Hoje conhecemos…Tomar.
O nosso dia começa no restaurante “A Lúria”, fica em São Pedro de Tomar e é bastante conhecido. Tiro tantas fotografias e foi uma falha grave da minha parte não ter tirado ao interior do restaurante mas sobretudo á comida.
De entradas pedimos um queijo gratinado e um prato de enchidos, desde já recomendo ambos, mas o primeiro é a meu ver obrigatório, estava uma delicia. Depois de pratos principais comemos cabrito e polvo com milhas, ambos muito bons também, já não houve foi muito espaço para sobremesa. O preço é bastante acessível por isso ficámos muito satisfeitos e recomendamos sem dúvida.

Our day starts at the restaurant “A Lúria”, is in São Pedro de Tomar and is well known. I took so many pictures and it was a serious fault on my part not to have taken inside the restaurant but especially the food.
From starters we ordered a cheese gratin and a plate of sausages, from now I recommend both, but the first is in my view obligatory, it was a delight. After main courses we ate kid and octopus with miles, both very good too, since there was not much space for dessert. The price is quite affordable so we were very pleased and would recommend it without a doubt.

De barriga cheia já estávamos preparados para conhecer um pouco melhor Tomar. Já tinha estado antes a visitar com os meus pais, creio que há uns dez anos atrás e há uns cinco para uma despedida de solteira que me ajudou a conhecer ainda melhor a cidade porque tínhamos uma actividade de peddy paper.
O nosso principal objectivo era conhecer o Castelo e o Convento de Cristo, que está classificado pela UNESCO com Património Mundial. Quando chegamos o que vemos primeiro são as muralhas do Castelo medieval construído pela Ordem dos Templários.
With a full belly we were already prepared to know a little more of Tomar. I had visited with my parents before, I believe that about ten years ago and about five to a bachelorette party that helped me to get to know the city even better because we had a peddy paper activity.
Our main objective was to know the Castle and the Convent of Christ, which is classified by UNESCO with World Heritage. When we arrive what we see first are the medieval castle walls built by the Order of the Templars.

Dentro das muralhas do Castelo encontramos o Convento de Cristo, também ele fundado pela Ordem dos Templários e pelo o seu Grão-Mestre, Gualdim Pais. Entrámos para fazer uma visita e se por fora já parece fantástico, por dentro e apesar de estar meio “despido” dá realmente para entender a sua função e imaginá-lo com os monges e os templários da Ordem de Cristo a viverem o seu dia-á-dia. Recomendo a sua visita e realço aqui alguns dos espaços que mais gostei dentro do Convento.
O primeiro foi um dos Claustros, o Grande Claustro mais precisamente. Pareceu-me mais “rico” que os restantes que vi e até de outros monumentos que os têm, dizem que a sua construção tem influência na arquitectura italiana e gostei muito das escadas em caracol. Imagino a quantidade de assuntos importantes que foram discutidos a caminhar por este belo Claustro.
Within the walls of the Castle we find the Convent of Christ, also founded by the Order of the Templars and by its Grand Master, Gualdim Pais. We went in for a visit and if on the outside it looks fantastic, on the inside and despite being half naked, you can really understand its function and imagine it with the monks and templars of the Order of Christ to live their day- To-day. I recommend its visit and highlight here some of the spaces that I liked the most inside the Convent.
The first was one of the Cloisters, the Great Cloister more precisely. It seemed to me more “rich” than the rest I saw and even other monuments that have them, say that its construction has influence in Italian architecture and I really enjoyed the spiral stairs. I can imagine the number of important subjects that have been discussed walking through this beautiful Cloister.

Vimos também a Charola, ficámos algum tempo a contemplá-la. Era aqui que os templários rezavam, aliás é conhecida como o Oratório dos Templários. Neste ponto estamos também no ponto central do Convento, o que sem dúvida marca ainda mais a sua importância.
Creio que foi restaurada há pouco tempo. Fui ver a definição de Charola, diz que é um local para deambular ou andar á volta de um ponto central, faz sentido principalmente quando conhecemos esta. Ao centro estão oito colunas ornamentadas e com santos dispostos em quatro delas, dizem que os templários a construiram com base na Igreja do Santo Sepulcro de Jerusalém. Podemos então deambular á volta do tambor central e verificar que por fora há também alguns frescos e pinturas grande parte de referências biblicas, assim como o brasão de Portugal. Também as suas decorações douradas são um forte indicador da riqueza da Ordem.

Mas se o Convento por dentro encanta, por fora acho igualmente único. Esta fachada que vemos aqui de estilo Manuelino é rica em pormenores que se fosse a definir todos creio que daria umas boas páginas neste post e teria mais um dia de visita sem dúvida. Há muita história só aqui nesta fachada.
But if the Convent inside enchants, from the outside I find it equally unique. This facade that we see here Manueline style is rich in details that if it was all I believe that would give a good page in this post and would have one more day of visit without doubt. Um dos exemplos é esta Janela da Sala do Capítulo. A ornamentação desta janela tem como base a expansão dos portugueses fora do nossa país, ou seja, nos Descobrimentos. Podemos ver os globos nas laterais e no topo está a Cruz que era um símbolo dos Templários. A Sala do Capítulo funcionava no fundo como uma Assembleia, era onde se reunião para a tomada de decisões ou discussão de assuntos religiosos e do reino.
Outro pormenor que eu gostei da fachada foi o cinto, não consigo explicar o seu significado e ainda pesquisei um pouco na web sobre o assunto mas descobri muito pouco, a verdade é que é um pormenor fantástico e que acaba por ser menos protagonista que a Janela.
One of the examples is this Chapter Room Window. The ornamentation of this window is based on the expansion of the Portuguese outside our country, that is, in the Descobrimentos. We can see the globes on the sides and at the top is the Cross that was a symbol of the Templars. The Chapter Hall functioned in the background as an Assembly, it was where they met for decision-making or discussion of religious and kingdom matters.
Another detail that I liked the facade was the belt, I can not explain its meaning and I even researched the web a little on the subject but discovered very little, the truth is that it is a fantastic detail and that ends up being less protagonist than the Window .

Depois vimos a Casa do Capítulo que foi deixada assim, incompleta. Aqui realizaram-se as Cortes de Tomar no século XVI, por esta altura Portugal tinha perdido a sua independência e era governada por Filipe II de Espanha, Filipe I de Portugal. Naquilo que parece ser um segundo piso temos um Arco de um altar.
Then we saw the House of the Chapter that was left incomplete. Here was the Cortes de Tomar in the sixteenth century, by this time Portugal had lost its independence and was ruled by Philip II of Spain, Philip I of Portugal. In what appears to be a second floor we have an arch of an altar.
Descemos depois do Convento e do Castelo para o centro de Tomar. Aqui encontramos a sua principal Praça da República onde temos o edificio da Câmara Municipal de Tomar e a estátua de Gualdim Pais, o fundador de Tomar, um cruzado que lutou ao lado do primeiro Rei de Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques.
We then descend after the Convent and the Castle to the center of Tomar. Here we find its main Praça da República where we have the building of the Town Hall of Tomar and the statue of Gualdim Pais, the founder of Tomar, a crusader who fought alongside the first King of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques.
Na Praça e na zona oposta ao edificio da Câmara Municipal está a Igreja de São João Baptista. A porta segue o estilo manuelino que vimos também no Convento e com referência aos Descobrimentos.
In the Square and in the zone opposite to the building of the City Hall is the Church of Saint John the Baptist. The door follows the Manueline style that we saw also in the Convent and with reference to the Discoveries.
Seguimos depois pela Rua Serpa Pinto, uma das mais agitadas ruas de Tomar primeiro porque é pedestre e depois porque tem bastante comércio. Passamos depois a estrada para os jardins da cidade e ainda assistimos a um jogo de futebol feminino. Vemos o Rio Nabão que banha a cidade e também a Ponte Romana, um dos locais mais emblemáticos da cidade.
Tomar, é uma daquelas cidades a visitar várias vezes.
We continued along Rua Serpa Pinto, one of the busiest streets of Tomar first because it is pedestrian and then because it has a lot of commerce. We then passed the road to the city gardens and still watched a women’s football game. We see the river Nabão that bathes the city and also the Roman Bridge, one of the most emblematic places of the city.
Tomar is one of those cities to visit several times.
