Dedicada ao Rei D. Fernando III (o Santo) e foi sob a sua protecção que se iniciou a construção da catedral em 1221. Segundo uma placa nela colocada antes de receber este nome era a Plaza del Sarmental pela porta da catedral com o mesmo nome estar virada para a praça e no século XIX, tinha o nome de Plaza del Duque de la Victoria em homenagem ao General Espartero.

A catedral é sem dúvida a grande estrela da praça de onde podemos ver a sua imponente fachada lateral uma vez que a principal está virada para a Plaza de Santa Maria e é justamente á Virgem que se dedicou o monumento. Dizem que a Catedral de Reims serviu de inspiração para sua a construção. Também junto á praça está o outro lado do Arco de Santa Maria que dá acesso ás zonas junto ao Rio Arlanzón.
The cathedral is undoubtedly the great star of the square from where we can see its imposing side facade as the main one faces the Plaza de Santa Maria and it is precisely the Virgin who dedicated the monument. It is said that Reims Cathedral was the inspiration for its construction. Also near the square is the other side of the Santa Maria Arch which gives access to the areas along the Arlanzón River.
