Para os que á primeira não se sentem seduzidos por Valletta recomendó visitar o Palacio do Grão-Mestre porque é mais um testemunho da riqueza histórica da ilha e em particular desta cidade. Pertenceu a um membro da familia de Jean de la Vallette, o fundador da cidade e grão-mestre da Ordem de Malta. Tal como o nome indica, serviu como residência oficial do grão-mestre e hoje é a do Presidente da República o que confirma a sua grande importancia na cidade.
 
For those who do not feel at first seduced by Valletta I recommend visiting the Palace of the Grand Master because it’s a testament to the rich history of the island and this city in particular. Belonged to a family member of Jean de la Vallette, the city’s founder and Grand Master of the Order of Malta. As the name implies, it served as the official residence of the Grand Master and is now the President of the Republic which confirms its great importance in the city.

Podemos visitar uma parte do seu interior assim como a Sala das Armas, o bilhete custa 10€ por pessoa e fui de manhã o que significa que apanhei varias “excursões”. Na altura que visitei não estavam todas as salas disponíveis, por exemplo a Sala do Supremo Conselho estava a ser restaurada e foi muito complicado ver as famosas pinturas que dizem representar o Grande Cerco a Malta.
Ao entrar passamos pelo Corredor das Armas onde para além de várias armaduras expostas estão pinturas que representam vários grão-mestre da Ordem de Malta.
Mais ao fundo as salas Vermelha e Amarela que estão ligadas, a primeira servia para receber representantes de outros países e ainda hoje é utilizada pelo Presidente.
 
We can visit a part of it’s interior as well as the Hall of Arms, the ticket costs 10 € per person and  I went in the morning which means I caught several “tourist tours“. At the time I visited there were not any rooms available, for example the Hall of Supreme Council was being restored and it was very difficult to see the famous paintings that claim to represent the Great Siege of Malta.
When you get in you walk the Hall of Arms where beyond exhibiting several armors there are paintings representing various Grand Master of the Order of Malta.
Further down the Red and Yellow rooms that are connected, the first was used to receive representatives of other countries and is still used today by the President.

Tive que dividir em dois posts o que queria contar sobre a Rua da República até porque ela tem duas caras, a comercial, cheia de gente e esta que mostro aqui, o seu lado B e na minha humilde opinião, o melhor! Até aqui Valletta não me estava a deixar deslumbrada mas e fui descendo esta parte da rua elogiando o colorido das janelas até que chego ao final da rua, olho para trás e vejo que será uma das ruas (senão a rua) mais interessante do centro.
 
I had to split into two posts what I wanted to tell about the Republic Street also because it has two faces, a comercial one full of people and the one I show here,it’s side B and in my humble opinion, the best! Until this place Valletta was not dazzling me and as I went down to this part of the streets praising the colorful windows until we get to the end of it, look back and I see that is problably one of the most (if not the most) interesting Street of the center.

As coloridas varandas são pequenas, feitas de madeira e não encontrei muito sobre a sua origem, alguns defendem que foram os espanhóis que as trouxeram quando dominavam a ilha na época medieval. Outra teoria defende que foram os árabes e que serviam para que as mulheres que não saiam de casa pudessem ver o mundo através da janela. Seja como for, fazem hoje parte da própria identidade da ilha.
Foi ao passear por ela que amaldiçoei o momento em que decidi não trazer a Nikon e utilizar uma máquina que não lhe faz justiça.
 
The colorful balconies are small, made ​​of wood and I have not found much on their origin, some argue that it was the Spaniards who brought them when they ruled the island in medieval times. Another theory is that the Arabs were the ones to do them and  were used for women who do not leave home so they could see the world through the window. Anyway, today it’s part of the identity of the island.

Quando passámos pela rua Arch bishop e vimos este restaurante dissémos logo: temos que vir cá jantar.  Na segunda noite em Valletta fomos com mais dois colegas italianos depois de dar uma volta por toda a oferta de restaurantes no centro histórico da cidade este foi o que eles seleccionaram.
Será difícil definir o conceito do D’Office porque diz que é um bistro mas na sua carta tem muitos pratos italianos e outros cujo ingrediente principal é algo típico de Malta.
 
When we passed by the Arch bishop street and we saw this restaurant soon we said: we have to come over for dinner. On the second night we were in Valletta with two Italian colleagues and after a walk across the offer of restaurants in the historic center of the city this is what they selected.
It’s difficult to define the concept of the D’Office becauseit’s a bistro but in it’s menú has many Italian dishes and others whose main ingredient is something typical of Malta.

É verdade que quando entras dá mais uma ideia de um pequeno bistrot que uma trattoria mas a sua influencia italiana é inegável. Para entrada pedimos uma variedade de brusquetas com tomate e com paté de azeitona. Como prato principal pedi a massa Paccheri (al dente) ecom enchidos da região, a minha volta pediram risotto, calamares e costeleta. Todos ficámos satisfeitos com a comida o que é bom sinal além disso o ambiente do restaurante é muito acolhedor e as empregadas muito simpáticas.
Não conseguimos arranjar espaço para as sobremesas e no final pagámos cerca de 25€ por pessoa (vinho incluído).
 
It is true that when you go in it giver more an idea of a small bistrot tan a trattoria but its Italian influence is undeniable. To start we asked a variety of brusquetas with tomato and olive paté. As main course ordered the mass Paccheri (al dente) ecom cured meats, my back asked risotto, calamares and chop. All were pleased with the food which is a good sign also the ambience of the restaurant is very cozy and the maids very friendly.
We could not make room for the desserts and the end we paid about 20 € per person (wine included).

Não sou totalmente capaz de explicar porque é que este monumento foi dos que mais marcou na nossa curta visita a Valletta. Talvez seja porque está dedicado ás sete mil vítimas do cerco á cidade durante a II Guerra Mundial ou a escultura em bronze de um soldado ou mais ainda a vista que tem para o porto e para o forte St. Angelo. Talvez seja a soma de tudo.
 
I’m not fully able to explain why this monument was the one who impacted me the most on our short visit to Valletta. Maybe because it’s dedicated to e thseven thousand victims of the siege to the city during the Second World War or the bronze sculpture of a soldier or further the view that has of the port and to fort St. Angelo. Maybe it’s the sum of everything.

Na altura da II Guerra Mundial, Malta pertencia a Grã-Bretanha e os combates que se deram nesta zona procuravam bloquear o acesso dos alemães ao Norte de África. Em 1992 foi inaugurado o monumento com a presença da Rainha Isabel II.
Segundo as placas o sino toca ao meio-dia e por essa altura aconselham a não estar muito perto dele.
 
At the momento of World War II, Malta belonged to Great Britain and the fighting that took place in this area sought to block access of German troops to North Africa. In 1992 the monument was inaugurated in the presence of Queen Elizabeth II.
According toth the signs the bell rings at noon and by then  they advise not to be too close to it.
