais debates sobre o tema aqui encontramos bons ovos moles dos que fazem justiça á produção original do tempo das freiras do Mosteiro de Jesus de Aveiro. Desde 1856 que vendem nesta casa estes doces tão típicos da cidade, em conchas, em berbigão, em peixes ou barcos, a forma é na realidade menos importante que o seu recheio de doce de ovos.

Ovos moles (traditional sweet made of egg yolks and sugar) = Confeitaria do Peixinho (bakery). As many discussions one may have on the subject here we find good Ovos moles of those who do justice to the original production of the time of the nuns of the Monastery of Jesus of Aveiro. Since 1856 they have been selling in this house these sweets so typical of the city, in shells, cockles, fish or boats, the shape is in fact less important than its sweet egg filling.

Passeio de Moliceiro – Aveiro, Portugal

Pode parecer “cliché” de turista mas ir a Aveiro sem comer ovos moles e dar um passeio pela ria no Moliceiro não é na realidade ir. O que não podemos chamar-lhe é a Veneza de Portugal (uma mania de vários países quando têm cidades com canais) porque é estabelecer uma expectativa demasiado alta e fazer com que muitos fiquei á espera de algo que não existe. O passeio de Moliceiro é mais castiço e talvez menos romântico que o de góndola mas essencial para conhecer a história da cidade.

It may seem like a cliché of a tourist but to go to Aveiro without eating soft eggs and going for a walk on the river in Moliceiro is not really going. What we can not call it is the Venice of Portugal (a craze of several countries when they have cities with canals) because it is to establish an expectation too high and to make many waiting for something that does not exist. The tour of Moliceiro is more plausible and perhaps less romantic than the gondola but essential to know the history of the city.

Armazém da Alfândega – Aveiro, Portugal

Preparando a viagem a Aveiro fiz uma lista de sitios para comer dos mais típicos ao mais modernos e o Armazém da Alfândega estava no último grupo. Pensei que pela carta que tinham podia ser arriscado para viajeiros com crianças mas acabou por ser uma boa aposta. Inserido no hotel Histórias por Metro Quadrado e num antigo armazém da alfândega em plena zona do Rossio de Aveiro, o restaurante mantém-se fiel ao produto da região com formatos mais modernos ou internacionais.

Preparing the trip to Aveiro I made a list of places to eat from the most typical to the most modern and the Armazém da Alfândega (Warehouse of Customs) was in the last group. I thought the letter they had might be risky for traveling with kids but it turned out to be a good bet. Inserted in the hotel Stories by Metro Square and in a former customs warehouse in the Rossio area of Aveiro, the restaurant remains faithful to the product of the region with more modern or international formats.
