Graça – Lisboa, Portugal

A Graça (atual freguesia de S. Vicente) é um dos bairros mais emblemáticos de Lisboa e não sei porquê é dos que menos conheço, o ocasional concerto na Voz do Operário ou de passagem para outro bairro e pouco mais.  Até ao dia em que decidimos ir ao Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, aproveitar a vista sobre Lisboa para além do sol que decidiu espreitar depois de uma hora de chuva. Abençoado com uma marcha cantada por Amália, com uma forte ligação á rádio e ao cinema continua um bairro colorido cheio de vida principalmente com a chegada de muitos turistas á cidade nesta semana santa.

Grace (current parish of St. Vincent) is one of the most iconic neighborhoods of Lisbon and do not know why is the  one I less know, the occasional concert at the Voz do Operário or move to another neighborhood and not much else. Until the day that we decided to go to Senhora do Monte belvedere, enjoy the view over Lisbon besides the sun peeking decided after an hour of rain. Blessed with a march sung by Amalia, with a strong connection to the radio and the cinema remains a colorful neighborhood full of life especially with the arrival of many tourists to the city in this holy week.

:: Miradouro da Senhora do Monte

Conseguimos lugar junto ao Miradouro da Senhora do Monte mas o ideal é chegar até aqui de transportes públicos. Tem uma extraordinária vista sobre a cidade donde se pode ver o Castelo de S. Jorge, Ponte 25 de Abril e chegamos até ás Amoreiras passando por vários bairros da cidade. Aqui está também a Capela de Nossa Senhora do Monte onde no seu interior está a cadeira de S. Gens mas não a conseguimos visitar porque estava fechada.

We were able to park next to the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte but the ideal is to get here by public transport. It has an extraordinary view of the city where you can see the Castle of St. George, April 25 Bridge and we get to see Amoreiras through several neighborhoods. Here it is also the Chapel of Our Lady of Mount (Senhora do Monte) where inside is the chair of St. Gens but we did not managed to visit because it was closed.

:: Calçada do Monte

Passando por esta rua encontramos um pequenino miradouro onde podemos continuar a apreciar as vistas da cidade com mais tranquilidade que no anterior.

Going through this street is a small belvedere where we can continue to enjoy the views of the city with more tranquility than the previous.

:: Largo da Graça

Chegamos depois ao famoso e colorido Largo onde se destacam a típica arquitetura de Lisboa com edificios forrados com azulejos como por exemplo o Villa Sousa junto ao Jardim Francisco Gil. Este jardim é um dos espaços mais agradáveis do bairro com uma fonte ao centro e bancos para aproveitar o bom tempo.

We then arrived to the famous and colorful Largo which highlights the typical architecture of Lisbon with buildings lined with tiles such as Villa Sousa near the Garden Francisco Gil. This garden is one of the nicest areas of the district with a central fountain and benches to enjoy the good weather.

:: Miradouro Sophia Mello Breyner Andresen

Chegámos ao Miradouro dedicado á poetisa portuguesa que dizem ter vivido no bairro, encontramos o seu busto a fazer o que tantos outros fazem ao chegar ali, ter  outra vista sobre Lisboa menos desafogada que a da Senhora do Monte mas igualmente interessante e com direito a esplanada para poder tomar um café.

We reached the belvedere dedicated to the Portuguese poet said to have lived in the neighborhood, find her bust doing what so many others do to get there, have another view of Lisbon less panoramic than the Senhora do Monte but equally interesting and entitled to terrace to be able to have a coffee.

:: Igreja e Convento da Graça

Mesmo ao lado do Miradouro está a Igreja e o Convento da Graça construído onde D. Afonso Henriques acampou com as suas tropas para reconquistar a cidade aos mouros. Foi reconstruída após o Terramoto de 1755 adotando ainda o estilo barroco.

Right next to the belvedere is the Church and the Graça Convent built where D. Afonso Henriques encamped with his troops to retake the city from the Moors. It was rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake still adopting the Baroque style.
