Monastiraki recebe o seu nome pelo Mosteiro que em tempos esteve neste mesmo local do qual apenas sobreviveu uma igreja, agora é uma agitada praça onde a religião ortodoxa convive com a muçulmana. Além disso tem um flea market que se divide em dois espaços um onde se vende desde calçado, roupa, souvenirs, tabuleiros de xadrez e peças de artesanato local, outra onde podemos comprar objetos em segunda mão ou antiquidades.

Monastiraki gets its name from the monastery that was once in this same place and from which just survived a church, now is a bustling square where the Orthodox religion coexists with the Muslim. Also it has a flea market which is divided into two spaces one where it sells from shoes, clothing, souvenirs, chessboards and local handicrafts, another where we can buy things in second hand or antiquities.

A pequena igreja de Pantanassa foi construída no século XVII no lugar onde estaria uma outra do século X, respeita o estilo ortodoxo e o seu interior ainda que de dimensão reduzida vale a pena uma visita pelos detalhes elaborados da sua decoração. A Mezquita de Tzistarakis que está junto á biblioteca de Adriano foi construída no século XVIII, é hoje utilizada como Museu da Arte Popular da Grécia. É também um dos pontos de acesso para chegar á Acrópole.

The small Pantanassa church was built in the seventeenth century in the place where an another from the tenth century used to stand, it respects the orthodox style and its interior although of a small size is worth a visit by the elaborate detail of its decoration. The Mezquita Tzistarakis which is next to Hadrian’s library was built in the eighteenth century, is now used as a Museum of Folk Art of Greece. It is also one of the access points to reach the Acrópolis.
