Devo confessar que o nosso principal interesse na cidade de Avignon (ou Avinhão) era sem dúvida o Palácio dos Papas, ainda assim nesta nossa paragem ainda fizémos um bom passeio pelas suas ruas porque sendo pequena não deixa de ser muito interessante.
O seu Palácio é sem dúvida a grande atracção e assim que chegámos á praça onde está localizado não podemos deixar de admirar a sua grandeza na dimensão. É o maior e talvez o mais importante edificio de construção gótica da Europa que serviu de “casa” a alguns papas quando a partir do século XIV, o Papa Clemente V não quis ficar em Roma quando nessa cidade reinava o caos.
I must confess that our main interest in the city of Avignon (or Avignon) was undoubtedly the Palace of the Popes, yet in this our stop we still had a good walk through its streets because however small it is still very interesting.
Its Palace is undoubtedly the great attraction and once we reach the square where it is located we can not fail to admire its grandeur in the dimension. It is the largest and perhaps the most important building of Gothic construction in Europe that served as a “home” to some popes when from the 14th century, Pope Clement V did not want to stay in Rome when chaos reigned in that city.
The visit is quite large and there are more than 20 rooms full of stories of the palace, the popes and other characters that have passed through it. The oldest part was built around this cloister of Benedict XII, it is not very big if we compare it with many others and by its date of construction (century XIV) is little ornamented.
Em alguma salas por conservação não pudémos tirar fotos e outras tantas faziam parte do seu Museu, onde se via maquetes que mostravam a evolução das obras de construção do Palácio, retratos dos Papas que aqui viveram assim como outros items ligados á vida papal, nomeadamente o famoso fato da Guarda Suiça. Na Capela Grande, o lugar de adoração dos Papas estava uma exposição de arte.
Subimos a uma das torres do Palácio e a vista sobre a cidade é excelente, é sem dúvida um dos pontos altos da visita
