Belfort ou Torre dos sinos é um dos símbolos da cidade e um dos monumentos mais importantes.
Não é dificil localizar a torre com os seus 83 metros de altura, ela é a principal atracção da praça de mercado. Se bem na altura que visitámos estava um pouco ofuscada pelo Mercado de Natal com uma pista de gelo ao centro e várias barraquinhas de comida ou de objectos adequados á temática e época do ano.
Belfort or Bell Tower is one of the symbols of the city and one of the most important monuments.It is not difficult to locate the tower with its 83 meters height, it is the main attraction of the market square. Although at the time we visited it was somewhat overshadowed by the Christmas market with an ice rink in the center and several food stalls or objects appropriate to the theme and time of year.
A sua construção teve inicio no século XIII mas só no século XV ganha mais altura adicionando a torre octagonal onde se pode ver o relógio. A torre está também equipada com um carrilhão com quarenta e sete sinos e um sino triunfal que estão ainda hoje em funcionamento. Antigamente eram utilizados para guiar o dia a dia dos habitantes de Bruges, assinalando as horas, momentos específicos do dia ou até funcionando como alarme em caso de um incêndio.
Its construction began in the thirteenth century but only in the fifteenth century earns more height adding the octagonal tower where you can see the clock. The tower is also equipped with a chime with fourty seven bells and a triumphal bell that are still in operation. Formerly used to guide the daily life of the inhabitants of Bruges, marking the hours, at specific times of the day or even functioning as alarm in case of fire.
Depois de ter subido o grande número de degraus para chegar ás torres da Sagrada Familia em Barcelona tinha dito que não repetiria a experiência porque o problema nem foi o subir foi o descer numa apertada escada de caracol que me deixou com uma lesão no joelho. Mas estar em Bruges e não subir até á sua Torre parecia um desperdicio da viagem, assim que estabelecemos um limite que se eu não conseguisse aguentar não subiria até ao topo, fazendo o total os 366 degraus.
After having climbed agreat number of steps to get to the towers of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona I had said I would not repeat the experience because the problem was not the climb it was coming down a narrow spiral staircase that left me with a knee injury. But being in Bruges and not go up to it’s tower seemed a waste of our trip, so we set a limit that if I could not bear I wouldn’t ascend to the top, making the total 366 steps.

Depois de subir uns trinta degraus chegámos até á Sala do Tesouro, onde para além de uma arca do tesouro encontrámos dois retratos pintados por Matthias de Visch, um deles o de George Dumery o homem a quem pediram para instalar os sinos do carrilhão. Diz-se também que na Torre se guardavam os direitos e os privilégios da cidade.
After climbing thirty steps we arrived to the Treasure Room, where in addition to a treasure chest we found two portraits painted by Matthias Visch, one of George Dumery the man asked to install the bells chime. It is also said that in the tower the rights and privileges of the city where stored.
Os patamares seguintes levaram-nos até á sala do sino triunfal e mais acima do carrilhão, entre elas estava outra que mostrava o mecanismo do relógio.
The subsequent steps took us up to the room of the triumphant bell and above the carillon, among them was one that showed the watch mechanism.
Ao final dos 366 degraus encontramos a vista panorâmica da cidade mas a extremidade das medidas de segurança não deixam ver assim tão bem, na realidade as fotos que consegui tirar foi colocando a máquina através da rede porque esta não foi a vista completa que tivémos, uma pena é verdade mas entendemos o seu porquê.
At the end of 366 steps we found the panoramic views of the city but with the extreme security measures leave we couldn’t see so well, in fact I could only take photos putting the machine through the net because this was not the view that we had completed a shame but we understand your why.
