Para os que á primeira não se sentem seduzidos por Valletta recomendó visitar o Palacio do Grão-Mestre porque é mais um testemunho da riqueza histórica da ilha e em particular desta cidade. Pertenceu a um membro da familia de Jean de la Vallette, o fundador da cidade e grão-mestre da Ordem de Malta. Tal como o nome indica, serviu como residência oficial do grão-mestre e hoje é a do Presidente da República o que confirma a sua grande importancia na cidade.
 
For those who do not feel at first seduced by Valletta I recommend visiting the Palace of the Grand Master because it’s a testament to the rich history of the island and this city in particular. Belonged to a family member of Jean de la Vallette, the city’s founder and Grand Master of the Order of Malta. As the name implies, it served as the official residence of the Grand Master and is now the President of the Republic which confirms its great importance in the city.

Podemos visitar uma parte do seu interior assim como a Sala das Armas, o bilhete custa 10€ por pessoa e fui de manhã o que significa que apanhei varias “excursões”. Na altura que visitei não estavam todas as salas disponíveis, por exemplo a Sala do Supremo Conselho estava a ser restaurada e foi muito complicado ver as famosas pinturas que dizem representar o Grande Cerco a Malta.
Ao entrar passamos pelo Corredor das Armas onde para além de várias armaduras expostas estão pinturas que representam vários grão-mestre da Ordem de Malta.
Mais ao fundo as salas Vermelha e Amarela que estão ligadas, a primeira servia para receber representantes de outros países e ainda hoje é utilizada pelo Presidente.
 
We can visit a part of it’s interior as well as the Hall of Arms, the ticket costs 10 € per person and  I went in the morning which means I caught several “tourist tours“. At the time I visited there were not any rooms available, for example the Hall of Supreme Council was being restored and it was very difficult to see the famous paintings that claim to represent the Great Siege of Malta.
When you get in you walk the Hall of Arms where beyond exhibiting several armors there are paintings representing various Grand Master of the Order of Malta.
Further down the Red and Yellow rooms that are connected, the first was used to receive representatives of other countries and is still used today by the President.

Tive que dividir em dois posts o que queria contar sobre a Rua da República até porque ela tem duas caras, a comercial, cheia de gente e esta que mostro aqui, o seu lado B e na minha humilde opinião, o melhor! Até aqui Valletta não me estava a deixar deslumbrada mas e fui descendo esta parte da rua elogiando o colorido das janelas até que chego ao final da rua, olho para trás e vejo que será uma das ruas (senão a rua) mais interessante do centro.
 
I had to split into two posts what I wanted to tell about the Republic Street also because it has two faces, a comercial one full of people and the one I show here,it’s side B and in my humble opinion, the best! Until this place Valletta was not dazzling me and as I went down to this part of the streets praising the colorful windows until we get to the end of it, look back and I see that is problably one of the most (if not the most) interesting Street of the center.

As coloridas varandas são pequenas, feitas de madeira e não encontrei muito sobre a sua origem, alguns defendem que foram os espanhóis que as trouxeram quando dominavam a ilha na época medieval. Outra teoria defende que foram os árabes e que serviam para que as mulheres que não saiam de casa pudessem ver o mundo através da janela. Seja como for, fazem hoje parte da própria identidade da ilha.
Foi ao passear por ela que amaldiçoei o momento em que decidi não trazer a Nikon e utilizar uma máquina que não lhe faz justiça.
 
The colorful balconies are small, made ​​of wood and I have not found much on their origin, some argue that it was the Spaniards who brought them when they ruled the island in medieval times. Another theory is that the Arabs were the ones to do them and  were used for women who do not leave home so they could see the world through the window. Anyway, today it’s part of the identity of the island.

Quando passámos pela rua Arch bishop e vimos este restaurante dissémos logo: temos que vir cá jantar.  Na segunda noite em Valletta fomos com mais dois colegas italianos depois de dar uma volta por toda a oferta de restaurantes no centro histórico da cidade este foi o que eles seleccionaram.
Será difícil definir o conceito do D’Office porque diz que é um bistro mas na sua carta tem muitos pratos italianos e outros cujo ingrediente principal é algo típico de Malta.
 
When we passed by the Arch bishop street and we saw this restaurant soon we said: we have to come over for dinner. On the second night we were in Valletta with two Italian colleagues and after a walk across the offer of restaurants in the historic center of the city this is what they selected.
It’s difficult to define the concept of the D’Office becauseit’s a bistro but in it’s menú has many Italian dishes and others whose main ingredient is something typical of Malta.

É verdade que quando entras dá mais uma ideia de um pequeno bistrot que uma trattoria mas a sua influencia italiana é inegável. Para entrada pedimos uma variedade de brusquetas com tomate e com paté de azeitona. Como prato principal pedi a massa Paccheri (al dente) ecom enchidos da região, a minha volta pediram risotto, calamares e costeleta. Todos ficámos satisfeitos com a comida o que é bom sinal além disso o ambiente do restaurante é muito acolhedor e as empregadas muito simpáticas.
Não conseguimos arranjar espaço para as sobremesas e no final pagámos cerca de 25€ por pessoa (vinho incluído).
 
It is true that when you go in it giver more an idea of a small bistrot tan a trattoria but its Italian influence is undeniable. To start we asked a variety of brusquetas with tomato and olive paté. As main course ordered the mass Paccheri (al dente) ecom cured meats, my back asked risotto, calamares and chop. All were pleased with the food which is a good sign also the ambience of the restaurant is very cozy and the maids very friendly.
We could not make room for the desserts and the end we paid about 20 € per person (wine included).

Não sou totalmente capaz de explicar porque é que este monumento foi dos que mais marcou na nossa curta visita a Valletta. Talvez seja porque está dedicado ás sete mil vítimas do cerco á cidade durante a II Guerra Mundial ou a escultura em bronze de um soldado ou mais ainda a vista que tem para o porto e para o forte St. Angelo. Talvez seja a soma de tudo.
 
I’m not fully able to explain why this monument was the one who impacted me the most on our short visit to Valletta. Maybe because it’s dedicated to e thseven thousand victims of the siege to the city during the Second World War or the bronze sculpture of a soldier or further the view that has of the port and to fort St. Angelo. Maybe it’s the sum of everything.

Na altura da II Guerra Mundial, Malta pertencia a Grã-Bretanha e os combates que se deram nesta zona procuravam bloquear o acesso dos alemães ao Norte de África. Em 1992 foi inaugurado o monumento com a presença da Rainha Isabel II.
Segundo as placas o sino toca ao meio-dia e por essa altura aconselham a não estar muito perto dele.
 
At the momento of World War II, Malta belonged to Great Britain and the fighting that took place in this area sought to block access of German troops to North Africa. In 1992 the monument was inaugurated in the presence of Queen Elizabeth II.
According toth the signs the bell rings at noon and by then  they advise not to be too close to it.

A primeira vez que entrei na Catedral estavam a celebrar uma missa, não podia entrar para visitá-la porque nesses horários não está permitido fazê-lo mas sabia que no dia seguinte seria o primeiro monumento da minha lista. É extraordinária, decorada com um estilo barroco, exagera nos dourados e relembra que estamos onde os cavaleiros da Ordem de Malta passaram.
The first time I entered the Cathedral they were celebrating Mass, I could not go to visit it because at this time you are not allowed to do so but I knew the next day it would be the first monument of my list. It is extraordinary, decorated with a baroque style, it exaggerates in the gold decor and it’s a reminder that we are where the Knights of Malta passed by.

A entrada custa 6€ e tive o azar de coincidir com várias excursões o que complica o tempo que tens para vê-la e porque as capelas são pequenas não pode entrar tanta gente, mas vale sem dúvida a pena visitá-la.
Ia com particular curiosidade de ver os dois quadros de Caravaggio que estão no Oratório. “A Decapitação de S. João Baptista” foi encomendado pelos Cavaleiros da Ordem de Malta ao pintor italiano e das poucas obras que já vi suas esta foi a que mais impressionou, pelo tema e pelo tamanho. Também no oratório está um retrato de S. Jerónimo do mesmo pintor e que podemos ver em réplica numa das capelas.
Inevitávelmente a capela que mais gostei foi a de Portugal (com Castela e Leão), está dedicada ao apóstolo Santiago e onde estão os sepulcros de dois grão-mestre portugueses: António Manoel de Vilhena e Manuel Pinto da Fonseca.
Visitar esta Catedral é conhecer um pouco da essência de Malta e o porquê de ter uma cultura tão diversificada, apesar da sua austera fachada o seu interior é rico em história.
The entrance fee is 6€ and I had the misfortune to coincide with several excursions which complicates the time you get to see it and because the chapels are small they don’t hold many people, but it certainly is worth a visit.
I was going with particular curiosity to see the two paintings by Caravaggio that are at the Oratory. “The Beheading of St. John the Baptist” was commissioned by the Knights of Malta to the Italian painter and of the few works I’ve seen from him this was the most impressive by topic and by size. Also in the oratory there was a portrait of S. Jerome the same painter, and we can see a replica one one of the chapels.
Inevitably the chapel I most enjoyed was that of Portugal (and Castilla y León), it’s dedicated to the Apostle Santiago and it’s where graves of two Portuguese Grand Master António Manoel de Vilhena and Manuel Pinto da Fonseca are located.
To visit this cathedral is to know a bit of the essence of Malta and why it has such a diverse culture, despite its austere facade the interior is rich in history.

Durante a minha estadia em Valletta, foi neste hotel que passei grande parte do meu tempo. Fiquei por quatro noites para uma reunião da empresa onde trabalho, isto significa que não foi uma escolha minha e que acabei por não aproveitar tudo o que tinha para oferecer.
Tinha pontos positivos e negativos, os positivos eram a sua localização porque está a menos de dez minutos a pé do centro da cidade, os quartos são grandes e tem uma vista privilegiada para Ta Xbiex e Manoel Island (Ilha de Manuel dedicada a um grão-mestre português).
During my stay in Valletta, this hotel was where I spent much of my time. I stayed for four nights for a meeting of the company I work for, this means that it was not my choice and I ended up not enjoy all it had to offer.
It had some positive and negative points, the positive were its location because it is less than a ten minute walk from the city center, the rooms were quite big and it had a privileged view of Ta Xbiex and Manoel Island (Island Manuel dedicated to a grain-master Portuguese).

Ainda falando dos positivos, o pequeno-almoço era servido de um grande salão onde podias apreciar as tais vistas de que falei antes além de que em comida era bastante variada. Nele podias provar os famosos “pastizz” (Wikipedia), pastéis de massa folhada recheados com queijo. Além disso e sendo um hotel grande tinha Wi-fi gratuito, no caso do meu quarto eu conseguia aceder mas colegas meus queixaram-se que não conseguiam.
A piscina pouco aproveitámos (e o tempo também não o permitia) e tinha um SPA cujo preço médio das massagens rondava os 85€.
Still speaking of positive, breakfast was served in a large hall where you could enjoy the views of those I mentioned earlier and in addition the food was quite varied. In it you could taste the famous “pastizz” (Wikipedia), phyllo dough pastries filled with cheese. Besides being a great hotel and had Wi-Fi, in the case of my room but I could access my colleagues complained that they could not.
We didn’t take advantage of the pool (and the weather did not allow it) and it had a SPA where the average price of the massage was around € 85.

No lado negativo, fiquei com a sensação de que não era bem um hotel de cinco estrelas, há algo que para mim é um fundamental num hotel de topo que vai mais além do luxo das suas divisões, do tamanho dos quartos, dos serviços de SPA e chama-se atendimento. Foi péssimo.
Primeiro fazem-te pagar em adiantado com cartão de crédito (125€ por noite) e como não chega que pagaste já tudo antes sequer de dormir no hotel ainda te pedem para bloquear 200€ no cartão de crédito como uma caução!?!?? Todo este processo faz com que cada check-in seja um pesadelo e demoras demasiado tempo. Depois ao sair tivémos imensos problemas com um taxi que pedimos ao serviço de transportes do hotel. Marcámos um para duas pessoas e eles cobraram-nos três, quando pedes para que na recepção falem directamente com a parte de transportes dizem que não têm nada que ver com isso que vás tu e ainda com pouca simpatia, ou seja num hotel de cinco estrelas se tens um problema resolves tu. Mesmo depois de reclamar o erro que eles cometeram pagámos dois táxis em vez de um e ainda olham para ti com um ar de que deverias ter pago os três. Se voltar a Valletta aqui não fico de certeza, mas porque a minha experiência foi má não significa que o seja para outras pessoas.
On the negative side, I got the feeling that this was not quite a five-star hotel, there is something that for me is a key to a top hotel that goes beyond the luxury of its rooms, size, SPA services and it’s called customer service. It was awful.
First they make you pay in advance by credit card (€ 125 per night) and because paying everything already before you even slept in the hotel isn’t enough they even ask you to block € 200 on your credit card as a deposit!?!? This whole process makes every check-in a nightmare and delays it for too long. After coming out we had huge problems with a taxi we asked the hotel shuttle service. We booked one to two people and they charged us three, when you ask for it at reception to speak directly with the transport they say they have nothing to do with it is you that should go and with little sympathy, this means that in a five-star hotel you solve your own problems. Even after making a claim about the mistake they did we paid for two taxis instead of one and still they look at you like you should have paid three. If returning to Valletta I will never come here, but because my experience was bad it doesn’t mean it will be for others.

Chegámos a Valletta ao final da tarde de Domingo. Deixámos as coisas no hotel, fomos dar um primeiro passeio pela cidade e começámos a ver que não havia ninguém na rua. Procurávamos também um sitio para comer e percebemos igualmente que não podíamos utilizar a regra de: “Se tem muita gente é porque é bom”, porque estavam todos vazios.
Escolhemos o Margo’s intuitivamente e porque nos apetecia comer pizza, não era nada típicamente maltês mas decidimos experimentar.

We have reached Valletta at the end of the afternoon on a Sunday. We left things at the hotel, we took a first stroll through town and we started to see that there was nobody walking in the streets. We were also looking for a place to eat and also realized that we could not use the rule: “If they have a lot of people there it’s because it is good”, because they were all empty.
We chose Margo’s intuitively and also because we wanted to eat pizza, it was not typically Maltese but decided to try.

Entramos e vemos que é um edificio antigo com as paredes lascadas, com uma decoração simples e com uma frase escrita em grande na parede: Who is Margo? Á volta várias fotos de quem poderá ser a Margo porque afinal pode ser qualquer um de nós.
Dizem que têm as verdadeiras pizzas napolitanas, como nunca fui a Nápoles não saberia comparar. Para começar pedimos uma salada César, vinha com uns saborosos peitos de frango mas como pouco molho o que nos obrigou a temperar com azeite.
Depois cada um pediu a sua pizza, uma Margherita e eu a Del Cavaliere. Tenho que dizer que nunca tinha comido uma pizza assim, levava mozzarela (claro), queijo de cabra, funcho, fiambre e azeitonas. Foi um sabor estranho para uma pizza mas eu gostei do que comi. Eram de tamanho generoso e por isso nem pedimos sobremesa.
No final pagámos uns 30€ os dois.

We go in and we see that it’s in a old building with chipped walls, with simple décor and a sentence written in large wall: Who is Margo? around it several photos of those who may be Margo because it can be any one of us.
They say they have the true Napolitan pizzas, as I’ve never been to Naples I could not compare. To start we ordered a Caesar salad, came with a tasty chicken breasts but had little sauce which forced us to season it with olive oil.
After each asked their pizza, Margherita and I Del Cavaliere. I have to say that I had never eaten a pizza like this, it took mozarella (of course), goat cheese, fennel, ham and olives. It was a strange flavor for a pizza but I liked what I ate. They were generous in size and therefore we did not ordered dessert.
In the end we paid about 30 € the two.
